Elias Quartet

Scottish Fiddle Music Workshop

For over ten years Parbold Douglas Music has presented concerts for children each season. Over 200 local primary school children are given the experience of coming to a special place to listen to and watch the creation of live music played by international artists and professional musicians.

This year the concerts will be presented by Elias String Quartet who are internationally acclaimed as one of the leading and liveliest ensembles of their generation. The ensemble is keen to bring music to a wider audience, and enjoys working with children.

This workshop is co-ordinated in association with Folkus, The Folk Arts Network of the Northwest.

The internationally acclaimed Elias String Quartet enjoys playing Scottish Fiddle Music composed by various artists, including work by the brilliant Donald Grant, one of the Quartet’s violinists. He grew up immersed in traditional music, as his father was a Gaelic singer and teacher. He sang songs from when he could speak and loved attending courses at Sabhal Mor Ostaig and the National Mod and Feisan nan Gaidheal. Mostly he just loved playing with other people.

Saturday 21st October | 7.45 p.m. 12 ensemble, London’s un-conducted string orchestra

The 12 ensemble is a bold, versatile and virtuosic group of twelve of London’s finest and most exciting chamber musicians. Committed to performing without a conductor, they breathe new life into the concept of the chamber orchestra. The ensemble creates performances that are as intimate, dedicated and dynamic as that of a string quartet but with the magnificent sound afforded by twelve world-class string players.

Founded in 2012 by Artistic Directors Eloisa-Fleur Thom (Leader) and Max Ruisi (Principal Cello), the group’s youthful energy and passion for chamber music is at the heart of their music-making. The ensemble strives to bring exceptional music to diverse audiences, and is equally at home performing on a warehouse rooftop or an international concert hall.

Known for their intense and vibrant performances, the Elias Quartet has collaborated with some of the finest musicians and played in the world’s great venues.

“Remarkable throughout… bold, rich tone and expressive nuances contributing to an intense and deeply felt interpretation.” The Times

2015 saw them complete their ground-breaking Beethoven Project: performing and recording the complete string quartets of Beethoven, broadcast by BBC Radio 3. The Quartet has also recorded the cycle for the “Wigmore Hall Live” record label.

“The Intrada Brass Ensemble…is a high class mix of established and freelance professionals along with active amateurs and teachers. Their stylistic boundaries have been gradually expanded to include jazz, pop, original works for ten piece brass ensemble and arrangements of staple classics. The choice of music is eclectic, but all the more entertaining for it…ebullient spirit and stylistic perception.” World of Sound Recordings

Intrada Brass Ensemble is based in Preston, Lancashire. It is an eleven-piece formation with percussion and can play a wider variety of music in concert situations than is possible with more conventional and smaller ensembles.

‘A Christmas Reverie with Intrada Brass’ The ensemble will perform a classic programme of Christmas music including the Coventry Carol to ‘Jingle Bells’, ‘I saw three ships’ to ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’ and ‘Season’s Greetings’ with some audience participation.

“The swell of suspended harmonies was perfectly controlled, the chords perfectly struck and voiced, and Kim always kept the sense of restless searching at just the right level of intensity.” The Guardian

We are delighted to welcome Sunwook Kim back to Parbold. He won the Leeds International Piano Competition aged just 18, becoming the competition’s youngest winner for 40 years, as well as its first Asian winner.

Alessandro Taverna, piano

Italian pianist Alessandro Taverna trained at the Accademia Pianistica “Incontri col Maestro” in Imola. Hailed by the British music critics as the ‘natural successor to his great compatriot Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli’, Alessandro Taverna’s ‘music making stimulates the senses as does a visit to his native Venice’, and gives ‘rise to a feeling of wonderment’. When he reached the final and performed Chopin’s First Piano Concerto at 2009 Leeds International Piano Competition, ‘the world was suddenly suffused with grave beauty: flawless minutes of poetry’. The Independent.

“A superb recital of musical-technical skills demonstrated the sheer musicality and tonal perfection of this rare artist at his very best.” Daily Vision

Alessandro Taverna has shown a most remarkable, constant development that makes him one of the most interesting pianists of his generation.

“As soon as I heard Bob Fox sing I realised that he must have one of the best voices in England. I have always regarded him as an artiste of great integrity and ability.” Ralph McTell

Douglas Music is delighted to welcome Bob Fox following his three year role as Songman in the West End production and UK/Ireland Tour of WARHORSE. This concert is coordinated in association with Claire Griffin, Headteacher, Our Lady and All Saints Catholic Primary School and Anne Grew, Administrator for Parbold Douglas Music Lancashire.

This children’s concert is linked with the ‘War Horse’ themed concert on Saturday 10th March. 2018 is an appropriate time to recall the songs that the soldiers in the trenches created or adapted from the popular songs of the times. Folk singers Derek Gifford and Mark Dowding will introduce, perform and invite audience participation in a musical experience based on these songs.

Derek Gifford is well known in the North-West folk scene where his relaxed approach and contagious enthusiasm have earned him a fine reputation as a singer of quality. Mark Dowding began performing folk songs at school and has been involved in running folk clubs, researching and recording Lancashire folk music, and appearing as a guest artist on radio, TV and at musical events.

Parbold Douglas Music has a tradition of presenting Pied Piper concerts by international artists and professional musicians for over 200 local primary school children each season.

Cédric studied at the Paris Conservatoire and, aged just 17, was awarded the Premier Prix in 1992 and first prize at the prestigious Long-Thibaud Competition in Paris in 1998. His career spans five continents performing in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls.

Alina has established a reputation as one of the most accomplished violinists of the younger generation. She was a member of the BBC New Generation Artists Scheme 2005-7 and her awards include the Classical BRIT Young Performers of the Year Award in 2009. After her five appearances at the BBC Proms 2015, The Guardian commented: “The immediacy and honesty of Ibragimova’s playing has the curious ability to collapse any sense of distance between performer and

listener”. She was made an MBE in the 2016 New Year Honours List.

The second half of the concert is devoted to a North West Musicians’ Showcase. David Daniels will perform works by Chopin and others from the nineteenth century romantic repertoire.

Audiences may think they know David, but it is unlikely they will appreciate that he leads a dual professional life: one as a concert pianist playing solo recitals and concertos with the North West’s semi-professional orchestras and the other as a technician preparing concert pianos for other professional musicians. The piano and its repertoire is a life-long study for David that has taken him from home in Rochdale to Chetham’s School of Music, Newark Technology College and to work alongside Steinway technicians

Young Musicians’ Showcase Concert

Young performers living in Lancashire and across the North West Region, from different backgrounds and aged approximately 13 to 21 years, will be invited to apply to appear in this concert. Martin Roscoe, piano

With an extraordinary career spanning over four decades, Martin Roscoe, from the Lake District, is one of the UK’s best loved pianists. Renowned for his versatility at the keyboard, Martin is equally at home in concerto, recital and chamber performances. With a repertoire of over 100 concertos performed or recorded, Martin works regularly with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, such as the BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras. Teaching has always been an important part of Martin’s life and the development of young talent helps him to constantly re-examine and re-evaluate his own playing. He is currently a Professor of Piano at the Guildhall School of Music in London and has just been awarded his Fellowship there.
