The Act reg~tates conditions ofwork and term of employmentof workers engaged in shops andcommercial esta blishments andin those industrial establishmentswhich arc not covered under theFactories Act. 1948. It covershours of work, holidays, leave,

wages, employment of children andtheir working hours, closing andopening hours, health, safety,maternity benefits and welfare.

The Act regulates timely paymentof wages without any unauthoris-ed deductions. As a result ofan amendment in 1975, the cover- 'age of the Act has been extendedto persons getting wages uptoRs. 1,600 per mensem.

I.austrial (1) The Industrial Central Act The Act provides for settlement ofrelations Disputes Act, 1947 industrial disputes, layoff pay-

ments snd payments at the timeof retrenchment. As a resultof an amead-nent (in 1965) inSection 2-A of the Act, anyindividual e-n raise a disputerelating to his dismissal. Byanother amendment in 1976, theindustrial establishments employ-ing 100 or more workers are re-quired to obtain prior permissionof the government in mattersof layoff and retrenchment ofworkers and closure of theirunit(s).

(2) The Industrial Central Act The Act requires employersEmployment employing 50 01" more workers(Standing Orders) to make standing orders definingAct, 1946 terms of employment of workers

on specified matters and to getthem certified by the certifyingofficer.
