3FOREWORD

Welcome to the summer edition of ourmagazine and as I write this editorial it isthe start of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, atournament that sees the very bestfootballing nations competing on theinternational stage. This tournament takesplace every four years, yet there are localbusinesses in South Cheshire competingon the international stage every day andwith great success.

We have companies in South Cheshiresuccessfully producing and selling productsfrom many different sectors to all over theglobe, including Bentley’s luxury vehicles,Fayrefield’s dairy products, Mornflake’s oatsand Busch GVT’s vacuum technology andthere are many more. It is not onlyproducts that can be exported abroad, butas you will see in the magazine, CTCHealthcare (p.12) have taken theirexpertise to Shanghai, so congratulationson their success. If these companies haveinspired you to think about trading globally, then contact the Chamber who can helpyou on your way to selling your productsor service abroad.

There are questions being asked of theUnited Kingdom’s sole representative atthe World Cup, England, who many believewill not make an impact at this year’stournament, many suggest it is the lack ofinvestment at the grass roots level. This isno different for businesses, and it is theChamber’s responsibility to make sure wepush the needs of the business communitylocally and nationally, to make sure theright environment is created to helpbusinesses start, grow and prosper.

As you can see form the front cover, ourChairman John Dunning and I attended theBritish Chambers of Commerce AnnualConference in London, and took time outto visit our local MP Edward Timpson.

While we lobby locally, being an accreditedChamber in the British Chambers ofCommerce network gives us strength innumbers and sends a strong message tolocal and national Government about the

needs of the business community. At theconference, there were debates,

presentations and keynote speakers fromthe private and public sector coveringtopics such as national infrastructure, skills, education, finance, export support andinnovation. Like the team who lifts the FIFAWorld Cup trophy, a local company’ssuccess will have been achieved through acombination of many factors and in SouthCheshire we must make sure that the rightconditions are created throughcollaboration and partnership with allstakeholders.

As you will see in the magazine therecontinues to be good news for SouthCheshire, companies having local andinternational success plus announcementsabout significant investment in majorinfrastructural developments in the area(p.27). There are many events showcasedthroughout this edition and great examplesof local companies working together andmaking a difference for South Cheshire.

We all wish the England team well in Braziland we know that they must take theiropportunities and enjoy an element of luckto achieve success. In South Cheshire, wehave the right ingredients and we shouldn’tneed luck to achieve great success, but wemust do is work together to make themost of every opportunity.

I hope you enjoy this magazine and if yourcompany has good news to share, pleasedo not hesitate to contact the Chamber.

Welcometo the Summer edition of4Front, the magazine forbusinesses in South Cheshire

The Chamber is throwing its weight behind a scheme urging localcompanies to get on their bike.

Our Chief Executive Paul Colman is the latest recruit to theGovernment-backed Bike to Work Scheme, cycling into CreweBusiness Park from his home in Sandbach.

He said: “Latest figures show that 65% of people in Britain are notdoing the basic minimum recommended level of physical activity. The level of cycling is lagging well behind other European countries.

“Crewe once hadmore cyclists than anywhere else in thecountry for a town ofits size. Rail workersmade up a largeproportion of the localpeople cycling towork. We fully supportthe scheme whichmakes cycling possiblewhilst saving money aswell.”

The scheme gives employers an opportunity to offer bicycles totheir employees at a greatly reduced price - usually about 30 to40% off the full retail price.

The employee does not have to use the bike to go to work everyday but if they do get into the habit it has been provencountrywide that this frees up the need to provide bigger carparking spaces and is also better for the environment.

Chamber member J.E.Williams & Son ofEdleston Road in Crewe operates the schemein South Cheshire.

They can also arrange to come along to yourworkplace, give a demonstration of theproducts and tell you more about the scheme.

8 CHAMBER NEWS

Getting your foot inside the door ofthe world of work is a vital first step toa life of earning and learning, andincreasingly many people both here inCrewe & Nantwich and elsewhere areturning to high-quality, employer-ledapprenticeships to help them on theirway.

That's why, in light of the 51 newapprenticeships announced by Bentleyin Crewe, I wanted to update you onimportant, further progress withapprenticeships reform.

Since 2010 the number of apprentices has doubled, andapprenticeships are becoming a new norm for many moreschool leavers who see the value that many local businesses doin a solid vocational training background.

However, I know that locally when I talk to small businesses whohaven’t yet taken the plunge and hired an apprentice, their mainworry is whether they’ll be buried in paperwork.

The good news is that under this Government employing anapprentice is now simpler than ever. Not only that but we havealso put employers in the driving seat; designing newapprenticeships so that in future they will work even better forboth employers and apprentices.

As a result we've seen real progress in boosting apprenticeships, both in terms of quality and quantity:

· 1.7 million apprenticeships have been delivered, and we areon track for 2 million over the course of this Parliament.

