Permeable Sub-base MaterialPermeable Sub-base Material has a voided structure, as it doesn’tcontain very fine particles. Hence it collects and holds waterwithin its structure, before dispersing it into the soil or into adrainage system.

Permeable Chippings forBlock PavingPermeable Chippings have an angular shape and are essential forinstallations of permeable paving. Permeable Chippings are usedto fill in the large voids between permeable blocks to ensure astrong joint.Also, for Aura and Classico standard block paving, use PermeableChippings, then top up with jointing sand (this is not permeable).

Ensuring water drains into a rainwatergarden, soakaway or a purpose-designedpermeable sub-base are some of the ways youcan meet current legislation.

Using permeable paving, such as AlphaAntique Flow or Omega Flow, is a straight-forward and responsible alternative tostandard block or flag paving.

To understand your options, see page 72,‘Being Responsible with Water’. Some designswill require planning permission.

However, permeable paving isn’t just about theblock paving. the Sub-base structure andmaterials are also essential for it’s performance.

Stayputt JointingCompoundStayputt Narrow Joining Compound is an easy-to-use, self-stabilising material suitable for joints of between 2mm – 5mm,making it ideal for use with most types of block paving ondriveways, when laid on a sharp sand screed.

SUITABILITYProducts which are less than 50mmthick are not suitable to run cars on.Only products of 50mm or more aresuitable for driveway installation.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR CONCRETEPRODUCTSEfflorescence: Efflorescence is atemporary salt residue that can occur onall concrete products in their initial life.The salt masks the colour of the productand is often mistaken for fading. Thebest course of action is to leave thepaved area to weather over time andefflorescence will usually disappear.

Differential Curing: Dark patchesoccasionally appear on the surface ofgarden products. This is known asDifferential Curing and is caused byvarying moisture levels within the flagdrying at different rates. Likeefflorescence, given time and thenatural weathering process such patcheswill tone down and become less visible.

Porosity: Concrete continues to cure formany years after manufacture. Whilstthis happens, and usually only during itsinitial life, a level of porosity may existwhere some product retains watergiving a damp appearance. This willdisappear as the concrete continues toharden and the product dries out.

Aggregate contaminants: Very rarelyconcrete may be affected with IronPyrites and/or Lignite. These are boththe result of naturally occurringconstituents within the product rawmaterials which may result in localiseddiscolouration of the surface of anindividual unit. This phenomenon willnot normally affect the performanceof the product.

Sealants: Sealers can help protect andenhance your investment. Before youchoose to buy one, make sure you areaware of the following. Sealers may trappotential efflorescence and other formsof discolouration that can occur from

time to time, making them almostimpossible to remove. We recommendyou wait 12-18 months before sealing.This will allow any potentialdiscolouration to be exposed and enableyou to remove it. Before sealing, makesure that the paving is thoroughlycleaned and any joints are filled. Prior toapplying to the whole installation, test ina small inconspicuous area.

Surface marking: Some products withinthe range are deliberately distressed viaa tumbling process in order to give themtheir aged aesthetic. Tumbling can leavea dust on the surface of the productthat should significantly reduce with thenatural ageing process.

The colours in concrete paving comefrom pigmentation placed into theproduct during production. Productsmay have 2 or 3 different pigmentsadded to create the subtle and veryattractive colour tones. Overall thesevariations are more uniform.

Tumbling: Products that are tumbled,such as Alpha and Aura, have beendistressed with varying productiontechniques. The distressing process byits very nature creates a randomaesthetic. This variation is deliberate andgives the appeal of the product range.

Each manufacturing production run of aspecific product (or batch) will have itsown unique characteristics. Minimisingthe number of batches will help reduceproduct variation. Products should belaid from a number of packs at the sametime. In the case of paving three packsshould be mixed for single colours, fivein the case of multi-coloured product.Ideally, product should also be mixed bybeing taken from vertical stacks ratherthan in layers of the same pack.

Any garden products supplied may incurjoint widths of differing sizes dependingon the pattern they are installed in.We recommend they are dry laid tocheck the product fits the required areabefore they are actually bedded. This isalso important for circles, octagons andcorner kits.
