Undefeated Bayern, who are chasing a record fourth consecutive league crown, are on 24 points, seven clear of Dortmund. Schalke had been flying high after four Bundesliga wins and two Europa League victories before Sunday’s kick-off. Cologne’s French striker Anthony Modeste claimed his sixth goal in eight games when he netted a Leonardo Bittencourt pass on the stroke of half- time at Schalke before the guests ran riot in the final ten minutes. Cologne doubled their lead at Gelsenkirchen’s Veltins Arena when defensive midfielder Yannick Gerhardt slotted home after beating three defend- ers to make a mockery of the home back four, on 79 minutes. To compound Schalke’s misery, substi- tute Simon Voller drilled his shot into the bottom right-hand corner, just a minute after coming on, to wrap up the three points on 84 minutes. Germany international Mueller opened his account in the 26th minute and doubled the hosts’ lead with a penalty nine minutes later for his eighth league goal as the Bundesliga leaders took control of the top-of-the-table clash. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang kept up his remarkable run of scoring in every one of Dortmund’s league matches this season as he slotted in from close range a minute later. But Bayern forward Lewandowski killed off any hopes of a comeback with two goals early in the second Hoops edge Hamilton Celtic close in on ‘Aberdeen’ GLASGOW, Oct 4, (AFP): Celtic closed to within one point of Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership as they came from behind to defeat Hamilton 2-1 on Sunday. The Hoops took to the pitch at New Douglas Park knowing they could reduce the deficit behind the league leaders after they suffered a 5-1 home hammering at the hands of St Johnstone on Saturday. However, their hopes were dealt an early blow when Gramoz Kurtaj took advantage of hesitance in the Hoops defence to slot home a fourth minute opener. Celtic restored parity in the 26th minute when Dedryk Boyata fired past Michael McGovern from close range before Leigh Griffiths moved his side in front with a 31st minute header as Celtic returned to winning ways after two con- secutive home draws. Ronny Deila admitted his side hadn’t been at their best. “You could say we were a little bit lucky today. We were not very effec- tive, we didn’t create much and we didn’t play well,” the Celtic manager said. “Today was just about hard work and staying in there to get the three points. But I’m proud of the boys as that’s four times in a row we’ve taken three points after Europe this season.” Hamilton player-manager Martin Canning was disappointed to lose. “We started the game really well and scored our goal but they were two dis- appointing goals to lose,” Canning said. “We’re disappointed we didn’t take something. I thought we dominated most of the second half. We had lots of half- opportunities, without really creating a good chance.” Hamilton, who had won five out of their opening nine fixtures, had got off to a perfect start when Kurtaj gave them a fourth minute lead. A long bouncing ball caused panic in the Celtic defence and after Tyler Blackett missed a header, Kurtaj out- muscled Boyata to turn him and race in on goal and slot the ball expertly into the bottom corner past Craig Gordon. Celtic tried to response immediately and Nir Bitton dragged a shot wide before sending another effort from 25 yards by the post. The Hoops were looking shaky at the back and Hamilton earned a corner when Ali Crawford’s poked shot was deflected out for a corner. However, Celtic soon found them- selves on level terms. Griffiths floated a free-kick to the back post where Boyata made amends for his part in the opening goal by side-footing the ball high into the net past Michael McGovern. Hamilton barely had time to regroup before Celtic moved in front through Griffiths. The striker leapt high above the Hamilton defence to meet Saidy Janko’s cross and send a looping header into the far corner of the net. SOCCER Maccarone late strike stuns Sassuolo Inter back on top as Roma pummel Palermo MILAN, Oct 4, (AFP): Ivan Perisic’s maiden goal for Inter Milan in a 1-1 draw at Sampdoria sent the Nerazzurri back on top of Serie A on Sunday, as Roma con- tinued their early season push with a con- vincing 4-2 win away to Palermo. With five opening wins, Roberto Mancini’s Inter side had been the early season pacesetters — until a 4-1 hum- bling by Fiorentina last week sent La Viola on top thanks to superior goal dif- ference. In a hotly-contested encounter at the Luigi Ferraris stadium, Inter looked to be heading for their second successive defeat of the season after Luis Muriel slid in at the back post to meet Pedro Pereira’s