Perseverance.

A word not to be taken lightly.

A word that describes the class of this time, a group of people also not to be taken lightly.

Though the road was not easy and it was painstakingly riddled with trouble, you have

persevered and made it through.

Los Angeles Mission College was established in 1975 as the ninth college in

the Los Angeles Community College District and the 100th community

college in California. For its first 16 years, the College offered classes

in scattered storefronts and leased facilities throughout the city of San

Fernando and surrounding communities.

In 1991, the new permanent campus was completed on a 22-acre site in

Sylmar and the College experienced a surge in enrollments and a resulting

higher visibility in the community. In 2007, the College acquired 11

additional acres, which expanded its footprint to its existing size.

From humble storefront beginnings in 1975 to today’s modern campus,

the College has opened the doors to higher education for generations

of students. From the beginning, the College has sought to unleash the

potential of the community through innovative programs encouraging

academic and personal growth.

In its 46-year existence, more than 234,000 students have pursued their

education at the College. Los Angeles Mission College remains the

only institution of higher learning primarily serving the Northeast San

Fernando Valley.

Keynote Speaker – Monte E. Perez, Ph.D.

Dr. Monte E. Perez has been President

of Los Angeles Mission College since

May 2011. He serves on the national

Board of Governors for the Hispanic

Association of Colleges and Universities,

representing 450 two-year and four-

year colleges. He is on the Board of

Directors of the National Association of

Workforce Boards, which oversees the

implementation of federal employment

and training programs.

He has participated in numerous academic presentations, including his papers on the

integration of academic affairs and student services at Oxford University, revising

the California Master Plan in Higher Education at the University of Vienna, and a

presentation on Exemplary Enrollment and Retention Strategies in Community Colleges

at the Education Testing Service’s National Community College symposium.

He was recently appointed as a Trustee to the Los Angeles County Board of Education by

Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who represents the County’s third district. As a college student

at Cal State L.A. and member of the United Mexican American Students, he participated

in organizing, supporting, and making sure East L.A. high school students were safe and

their demands heard.

Dr. Perez graduated from James A. Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, obtained

his bachelor’s degree in Social Science Government at California State University,

Los Angeles, and his master’s and Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from

the University of Southern California.

David Jordan was so passionate about teaching and watching his students growth and successes. Through the years, he received many emails and texts from students even years after graduation, to let him know about their law school or work experiences. Some asked for guidance in taking the LSAT or to tell him they were getting married or had a baby. David’s wife,

Eve Helms continues to be filled with pride and admiration for the work David contributed to the next generation, as the founder of the LAMC Paralegal Program.
