Staffing Changes During the holiday period Mrs Amanda Sheridan has been appointed as Acng Educaon Officer Curriculum. Amanda will be based in the Brisbane Catholic Educaon Office and will serve in this posion for all of Term 3 and the first two weeks of Term 4. Amanda will return to St Joachim’s at the beginning of Week 3, Term 4. This is a wonderful opportu- nity for Amanda, and an acknowledgement of her high level of skills and knowledge in the curriculum area. Amanda will connue to visit Holland Park in the educaon officer role. During Amanda’s absence in Term 3, I am grateful for Mrs Randall’s willingness to take on the Assistant Principal Religious Educaon & Curriculum Support Teacher role. As a result of this appointment, I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Jo McConville will teach Year 6 Red in Term 3. Mrs Randall will be taking long service leave for all of Term 4, and therefore Mrs McConville will connue teaching Year 6 Red for this period. This week we also welcome Mrs Megan O’Neil who is teaching Year 1 Red whilst Mrs Kate Houlihan is taking 4 week’s long service leave. Dance Lessons Next week dance lessons will commence at St Joachim’s for all students. The Australian Curriculum: The Arts includes five Arts subjects. These are Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts. The curriculum entles all Australian students to engage with these five Arts subjects throughout primary school with opportunies for students to specialise in one or more Arts subjects from the beginning of secondary school. The Australian Curriculum Area: The Arts (Dance) requires expert knowledge and we are so pleased that Miss Tegan Wilson will connue to facilitate and teach the program in 2015. Whilst Miss Wilson is teaching dance two days each week, we welcome Mrs Julie Stokes back to St Joachim’s to teach Year 2 Blue. Building Update During the holidays the builders have made great progress to safely remove the administraon building. The library has been extended and the first coats of paint were applied. The alarm, data and phone systems have all been upgraded. Foundaons are being prepared for the new student amenies at the end of the Year 4 & 5 building. Whilst we have lost some of the play area on the oval, I am looking forward to the end result when we will have the opportunity to extend the oval onto the bitumen area, install an irrigaon system, re-turf and install secons of arficial turf in high wearing locaons (along the fence lines). Front Office The office is now located at the top of the ramp behind the undercover area. Access to the office for those parents with prams etc. will be up this ramp. If you are entering the school site via Yulede Street, it will be best to walk in between the Prep and Year 2 buildings, and then walk in front of the year 3 classrooms, and travel up the ramp. Respecng the Local Residents Brisbane City Council have been receiving complaints from residents in Yulede, Crown and Emma Streets. These complaints relate directly to parents parking on yellow lines, and vehicles being parked too close to driveways. Cars parking in front of houses. Is this legal? Unless there are No Stopping signs or lines in place, parking on the street is legal. However, if the car is parked across the driveway, prevenng access, on a yellow line or disobeying official parking signs, residents can (and have been) phoning the Council to report the problem. I have noced residents taking photos of vehicles too.

Principal’s Message 14th July 2015Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Term 3. I trust you had a great break and are ready for another great term full of wonderful events.

Staffing ChangesDuring the holiday period Mrs Amanda Sheridan has been appointed as Acting Education Officer Curriculum. Amanda will be based in the Brisbane Catholic Education Office and will serve in this position for all of Term 3 and the first two weeks of Term 4. Amanda will return to St Joachim’s at the beginning of Week 3, Term 4. This is a wonderful opportu-nity for Amanda, and an acknowledgement of her high level of skills and knowledge in the curriculum area. Amanda will continue to visit Holland Park in the education officer role.

During Amanda’s absence in Term 3, I am grateful for Mrs Randall’s willingness to take on the Assistant Principal Religious Education & Curriculum Support Teacher role. As a result of this appointment, I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Jo McConville will teach Year 6 Red in Term 3. Mrs Randall will be taking long service leave for all of Term 4, and therefore Mrs McConville will continue teaching Year 6 Red for this period.

This week we also welcome Mrs Megan O’Neil who is teaching Year 1 Red whilst Mrs Kate Houlihan is taking 4 week’s long service leave.

Dance LessonsNext week dance lessons will commence at St Joachim’s for all students. The Australian Curriculum: The Arts includes five Arts subjects. These are Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts. The curriculum entitles all Australian students to engage with these five Arts subjects throughout primary school with opportunities for students to specialise in one or more Arts subjects from the beginning of secondary school.

Whilst we have lost some of the play area on the oval, I am looking forward to the end result when we will have the opportunity to extend the oval onto the bitumen area, install an irrigation system, re-turf and install sections of artificial turf in high wearing locations (along the fence lines).

Front OfficeThe office is now located at the top of the ramp behind the undercover area. Access to the office for those parents with prams etc. will be up this ramp. If you are entering the school site via Yuletide Street, it will be best to walk in between the Prep and Year 2 buildings, and then walk in front of the year 3 classrooms, and travel up the ramp.

Do not stop or park at any time in zones marked with a solid yellow line on the road.

This is a ‘No Stopping’ zone. It is illegal to stop on yellow lines to drop/collect pas-sengers.

Two Minute Passenger Loading ZonesPassenger Loading Zones allow you to stop for up to two minutes to pick up or drop off your child. This should be enough time to help your child with luggage and seatbelts. While it is preferable that you do not leave your car, you are permitted to do so to assist a young child, however, you still need to be mindful of the two-minute limit. Tips for drivers picking up or setting down children:• Move forward as space becomes available• Ensure your child watches for their ride and moves promptly to the vehicle• Always drop off and pick up in a designated passenger zone• Where possible, remain with your vehicle at all times when using the passenger zone• Observe the time restriction on the passenger zone – do not overstay• Make sure passengers use the safety door or the footpath side door when getting into and out of the car• Do not double park• Do not park across driveways• Do not u-turn close to the school Parent Enquiries & ConcernsOur school acknowledges parents may occasionally have a concern in relation to their child’s education. St Joachim’s staff members are committed to resolving issues raised by parents or guardians in a prompt, positive and open manner.