· There has been an increase of 103,300 in the number ofemployers taking on apprentices since 2009/10 (representingan increase of 45.2%).

· And, the number of high quality, full apprenticeships hasdoubled among young people aged between 16 and 18, from53,600 in 2009/10 to 110,900 in 2012/13.

The next step in this process is reforming the wayapprenticeships are paid for, so that employers can take the leadon both standards and training.

This will mean that colleges, training providers and universitieswill need to provide the training employers need to fulfil thestandards they have set. It will also dramatically simplify thefunding rules and processes.

But you don’t have to take my word for it. Here is what thirty-five leading trade organisations and businesses – large and small– wrote in a letter to the a leading national newspaper:

“Apprenticeships build the country’s skills base, support industriesand create opportunities for young people leading to well-paidjobs.”

With our strong local economy able to offer a diverse range ofapprenticeship opportunities, backed up by a growing mix oftraining routes to choose from, let’s get behind apprenticeshipsand the employers who offer them, make the process simpler, and get our young people into the skilled jobs we need and theydeserve.

Employers - be ready for the pension shake-upThe Chamber is hosting a series of Business Briefings to informmembers on various issues that will affect their businesses.

The first takes place at the Chamber offices on Monday, August 4 when Gary Greer (pictured) senior partner at AffordBond Chartered Accountants in Nantwich, will shed light on autoenrolment.

Chamber chief executive Paul Colman said: “This new legislationmakes it compulsory for employers to enrol their workers into apension scheme. It has been phased in to include companies ofall sizes and has prompted many enquiries to the Chamber.

“This event will tell members what their responsibilities are, thetime-scales involved and how to lessen the impact on theirbusinesses.”

The landmark scheme represents a massive shake-up to the wayBritish workers save for their retirement.

The state pension was first introduced in 1909 when the maximumpayment was five shillings – 25p – a week. Thanks to healthierlifestyles and medical advances, today’s 65-year-olds are expectedto live to 86.

The Government says AE will help tackle concerns about an oldage poverty crisis, with people living longer but failing to put awayenough for their later years.

Afford Bond presents the following facts to consider before theBusiness Seminar.

Employers will have to enrol 11million eligible workers acrossthe UK to comply with this newgovernment legislation. All willhave to contribute in one wayor another and the total andcomplete responsibility liesentirely with employers.

Auto Enrolment will bemonitored and regulated byThe Pensions Regulator. Theyhave already drafted 14manuals relating to Pensions,Payroll matters, Compliance,Administration and Employeesafeguarding procedures.

Employers must diligently follow the requirements to avoid thehefty penalties the government will impose on those not meetingtheir duties. Currently those penalties stand at £2,500 per day

9CHAMBER NEWS

‘The only way is up’ - economic chiefBusiness leaders flocked to hear an upliftingmessage from one of the country’s leadingvoices on global economic forces.

Keith Wade, chief economist at assetmanagement company Schroders inLondon, was guest speaker at an EconomicBreakfast staged by the South CheshireChamber of Commerce at Crewe Hall.

The event, sponsored by Jones SheridanFinancial Consulting in Crewe, deliveredpositive news to a gathering of more than50 members.

Mr Wade, a spokesman in national press, predicted interest rates would remain lowto 2016. After that, a modest rise of up to3%, could be expected. In the US risinghouse prices were driving forward recovery

in construction and household balancesheets, and the UK could be facing a housingboom.

He said: “The UK is doing what it alwaysdoes best – generating recovery throughthe housing market. It has also shown howgood it is at creating jobs. However it hasnot been so good at generating wagegrowth. While employment is booming, thequality of jobs is less positive.”

The soaring number of people turning toself-employment had been a surprise andhighlighted enterprising British spirit at itsbest.

Manufacturing, he said, was at its strongestsince the 1970s. While the sector was toosmall to engineer a complete economicrecovery, its performance was “extremelyencouraging.”

He touched on issues with Scotland’s bid forindependence as it heads towards aSeptember 2014 vote. Preferring the marketto remain integrated, he was firmly in the‘no’ camp.

He welcomed plans for HS2 which wouldbroaden the market and take the “heat” offthe South.

His presentation coincided with the latestquarterly economic survey from theChambers of Commerce in the North Westwhich also points to the housing market

leading the recovery process, with propertyprices up by around 6% in the region.

The service sector, retail and manufacturingwere top performers in the first quarter of2014. Tourism and leisure were also on theup.

Chamber chief executive Paul Colman said:“South Cheshire is making a strong recovery.Exporting has increased and unemploymentis down. Despite difficult economiccircumstances, our local companies havebucked the national trend and performedwell against the odds.

