Northern Virginia District Administrator Virginia Department of Transportation 4975 Alliance Drive Fairfax, VA 22030 Re: 44 th District Paving Requests Dear Ms. Cuervo: As part of my regular constituent outreach program, I asked all respondents of my online constituent survey to submit their opinion about what roads in the 44 th District were most in need of maintenance. I have attached a list of all of the requests I received. I have noted the following: (1) By far and away, Fort Hunt Road is the most common request. (2) Old Mill Road comes up quite a bit. (3) The condition of U.S. 1 is a frequent complaint. (4) Sherwood Hall Lane is mentioned often, but I know that is already scheduled for this year. (5) I have a small number of constituents relative to the rest of my district who live along Telegraph Road who have indicated that it is in significant need of paving between Hayfield and I 495. Aside from Sherwood Hall Lane which is scheduled for this year, please let me know if there if it is possible to elevate these roadways on the Northern Virginia Transportation District paving list. These roads are some of the highest volume secondary roads in the system and are used by virtually everyone who lives in the 44 th District. Thank you for considering my constituents’ requests. Virginia's transportation funding shortfall reached epidemic proportions. Last year, the legislature adopted measure to fund our maintenance shortfall and smaller construction projects, but there is a massive maintenance backlog including many roads here in the 44th District. What roads in our community are most in need of resurfacing? Please be

specific as to longer roads.

Richard Burkard 22060 Hwy 1 north of woodlawn

Mary Jane Reyes 22079 Fix edges of Gunston Road in Lorton - not in your district.

David Honick 22121 Rt 1.

Michael Bennett 22303 I am sure that VDOT can prioritize

Laura LaVertu 22303 I know West Braddock Road and Fort Hunt Road could probably stand to be resurfaced.

John Tolleris 22303 King Highway

☺Alan J. Warshawer 22306"Most in need"? How would I know, I have not traveled on all the roads in the district. That is why we have a transportation Dept - to deermne the requirements.

Martin Tillett 22306

All roads in the Spring Bank Community. They are presently crumbling and patched all over. More so now that ever since new water pipes are being installed.Oak Drive, Dawn Drive, Phillips Drive, Fairview Drive, Beddoo Street, Fleming Street, Hillside Lane

JoAnn Molnar 22306 Belle View Blvd. has tons of pot holes between Fort Hunt Road to the GW Parkway.

Brad Smith 22306 Courtland Rd

Pam Williams 22306

Despite a relatively recent fix to Ft Hunt Road, it is yet again becoming a pothole filled route...at least from Belle View Road up to Hollin Hall. The entire neighborhood of Hollin Hills with one or two exceptions hasn't seen street repairs in years. Also the dog leg portion of Huntington between Rt. 1 and Ft. Hunt Road was partially paved but not entirely and now the unimproved portion is getting bad.

Daniel Weinberg 22306 Fort Hunt Road

M Bashore 22306

Fort Hunt Road has deteriorated recently, lots of new potholes. In addition to resurfacing, too many roads are lacking shoulders, street lights, sidewalks and curbs, are not pedestrian-friendly. Keep in mind, for people to use public transpotation such as buses, they have to walk there first and last.

Linda Lloyd 22306 Ft Hunt and Sherwood Hall Lane

James Williams 22306Ft. Hunt between Sherwood Hall and Bellview Blvd. Work needs to be done at night, not during the day.

Larry Huffman 22306 Ft. Hunt from Richmond Highway to at least just past Hollin Hall Shopping Center.

Pamela Crawford 22306Ft. Hunt Road between Rt. 1 and Hollin Hall; The roads near Mt Vernon Hospital; Collingwood Road, Parker's Lane, Sherwood Hall Lane.

Barbara Katz 22306I do not know, but I am concerned about accidents at the intersection of Fort Hunt and Paul Spring Roads and would like to see a dedicated, north-bound, left-turn lane on Fort Hunt Road.

Thomas Tolley 22306 I would widen Rt 1 first, then resurface Huntington lane

Allison Elder 22306 I'm not sure--mine are all decent.

John Tanner 22306Most of the roads needing resurfacing that deal with are on private property or Military bases, so I have no opinion.

Stephen Kitterman 22306

My biggest complaint is the recessed manhole covers in Rt 1 so I will say Rt 1. Transportation engineer's do not condone or approve resurfacing a road without resetting the manhole covers. There are hundreds in a few short miles that people, me included, are constantly dodging. It needs to be fixed.

