48 Migrants of Xiamen

Home-Work is a platform setup through the combination of different disciplines (Graphic design, Product design, Fine Art and Lectures) in order to search for what the word “HOME” means. From 21 May to 27 Jun 2012, Home-Work received the opportunity to take part in the research with 48 students from TKK College of Xiamen, China. 23rd of January 2012. It’s Chinese new year. London, San Francisco, Lusaka, Banja Luka, Amsterdam; in every city where Chinese men and women have migrated for their career, study or marriage throughout the century, houses are decorated with colorful symbols, new clothes are bought and fireworks light up the skies. China’s cities are plunged into chaos as 130 million migrant workers travel back to their hometown to visit parents and children for the New Year’s holiday. This mass exodus is the world’s largest human migration. Xiamen is located in China’s southeast coast, west of Taiwan. The permanent population in Xiamen stood at 3.61 million in 2011, 50,000 more than that in the previ-ous year. The Xiamen Statistics Bureau says it has been one of the fastest growing cities in China over the last 10 years, both economically and in population numbers. At Xiamen University this huge migratory melting pot is particularly apparent. There are nearly 40,000 students living on Campus, eating, studying, playing sport and meeting new people, new cultures from different regions. They were born in the 90’s, China’s new generation after the Cultural Revolution, and arrive at campus usually having migrated far from their hometowns. One student said, ‘I go home twice a year for winter and summer holidays, first I talk to my parents about school, then I eat my mother’s cooking!’ The other one said: ‘The women of my region are the most beautiful of China!’ During the five week workshop in Xiamen, we invented different kinds of activities to find out what Home means to them and to us. One student said; a week before Father’s day my father always waited for me at the door of the house when I came home from Xiamen. He didn’t say much and I didn’t tell him when I would be back home but he was always there waiting for me. Later my mother told me that he could hear the sounds of the train from Xiamen and then he stood at the door especially for me. It’s a simple story but even so it gives me such a homesick feeling.’ Where could be my home? These 48 participants from around China slowly start to reveal to us what their own story where Home is. In their 48 portraits they are with their wearable mobile protection creations, inspired by their favorite things.
