4K Center for Literacy NEWSLETTER May 2019 Principal Reflections…. This will be the final newsletter for the school year. Although I will not be writing any reflections for the next few months, please continue to watch your mail and email for correspondence from the elementary school office that your 5K student will be attending in the fall. In that same time, please know that you can always reach out to me by email and I will respond as quickly as possible. With that said, I would like to share a few thoughts about this past school year. As with all school years to this point, I have enjoyed watching our students grow academically and intellectually. I am very proud of the work that our teachers have engaged with to advance our studentsaware- ness of their own problem solving abilities and strengths. This has been no small task. In order to be effective with this, our staff has spent a lot of time reflecting on the opportunities that they have shaped for our students, thinking about the behaviors we want to see from them, and considering the language that we use in that effort. In doing all of this, adjustments were made and additional opportunities for students were created. All of this in the spirit of helping students develop an ownershipof their learning. I am confident that this learning is the most important learning that we can hope for. By inviting our students to become aware of their part in the learning process, we hope to create more engage- ment. After all, disengaged students tend to get by”, while engaged students create more sustain- able learning. This is important stuff for you to be aware of. As you engage with your child at home, we hope that you will watch for opportunities for your child to own their learning”. Unfortu- nately this also requires, in you, a willingness to allow some level of failure. It is very often the mis- takes that teach us the most. This could be illustrated in having your child learn to tie his/her shoes, ride a bike, measure something for a recipe, or just about any other new learning. There is no doubt that the most successful athletes have taken more risks, fallen more often and learned more about their sport as a result. The same is true of reading, writing, numeracy, etc. The one major caution that I pose however, is that we must keep their age and development in mind. None of the students from our school, this year, are ready to move out of the house. The important thing is that we continue to give them appropriate levels of ownership with their learning and growth. Keep them thinking, talking, discovering and playing. This is all done better with com- pany. That is to say, join them in reading, thinking, discovering and playing. Have a wonderful summer! Pop Tab Collection!

POP TAB UPDATE Thank you to everyone who collected their pop tabs and brought

them in. In combination with the Janssen Elementary, Sunrise Elementary, and

Ronald McDonald House. Keep on collecting your pop tabs through out the summer as

Lost and Found

Are you missing something?? Stop in at the 4K Center to see if it is in

our lost and found! All items not claimed by Monday, June 17th will be

donated to Goodwill.

Sunscreen at School

It is the District's guideline that we do not provide or allow students to share or use another

person's sunscreen, lip balm, lotion, etc., due to the potential for an allergic reaction to the

active ingredients in these products. With the warm sunny days forecasted ahead, parents

are encouraged to apply sunscreens at home prior to sending their child to school.

Are you planning a move?

Please notify the 4K Center if your family is moving or will be moving in the near future. It’s important

we maintain your current address for mailing purposes. Click HERE for a change of address form.