Charlotte Brown and Bonnie Wilkins

22306

Northern Va needs more $s from Richmond for road maintenance. The fact Lee District had to fund the Kings Hwy/Telegraph road effort is simply a shame. The Groveton neighborhood roads: Groveton Street, Clayborne Avenue, Grove Rd and Spring Drive are in need of resurfacing and improvement.

LF Helm 22306numerous as you know, BUT, YOU should also ask whether or not apparent frequent road deterioration is or is not related to inadequate standards and/or shoddy previous road contractor or public road repair.

Keren Chales Dongo 22306 Route 1

Elmer Guerrero 22306 Route 1, Belleview Ave, E. Side Dr

Page 4: 44th District VDOT Paving Requests

James Owens 22306Rt 1 need work, of course, but I cannot think of a secondary road (other than Kings Highway) that needs resurfacing in this district.

Marcus H England 22306 Rt One

William Teng 22306 Rt. 1 through Hybla Valley

Vernon Lee Jr 22306 Service roads.

Juan C Hernandez 22306 South Kings Highway from The Parkway to Huntington

Jeremey Alcorn 22306 Telegraph and South Kings Highway.

Beth Richelieu 22306Telegraph Road (between South Kings Highway and the Fairfax County Parkway; South Kings Highway (entire length).

Alan Waitt 22306 the roads I use are fine

Richard M Sparks 22306 The roads that I use regularly are fortunately holding up well.

Laurie Whitehead 22306 They seem fine to me.

Alice Kitterman 22306US Route 1 between Ft Belvoir (Groveton/Hybla Valley) to Old Town Alexandria has many potholes.

Tracey Serle 22306

We need to do better quality work on the roads we do resurface. It has been only a few years since Fort Hunt Road underwent resurfacing along most of its length and it is pitted with potholes again. I must have hit every one driving home after dark last Sunday night. I didn't realize that there were so many and I have been looking for them now while driving around in the day light. There are a LOT. There shouldn't be this many already so perhaps we'd better do a higher quality job on resurfacing so that we aren't socked with repeated need to make the same repairs every few years.

Edna Rogers 22307although the residential roads are in bad condition, i believe the major roads need to be widened. route 1, the GW parkway, telegraph road, are major public access and cause much angst to the local residents.

Terra 22307Fort Hunt between Rt 1 and Morningside has developed quite a few potholes this winter, and they are getting bigger. Otherwise I don't really see any serious problems on the roads I drive.

Ron McCallum 22307 Ft. Hunt Rd.

Page 5: 44th District VDOT Paving Requests

JOHN WITTMANN 22307Have not lived here long enough to note specific roads. Extensive repair is necessary throughout the area.

Katharine Ling 22307 I think the surface is mostly fine.

Thomas Linney 22307Maintain Fort Hunt Road. Be aware that it is used as an alternative to Route 1 during commute hours.

Mark Becker 22307Paul Spring RoadCoventry Road

Nina Kogan 22307

Quander Road (between Route 1 and Beacon Hill Road)Paul Spring RoadFort Hunt (between Belleview and Paul Spring)Rippon Road

Caroline Smith 22307 Roads appear in much better shape than when I lived in Baltimore, so I have no complaints!

Michael Dunkley 22307 Route 1, from the beltway to Woodbridge

Matthew Duchesne 22307Significant secondary feeder roads, such as Quander and Fairhaven, which carry a lot of local traffic to the Huntington Metro Station, as well as parts of Fort Hunt and parts of Sherwood Hall Lane.

Peter Kinzler 22307Thanks to VDOT's inexperienced snow crew's work three years ago, Stafford Rd. now resembles a third world road.

Jim Carmalt 22308Again, most of my driving is done on Fort Hunt Road and it is in abysmal condition right now. Certainly maintaining our current infrastructure (particularly large feeder roads like Fort Hunt Rd.) would be a priority.

Martin Skopp 22308 Belle View Blvd since it has been torn apart over the last few years by construction.

Myriam Urrutia Eder 22308Can't think of any but will have this question in mind as I move around the district and will report to your office if I find some.

Ryan Colvert 22308Collingwood from Riverside to Ft Hunt. Tree roots and wash outs develop considerable pot holes every few months. Elkin near Wittington is a bit tough. The other major roads I travel seem in decent shape.

