Article By: Lexie Nakamori WINDRIXVILLE, Oklahoma Three “superheroes” saved the lives of five schoolchildren from a burning church. Last Sunday, several students, teachers, and bystanders took watch as three “Greasers” (as they call themselves) Johnny Cade, Ponyboy Curtis, and Dallas Winston took action of rescuing five kids, said to be eight years old or younger, from an old, abandoned, burning church on the top of Jay Mountain. Sources say that the church burned down merely just because it was old. Burning church on top Jay Mountain. Top tumblr posts. Digital image. Satansbarbiexoxo, n.d. Web. 16 Sept. 2014 Curtis and Cade were the first one’s to enter the smouldering church. They broke two windows to get in and out of the church. As Curtis and Cade went in, they picked up the children one by one heaving them out of the church. About 15 minutes after, the church began crumbling slowly. A scared Winston shouted inside to warn his friends that the building was about to collapse. Once Curtis heard Winston’s call, he immediately grabbed the last kid he found in sight and rushed out of there. As for Cade, he stated himself that he couldn’t get out fast enough before he heard a crack, and the sound of timber slowly belted out. Cade was right in the way of where the kindled timber fell and unfortunately, it hit him on his back. After Curtis got out of the church, his jacket was on fire, but didn’t seem to notice. Winston came to Curtis’ side knowing the jacket was on fire. Winston tried to help Curtis by whacking off the smoke and flames, but Curtis merely collapsed on the floor from being whacked too hard. We found later that day, that the jacket that was on fire saved his young life. Agee, Larry. Sandy's Memphis, Tennessee. Digital image. N.p., 22 Oct. 1962.
