Stop Work AuthorityMarathon Galveston Bay

In November,Cajun Deep Foundations’ M a r a t h o n Galveston Bay Refinery crew was perform-ing standard ACIP pile insta l lat ion duties . While drilling in themiddle of two piles installed without issue the previous day, the crew noticed an oily, black substanceprotruding from the ground and stopped the drill immediately, shut down allequipment, and stopped work while the substance was investigated . The super-intendent immediately notified the clientand cleared the area .

Once cleared, the Marathon operators, along with the fire department, entered the area to test the substance . The air monitor revealed very high amounts of benzene (over 50 parts per million) . At Cajun’s request, Marathon sent a sample to be tested to identify the exact nature of the substance . They were also asked to provide an SDS before the crew resumed drilling operations . The test results revealed that the substance was an oil based product containing hydrocarbons .

Cajun met with Marathon engineers to discuss a solution . After determining it was unsafe to continue drilling due to the high lower explosive levels (a potential ignition source with the auger assembly), Cajun

proposed the installation of helical piles . Because the installation process includes minimal ground disturbance or metal-on-metal contact, this proved to be the safest way to install the foundation .

Stop Work Authority is a topic that is discussed daily in pre-task meetings . It’s not only your right to stop work for an unsafe act or condition, but your obligation . Cajun not only honors Stop Work, they encourage it . Cajun has done a great job with making its employees feel as if no project or schedule is more important than properly used Stop Work Authority . As in this situation, an alternate solution that both provided the client a timely foundation option AND kept our employees safe in the process . Safety is paramount on every project and Stop Work Authority is the key to our success . Even if you are unsure, if you see something, say something!

Scholarship Update – John SaxonCongratulations to John Saxon, the 2012 David Abrusley Scholarship recipient, on landing his dream job as a finance analyst with Goldman Sachs in New York!

John initially set out to earn a Kinesiology degree in Exercise Science with a minor in Business at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette . As a former high school athlete, he wanted to work with aspiring professional athletes to help them achieve their goals through hard work and determination . As college students often times do, John’s interests changed which led him to change his major to Finance .

John’s grandfather gave him some AT&T stock as a Christmas gift one year . John started looking into what stocks were and how the markets worked, which led to his interest to read the Wall Street Journal, watch CNBC and read different finance related books by the likes of Warren Buffett and other respected individuals in that field . While math was one of his more difficult subjects growing up, he realized that he didn’t work as hard on it as he could have . John’s passion and interest in finance drove him to put forth more effort in college which led to his math grades improving . John graduated magna cum laude from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in December, 2016 .

How did John land his dream job? He applied to over 500 jobs all over the United States . He used different websites like LinkedIn, Indeed and CareerBuilder . He also did a lot of networking by researching companies he was interested in on LinkedIn that would show the top 25 people in the company . He would email those individuals realizing there was only a 50/50 chance he would get a call or an email . By doing this, he obtained an internship with Farr, Miller & Washington in Washington, D .C . He did this by contacting the founder, Michael Farr by email after seeing Mr . Farr speaking on CNBC . John never asked anyone for a job, but rather asked for advice . Often times they would give him other contacts . John always followed up with any contact by sending a handwritten letter thanking them .

Despite receiving over one hundred rejection letters and countless times being told it was next to impossible for him to secure a job with one of the larger finance companies, John kept reaching out and making contacts .

In December, 2016, John found himself looking out the window of the 25th floor at the Goldman Sachs office in Jersey City overlooking the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge . Wow, what a view! He looked over to see his competition that were all from high ranking schools such as Harvard and Georgetown while

UL Lafayette was ranked in the 800s! Out of thousands of applicants, John was able to impress multiple interview panels during their rigorous interview process and was offered one of the few coveted positions with Goldman Sachs .