“Bentley has declared its confidence in thearea by announcing an £800m investmentinto the world’s most luxurious SUV. TheA500 from Junction 16 is to be dualled andCrewe is in a prime location to takeadvantage of geothermal energy. On top ofthat there is a strong indication it willbecome a fully integrated high-speed railhub revitalising the area to a whole newlevel.

“Local businesses should be positive aboutthe area’s future.”

10 PORTAL NEWS

Online social networks are webs of relationships that grow from the personal interactions of human beings over time, as well as from the technological infrastructure that connects those humans. It takes time and effort to build momentum.

If you’re feeling a bit sceptical about your active involvement on the South Cheshire Chamber Portal and unsure whether your online engagement is worth your time, then the following reasons will persuade you to be more active:

Why your active profile on the Chamber Portal matters

The great advantage of online networking platforms is not how much information can be put out by the organisations and

individuals but the kind of conversations they make possible. The knowledge of how to use the technology, combined with the

willingness and enthusiasm to use it to their strategic advantage, will create the differentiator for those who actively use it.

Cultivating a Community

The fundamental aspect of any network, besides bringing together people with shared interest to create conversations and promotions, is to cultivate a community. When businesses join the Chamber, they become part of your community. Their involvement through the network gives valuable insight about the community and the individual business that form part of it.

Informationand Recognition

Potential prospects and clients check a business profile to find information about a company and to see if and how

they are engaging on the network. Profile pages that haven’t been updated, few connections, and empty activity timeline shows a clear lack of interest in engaging with the

local business community. If a business profiles stays current with its activity, potential prospects will notice.

Repeated ExposureA clear benefit of online networking through the Chamber

Portal is the repeat exposure of a business within the network. Regular updates have the opportunity to remind the

community over and over again about what a business has to offer, how good they are at offering them and how

others will benefit from those offerings.

Brand ReputationThe repeat exposure provided through regular

engagement serves as a powerful brand-building tool. News updates, blogs and comments positions and

informs others about the organisation. With consistent effort and great content, a brand can build its reputation

around its values, benefits, and advantages.

Demonstrate AuthorityFor consultants, coaches and other service-based businesses,

the online network can be a very powerful platform to showcase and establish authority in their field, making them the go-to resource for their target audience. Sharing great

content, answering questions and engaging regularly serve the audience who can inevitably be turned into customers.

“The atmosphere at the Chamber remains as friendly as thefirst day I arrived and have discovered one of your traditions –tea time! In France it is uncommon to drink or eat at work.

Take pressure off withpayroll service

Long-standing Chambermember SGW Payroll isoffering outsourced payrollservices to help businesseswith auto enrolment.

What is auto enrolment?

In October 2012 thegovernment changed thelaw on the work placepension scheme, applicableto millions of workers inthe UK. Workers contribute

automatically into a pension scheme - this is to top up their statepension. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure theemployee has a qualifying pension scheme in place by theirstaging date for them to be enrolled into.

Who will be automatically enrolled into a workplacepension?

The new scheme means that anyone who works in the UK agedover 22 and under the state pension age, if not already in aqualified pension scheme and earning more than £10,000, will beautomatically enrolled.

SGW Payroll say: “There is a vast amount of paperwork involvedincluding pension reports, correspondence to staff and transferof data to pension companies. SGW Payroll takes the pressureoff and can manage this for businesses.”

Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . .By the time this piece goes to press we should be well into themadness of international patriotism that is the Football World Cup.

I have recently returned from a trip to Belgium where it wasdistinctly evident that somewhat foolishly, they have adopted theblinkered optimism which we in England have burdened ourselveswith, over so many fruitless campaigns.

A recent 20 victory over Sweden in a warm up match was seen asno more than the first step towards their inevitable crowning asWorld Champions in July. I did try and point out that the Swedesappeared less than enthusiastic and that the midfield four bore aremarkable resemblance to ABBA, but this was dismissed as anirrelevance.

Everywhere was adorned with World Cup promo items where Isuppose it does help that the biggest selling beer in the country isthe main sponsor. My cousin kindly gave me two flags to slot intomy side windows which I would have accepted were it not for thefact that the good people of Crewe and Nantwich would have takensome persuading that it is the Belgian flag that has Black, Red andYellow vertical stripes as opposed to the German flag where thesame colours are horizontal. I somehow feel that the sight of these

colours on any car during the World Cupwould not be well received and that theopportunity for my more detailedexplanation of their origin would be limited.

You should all be aware that David Platt’sname is still cursed in Belgium for his effortsat Italia 90 and there is a strong belief thatthis is their first opportunity to repair theheart break of that moment some 24 yearago. On the basis that Wayne Rooneydoesn’t emulate him in Brazil should theymeet then at least I have a legitimate fallback option in the unlikely event that England fall short. Far morerewarding than merely supporting all Germany’s opponents or anyother team that happens to have a member of your ownPremiership Team’s Squad hidden within their line up.

