Based on the sporty and successful Golf SportWagen, the new Golf Alltrack offers a “ruggedized” look and more capability to explore off-road. More than a half-inch of additional ground clearance, sophisticated 4Motion® all-wheel-drive system and exclusive premium features give the Golf Alltrack a clear advantage over ordinary wagons and compact SUVs.

The Golf Alltrack 4Motion® all-wheel-drive system uses the latest generation BorgWarner (Generation V) coupling, activated via an electro-hydraulic oil pump. In normal driving, the Alltrack acts like a front-wheel-drive car for better fuel economy, but as soon as the system detects wheel slip, the drive torque can shift to the rear wheels. The BorgWarner coupling acts longitudinally, while Electronic Differential Locks (EDL) at the front and rear axles act laterally in concert with the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. The system briefly brakes a wheel that is slipping, enabling uninterrupted and stable transfer of drive power to the wheel on the opposite side.

A Drive Mode selector includes “Off-Road Mode,” which adds Hill Descent Control (brakes the Golf Alltrack automatically) and optimizes traction control for off-road terrain. Available Off-Road HMI displays compass, steering angle, and altitude when driving off-road.

Golf Alltrack features all the advantages of the versatile and dependable Golf SportWagen, plus the all-terrain capability that comes from 4Motion®. It’s a rugged wagon perfect for outdoor adventures. Premium accents and features give it a more upscale feel.

Although the Outback offers two engine choices, thecarconnection.com says, “We’d like the flat-4 to be a little more potent and the flat-6 to be a little less thirsty.” Interior quality is not impressive. Editors write, “The wagon’s budget roots are clear.”

Based on the Subaru Impreza sedan, the compact Crosstrek is criticized for its “underwhelming” power and “droning” CVT, according to Edmunds.com. A hybrid powertrain is offered, but reviewers say the small fuel economy advantage is not worth the extra weight and cost.