When asked what he thought helped him get to this point and secure the job of his dreams, John said, “Not to sound cliché but it was mostly the willingness to work hard and not give up . There were so many times when I felt overwhelmed and defeated but one thing my parents always drilled into me was to work hard and never give up . I could not have gone through this entire process without the support of my fiancée and my family .” John further stated, “So many people along the way told me not to waste my time . I was told that I was not from a top school so attaining my dream job would be impossible . I am happy to say I had the support and advice from mentors that helped fuel my desire to prove them wrong . I knew by receiving numerous rejections that I only needed one ‘yes’ to make it happen .”

John’s story is a good reminder to all that hard work and dedication pay off! Also, having the support and encouragement of friends, family and mentors is crucial to success . Again, congratulations to John on a job well done and we thank you for carrying on David’s noble spirit!

ACI 306 Cold Weather ConcreteIt’s that time of year again; Jack Frost is rearing his ugly head . Even in the cold, work must go on . Forms have to be built, rebar tied, and concrete placed . This is where ACI 306 comes into play . ACI 306 is the cold weather concrete placement and curing specification . Its a good idea to have concrete blankets, portable heaters, thermometers, and insulated cylinder boxes ready before the cold arrives . According to ACI 306, cold weather is defined as a period when, for more than 3 consecutive days: l) the average daily air temperarure is less than 40°F(5°C) and; 2) the air temperature is not greater than 50°F (10°C) for more than one-half of any 24-hr period . The average daily air temperature is the average of the highest and the lowest temperatures occurring during the period from midnight to midnight . Cold weather, as defined in this report, usually starts during fall and continues until spring .

A few other things to keep in mind while preparing for a concrete pour is that the temperature of freshly mixed concrete can play a big role in placement and curing . Keeping paving and foundations above freezing for a minimum of 24 hours is crucial . Be cautious of any admixtures for cold weather concrete . Under certain conditions, calcium chloride should not be used to accelerate setting and hardening because of the increased chances of corrosion of metals embedded in concrete or other adverse effects .

Be sure to check your individual job specifications as they may vary from ACI 306 . Also, check with engineering and your concrete supplier to see how cold weather will affect your mix design . Following a few simple procedures will help produce a quality product for the client, and prove that Cajun Industries, LLC is a leader in industrial construction .

Sasol LCCP Silver Coin AwardFluor Technip Integrated (FTI) developed its own Safety Recognition Program for Sasol LCCP, which includes recognizing a “Crew of the Week” and providing them with a free lunch . On certain special occasions FTI also recognizes a worker from the 5,000+ worker site for above and beyond safety achievements . Cajun Deep Foundations’ own Derek Knight was the recipient of the “Sasol LCCP Silver Coin Award” for responding to a distressed employee while installing ACIP Piles at Unit 86 .

On June 20, 2016, while his crew was installing ACIP piles, Derek noticed the pile leads on the rig were “slack”, or not in a normal, safe working position . Derek approached the rig’s operator, and found him slumped over and incoherent .

He immediately notified the superintendent and safety technician of his finding . After obtaining a response from Sasol EMTs, Derek and several Cajun employees worked together to safely remove the crane operator from the rig and get him to a safe location . There he awaited treatment from Sasol EMTs .

Concurrent with the removal of the operator from the crane, the remaining workers on the crew were able to quickly and safely secure the rig and leads .

As noted by Sasol’s Safety Technician Darla Randolph, “This crew knows the equipment . The workers recognized a problem and responded without further incident . This situation could have gone horribly wrong if Derek and crew did not recognize and respond .”

FTI’s Area Construction Director Steve Roth also noted, “Derek’s quick actions and situational awareness prevented a very hazardous situation from developing . Being his brothers’ keeper and helping seek immediate medical assistance showed his true commitment . His actions exemplify the LCCP Mega Project HSE culture, and the Sasol Silver Coin Award is a small recognition of his great actions . Congratulations!”

Thank you, Derek, for your quick actions, and congratulations on your well-deserved award .

North Baton Rouge Industrial Training Initiative

Cajun Industries, LLC, in partnership with ExxonMobil, has identified an opportunity to help meet an industry demand for a technically trained workforce and help our neighbors secure training and employment .

