Human Geography (AP) 482

One Semester

Prerequisite: Geography 412 and Department approval

Rationale

Human Geography is a class for those students who wish to pursue the study of geography beyondthe introductory course, and potentially receive advanced placement in the college setting. If a high enough

score is achieved on the advanced placement test in May, an introductory social science course (required at

Missouri state universities) may be bypassed.

Human Geography Course GoalsThe geography student will:

1) Be able to analyze land use patterns2) become more familiar with maps.3) have a deeper knowledge of all sections of the world.4) have a greater appreciation for people with different beliefs and cultures.5) be prepared to score well on the geography Advanced Placement examination.

y The World Wide Web including Google Earth Geography in the News from NY Times and other sources Population Reference Bureau

y Photographs taken by the instructor illustrating geographic phenomena in Anglo America, Mexico,Dominican Republic, Europe, Israel and Palestine, China, and Japan put into digital presentations.

y The Power of Place(a series of 26 half-hour videos), the Annenberg/CPB Multimedia CollectionTests and gradingAll tests consist of two equal sections: Multiple choice and Free Response.

The tests comprise the vast majority of the grade with results curved to the highest grade in the class.

Study sessionsThree 1 hour sessions outside of normal class time will be offered exclusively to prepare for the APexamination.