David Hastie 22308 Cross county access from rt. 1 is most important.

Neil Worden 22308 Fort Hunt & Route 1

Tonda Phalen 22308

Fort Hunt and Collingwood Roads could both use bicycle lanes, which could be easily accomplished by doing away with open ditches in favor of underground rainwater management with bike trails on top. In addition to resurfacing Collingwood Rd needs to have blind spots removed by regrading to flatten the road more between Fort Hunt and Parker's Lane.

Page 6: 44th District VDOT Paving Requests

Pilkenton 22308 Fort Hunt Rd approx. between Paul Spring Pkwy and Shenandoah Rd.

Pilkenton 22308 Fort Hunt Rd between Admiral Dr. and Shenandoah Rd.

Bill Moulds 22308 Fort Hunt Rd is getting very bad around the Hollin Hall area and south.

PATRICIA ADAMS 22308Fort Hunt rd is horrible---patches around Sherwood hall, Paul Spring, Heritage Baptist church bend in rd.

Nancy Harper 22308Fort Hunt Rd starting just south of Sherwood Hall Lane. It is already heavily patched and now has many new potholes.

Robin 22308 Fort Hunt Road

Doug Woodward 22308 Fort Hunt Road

Martijn Rasser 22308

Fort Hunt Road between Morningside and Vernon View is an absolute disaster. Many third world countries have nicer roads. Even the stretch of Fort Hunt that was most recently repaved is already showing significant wear and tear leading me to question the quality of the work done. There should be sidewalks along the whole stretch of the road and paved surfaces at every bus stop.

John Cassidy 22308 Fort Hunt Road between Vernon View and Collingwood

Anita Feidler 22308 Fort Hunt Road between Wellington and Vernon View.

Julie Hickman Thompson 22308Fort Hunt Road From Hollin Hall to and including Vernon View Drive, which takes on GW Parkway entry and exit traffic The low area from Elkin past the lodge is full of potholes. It would be ideal if Fort Hunt Road could have an extra lane, too.

Catherine 22308

Fort Hunt Road from Sherwood Hall Lane south to the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

While Fairfax Rd., Washington Rd, Yorktown Dr. and Lafayette Dr. need resurfacing, the increased construction trucks due to the buy one lot and build 2 houses fire sale at the expense of those living on these streets does not make those streets a good resurfacing project as the heavy construction trucks would ruin the resurfacing job.

David Paradise 22308 Fort hunt road from Sherwood Hall lane to the Parway

Page 7: 44th District VDOT Paving Requests

Celia boertlein 22308Fort hunt road has been and continues to be a major connector route in dire need of improvements, including resurfacing, sidewalks, etc.

Kae Wells 22308 Fort Hunt Road has many potholes and cracks that threaten larger problems in the future.

Evan Morris 22308 Fort Hunt Road has some big potholes.

Dana Grimm 22308Fort hunt road is again in need of repair. I have to wonder if subpar surfacing material etc is being used because of costs and this then necessitates continuous resurfacing,

Bob Crow 22308 Fort Hunt road is in terrible condition, as are Riverside and Collingwood.

Claire Prechtel-Kluskens 22308 Fort Hunt Road is just terrible - all the parts not paved last year [?]

Scott Chamberlain 22308Fort Hunt road is pretty bad for almost the whole length. Camden St. near Stratford lane is also pretty bad.

Regina Starrett 22308 Fort Hunt road- plus missing sidewalks.

Ken Denham 22308 Fort Hunt Road...lots of pot holes.

rochelle gray 22308 FRONT HUNT ROAD!!!!!!!!!

Alan oliver 22308 Ft Hunt

Ed OConnor 22308 Ft Hunt Rd

John Fagan 22308Ft Hunt Road is in decent shape now, but requires constant attention. Can't think of any other stretches of road that are too bad.

Audrey Schoeneweis 22308 Ft Hunt Road!

Jeffrey P John 22308 Ft. Hunt

Jeff Loughridge 22308 Ft. Hunt Rd.

Page 8: 44th District VDOT Paving Requests

Helen Haltzel 22308 Ft. Hunt Road

David Voorhees 22308

Ft. Hunt Road needs to have a storm sewer installed instead of ditches and then widened from Rt. 1 to Collingwood and repaved its entire length. Washington Road, Fairfax Road, Wellington Road , Lafayette and Yorktown have been destroyed by Gerry Hyland's infill project. So they should all be repaved.

