Welcome to the 4th annual San Joaquin International Film Festival (SJIFF4).Film remains a universal medium for sharing the human experience. Itstretches across borders, cultures and languages to touch, challenge andremind us of our commonalities and differences in the celebration of ourhumanity.

Some of the finest and most noteworthy films from around the world arepart of this year’s festival. The Stockton-based San Joaquin Film Society hasassembled a collection of award-winning hits, international blockbusters andlocal works for this year’s festival that opens at Stockton’s Empire Theatre andcloses at Modesto’s State Theatre.

“Our selections for this year’s festival run the gamut from Bhutto, a rivetingdocumentary about Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s powerful woman leader whowas assassinated in 2007, to the adult tragicomedy Vincent Wants to Sea,” saysfestival Vice Chair and Head of Programming Shane Williamson, who adds,“Our goal is to present the best in ‘world cinema’ and the program we’veassembled accomplishes that in a very powerful way.”

Located in Stockton, California, the San JoaquinFilm Society, Inc. (SJFS) carries on the tradition ofpresenting the annual San Joaquin InternationalFilm Festival (SJIFF). The Film Society celebratescinema arts, multi-cultural appreciation, and com-munity outreach through educational programs.

Founded in 2008 by Sophoan Sorn, in its first year,SJIFF presented the work of filmmakers represent-ing 14 nations from around the world. In 2009, theFilm Society held its 2nd San Joaquin InternationalFilm Festival and added the World Cinema Series.Within the ambitious series were the San JoaquinChildren's Film Festival, Cinema Italia, JewishCinema Day, French Cinema Day, Latino CinemaDay and CalDocFest. In 2010, the organizationexpanded the 3rd San Joaquin International FilmFestival to the State Theatre in Modesto, a city 45miles south of Stockton. Each year, the Film Societypresents an exceptional roster of films representingdiverse world views and cultures in a unique pro-gram that encompasses both Stockton, its home,and now Modesto, with future plans to expand theannual festival to other communities.
