County Awards
The application for county awards must be
accompanied by either a Career Portfolio or
Annual Achievement Application. The Career
Portfolio is a compilation of a youth’s
achievements in 4-H experiences, leadership, and
community involvement. The Annual Achievement
Application allows youth to focus on his or her
most important achievements in 4-H experiences,
leadership, and community service. This
application will be used to select winners for 4-H
Congress, Conference, scholarships, and other
leadership opportunities. Once a county award is
earned, 4-Hers age 15 years or older by January 1
can make changes and apply for the State level
review in mid January.

Presentation of Special Awards
I Dare You Award: Emily Neemeyer
Emily Neemeyer is not afraid to try new things, which is why the “I Dare You” award fits her perfectly. She is both a leader and a volunteer in her school, church, and community. An active young lady, she also plays multiple sports and dances. Yet Emily still makes time for 4-H projects, workshops, and other activities!
Quilting was a new project for Emily this year. Not only did she sew a fun, soccer quilt top at the 4-H workshop, but she also used her great-grandmother’s fabric to sew another—two quilt tops for the fair!
Emily applies what she has learned to improve her next project, already planning for the next year. With her goals set and her “I Dare You” personality, Emily has a bright future!
Glanzer Family Leadership Award: Emily Sholes
Counting the days and months until she was old enough to join the Carson Cow Tipper’s 4-H Club, Emily Sholes was intent on being a clown. AS the youngest member, she brought a joke or gag gift idea to club members. Her positive attitude and can-do attitude are contagious! Never hesitating to share her talents with others, she has the confidence to step forward and lead by example quietly. Making people smile or laugh as a clown are her goals.
When the club presented a program at a local library, Emily volunteered for a lead role. When more skits were needed for the program, Emily not only offered to do one with her grandmother but also performed a solo act. Other nine-year-olds may be intimidated by a room of 100+ people, but not Emily. She and her grandmother also provide an activity monthly for a local nursing home.
Emily has recently started helping plan and prepare activities. Emily invests a lot of time and energy—knowing the performance will be over all too quickly—preparing, performing, cleaning, and packing up. She even applies her own make up, which is a feat in itself when you think about a nine-year-old sitting for one hour. Then add a 90-minute travel, which means getting up at 5:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning without complaint. Emily contributes 100 percent effort to developing the skills to make people laugh and is a budding leader.

Oswald Family Spirit of 4-H Award: Brabec Family The 4-H program is family-oriented, and the Andy and April Brabec family has fully embraced the 4-H spirit! Active members of the Pioneers 4-H Club, Dylan, Carter, and Sadie are always jumping in to help. Every year at Clean Up Night before fair, you can see them scrubbing shelves, setting up tables, and heaving heavy boxes full of ribbons. They are reliable and willing whenever asked to help.
Before the sun even peeked out early Friday morning of fair, Andy and the kids were loading hogs. Andy even donated his time and fuel to use his own pick up and trailer to haul hogs to Tyson. Despite the early morning, they shoveled and carried panels to clean up the hog area, as well. The family is involved in other activities beyond 4-H in their community and school, as well. Whether making a project for fair or volunteering, the Brabec family embraces the “Spirit of 4-H.”
Patty Nelson “Making the Best Better” Memorial Award: Leighann Miller A ten-year member of the Newman Huskers 4-H Club, Leighann Miller is always willing to help with the younger members. With 31 members under the age of 10, this is no small feat! Leighann created the club display for the last five years. Although she has animals in the small animal barn, you can find her in the livestock barn helping where needed. She truly puts effort to “Make the Best Better” and takes pride in herdsmanship. Cleaning up wherever is needed, regardless whether it is her animal or not, Leighann puts her best foot forward. During the hot days, she checked waterers.
This past fair, Leighann helped a family with several animals by helping write nametags with a younger member of the family. Another time during fair, she was walking by the arena and noticed a mother with three kids in the ring. A couple of the calves were acting up, and Leighann jumped right in to help without being asked. She also helped weigh in this family’s calves. As the oldest member of the Newman Huskers 4-H Club, Leighann has been a good role model for the younger members and show how to “Make the Best Better”.
Outstanding 4-H Alumni: Katie Ferguson A 4-H mom, 4-H supporter, 4-H cat superintendent, an active member of the Madison County 4-H Council, Katie has gone above and beyond as a 4-H alumni of Madison County. You will find Katie in the 4-H building helping clean up, set up and take down exhibits, and anything else that needs to be done during the fair. She has also served as a vital part of the 4-H Council as the secretary. Within her role on the council, she shares numerous ideas to better the 4-H program and to create the best experience for every 4-Her in the county. We are grateful for the dedication and support from Katie; her loyalty to the 4-H program is priceless.
Outstanding 4-H Leader: Kurt Jackson As a community member and 4-H father, Kurt Jackson has been an exemplary role model. For the past four years, he has magnified his leadership as a 4-H leader of the Pioneer 4-H Club. He is punctual, communicates effectively, and responds almost immediately to our call. Kurt truly cares about the well-being of not only the members of his club, but all youth.
Kurt has also volunteered as a beef presenter at Life on the Farm for many years now, bringing cattle and even a horse a time or two. His enthusiasm for the ag industry and education is greatly apparent.
Madison County fair would not be the same without Kurt’s diligence in the hog area. His club donated fans for use by the 4-H program. He monitors the hogs. We also have Kurt to thank for the beautiful white doors that decorated the Style Show and the 4-H Office during the fair, as well as the wooden backdrop in the cake display area in the 4-H Building. He was nice enough to assemble and take down these backdrops.
Kurt is a leader, role model, and all-around caring person. The Pioneer 4-H Club is under strong leadership!