Ragina M Chikar 22308 Ft. Hunt Road, Route 1, Quander Road

Al Johnson 22308I dont know where to start. the grass literally grows thru the pavement on my street, but I'm sure that happens all over norther VA

patrick 22308

I just built a brand new home on Little Hunting Creek Dr 22309, and I pay $8k let year in property tax. A larger new hom went up near mine...but the streets in this subdivision called Sunny View are atrocious. I would very much like to know who I can talk to to get the road re-paved. My cell is

Lori Dan ierace 22308 Jackson Road

Cynthia Simpson 22308None come to mind - perhaps sections of Fort Hunt Road near Paul Springs or Collingwood Road between Fort Hunt Road and Riverside, although the potholes in those locations have been fixed.

William White 22308Open a map, close your eyes, put your finger down on it, open your eyes and there you go. Roads are getting so bad it's embarrassing.

Erin Wirth 22308 Rt 1, mulligan new rd, morning side lane

Christina Swartz 22308Somehow, again, Fort Hunt rd. (between Collingwood Rd. and say Vernon view) is in need of resurfacing. Please don't use that gravel fill method! It's a patch at best, and at worst is an absolute nightmare for cyclists, because it has the texture of sand initially.

Kathleen Thompson 22308

The area of Fort Hunt Road, particularly between the GW Parkway and Sherwood Hall is pretty rough. Collingwood Road is quite unsafe and it seems more and more pedestrians use Collingwood Rd and there is just no shoulder at all and with the hills it's very easy to come right up on a pedestrian when you're driving.

Kyle Burke 22308 The entire length of Fort Hunt road South of Bellview.

Robert Surovell 22308 The only one I am intimate with is Ft. Hunt Rd. which could use a resurfacing.

Shahad Choudhury 22308 The southern end of Ft. Hunt rd, around the Hollin Hall Shopping center

Christian Tamotsu Fjeld 22308There are many roads that need maintenance and I fully support increasing the gasoline tax and indexing it to inflation in order to pay for such maintenance.

Page 9: 44th District VDOT Paving Requests

Dave 22308There are storm drains, curbs and sidewalks on my street (Bainbridge Rd) are falling apart. Water runs down the street all year long and freezes well into the road in winter. It's a shame.

Scott Savage 22309 235 between Mt Vernon and Route 1

Barbara Mulvaney 22309Can't think of any road that is worse than others in the area - I would rather see the money spent on putting sidewalks on Rt1 and feeder roads but know it won't happen.

John Dinan 22309 Driving on these roads makes the answer obvious.

Wayne 22309

Everyone pays some tax for the highways, but then tax each vehicle using modern electrical equipment and bill the charge card, based of use. If you use the road, then pay for it! In this way the companies would move to where the people live or the people would move near the companies. You can NOT build the roads, everyone will keep on moving farther out. And then complain when the new road gets full when it is no longer the fast highway!

James Byrne 22309 Fort Hunt Road to Route 1.

Keith Kerr 22309Fort Hunt. Old Mill.

We need sidewalks and paths on those routes so there is hope for other than car transportation.

Jon Ustun 22309 Ft Hunt Rd

Andrew Turner 22309Ft Hunt road from Vernon View northward. Old Mill Road (not just patches)

Randy Lucas 22309 Ft. Hunt Road, Sulgrave Drive

Cynthia Peverall 22309 I can't think of any that need resurfacing.

Albert Hall 22309 I do not know!

Nancy McDougall 22309 I mostly travel on Route 1 and have little knowledge on on this topic.

Janet McMillan 22309

I'm not sure if this is what you are asking, but Fairfax County Parkway North at the intersection with Loisdale desperately needs a right-turn lane. Traffic backs up in the right lane from Loisdale to the interchage with Telegraph Road because the right lane of Fairfax County Parkway north is both the right turn lane to get on to Loisdale and the exit to 95 North.

fred d kessel 22309 many

Tess Ailshire 22309

Maryland St has been resurfaced twice, maybe three times, in the 10 years I've lived here. WHY?

Very few need re-surfacing, in my experience. Many could benefit from well-done patches (which is not "dump a bunch of asphalt in the hole".

Hank 22309 None, slows traffic. But if u insist old mill rd.

Frank Aschmann 22309 Old Mill Road

William Muster 22309Old Mill RoadFix the pot holes.