Any member of the teaching staff may receive concerns or complaints, either verbally or in writing. Our school aims to resolve concerns at the first point of contact with a staff member. If the concern is not resolved at this point, the matter may be escalated to a higher authority i.e. from teacher to principal for resolution.

Generally, complaints regarding specific issues in relation to an individual child (curriculum, reporting, behaviour management, homework etc.) should be discussed with the classroom teacher in the first instance. However, mat-ters related to our school more generally, including issues of school policy, should be discussed with the principal.

A flow chart for queries and concerns can be viewed on our website.http://www.stjoachimscps.qld.edu.au/Parent%20Informa-tion/Pages/Grievance-Procedures-for-Formal-Complaints.aspx

School UniformThe wearing of the school uniform is compulsory at St Joachim’s. It gives children a sense of pride and identification with St Joachim’s School community.

During these cooler months please ensure your child is wearing the correct school jumper. Please ensure that girls wear hair ties and scrunchies that are the school colours (black, blue, white or maroon). The sports shoes should also be predominantly white.

We are very proud of our school and wearing the correct school uniform is a good way to demonstrate this. Thank you for your support with this.

P&F MeetingI look forward to meeting the P&F in the school library tonight at 7.00pm. The main agenda item will be to discuss the results of the recent parent survey regarding the introduction of a P&F donation. All parents are welcome.

Acting PrincipalThis Thursday and Friday I will be attending a two-day retreat at Santa Teresa Spirituality Centre, Ormiston. In my absence, I thank Mrs Wendy Randall who will be acting Principal. Have a great week ahead,

Chris

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you had an enjoyable break with your children, whether you travelled or relaxed at home. My family holiday took us to the Queensland outback and it is not until you travel out to areas such as Longreach and Winton that you fully comprehend the vastness of our state. It also makes you realise how very fortunate we are with the amount of rain we have received and how little those out west have received. As a school community we are fortunate to have you, our very generous families always ready to help those in need. In the newsletter at the end of last term, Amanda included a photo of the boxes and boxes of donated tins for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Below is a photo of George and Margaret from St Vincent de Paul with some members of our Joey’s Justice group after they loaded the car.

This week I will be meeting with our Joey’s Justice to discuss how we as a community can reach out to those in need and I know they will have some fantastic ideas.

This week is NAIDOC Week - We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate. This year the theme highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ strong spiritual and cultural connection to land

and sea. The theme is an opportunity to pay respects to country; honour those who work tirelessly on preserving land, sea and culture and to share the stories of many sites of significance or sacred places with the nation. This year’s theme was also chosen specifically to highlight and celebrate the anniversary of the ‘Handback’ of Uluru, one of these sacred sites, to its traditional owners on 26 October 30 years ago.

On Friday 24 July we will celebrate and thank God for the gifts of our Grandparents with a special liturgy at 9am followed by a morning tea in the hall. More information will be sent home over the next week so keep a look out for this!

Uniform Shop NewsDear Parents

Please be aware that from the start of Term 4, 2015, there will unfortunately be a small price increase in uniform costs.

The reason for this increase is an across the board price rise from our uniform supplier.

If you would like to purchase uniforms at current prices, please pop into the Uniform Shop in Term 3.

For parents buying a number of uniforms (for example, cur-rent prep students who need day uniforms for 2016 or for prep students starting in 2016) we can arrange to have uniforms put aside at the current price. Please drop into the Uniform Shop to discuss your requirements.

Thank youEloise CampbellUniform Shop Convenor

School  Chess  Program  for  St  Joachim’s  Primary  School  2015

Lessons  cater  for  all  ages  and  abilities

The  Value  of  Chess  in  Education Children  need  to  be  exposed  to  a  myriad  of  opportunities  in  their  young  lives,  whether  these  be  artistic,  sporting  or  literary  pursuits,  to  enable  them  to  discover  what  excites  them  and  what  can  contribute  to  their  life  skills  in  an  enjoyable  way.

Chess  can  provide  one  of  those  opportunities.  We  have  found  that  girls  and  boys  from  all  backgrounds,  rich  or  poor,  sporting  or  otherwise,  including  those  with  learning  or  physical  disabilities,  choose  to  make  chess  one  of  their  passions.

From  the  extensive  research  conducted  all  around  the  world,  it  has  been  found  that  chess  helps  children  to  ‘think  smarter’.

In  a  nutshell,  this  is  why  children  like  to  learn  chess:

They  realise  it  helps  them  to  think  smarter. In  most  cases,  after  only  a  short  time,  they  will  be  able  to  beat  their  parents  at  chess.

They  will  be  able  to  compete  in  a  school  team  in  the  inter-schools  chess  competitions.  Most  kids  find  this  to  be  an  awesome  experience

The  most  important  .  .  .  because  it’s  fun!

Who me?Well, do you think music at Mass is important?

Absolutely!What can you do?

Who me???Yes, you!

I can sing in tune but so can everyone. No not everyone can, and we need more singers.

Who me? Yes, you! Look it’s time to stop thinking that others can keep the Church going. The parish needs both singers and keyboard players. Other instruments would be great too.
