March Virtue of the Month –Forgiveness

When someone you care about hurts you, you can hold on to anger, resentment and thoughts of revenge — or embrace forgiveness and move forward. Forgiveness is letting go of grudges and bitterness. By embracing forgiveness, you can also embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy.

We can find forgiveness by:

Saying a prayer

Focusing on gratitude

Stay true to who you are

Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations

To support our faith development and Catholic Board Learning Cycle, we infuse our Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations in all aspects of Catholic Education from Kindergarten to Grade 12. As a school we work to support a deeper understanding of these expectations and of our witness to faith. To-gether, as a community we work to embed the seven expectations to support the Catholic Education of our students as they journey through our schools through to vocation.

A DISCERNING BELIEVER FORMED IN THE CATHOLIC FAITH COMMUNITY WHO: Illustrates a basic understanding of the saving story of our Christian faith. Participates in the sacramental life church and demonstrates an understanding of the centrality of the Eucharist to our Catholic story. Actively reflects on God's Word as communicated through the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Develops attitudes and values founded on Catholic social teaching and acts to promote social responsibility, human solidarity and the common good. Speaks the language of life…"recognizing that life is an unearned gift and that a person entrusted with life does not own it but that one is called to protect and cherish it." (Witnesses to Faith)

March Break

Please note that the March break will be from March 12-March 16, 2018 . There will be no school on these dates.

BAG2SCHOOL

St. Maurice will be beginning its Bag2School campaign on March 6th. Students are asked to bring in used clothing in boxes or bags by March 22, 2018. All donations will be sent oversees to support families in need. We thank you for you generosity.

Try It At Home

Learning to use standard units of time takes practice and experi-ence. When your child connects the passage of time to personal

events, he or she will begin to develop an understanding of meas-urement terms involving duration:

• Longer and shorter • Faster and slower • First and last •

Use cues to let your child know the passage of time (for exam-ple, “It took us only two minutes to tidy up your toys”). Tell your child the time in the context of daily activities (for exam-ple, “It will be 7 p.m. in ten minutes and time for your bath”).

With your child, use a clock to know how much time it takes to get to school, eat meals, get ready for bed or play a game.

• Involve your child in learning to organize personal and fami-ly events on a calendar. Have your child write on the calendar some favourite “away from home” activities (such as playing a sport, going to the library or visiting a friend) and what time the activity will take place (for example, soccer 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.)

Student Mental Health and Well-Being

During Lent we are encouraged to engage in almsgiving, fasting and prayer. Our fo-cus this month is on prayer and it’s many benefits.

God is a source of comfort, strength and love for us. Through prayer we enter into a deeper relationship with God and gain a sense of attachment to Him. Many studies have shown that individuals who pray to a loving and protective God with whom they have a meaningful relationship are less likely to experience anxiety and stress. Prayer offers emotional comfort and re-duces stress by:

Offering a sense of comfort and hope. When you’re faced with life challenges, prayer offers a sense of comfort. Knowing that God listens to your prayers and that you don’t have to bear your burden alone offers a sense of hope. When you feel hopeful you gain strength and are encouraged to carry on.

Creating a positive frame of mind. By giving thanks and expressing gratitude when praying it creates a positive frame of mind. When you purposefully engage in “thankful prayer” it reminds you of the many blessings you have, and as a result helps to decrease feelings of sad-ness.

Stress Relief. Researchers have found that when focusing on other people through prayer it contrib-utes to a “stress-buffering effect”. Reflecting on the welfare of others can reduce your own stress - it is in giving to others that we receive.

Increases feelings of unity and trust. Praying together with a friend, your class, or as a commu-nity is an experience that brings people closer together. Prayer can help build relationships and feel-ings of social connectedness.
