Welcome to 4th Grade! We are excited about next year even though some of the details are unclear due to Covid. This summer we have two reading tasks and a
STEM task. Due the first Wednesday after school begins and will be scored as a classwork grade.
Required Reading Task #1
All incoming 4th graders should read Escape to the Everglades and complete
ONE of the projects. Books are available online or at the school for pick up (please
call ahead).
Escape to the Everglades Project Choices : PICK 1
● Construct a model/diorama of a scene from the book. Include a detailed explanation of the scene you made (10 sentences). We encourage you to use recycle materials as much as possible. Be creative!
● Write a song or poem about your book. You must include at least events from the book. Be prepared to perform it for your class.
● Create a poster that contains information about the plot, setting, and characters. Be sure to include 5 illustrations.
● Design a tablet with at least nine “apps” that the characters in your book would find useful. You can use apps that already exist or create new ones. Include an explanation for each app that explains what the app does and how it relates to the story.
Required Reading Task #2Read a minimum of two other books (suggested list on on the following page)
with a goal of reading ~100 min. a week. After they complete a book they fill out
an index card. On the front they should include the book title, author, and picture,
and on the back a 3-5 sentence summary and whether they recommend the
book.

The following should be completed on a minimum of ½ of sheet of paper. See last page for examples. Due the first Wednesday after school begins to be scored as a classwork grade.
Entry 1 “I Notice, I Wonder, This Reminds Me of”
Spend a few minutes outside. Look for something that catches your attention. Then go through the following procedure :
1. Take 1-2 min studying this object up close & write down what you notice2. Draw/Sketch/Trace your object3. Write down any other things you noticed while drawing and any wonderings
(questions) that come to mind when sketching.4. What connections can you make with this object ( remind you of) ?
Entry 2 “Animal/Insect Impact”
Spend a few minutes outside. Look for a small area that catches your attention(ex. base of tree in yard, garden in front of apartment/house), then:
1. Draw a map of what you see around this small area, use symbols to represent things, and landmarks.
2. Record what living things you see in the area, look closely at the grass, leaves etc. 3. Respond to this prompt: How do animals/insect impact this space?
Entry 3 “Sound Mapping”
Spend a few minutes outside. 1. Listen closely to what you hear. 2. Think about where is the sound coming from and what is making the sound. 3. Record on the paper where the sound is coming from and sketch what made the
sound. 4. Record any other thoughts or notes or drawings that catch your attention
