12:51pm+3 hours: Upper Hutt Community Rescue is put on standby for Christchurch.

+ 11 hours: By midnight NZRT9 had their three rescue vehicles plus trailers all packed.

+ 19 hours: By 8am Wednesday, the 13-strong community-funded team was crossing the strait with leader Geoff Fouhy, having linked up with the council-backed Hutt City Emergency Response Team

New Zealand Rescue Team 9 is the

national designation of Upper Hutt Community Rescue, a national resource in time of trouble.

“It’s been a tough deployment,” says operations manager Dave Butcher, the urban search and rescue veteran who decided this time he could do more logistically for the team from the home base, ensuring they had the supplies and equipment to do their job.

“It’s been tough, it’s been tiring,” team leader Geoff Fouhy said on the last day of the six-day deployment.

“Our main role has been working street by street clearing houses, making certain no persons have been left behind, alive or otherwise,” he said. They have also been supporting the engineers assessing the damage, making certain they can do so in safety.

“It’s all been part and parcel of supporting the residents.”

He said the team had “gone at it with gusto”, had worked long hours and held up well, but they were “very tired” nearing the end of six days of climbing

through rubble through damaged properties.

“It’s the benefit of the hours of training we’ve done, to know how to be safe, what to look for and where to look.”

The 13-strong Upper Hutt team flew back on Tuesday morning, heading for a major debrief and formal trauma counselling. They crossed with Butcher and two others who were on the 6ajmn flight to drive the rescue vehicles back to Picton for the 2pm sailing.

“That’s a safety issue,” he said, “we wouldn’t want any accidents on that long drive for tired guys.” “The trauma counselling is part of what we do, the whole package,” says Dave Butcher. “It affects people in different ways. But the last thing we want to do is for one of the team to hold on to stuff inside them that they should be letting go.”

As volunteers, the Upper Hutt team has their day jobs to return to, but it will be with the memories of working alongside all the national and international USAR teams. With each day finishing with a major de-brief, then it was generally bed, and the chance to recharge before it started all over again in the morning.

Dave Butcher is “so proud of my boys and girls.”

When they started over 15 years ago, quietly doing their stuff, they were poo-pooed, the “this will never happen sort of thing.

“But we’ve fronted up.”

They couldn’t have done it with the wonderful support of people like Tom Jones and the Rimutaka Licensing Trust, who have ensured the team has the right quality gear, with an on-going commitment. And guys like Dave Rangi, of Tait Mobile up on Emerald Hill who makes sure the team has the best of comms gear.

“Outstanding,” says Mayor Wayne Guppy, of NZRT9.

“They’re up there with the best in the world.”

The issue of Council funding of the rescue group has never really been discussed, Mr Guppy said.

“These are exceptional circumstances, and as we review our overall response, this could be one of the things we look at.”

Upper Hutt Community Rescue led our community’s response to The Christchurch Earthquake. Other groups are now doing their thing.

Why I love Upper HuttDavid DellPadre to the Police College, Archivist/Historian with the Sheet Music Archive of NZ, Director of the Take Note Singers and Leader of the Around The Piano showsThough born in Wellington, David saw the light early when he moved to Upper Hutt at two months of age (with his parents, Ray and Dorothy)! The family home in Hildreth St was shared with sisters Anne and Carol. From an early age David had a passion for music, starting piano lessons at six, joining the Upper Hutt Boys’ Choir at seven and writing his first song when eight. He attended Fraser Crescent School, Maidstone Intermediate and Upper Hutt College, where music was always David’s favourite subject (along with eating lunch). After passing his UE, David worked for Radio NZ as a sound engineer for five years, before heading to Otago University for six years studying music, drama and theology. David worked as a Presbyterian Minister in Hawke’s Bay for five years (where Ellen and Michaela

were born), then as the Pastor of Rimutaka Baptist Church for eight years (where Nathan and Ceri were born). Along with his current work as Padre at the Police College, David is also the archivist/historian with the Sheet Music Archive of NZ, runs three Take Note Singers groups and the popular monthly Around The Piano shows (there’s one on this Sunday at 2pm). He is married to Sarah and they have a blended family of seven children, including William, Oliver and Annabel.

Why I love Upper Hutt David says: When I was a teenager, I was keen to get away from Upper Hutt and see the world – well, at least Dunedin and Hawkes Bay! But, after my girls were born, the call of home was strong – and I began to see Upper Hutt in a different light, as a place that’s so family friendly, full of great places to explore the outdoors and surrounded by majestic green hills and mountains. I love the growing sense of identity, where we are emerging from being a dormitory suburb of Wellington into a place where we proudly see ourselves as unique and vibrant,

with a way of life second to none. As a Christian, I believe God has blessed us with one of the best places in the world to live; I’m very proud to be from Upper Hutt!

