December Resident Spotlight: Delora & Scott Peterson
Scott & Delora Peterson both were raised in Minnesota. Scott grew up near St.Cloud and Delora grew up on a dairy farm near Harris, Minnesota. They both went to St.Cloud University where they first met.
After college, Scott moved to Columbia Heights, MN where he started teaching as an accounting teacher. He continued to teach all over the country at universities and junior colleges in partnership with McGraw Hill. He partnered with McGraw Hill where he helped write a book about accounting. Meanwhile, Delora was in Minneapolis after college working for the Girl Scouts.
Delora and Scott got married in 1959 and spent many years in New Brighton raising their three daughters, Amy, Beth, & Christine. As a family, they spent many years at the Cabin in Nevis, MN on 8th Crow Wing Lake. They spent lots of time there swimming and fishing. Today, all three daughters live in Minnesota and they have 5 grandchildren as well.
Scott spent many of his years biking, hunting, and fishing. On the other hand, Delora is an avid antique button collector and also spent many years sewing, quilting, and she enjoys playing piano and loves the game Bridge!
A fun fact about Delora is that she spent a few years dressing models for Dayton’s charity events. And Scott’s fun fact is that his favorite place he ever traveled to was London.
Be sure to stop and say hello to each of them when you see them coming down the hall with their sweet 5 month old dog, Hazel.

cheese 1 sleeve buttery round crackers
crushed (about 1 3/4 cups crushed) I used Ritz.
1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 2-quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Drain the pineapple very well and reserve 6 tablespoons of the juice for the recipe. In a large bowl, stir together the sugar, flour and 6 tablespoons of the juice. Add the pineapple and mix well. Pour it into the prepared dish. Sprinkle the cheese over the top. In a medium bowl, add the melted butter to the crushed cracker crumbs and stir to coat them in the butter. Sprinkle them evenly over the cheese. Storage in the Garage Storage in the garage needs to be limited to just a few small things,
no gas- or gas-powered equipment, and nothing around the A/C units. This can be a fire hazard, a safety issue, and can
cause mechanical failure and or break down. Also, we will be
washing the garage floor again this spring and all things that are
being stored will need to be removed to complete the
cleaning process.
Trash and Recycling
Trash & Recycling are located on all the floors in the trash
rooms. Please tie garbage up before throwing away.
Please DO NOT throw your plastic bags in the recycling! These cannot be recycled.
Thank you!
Friendly Reminders from the Maintenance Department

Nursing Corner with Janaye Holiday Stress & Depression
The holiday season for most people is a fun time of the year filled with parties, celebrations, and social gatherings with family and friends. For many people, it is a time filled with sadness, self-reflection, loneliness, and anxiety.
What causes holiday blues?
Sadness is a truly personal feeling. What makes one person feel sad may not affect another person. Typical sources of holiday sadness include:
• Stress • Fatigue • Unrealistic expectations • Over-commercialization • Financial stress • The inability to be with one's family
and friends
Balancing the demands of shopping, parties, family obligations, and house guests may contribute to feelings of being overwhelmed and increased tension. People who do not view themselves as depressed may develop stress responses, such as:
• Headaches • Excessive drinking • Over-eating • Insomnia
Others may experience post-holiday sadness after New Year's Day. This can result from built-up expectations and disappointments from the previous year, coupled with stress and fatigue.
19 tips for coping with holiday stress and depression:
1. Make realistic expectations for the holiday season.
2. Set realistic goals for yourself. 3. Pace yourself. Do not take on more
responsibilities than you can handle. 4. Make a list and prioritize the important
activities. This can help make holiday tasks more manageable.
5. Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. 6. Do not put all your energy into just one day
(i.e., Thanksgiving Day, New Year's Eve). The holiday cheer can be spread from one holiday event to the next.
7. Live and enjoy the present. 8. Look to the future with optimism. 9. Don't set yourself up for disappointment and
sadness by comparing today with the good old days of the past.
10. If you are lonely, try volunteering some time to help others.
11. Find holiday activities that are free, such as looking at holiday decorations, going window shopping without buying, and watching the winter weather, whether it's a snowflake or a raindrop.
12. Limit your drinking, since excessive drinking will only increase your feelings of depression.
13. Try something new. Celebrate the holidays in a new way.
14. Spend time with supportive and caring people. 15. Reach out and make new friends. 16. Make time to contact a long-lost friend or
relative and spread some holiday cheer. 17. Make time for yourself! 18. Let others share the responsibilities of holiday
tasks. 19. Keep track of your holiday spending.
Overspending can lead to depression when the bills arrive after the holidays are over. Extra bills with little budget to pay them can lead to further stress and depression.

The Pillars of White Bear Lake is excited to collaborate with Park Nicollet’s Struthers Parkinson’s Center (SPC). SPC is a phenomenal resource in addressing the unique and sometimes difficult impact that Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders have on residents and their families. We believe the collaboration with Park Nicollet’s Struthers Parkinson’s Center, and Fairview Health Services can significantly improve the independence and problem-solving skills of residents and caregivers alike.