inswinging cross and beat goal- keeper Samir Handanovic in the 51st minute. It ended the hosts long wait for a goal after a succession of earlier misses by Eder, Muriel and Joaquin Correa, who produced an absolute howler when he somehow skewed the ball wide of an empty net only a yard from the goalline. Those misses proved costly when Sampdoria’s defence went walkabout in the 75th minute and Perisic finished off a fine attacking move to level for the visi- tors. The draw, Inter’s first of the season, saw the Nerazzurri go top of the pile with a one-point lead on Fiorentina, although Paulo Sousa’s men will go two points clear if they beat Atalanta later Sunday. Fellow scudetto hopefuls Roma moved up to provisional third place at two points behind Inter with a comprehensive 4-2 win away to Palermo. Days after a humbling defeat to Champions League group opponents BATE Borisov, Roma travelled to Sicily hoping to make amends albeit without Edin Dzeko and Francesco Totti, who are both sidelined with injury for the next three weeks. However any fears the Giallorossi would suffer another slip-up on their travels were dispelled after just two minutes when Miralem Pjanic put Roma ahead after latching on to Alessandro Florenzi’s through ball to beat Stefano Sorrentino from close range. Florenzi doubled Roma’s lead 12 min- utes later with a clinical strike after the ball fell kindly inside the area, and Gervinho confirmed his recent return to form with a superb strike on 28 minutes to put the match beyond reach. The Ivory Coast striker, who scored his first league goal since November 2014 two weeks ago, cut in from the left side of the area, holding off defender Giancarlo Gonzalez all the way before beating Sorrentino with a superb curling effort from just inside the area. Palermo reduced arrears twice, through Alberto Gilardino on the hour and Gonzalez on the stroke of full time. But Gervinho put the result beyond all doubt with his second of the game barely a minute later to hand Roma their fourth win in seven games. A late strike by Massimo Maccarone secured a precious 1-0 win over Sassuolo as Empoli moved six places up to to 13th in Serie A on Sunday. In Sunday’s early game, Sassuolo, fifth overnight only three points behind lead- ers Fiorentina, looked to have secured a share of the spoils at the Carlo Castellani stadium. However Maccarone’s strike two min- utes from the final whistle secured the points to get Marco Giampaolo’s men back to winning ways after defeats to Frosinone and Atalanta. The match took a dramatic turn in the final minutes when Empoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski saw red for a second book- able offence, but the hosts held on for just their second win of the season. SOCCER Caen beat Saint-Etienne Monaco held in check by Rennes PARIS, Oct 4, (AFP): Monaco’s stutter- ing early-season form continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Rennes in Ligue 1 on Sunday, while Caen rose to third after beating Saint-Etienne. Rennes, whose terrific start has some- what subsided after a fourth draw in a row, took a first-half lead at the Stade Louis II through Abdoulaye Doucoure. But Monaco fought back after the break with Brazilian Wallace scoring his first goal in the French top flight to sal- vage a point for Leonardo Jardim’s men, who also had Danijel Subasic to thank for a second-half penalty save. The principality side have now won just three of nine matches to start the campaign and sit tenth in the table, seven points behind Paris Saint-Germain ahead of their clash with bitter rivals Marseille later. Rennes broke the deadlock four min- utes before the break when Monaco were caught short at the back as Doucoure slipped in between Andrea Raggi and Thomas Lemar to head past Subasic. Monaco responded six minutes into the second half as Nabil Dirar flicked on a Lemar corner with Wallace applying the finishing touch. Rennes should have regained the lead on 64 minutes after Fabinho brought down Cheikh M’Bengue in the area but Pedro Henrique saw his spot-kick kept out by Subasic. Rennes also suffered the loss of winger Paul-Georges Ntep, who was stretchered off with a hamstring injury midway through the second half - probably ruling him out of international duty with France next week. Elsewhere, Caen registered a fourth win in five as Andy Delort’s 62nd-minute goal was enough to give them all three points against Saint-Etienne as Les Verts slumped to a second successive defeat, having entered the weekend in second. Lorient rallied from a goal down to beat Bordeaux 3-2 with Benjamin Moukandjo, Majeed Waris and Zargo Toure all on target for the hosts after Diego Rolan had given Willy Sagnol’s men a first-half lead.