Favourite Place to ShopDavid says: Being a bloke, it would have to be Mitre 10 Mega. It has everything to keep a bloke happy for hours (well, almost everything). You might think I’m strange, but I love the smell of new stationery items – so Warehouse Stationery in Queen St is also on my favourites list!

Favourite Place to EatDavid says: That’s easy! It would have to be the Fig Tree Café on Fergusson Drive – the delicious food, the relaxing setting and the great staff make it my favourite place to eat. Of course, if you’re in need of food on the run, Bakery Stop in Whitemans Road, Silverstream, make great rolls, yummy chelsea buns and the best custard squares I’ve ever tasted! Favourite Place to Take Visitors to the CityDavid says: I reckon the Kaitoke Regional Park is hard to beat, with the river, the walks, the swing bridge and so many great picnic

spots – and visitors comment on how great it is to have such a beautiful area right on our doorstep! Another place we’ve taken visitors is up to the old dam which is accessed from the end of Bridge Rd – an easy walk to a cool place that so many people don’t even know exists!

Favourite Things to do with family/friendsDavid says: I love walking. Sarah and I get out as often as we can to venture around our beautiful city. One of our favourite walks is heading down to the river

by County Lane, wandering along the river trail past the Royal Wellington Golf Club, up through Trentham Memorial Park and, after a stop for a hot chocolate at the Fig, back home again. It always makes me feel like I’ve had a mini holiday! As a family, we love walking to Heretaunga Park, picking up a pack of fish and chips each on the way (at the Sunken Chip), and spending a lazy evening kicking a ball around and enjoying each other’s company. What a great place to live and play!

Last-minute ritual for the Racing Baa Blacks at Trentham Memorial Park on Saturday as the whole team heads out to groom the track.

Day of good, old-fashioned fun at City summer carnivalChildren screamed as the rides swooped and climbed, the ghosts moaned, the air rifles cracked and good fun was had by all at the Upper Hutt Summer Carnival at Trentham Memorial Park on Saturday. Dodgems thumped and bumped, plastic balloons rolled around in plastic pools, Segway scooters swirled around their area, the jeeps around their own. Giant earth moving diggers nipped delicately in their arena, showing dainty precision in their work, and sturdy pine and poplar blocks were slammed apart by the combination of axe sharpness and strength of arm and body.

It was all fun.

Mayor Wayne Guppy was right into it.

“Everyone seemed to be having a great time in these tough times,” he said. “Everyone there was probably affected by Christchurch to some degree but they were all smiling and laughing.”

As the ice creams and candy floss worked their way over faces and tee shirts (not his, of course) and tongues took on startling hues, eyes turned aloft the Rimutaka Heli Services machine took another group aloft. “It was genuine, old fashioned fun, and to see everyone in the community letting go was just great,” Mr Guppy said.

All the fun of the Fair as Upper Hutt celebrated Summer last Saturday at Trentham Memorial Park, from the Baa Blacks at far right, to the diggers and the Upper Hutt Axemen’s Club celebrating 100 years of wood chopping in the city on the left.

The tragic events in Christchurch last week are a sober reminder of the need to be prepared for an earthquake, Regional Councillor Paul Swain says.

“We have watched in disbelief as people’s lives have been turned upside down. The loss of life, the injuries, the property damage and the impact on families have played out on our TV screens. It is almost impossible to fathom the enormity of what has happened, and our hearts go out to all of those who have been affected by this trag-edy,” Mr Swain said.

“We all know that we may face a similar situation at some stage. We can minimise the impact of a quake by being prepared,” Mr Swain said.

“In most emergencies we should

be able to stay in our homes. We should plan to be self-sufficient for at least three days, as emer-gency services will be severely stretched. Emergency items should include:

• Torch with spare batteries or a self-charging torch

• Radio with spare batteries

• Wind and waterproof cloth-ing, sun hats, and strong outdoor shoes.

• First aid kit and essential medicines

• Blankets or sleeping bags

• Pet supplies

• Toilet paper and large rub-bish bags for an emergency toilet

We should also plan to have enough food and water for at least three days, including:

• At least 3 litres of water per person, per day for drinking

• Additional water for washing and cooking

• Non-perishable food (canned or dried food)

• Food, formula and drinks for babies and small children

• A primus or gas barbeque to cook on

• A can opener

“Planning ahead is the best way of reducing the impact of an earthquake on our families. More info at www.getthru.govt.nz.”