In the event that you do find the time within this carnival of fun andfrustration to consider your business’s growth and always assumingthat my complimentary tickets for the tournament have still notarrived, then the Chamber, just like Goalkeeper Rob Green’s legs inthe last World Cup, will be open for business.

SG WORLD

Crewe-based SG World has forged a prestigious link with shoppinggiant The Arcadia Group.

The Group owns many of the UK’s High Street brands such as BHS,Burton, Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge.

When it came to upgrading its visitor ID system, it turned to SGWorld for help.

Matt McDonnell, Fire, Health and Safety Manager Top Shop/Topman,said: “We are situated on one of the busiest streets in centralLondon. The Topshop/Topman visitor reception area is a constanthive of activity, the gateway for 1000 plus staff and over 50 visitorsper week. I wanted a visitor management system that was easy touse for this volume of people, which would contribute to site healthand safety and, most importantly, reflect the brand.”

The SG World visitor pass system allows organisations to issue allof their visitors with a branded ID pass featuring health & safety rulesthat must be followed whilst on-site, a key component of Regulation

3 of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.

The site has a specific two-stage evacuation process which isprinted on the actual pass and can be drawn to the visitor’sattention for reading as they wait to be collected from reception.

This pass is then visibly worn by the visitor throughout their stay ina clear plastic wallet with a branded lanyard, clearly indicating thatthey are authorised to be on site. Once the visit is complete, thepass can be handed back in to the point of issue and theEmergency Evacuation Register updated indicating that the visitorhas now left the site.

The passes are also used to identify visiting contractors and wornin an armband wallet.

He added: “I would describe our previous system as adequate butit didn’t project the professional image we needed for our flagshipstore. Visitors didn’t always return the old paper passes whereas theSG World design encourages them to hand the badges back andbe formally checked out through the visitor book.

“Contractors would occasionally remove the neck lanyard passes ifthey got in the way when working whereas the armbands arecompletely unobtrusive so the contractor ID is clearly visible for thewhole duration on the job, which is a definite improvement.

“It was very easy to work with SG World. All of our requirementswere handled promptly and efficiently.”

‘Good infrastructure is at the heart of our Year of Delivery’– Michael Jones, Cheshire East CouncilA message from Councillor Michael Jones, Leader of CheshireEast Council.

Since I became Leader in 2012, my focus has been on bringing-in jobs and investment. Everything we do tries to make CheshireEast a great place to live, visit and invest in.

This is the challenge I set my officers and I’m proud to say that2014 will be our year of delivery.

There’s the prospect of a HS2 superhub station in Crewe forstarters. We’ve worked hard on our bid and the major reportsfrom Sir David Higgins and Lord Deighton show that Crewe isthe best, most logical place to build a new station.

We find out this autumn whether we have been successful. Ifso, then it’s a game-changer for the whole of South Cheshire, bringing in £1.5 billion of new investment and creating up to60,000 new jobs.

It will revolutionise our connectivity, reducing travel times toLondon to just 58 minutes. But it’s not just about shortenedjourney times.

What HS2 means is getting badly needed extra capacity for newpassenger and freight services while at the same time preserving

our local rail services.

Talking of infrastructure, work is about to begin on improvingthe capacity of Junction 16 of the M6/ A500 near Barthomley, aspart of the Government’s Pinch Point Programme. Again, capacity is the name of the game.

Then there’s our Local Plan. We have just submitted it toministers and hope to find out in the autumn whether we havebeen successful. It is the culmination of four years’ careful workand 40,000 submissions from the public. It will provide ablueprint for jobs-led sustainable growth up until 2030.

Finally, our geothermal energy project in Crewe is making goodprogress. We have enough potential under Crewe to giveeveryone in Britain a hot daily shower for 142 years!

So our approach to infrastructure is clear. Make the most ourgeography by getting the right road and rail systems in place.Maximise the potential of our natural assets, especially in energy.Get a robust plan in place to deliver sustainable housing andjobs and that meets the needs of people across Cheshire Easttoday, and in the future.

Cllr David Topping, Environment PortfolioHolder, Cheshire East Council, commented"It's great to extend our close workingrelationship with our business community inencouraging sustainable travel in Crewe.Forming this new Partnership is a verypositive step".

Delegates also heard Fiona Soutar from JMPTravel Consultants explain the travelplanning process, giving real life examples ofwhat had been achieved in other parts ofthe UK by similar LSTF schemes. Partnersincluding MMU, recently voted the UK's'Greenest University' and ctchealthcare alsoshared best practice.

Clair Visco, Smarter Travel Officer withCheshire East Council and the SouthCheshire Chamber of Commerce, said:“We'd like to work with more employers toease the daily commute faced by staff andkeep Crewe businesses moving forward.”
