The second hal o 2013 is looking avorable or

an economic upturn, assuming Congress and the

President dont step o the scal cli. That was

the message delivered to the December Economic

Club luncheon by Mitch Stapley, chie xed

income ocer or Fith Third Asset Management.

We are really seeing signs o improvement, said

Stapley. 2013 without the scal cli should be

better in the second hal o the year.

Stapley said that in talking with business people

around the country there is strong sentiment that

the economy is looking better, but that positive

eeling has been clouded by uncertainty in recent

months because o the scal cli and approaching

    healthcare changes in 2014.

One o the most important things we can do is

to give people some clarity, said Stapley. They

want to know, what are my taxes going to be?

Stapley told the Economic Club audience there

are many positive indicators that point to a

strong second hal o 2013, especially the uptick

in the housing market coupled with low interest

rates, a growing export market and an uptick in

    manuacturing and auto sales.

We are seeing more optimistic signs than we

Ia SaisUn Consultants Delivering ValueIt doesnt take long to realize that Integrated Strategies is not your typical consulting

rm. In large part thats due to the act that the companys co-ounder and CEO,

Steve Trecha, is not your typical consultant. In act, Trecha and his team are

reluctant to even use the term consultants.

Whatever one chooses to call Integrated Strategies and its team members, there

is no denying what the company has become since Trecha and an MSU Proessor

started the company in the basement o Trechas home in the late 1980s highly

successul. Integrated Strategies is widely recognized or

its work in helping more than 75 companies world-wide

achieve hundreds o millions o dollars in cost reductions

and protability enhancements. They do this while

building employee job enrichment and transorming

    business cultures and operations.

Integrated Strategies approach to helping clients is

noteworthy in a number o ways. Unlike many consulting

companies, the rm does not ocus on where to cut

jobs, but rather emphasizes achieving double-digit value

    through price/cost reductions, revenue enhancements,

business eciencies, asset utilization, and employee

job enrichment. Trecha points out that the Integrated

    Strategies approach is unique.

We are probably the only consulting rm that has never

recommended a headcount reduction, said Trecha.

We have never reorganized a company and have never

recommended a new computer system. These are the

    simple consulting solutions.

The oundation or the Integrated Strategies approach was built during the early

years o Trechas career. He earned a bachelors degree in Engineering Arts and an

MBA in Materials and Logistics Management at Michigan State University. He

worked his way through school as an automotive assembler at Flints GM TruckAssembly and later as a sub-contract quality inspector.

It was during his undergrad years that Trecha began to shape his non-traditional

problem solving approach that emphasized working collaboratively to empower

people and create more value. Trecha discovered the

people on the shop foor had great improvement ideas,

but were rustrated because they were not being heard

and elt held back by management

Most companies operate under the premise that the

person with the most stripes has the best answer; its amisnomer, said Trecha. Its about getting alignment

and engaging cross-unctionally, including the boots on

the ground while working collaboratively. The stripes

are let at the door, no one cares who gets the credit and

the expectation or creating double-digit value becomes

    a reality.

Trecha went on to have a successul industry stint and

then worked or a major consulting rm. He came

to realize that traditional consulting was not his orte

right about the same time he and his wie Ellen

started a amily. He needed more work-amily balance

in his lie. Thats when Integrated Strategies became

    a reality.Steve Trecha, CEO,Integrated Strategies

From the humble roots o the Trecha amily basement to the current headquarters at

a ormer Sports Il lustrated racquetball club in Okemos, the company continues its

hands-on, roll up our sleeves approach to helping its clients.

Typical o the non-traditional approach is the unconventional manner in which

the team starts each workday. Team members gather at 8:30 a.m. in what is

aectionately called The Huddle Room. Sta huddles together or ten minutes

on a single topic. Topics include such areas as motivational topics, helpul hints, and

improvement opportunities. Discussion is acilitated by a dierent team member

    each day.

When we started the Huddles thirteen years ago, some elt it was a dumb idea,

said Trecha. Ater three months, the team insisted that we make it permanent. The

huddle drives esprit de corps, builds critical thinking and communications skills and

is actually a un time or our team to be together. We have a treasure trove o huddle

    learnings in our knowledge library.

Clients in multiple industries agree that the Integrated Strategies approach works.

Consider some o the success stories:

Within36months,AmwayCorporationachievedover$100millioninvalue while transorming its global supply chain and sourcing operations.

Today, they operate as best in class; and

    RSI-BurgerKingCorporationdesignedandimplementedaNorth

American distribution strategy, encompassing over 10,000 stores and 1,300

ranchises, which captured over $50 million in value within 12 months.

They are now viewed as a best in class supply chain operation in the Quick

    Service Industry.

Most recently, Integrated Strategies helped the Michigan Department o

Corrections (MDOC) successully undergo a supply chain transormation. Within

nine months, the MDOC improved its prisoner ood service; developing a healthy, whole oods approach while meeting 100% o the dietary requirements and reducing

costs over 25%. Integrated Strategies saved the State tens o millions o dollars and

they are not done yet. The company also helped Corrections improve its electronic

monitoring, sta training, and its prisoner transport system.

These are all examples o complex businesses requiring a transormational

approach, said Trecha. The client teams, supported by strong leadership alignment,

are the heart and soul o the project and deserve all the credit.

Trecha insists on a corporate structure that emphasizes his team members and he

proudly shares with them the well-deserved recognition the rm has received. In2011, Integrated Strategies was recognized by the Lansing Regional Chamber o

Commerce with the Outstanding Small Business Award. The company holds the State

o Michigans Quality Leadership award and was recently tapped as a 21st Century

Visionary by the editors o Purchasing Magazine.