Quake has big lessons for us all - Paul Swain

At left, New Zealand standing chop champion Patrick Barrett (right) slams through his block to win his heat, even when giving away up to 25 seconds as the backmarker. Other blocks were not so co-operative on the day- which is purely luck of the draw. Above, W Liddle and F Sefo took out the double-handed sawing as the sawdust flew.Below, the dust flew also for Mayor Wayne Guppy, but he and Waikanae sawyer H Rasmussen were not quite quick enough in the Celebrity Saw to beat Parapine owner John Moen and doluble handed champion F Sefo. Nigel Messenger, Upper Hutt Club, was third. The axemen’s carnival was the centenary celebration of woodchopping in Upper Hutt. Present was Malcolm Whiteman, proudly wearing the medal won by great grandfather Henry Whiteman in the first official chop in 1911.

can become overwhelming with all the planning involved – but it doesn’t need to. All the professionals needed to easily plan and execute the per-fect wedding, are right here in Up-per Hutt.VenueThree Upper Hutt venues are at-tracting attention from around the entire Wellington region - Wal-laceville Church, Dunlop Café and Function Centre and Trentham Gardens Function & Event Centre are putting Upper Hutt on the map as the place to be married.

Those who want the romantic

Wedding PlannerWedding PlannerThose who want the romantic

Wedding PlannerWedding PlannerThose who want the romantic countryside to say “I Do” in a cute heritage church, beside a bub-bling river or among lush green tree ferns are choosing Wal-laceville Church as their venue.

Set among fields and gardens with seating for 80 guests this timber church was built in 1893 and is only a short drive away from Upper Hutt CBD and its re-ception venues. The church and its grounds provide a picturesque backdrop for wedding photos. There is plenty of off street park-ing available beside the church. It has been operating for less than a year, but Dunlop Café and Function Centre has already de-veloped a reputation as top ven-ue for weddings and other func-tions – one where no request is impossible and every wedding is personal. Owners Theresa and Ma-ria personally ensure that every little detail is attended from designing a menu, to organizing a wedding cake, to personally ar-ranging the flowers on the tables.Their brand new modern func-tion rooms and intimate board room, beside and behind Dunlop Café are flexible and can provide seating for up to 130 people. The

Function Centre includes its own

From finger food to fully catered, Dunlop Café and Func-tion Centre has quickly developed a reputation for delicious food made from quality ingredients. While weddings are regularly held there, the centre is also avail-able for seminars, workshops and meetings with a board room ta-ble King Arthur would have been proud of.Facilities for the disabled or elder-ly are excellent with plenty of easy parking right at the door, ramp ac-cess and modern toilets.

Trentham Gardens Function & Event Centre is a long established and popular venue for wedding receptions. However it specializes in providing a venue for the cer-emony, photos and the reception all on the same site.“This is very popular for couples with elderly relatives, friends and family or with very young children among the guests,” they say.“It can be simpler and more re-laxed not to have to move ven-ues.”Trentham Gardens Function & Event Centre offers a variety of options for both indoor and out-door ceremonies and receptions.

Celebrant or Minister? It’s a little known fact that you don’t have to have an established rela-tionship with a local church to be married in one. Many local church-es will welcome an inquiry or al-ternatively a celebrant - who can conduct the wedding in a church, outdoors or at a function venue - is a popular option.Graham Small a long standing Upper Hutt resident and marriage celebrant who places emphasis on the personal aspect of the service

- in particular the wedding vows. With 17 years experience as a celebrant Graham says he enjoys working with couples to plan the special day to be everything they want it to be. As a trained minister Graham is able to provide a Chris-tian perspective if required and is also happy to design a secular cer-emony for those who prefer. While the first contact with a cel-

A popular trend these days is to use a family ring - one that belonged to one of the couple’s parents or grandparents. These can be re sized to fit or remodeled to create a new ring while still retaining that family connection. Local jeweller, Everson Manufacturing Jewellers can help with advice on how best to do this.Everson Manufacturing Jewellers is a well established Main Street identity and has been in business since 1982. They have a wide variety of rings on display which can be resized quickly and conveniently or they are happy to design and make a ring to suit the couple. “I couldn’t even hope to count the exact number of wedding and engagement rings we have made,” says jeweller Alan Everson. Design & Technology says she is looking forward to offering Upper Hutt people a quality service. Her new clothing alterations business will be open 5 days a week 10.00 – 3.00 Monday to Friday and 10-6 Thursdays. Leanne was educated, raised and started her career in Upper Hutt. After leaving Heretaunga College, her first job was with her now neighbour, Chez Elle Bridal Boutique, helping with hire garments and specialist bead work. This inspired her to develop her skills further and train as a Fashion Designer. After qualifying, at she opened a business offering bridal gowns and alteration services in central Wellington. She had many Upper Hutt clients in Wellington who even then sewed a seed of an idea about opening in her home town. After 11 successful years she took a break to raise her two boys Harrison (6) and Riley (3) with her husband Andrew. Many people may recognise her from this “break”. As well as raising her children, she also worked part time in the clothing industry.Leanne is excited to be returning to her much enjoyed work. She says by basing herself in her home town, she will be able to have the best of all worlds. She says she is looking forward to welcoming her Wellington clients who encouraged her to open in Upper Hutt, to her new location, along with new clients.Leanne’s family has had a long association with locally run