Launched in August 2012, the North Baton Rouge Industrial Training Initiative is a collaborative effort between Baton Rouge Community College, ExxonMobil, other industrial leaders, nonprofit organizations and community resource partners . The initiative utilizes academic testing, drug testing, assessments, evaluations, and interviews to selected participants and provides free training in one of three concentrations — pipefitting, welding or electrical . For the third class, BRCC accepted and enrolled 60 of the

224 individuals that applied for the course . The course runs from December 5, 2016 to December 1, 2017 and produces graduates with two levels of training in a selected discipline .

In addition to technical training, students learn skills that will help them secure and keep a job once they graduate . HOPE Ministries and representatives from stakeholder companies, including an ExxonMobil retiree volunteer group, are helping program participants understand industry expectations, create resumes, and prepare for job interviews .

The Great Flood of 2016 We were all somehow impacted by the flooding in August of 2016 . There were many Cajun families whose homes were flooded during this terrible disaster . If a family did not flood, chances are they knew someone who did . This includes co-workers, relatives and clients .

Cajun remained resilient as a company while helping our Cajun families at the same time . In the aftermath of the flooding, countless employees rolled up their sleeves and dedicated themselves to helping coworkers and their communities . Thank you to all of the employees who assisted with preparing, serving and delivering over 2,000 meals, providing ice chests with bottled water, gutting houses, hanging sheetrock and sometimes just listening . This event proved, once again, that we are ALL family .

Training Future ConstructorsThe LSU Construction Management Program has the great task of developing new prospects for the construction industry . As an industry leader creating sustainable value for our clients and for the benefit of the community, we are always looking for ways to be involved with this program . Cajun Deep Foundations in conjunction with LSU CM Program and the Construction Industry Advisory Council (CIAC) provide numerous resources and assistance with financial support, guest lectures, mentorships and project field trips . Cajun’s own Daniel Sprunk (LSU CM 2014) arranged for students currently enrolled in the LSU CM Program to visit our Shintech Project . When Daniel was contacted by CIAC about select students visiting our jobsite, he immediately started contacting the correct people to make this happen . Keep in mind getting visitor passes to visit a jobsite is a huge undertaking . . .getting visitor passes to visit Shintech is nearly impossible . Cajun was successful in obtaining the proper approval to host 10 LSU CM students for a project site tour .

Cajun was able to get two CB&I Construction Managers to provide a project introduction and describe what the unit will produce and how the product is moved to other plant units . Such a presentation normally isn’t provided to others outside of the construction teams .

After the introduction, Cajun provided a site tour to several work areas, and finished with a short question and answer session at the site trailer . Daniel made sure all the LSU students saw equipment, workers in action and

allowed the students to ask crewmembers questions about the pile driving process . The LSU students and CIAC sponsors were very appreciative of this opportunity . Thanks Daniel for grooming potential employees, clients or contract managers we may work with in the future!

Cajun Reaches OSHA Milestone

December 19, 2016 marked five years without an OSHA recordable for Cajun Deep Foundations’ . The path to achieving this success began with their Crossroads Safety Program on October 14, 2011, when all supervisors signed a personal pledge .

This pledge was the beginning of a culture change – it positively affected the way emplyees estimate, plan and execute their work, both on the jobsite and at home . The achievement is a testament to Cajun Deep Foundations’ dedicated field employees who have accepted mentorships, corrected and documented hazards, reported near misses, and stopped work countless times over the past 5 years . We are proud of the achievement and progress that Cajun Deep Foundations has made with its Crossroads Safety Program and look forward to continued success and improvement . Congratulations!

NCCER AssessmentsOne of the largest components of productivity, quality, and safety during a construction project is having a staff of highly trained, knowledgeable workers . Poorly trained workers bog down a project’s progress, deliver questionable or subpar output, and ultimately put themselves, their coworkers, and the worksite in danger . One of the best tools in the industrial markets for determining whether or not a worker is qualified and trained is to check his or her NCCER credentials .

