THE MEANING OF ACADEMIC DRESS

Academic dress, which includes a gown, a hood, and a mortarboard cap, originated in the oldest universities and colleges. In fourteenth centuryEngland the statutes of most colleges and universities forbade “excess inapparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown which providedwarmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. Thetailoring of gowns was strictly governed. In the early days of Oxford, anytailor who departed from the authorized design of the gown, “even by anail’s breadth,” was to be punished by the vice chancellor of the universi-ty or college. The four basic kinds of degrees awarded by the colleges anduniversities are the associate, the bachelor of arts, the master of arts, andthe doctorate. The holders of those degrees are distinguished by theirgowns and the hoods. The associate degree, awarded by communitycolleges, signifies completion of two years of specific work.

The Gowns

Most academic gowns are black. The cut of the robe and sleeves, as wellas the trimming, indicates various academic degrees. No trimmings arepermitted on the gowns for the associate, bachelor of arts, or master ofarts degrees. However, the gown worn by those who have earned theirdoctorate has a front facing of velvet and three bars of the same velvetacross the sleeves.

Mortarboard Caps

There is no general rule for the position of the tassel on a mortarboard. However, numerous institutions have required candidates to wear theirtassels on the right side during commencement exercises and to shift themto the left side at the moment the degrees are conferred. This customreplaces individual hooding which was practiced many years ago and stillremains in effect at some universities.

The Hoods

Hoods fasten around the neck, drape over the shoulder, and fall down theback. Historically, hoods had several uses. They were used as a headcovering; a cape; a receptacle for carrying books and other personal items;and as a bag to collect alms, since most medieval scholars were quite poor.Hoods are worn by those who have earned the master’s degree ordoctorate. The colors on the hood represent the field of study andindicate from which college or university the individual received thedegree.

NATIONAL ANTHEM

Oh, say! can you see, by thedawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed atthe twilight’s last gleaming;

Whose broad stripes andbright stars, throughthe perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watchedwere so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the nightthat our flag was still there:

Oh, say! does that Star-spangledbanner yet wave

O’er the land of the free andthe home of the brave?

ALMA MATER

O Alma Mater, Hail with

pride and loyalty,

So sing we now with hearts

uplifted to thy glory.

O Cypress, Thee we love,

Thy spires shall rise above,

Ennobled through the years

with splendor,

Cypress, hail to thee.

SPRING CANDIDATES 2010CYPRESS COLLEGEOUTSTANDING GRADUATE FOR 2010

Honor Roll student Sarah Clingan is Cypress College’s Outstanding Graduate for theClass of 2010. She was selected from a group of 24 finalists. Her plans are totransfer next year to California State University, Long Beach and pursue herBachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology.

Clingan is a member of the Psychology Club and has a 4.0 GPA.

“She truly has a compelling story of success as she moved through her years hereat Cypress College,” said Paul Bottiaux, the college’s Student Activities Directorand chair of the selection committee. “She is a fine example of perseverance andexcellence.”

Struggling to read and spell because of dyslexia — and feeling shamed by thespecial classes she attended because of it — Clingan gave up on school in thefifth grade. By 18 she was homeless and addicted to drugs. By 20, she was inprison.

“At that point I had to take a good look at my life and decide how I was going tolive and what type of person I wanted to be,” she said. “I made a decision to nolonger walk down the path of destruction. I realized that it wouldn’t be an easyoption, but I made it and I stuck to it. I had lived with women who were nevergoing to get out of prison, and I knew that I did not want to let my life end uplike that.”

Clingan said she credits her parents — and her own perseverance — for theturnaround in her life.

“I am proud to say that I now have seven years clean, and I am a mother and awife,” she said. “I used to fight the system from the outside because I disagreedwith it. I still disagree with it, but I have found that education helps me fightthe problems from within the system itself.”

Clingan says she plans to earn a Ph.D. in psychology. That’s an impressive changein confidence from her first trip to Cypress College.

“As I walked onto campus I was full of fear,” Clingan said, recalling her firstexperiences here in Fall, 2007. “I was unsure of how I would do and had very lowexpectations for myself. Fortunately, looking back, I can say that I have farexceeded my expectations.”

In addition to the Honor Roll and Psychology Club, Clingan is a member of the PsiBeta national honors society in psychology for community colleges. She has alsoparticipated with the forensics team and presented with the team at a speechcompetition held at Cal State Long Beach.

Off campus, she is a member of an advisory committee for a group advocating forsocial justice and to enhance the re-entry process for people coming out of jail orprison.

“Higher education has offered me a way to overcome numerous obstacles in life,”she said. “Cypress College has given me confidence in myself I never had before.”

Especially close to his big heart are his visits with military personnel overseas, aswell as at home. Just last year, he joined Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of theJoint Chiefs of Staff, on a visit to Iraq and Afghanistan on a USO tour to motivateand inspire troops.

At home, Mr. Lasorda has talked numerous times at the Air Force Academy, theNaval Academy, West Point, the Naval War College, and at 40 military bases acrossthe country.

This past fall, on the occasion of his 82nd birthday, Lasorda’s portrait wasunveiled in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., this in recognition ofhis contributions to American culture and history.

The recipient of countless honors, Mr. Lasorda recently had the distinction ofreceiving the Emperor Award of the Rising Sun, the highest award given in Japan. And, while the Japanese wanted him to come to their country for the presenta-tion, he requested the award be presented here so his family could attend. NATIONAL ANTHEM

Oh, say! can you see, by thedawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed atthe twilight’s last gleaming;

Whose broad stripes andbright stars, throughthe perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watchedwere so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the nightthat our flag was still there:

Oh, say! does that Star-spangledbanner yet wave

O’er the land of the free andthe home of the brave?

ALMA MATER

O Alma Mater, Hail with

pride and loyalty,

So sing we now with hearts

uplifted to thy glory.

O Cypress, Thee we love,

Thy spires shall rise above,

Ennobled through the years

with splendor,

Cypress, hail to thee.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The Commencement ceremony affirms students' search forknowledge and marks an important educational milestone. It isbased in tradition and ritual established several centuries ago toprovide an occasion for students, faculty, staff, family membersand guests to recognize the achievement of an academic goal. AtCypress College, this goal is earning an Associate Degree.

By individual path, each graduate has reached this goal and isnow and into the future, one of ours – a Cypress Collegegraduate. My very best wishes to you for a bright and fulfillingfuture as you continue your education, pursue a career, or takeyour place in the community. I also encourage you to keep intouch with your instructors and come back to the campus for avisit now and then. Congratulations! We are very proud to claimyou as graduates.

Dr. Michael J. KaslerPresident, Cypress College