businesses – as well as Enid running Arcade Alterations, her uncle also ran a Coffee Lounge in Main Street for many years and her husband Andrew currently works at the Cossie Club as a Duty Manager. Leanne held a special open evening last week to showcase her skills to Upper Hutt people including local MP Chris Hipkins (pictured with Leanne).

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONFor the first time ever, the New Zealand Cheerleading Academy has opened its classes to boys. While the academy has been operating in Upper Hutt for nine-years, last week was the first time boys from eight to 13 years old were able to join the classes. And those who did loved it.“Cheerleading is about being strong and athletic, which can only be achieved through dedication and hard work,” says coach co-ordinator, Karen Russell. “It requires body strength, fitness, flexibility, stamina and does not mean being ‘thin’ (contrary to any perceptions),” she says.“So why wouldn’t it be suitable for boys?“We have had so much demand we decided to bite the bullet and do it she says.”Boys in class is not the only new thing for NZCA this year. They are also based at a new venue. Classes are now being held at the YMCA Gym, Somme Road Heretaunga. Previously they were held at Heretaunga College, but with a rebuild there underway, the location was not available this year.“We thank Heretaunga College for the use of their facility and are very excited to have moved to the YMCA gym in Heretaunga, a fantastic venue with brilliant facilities which will enable the club to grow and foster even more community involvement,” Karen says.NZCA was started in Upper Hutt at Oxford Crescent School in 2002 - all classes were taught by

Karen and fees with in line with other dance classes in the city at the time. umbers grew quickly and in 2006 a club was formed, which enabled fees to drop and even more young women became involved in the sport.  During a typical NZCA cheerleading year students cover cheers, chants, jumps, dance, stunts, pyramids, marching, gymnastics and many more activities. They perform in the community, do volunteer work and sit international syllabus exams. They do not compete.Lessons are based on Cheer Technique; the first structured cheerleading syllabus whose standards are endorsed by The British Cheerleading Association and administered by The International Dance Teachers Association.  With NZCA, students are able to gain internationally recognised cheerleading qual-ifications both as a student and as a coach.   “It’s not just the performing, voluntary work and exams though,” says Karen. “This is a great sport for the social side – meeting new people, making new friends, attending social gatherings and being involved with a fantastic bunch of students all striving for the same thing is great.Regular class times are:- Sparklers (5-7yrs) Thursdays 4-5pm, Angels (8-12 yrs) Thursdays 5 - 6.30pm, Stormers (13+)    Thursdays 6.30 - 8.30pm.For more information call Karen on 527 8009 or email [email protected]

“It’s not about going ‘rah rah’ in little skirts, but about being the biggest and best person you can be first and then focusing on the dancing and chanting next.

Boys get go-ahead from cheer-leaders

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONPinehaven School six year old, Xavier Lloyd (pictured) is one of the first children in Upper Hutt to participate in a new programme, moveMprove, designed to have all kiwi kids moving well, staying well, and enjoying physical activity for life .moveMprove is a GymSports New Zealand’s Foundation Skills Programme, which is to be run this year in schools, clubs and community facilities around NZ by accredited coaches.Rimutaka Gymsports has been accredited to run the programme and Pinehaven is the first local school to take up the offer.Sessions started last week with separate one-hour sessions for seniors, juniors and middle schoolers. It’s not all about gymnastics - every student will have one session a week for eight weeks learning movements designed to aid participation in all sports and life in general. Each week there will be a different focus skill – last week it was

landings – children participated in a variety of activities to help them with the skills required.GymSports NZ National Development Manager, Tas Evan who the developed the programme, was at the school for the first day and National Foundation Skills Manager, Shelley Gilliver was on hand at all sessions during the first week. She will be back again at the end.The programme receives funding from the National Government’s

Kiwisport allocation so there is minimal cost involved for schools and families.Rimutaka Gymsports are talking with other schools in Upper Hutt about delivering the programme this year – they have a target of 1000 students being involved this year. “This is a very exciting opportunity for the school children of Upper Hutt to become more physically active and prepare for any future sports involvement. It will also help the club to build stronger connections with the school community,” Rimutaka Gymsports manager, Julie Shanks says.“We hope other schools will be keen to participate.”

New movement programme starts up
