A Builder of Programs and People
Focus.December.2012
By her own admission, the only thing thatStella Cash has ailed at during her remarkablecareer is retirement. In act, Cash has hadour careers in which she has been widelyacclaimed including developing projects andprograms at Michigan State University andSparrow Health System, and helping themachieve national or international recognition. Each time she retires rom one career, Stellahas been persuaded by the likes o MichiganState University President Lou Anna K. Simonand Sparrow CEO Dennis Swan to take animportant program to new heights.
It is because o Stella Cashs vast proessionalachievements, her passion or helping people particularly as a role model and mentor to
women and her deep commitment to the
community that she was selected as the 2012recipient o the ATHENA Award. Its an honorthat those who know Stella say could not bebestowed on a more deserving individual.
Stella Cash is well-known, respected, andadmired throughout our region, state and nation, said MaryLee Davis, Ph.D. and 1982 ATHENA
Award recipient in nominating Cash or this yearsaward. In act, ew individuals have achieved the
level o distinction, leadership, and meritoriousaccomplishments in as many dierent proessionalelds as this multi-talented individual.
Ater being inormed o her award, Stella looked upthe list o past recipients and said she elt honoredto be considered alongside the outstandingindividuals who have received the award over thepast 30 years.
They are all people who have made a dierence in
the community, said Cash. Each one o them hasimpacted the region in a unique way.
A native o Arkansas and still possessing acharming southern accent, Cash moved toMichigan in 1975, when her husband was heavilyrecruited to work in the Food Science program atMSU. Stella also landed a university job. By thetime I ound out what a spousal hire was, I wasdirector o Dietetics, jokes Cash.
Stella led a team that grew the MSU DieteticProgram to become the largest in the nation. Shealso developed her own consulting business Food Creations, Inc. - in which she has servedas a major consultant to over 30 ood industries,
including more than 20 years working with Kellogg. In addition, she became a major consultant or theUSDA and the Department o Educations SchoolMeals Program or the State o Michigan.
It was obvious to people who worked with Stellathrough the years that her approach to work andstrong connection with the people around her were
responsible or her impressive successes.
Stella is a builder o programs and people, said Bill Beekman, who serves as Secretary tothe Board o Trustees and Executive Assistantto MSU President Simon. She brings to eachtask keen vision, thoughtul wisdom, grit anddetermination, a passion or people and anunrelenting ethic to simply do the right thing tothe best o her ability.
Following her rst retirement, MSU PresidentSimon convinced Stella to spearhead a majorspecial project, the development o a Sports andCardiovascular Program in the Department oRadiology. Later, President Simon again convincedStella to unretire and become Vice President o
Alumni Engagement, a six-month assignment thatlasted 25 months!
A month ater her third retirement rom MSU, Stella
was given an opportunity to start another newcareer. She became part o the Sparrow leadershipteam as Director o Development and StrategicPartnerships. Sparrow CEO Dennis Swan readilyadmits he was happy to help Stella again becomea ailure at retirement. Ater our months, Stella
was given the added responsibility o the SparrowFoundation, and was appointed Vice President oDevelopment and Strategic Partnerships.
Stella has a git or connecting the right people
with worthwhile causes, said Swan. She is arole model or proessionalism. Simply put, it ispractically impossible to withhold support orthe goals she strives to achieve or the beneto others.
Though she never loses sight o her southernupbringing, Stella is a ull-time Spartan or lie (Ihave my roots home and my real home). Sheis passionate about the Lansing community as
refected in the numerous boards and organizationsshe has served through the years.
Her love or people rom all walks o lie is a greatsource o joy or Stella - especially her amily, including husband Dr. Jerry Cash, two daughtersand their husbands and ve grandchildren. WhileStella is deservedly renowned as a builder oprograms, it may her unique ability as a buildero people where she has enjoyed the greatest
satisaction.I will always treasure the people Ive met along the
journey, says Stella. Those who have helped meand those I have helped. I am very blessed.
Stella is a builder of programs and
people. She brings to each task
keen vision, thoughtful wisdom, grit
and determination, a passion forpeople and an unrelenting ethic to
simply do the right thing to the best
of her ability.

I there is a theme that I have heard rom businesses in the Greater Lansingregion during the past year, it is this: Business leaders understand thatin order to succeed in a rapidly changing, technology-driven globaleconomy, they must think dierently and look beyond what have been
their traditional markets or new sources o business and revenue. In many respects, 2012 has been a continuation o an eort by theLansing Regional Chamber o Commerce (LRCC) to help our membersidentiy new business opportunities, and to provide them with the tools tosupport their growth in the region, throughout Michigan and the U.S., andmuch urther beyond.
One o the tools that is already making an impact or area businesses hasbeen the State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP), a program developedby the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) which oers
grants to help businesses identiy and connect to new and expandedinternational markets. Bekum America Corporation o Williamston andBaker Drivetrain o Haslett were among the rst in the region to utilizeSTEP grants to identiy potential new international markets. LRCC is theadministrator or STEP grants in an 18-county central Michigan region. We are looking orward to partnering with LEAP, Inc. and the MEDC in2013, continuing eorts to generate more corporate involvement in theSTEP program.
The LRCC-led trip to China in October was an eye-opener or all o uswho were privileged to be involved. Our group o 24 business, economicdevelopment and educational leaders rom the region ound theopportunity to learn more about Chinas culture, rich history and businessopportunities very educational and inspiring. We are considering a uturetrip, which I would encourage anyone considering doing business inChina to join us.
2012 was also a year o considerable growth or Port Lansing, particularly with the October opening o the new Global Logistics Centre,a 48,000-square oot cargo warehouse that will serve the upper Midwestas a logistics hub or international commerce.
The Lansing Regional Chamber o Commerce is committed to helpingour members make important business connections, whether they areinternational in nature or right here in your back yard. When you thinkabout it, no matter how large or small your business, or where your nextcustomer is located, you need to be equipped to execute your strategy inan ever-changing global economy. We are committed to your successand pledge to serve you to the best o our ability in the coming year.
All o us at the Lansing Regional Chamber o Commerce wish you the verybest over the holiday season and look orward to helping you achieve
your business goals in 2013.

Lansing Regional Chamber of
Commerce Lauds Michigan Voters
for Defeating Special Interest-
Backed Ballot Proposals
Focus.December.2012
The Lansing Regional Chamber o Commerce (LRCC) credited Michigan
voters or their wisdom in deeating several o the special interest-backedballot proposals on the November general election ballot. Five o the sixproposals that were soundly deeated were placed on the ballot by petitiondrives unded by special interest groups.
Michigan citizens demonstrated their desire to protect their Constitution romspecial interest groups that tried to make an end-run around the democraticprocess by nancing a ballot initiative supporting their sel-serving policies, said Kristin Beltzer, LRCC senior vice president or government relations &public aairs.
LRCC publically opposed proposals two through six on Novembers ballot.LRCC ocials were particularly pleased in the overwhelming deeat oproposal six, a proposal that was nancially backed by the owners o the
Ambassador Bridge, and would have required Michigan voters to approveconstruction o the proposed New International Trade Crossing.
Michigan voters saw through the alse advertising produced by the ownerso the Ambassador Bridge or what it was an attempt to protect one amilysmonopoly and prevent a much-needed new bridge that will increase the fowo goods between Michigan and Canada, said Beltzer.
LRCC also supported proposal one, the state law that allows or emergencymanagers to oversee nancially distressed municipalities and schooldistricts. Though proposal one was also deeated, LRCC ocials expressedoptimism that new legislation allowing or emergency managers will bepassed in the post-election legislative session.