Outstanding 4-H Member: Stacey Frisch This year’s theme “4-H Makes Tomorrow’s Leaders” fits Stacey Frisch well. Throughout her nine years in 4-H, she has learned many skills to prepare her for her senior year of high school. A leader of many of clubs she is involved in, Stacey is president of National Honor Society, Student Council, Church Youth Council, and an officer of the Speech and Drama Club. She has also been a class officer for three years.
Stacey is always ready to help at fair, school, church, or community. When the National Honor Society sponsors a blood drive for the Red Cross, Stacey is involved. She has been a faithful volunteer at 4-H Clean Up Night prior to fair, writes articles and sells ads for the 4-H Special Edition, exhibits dozens of projects at the county and state fair levels, and shows multiple livestock species. As she said in her 4-H story, “4-H has always been one of my top priorities during summer. I spend months preparing, a hectic week showing and exhibiting my projects, just to turn around and start planning for next year”. She is one of two people whose payout sheets span two pages. Stacey has been an emcee and narrator multiple times at the 4-H Style Show. She has also been on the 4-H Council two years. During the fair this year, Stacey helped complete strangers sew at the Quilt of Valor booth.
Stacey can be counted on whenever an opportunity to serve others arises. She is a good role model for the youth of Madison County. If “4-H Makes Tomorrow’s Leaders”, then Stacey is sure to be a leader tomorrow because she has shown time and again that she is a leader today.
Heart of 4-H Award (Friends of 4-H): Deb May You could say that 4-H runs in her blood or is a family tradition. As a 4-H alumna of Madison county herself, Deb May continued sharing her 4-H heart as a 4-H mom, 4-H Council member and president six years straight, a Madison County Ag Society member and officer, in addition to various other roles she has held throughout the years.
Deb has been vital to the beef program in Madison County. The livestock shows at the fair would not run as smoothly without Deb, such as changing the pen set up for the various shows, delivering water, helping with the microphone, and all the other behind-the-scenes work she does. Deb’s leadership and support have helped grow 4-H into the program it is today. We are grateful that Deb continuously opens her heart to help 4-H.
4-H Advocate of the Year: Stephanie Bates To advocate is “to speak or write in favor of; recommend publically”. Stephanie Bates of the Norfolk Daily News has been a very public advocate of 4-H. We greatly appreciate her dedication as the advertisement manager for the 4-H Special Edition.
Last year when we struggled to find 4-H members to sell ads, Stephanie went above and beyond her duties and took on the challenge herself. With 10,750 copies of the 4-H Special Edition published, selling ads is imperative. Stephanie has a friendly personality and a can-do attitude. She is a pleasure to work with and a great advocate of 4-H!
N150 Extension Supporter Award: Christian Ohl In honor of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s N150, special recognition of a great supporter of Nebraska Extension is being awarded this year. When the twenty-year lease at NECC was nearing its end, Nebraska Extension needed a new home. Christian Ohl adopted Nebraska Extension and has been instrumental throughout the process of searching, purchasing, moving, and settling in to our new location. Commissioner Ohl has always been just a phone call away for our many questions. While the more obvious signs of support are appreciated, little acts such as coming on a weekend to flush dry pipes with water when they smelled, sanding a wall to be painted, or scooping snow from the sidewalk show just how dedicated he is.
We would like to thank all who support Nebraska Extension, but especially recognize Christian Ohl for his generous time and support of Nebraska Extension.