The National Craft Assessment & Certifi-cation Program (NCACP) evalu-ates journey-lev-el knowledge and skills of ex-perienced craft p r o f e s s i o n a l s and provides a training prescrip-tion to upgrade training . Not only does the NCACP provide contractors with an effective tool to evaluate the skills and pro-ductivity of their workforce, it allows owners to achieve higher quality construction with increased cost-effectiveness .

Certifications of an individual’s qualifications are tracked through NCCER’s National Registry . Credentials include “Certified”, “Performance Verified”, and “Certified Plus” . These industry credentials give employers confidence in the craft professional’s skill, knowledge, and desire for continuous improvement .

NCCER assessments and certification are based on its curriculum . The assessments are available for journey-level craftsmen . The written assessment tests the individual’s knowledge of the specific craft area and offers a recommendation for upgraded training .

NCCER’s assessment and certification program also incorporates Performance Verifications tests . These tests assess a craftsman’s skill level on a given area by having him or her demonstrate that skill in a controlled environment where it can be carefully observed and measured .

NCCER awards certification based on completion of these two categories of assessment for each craft area . If the in-dividual successfully completes the writ-ten assessment then he or she receives the “Knowledge Verified” certification .

If the individu-al successfully completes the per formance section of the a s s e s s m e n t then a “Perfor-mance Veri-fied” certificate is awarded . If the craftsman s u c c e s s f u l l y completes both the written and per formance a s s e s s m e n t s then NCCER awards the

“Certified Plus” certification .

Craft Assessments can be scheduled at ABC New Orleans/Bayou, ABC Pelican, ABC Pelican SW, ABC SETX, CMEF Houston, ABC TX Gulf Coast .

To find out more about NCCER Craft Assessments contact Chris Newton, Cajun Workforce Development Manager at chris .newton@cajunusa .com .

Management C rnerAfter a contentious elec-tion, we have a President who aligns himself with a free and open mar-ketplace, fewer regu-lations, replacement of Obamacare, following the rule of law on immigration, investments in infrastruc-ture, reduction in taxes and an overall focus of making government more responsive to its citizen’s

needs . President Trump will need assistance with these lofty goals and I’m hopeful he will get the cooperation of our elected officials . Rest assured the news media and liberal demo-crats will try to delegitimize his pres-idency and fight him along the way . If any of his proposals are important to you, one successful means of po-litical action is to contact your elect-ed official . Elected officials are often swayed by the voice of the common man…especially when those voices come in numbers .

Devastating floods affected many Cajun employees, their families and friends . Local law enforcement suffered tragic injuries and the loss of three brave police officers . This devastation and unrest brought 2016 to a difficult end and made 2017 a year in which we look forward . From adversity comes strength . Our community will become stronger as a result of these challenges .

One of Cajun’s primary safe work practices is “STOP WORK AUTHORITY” . Any time an unsafe condition or action is observed, an employee has the authority and responsibility to stop work . At Cajun, employees are commended and often rewarded when an unsafe

behavior/condition is stopped . In this issue, you can read numerous examples of employees stopping work to prevent incidents . Regardless of how long you’ve been employed at Cajun, stopping work due to unsafe conditions is expected of each of you . We are thankful to everyone who exercised the right to stop work and helped to keep our workplaces safe .

Gratitude goes out to our hazard recognition award winners . Chis Thompson, Ronald Rome and Thomas Volion are to be commended for recognizing hazards before they became an incident and all others who do this on a daily basis . Congratulations also goes out Cajun IDC for being awarded the “Ken Jacob President’s Award” for the Shintech HAPF-3 project . Cajun Deep

Foundations’ SASOL Project continues to receive recognition by Derek Knight winning the coveted Silver Coin Award . The award was presented to our team by Fluor Technip Integrated . Each of these award winners helps define Cajun as the safest and most quality constructor in the industry .

I’d also like to thank those who continue their service outside of Cajun by offering their leadership to Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc . to ensure our industry strengthens its merit shop philosophy .

As we enter 2017, we wish each of you and your families a rewarding, successful and safe new year and we continue to appreciate you choosing Cajun as your employer of choice .

Looking Forward to 2017

The Cajun Connection | 4th Quarter 2016 | 15