Dave oemig 22309Other than the occasional pothole, I haven't experienced too many problems. However, can't really tell until all the plowing is done.

Wanda Fitzgerald 22309 Parts of Battersea Lane. My street has many cracks but no holes YET.

Peter Buck 22309 Parts of US1. No opinion on any others.

Barbara Breland 22309 Route 1

Vannessa McCormick 22309 Route 1 from Mowhawk Lane up until Beacon Mall. Lots of potholes!

Chris Marbaker 22309

Route 1 needs to be resurfaced. There looks to be like a resurface of one side of the outside lanes closer to Ft. Belvoir, not sure who decided on that. But that can be a hazard.

On a separate note, our street needs speed control devices installed. We have drivers that miss the stop sign and they drive up to speeds of 50 mph.

Grace Schaefermeier 22309 Rte 1 though Ft Belvoir.

William Scott Chilton 22309 Sherwood Hall Lane between Richmond Highway and Collingwood.

Stephen Gravini 22309 Sherwood Hall Lane near the hospital and fire/police station.

Mary Johnson 22309 Sherwood Hall Lane, please!

Keith Maly 22309 the roads i drive on seem to be okay

Page 11: 44th District VDOT Paving Requests

James W. Russell 22309 The roads I travel seem fine to me. I have no specific requests at this time.

Deborah Hawthorne 22309 The roads that are most traveled.

Lauren Preston 22309

The section of Route 1 that seems plagued by water main breaks - near the top of the hill where the mall where Giant is needs to be smoothed out. Also, the intersection where the new Walmart was put in near Huntington is terrible - there are too many intersecting roads and turns that the light timing cannot handle it. That area needs to be re-engineered.

E. H. Harper 22309There are some places along Route 1 that need repair, but I travel mostly the major roads that have been repaired and are in fairly good condition.

Burl and Linda Self 22309This shortfall is inexcusable. I primarily drive Highway One and less frequently Old Mount Vernon Highway. Certainly Highway One must be kept us as best we can while making the expansions. I don't have as much input on this question.

Frank Cihak 22309 VA 235 West

Preston Oglesby 22309 vDOT seems to doing all it came. Hopefully the governor will increase road spending for north VA.

Preston Oglesby 22309 vDOT seems to doing all it came. Hopefully the governor will increase road spending for north VA.

Eileen Pribble 22315 I don't drive much. Unaware of problem areas.

Lisa Hawksworth 22315 Telegraph road

Lon 22315 Telegraph road between Leaf and Van Dorn.

John Rasmussen 22315 Telegraph road from Beulah to I-495. Kings Hwy from Telegraph to Rte 1.

Tom Garnett 22315There are pot holes surrounding Hayfield and we just drive carefully to avoid damage to our vehicles. I accept the fact that I can't oppose new road repair taxes and expect top notch road surfaces. Life goes on with a few extra bump and the worst pot holes will eventually get fixed.

Patricia A. Freeman 223009-1703

Route 1 definitely is in need of repaving as are many of the roads which intersect Route 1 at traffic lights. I live on Highland Lane and it is in deplorable condition when you consider there is an elementary school and a church on this road. Highland Lane is also used as a cut through to Route 1 since the closure of Woodlawn Road when 9/11 occurred.

Franklin S. Moore 22306-2252 Route 1

Page 12: 44th District VDOT Paving Requests

Jeffrey Carver 22306-2402 Fort Hunt Road is so heavily used that it's almost always in need of repair.

Bubernak, Evelyne 22306-2419 Fort Hunt Rd, Rebecca Rd

John Cross 22306-2525

Widen Terminal Road along I-95 to two lanes.(see Mapquest http://mapq.st/1b0etyW)

Widen Telegraph Road all the way from I-95 to the Fort Belvoir Telegraph Gate at Beulah Rd.

Wide Kings Highway all the way from the Huntington Metro to Telegraph Road.

Archer A. (Tony) Jordan 22307-1953More than just resurfacing Ft. Hunt Road needs an additional lane at the entrance to Hollin Hills at Paul Spring Rd.

Nick Andrus 22308-2007 Parts of Ft. Hunt, Collingwood, and Pole Roads

Francis A. Poulin 22308-2548 Fort Hunt Road.

Thomas E. Fahy 22309-2175 The roads I travel are generally in good repair.