Trecha and his team are also proud o the work they do within the community. They

    proudly support the Volunteers o America to eliminate homelessness or veterans;

St. Johns Student Parish; St Vincent DePauls ood drives; The Marine Corps

Toys-For-Toys; in addition to Red Cross blood donations, local youth groups and

schools in leadership. Their philosophy towards community services is, not

surprisingly, quite similar to its approach to serving its c lients:

I you can align and enable people, they can do incredible stu, said Trecha. Ater

all that is success, and success is the only option!

Six Aa muiipaliis Sk Sa ga o Ai irioal Fi Si collaboaio eosSix area municipalities that have been collaborating

on a regional strategy to share re services have led

an application with the State Treasury Department

or unds to assist in implementing the upcoming

    phases o the process.

Fire departments rom the cities o Lansing and EastLansing and the townships o Meridian, Lansing,

Delta and Delhi are seeking a grant rom what is

known as the Economic Vitality Incentive Program

(EVIP). The purpose o this program is to provide

incentive-based grants to cities, villages, townships,

and counties that elect to combine government

operations. The grants are to oset the costs

associated with mergers, inter-local agreements, and

cooperative eorts or approved projects that occur

on or ater October 1, 2011.

This is a necessary rst step in the process to help

our re departments make a sensible transition

towards regional delivery o re services, said

Randall G. Taliarro, Lansing and East Lansing Fire

Chie. There are many complex issues that have to

be resolved including developing consistent policies

and procedures or all six jurisdictions. It will take

some time, but it is important that we negotiate

those issues in a way that creates a win-win or all

    parties involved.

We know that regional re services will look

dierent ten years rom now, said John Elsinga,

Delhi Township Manager. The EVIP grant wil l

assist us in making sure we navigate all o the

complex issues in ways that will allow us to build a

regional re service that will be among the very best

    in Michigan.

We are all committed to developing a program

or shared re services that will enhance eciency,

service delivery and eectively manage costs, saidLansing Township Superv isor Kathy Rodgers. We

also recognize that we must work towards those goals

while keeping public saety as our rst prior ity.

The six municipalities seeking the EVIP grant

recently participated in a Shared Public Services

Study conducted by Plante Moran. The study, which

was unded by the six municipalities, the Michigan

Municipal League Foundation, the Lansing Regional

Chamber o Commerce (LRCC) and the Lansing

Economic Area Partnership (LEAP, Inc.), proposed acareul, phased approach to service sharing, building

    upon existing cooperative initiatives.

LRCC has been pleased to take a leadership role to

promoting regionalism. In 2011, LRCC combined

with Michigan State University President Lou

Anna Simon and local business leaders to establish

a working group that was tasked with developing a

vision or more regional approaches with the local

governmental structure. The Shared Public Services

Study was an outgrowth o that groups eorts.

We are encouraged by the progress the six

municipalities are making in advancing some o the

recommendations in the Plante Moran study, said

LRCC President and CEO Tim Daman. These

are challenging issues that will take some time to

address, but everyone is approaching this with a

spirit o doing what is in the best interests o all the

    citizens in the region.

Local elections, led by the race or Mayor

o Lansing and our seats on the Lansing

City Council, will highlight the agenda

    or the Lansing Regional Chamber

    Political Action Committee (LRC-PAC)

in 2013. The LRC-PAC is expected to be

actively involved in endorsing and providing nancial support in several key races.

The Lansing City Council is the governing body o the largest municipality in the

region. The eectiveness o this body and the economic health o the city impacts

the entire region, said Tonia Olson, director o governmental and community

relations or Granger and 2013 LRC-PAC chair. The Lansing Regional Chamber

o Commerce and the LRC-PAC are interested in being part o the solution or the

challenges acing our capital city. As we head into the 2013 election, we have already

begun our process ocusing on candidates that share this vision.

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is expected to seek a third our-year term in 2013.

Lansing City Council At-Large seats held by Brian Jeries and Kathie Dunbar

will be on the ballot, as will the Second Ward seat held by Tina Houghton and

the Fourth Ward seat held by Jessica Yorko. In recent years, the Lansing City

Council has suered rom eorts by some council members to block important

development projects in the city. City Council deliberations have oten been labeled

as dysunctional by many observers rustrated by the nature o discussions that

oten occur on the 10th foor o Lansing City Hall.

In a 2011 survey conducted by Marketing Resource Group, Lansing voters gave

the City Council a D+ when asked to grade the Council on issues the voters

    considered important.

Clearly there are some members o the Lansing City Council that have been out-

o-step with the will o the voters, said Kristin Beltzer, LRCC senior vice president

or government relations and public aairs. We must have a Lansing Mayor and

City Council that will work together to implement pro-business policies that will

bring more growth to our region.

The Lansing Regional Chamber Political Action Committee (LRC-PAC) recently gave 20 current local

elected ocials and candidates an opportunity to meet and greet Chamber sta and LRC-PAC Board

members. The event, held at the Lansing Regional Chamber o Commerce, provided an opportunity or

elected leaders to urther understand what resources are available to help them engage and interact with

    the business community.

Its important or elected ocials to understand how the Chamber works to promote business growthand sound public policy or the Greater Lansing region, said Kristin Beltzer, LRCC senior vice

president or government relations and public aairs. We want our ocials to better understand how

    we can eectively work together.
