Renovate and Celebrate - August 6

The Renovate and Celebrate Committee has priori-tized some items that need attention-termite exter-mination, repairing and painting the entrance doors to the Chapel and the repaving of the parking lot. These projects require the majority of the money saved over the past 2 1/2 years. Next week, a second collection will be taken during all the masses. Your sacrificial offerings reflect the pride you have for these places of prayer and worship. We pray for your con-tinued generosity so we can attend to the needs of our beloved historical structures and grounds.

Archbishop Gomez calls on Congress to pass Dream Act

“We are talking about people who have grown up in this country since they were young children. America is all they know,” he said. They are presently in “limbo,” without any legal status even as they work, go to college, and serve in the armed forces. “It is long past time for us to welcome these young immigrants as citizens and give them the oppor-tunities they need to flourish and to help our country grow. A just and compassionate society cannot continue to punish innocent children for the mistakes of their parents.”

TRANFIGURATION OF THE LORD LETTER FROM THE PASTOR PAGE THREE This Sunday we celebrate the Transfigura-tion of our Lord. This event is narrated in Mat-thew, Mark and Luke (The Synoptic gospels). Strangely enough, this significant event in Jesus’ life does not appear in the gospel of John. In order to understand and appreciate the Transfiguration we need to look back to the previous chapter which forms the context to this event. In the previous chapter Jesus asks his disciples about what people are saying as to who he is; Peter confesses that Jesus is the Messiah. This is followed by Jesus’ command to the disciples to not tell anyone about Peter’s confession. Jesus then predicts his coming passion, death and resurrection. Peter rebukes Jesus for this prediction and Jesus responds to Peter and the disciples with very harsh words about dis-cipleship. Six days later Jesus takes Peter, James and John to a mountain where the transfiguration takes place. In all three of the synoptic gospels the same order of the events is found and the same people appear: Jesus, Peter, James and John, Moses and Elijah, the cloud and the voice coming from the cloud. At this point in the synoptic gospels there are still ques-tions as to who Jesus is. The transfiguration clears all doubts about Jesus’ identity, particularly with those closest to him who will inherit and continue the mission of Jesus. There are key details in this story that define Jesus identity. The transfiguration takes place on a mountain. Mountains in the bible are places of encounter with the divine; think of Moses (Mount Sinai) and Elijah (Mount Carmel). The presence of the cloud is a symbol of God. When Moses spoke with God the cloud was always present. The story mentions that Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus; they represent the Law and the Prophetic tradition. Their pres-ence in this event affirms Jesus’ identity and mission. The transfiguration culminates with the voice coming from the cloud saying: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him.” What are we to take from this event in Jesus life? The most crucial information from this event is Jesus’ identity: He is the Son of God; loved by God. Jesus’ identity and mission is affirmed by the presence of Moses and Elijah. For whose benefit is this vision: For Jesus, his disciples and us. For Jesus this experience provides comfort and affirma-tion because his passion is near. For his disciples this vi-sion clears doubts about Jesus’ identity and where he comes from. From Peter’s reaction we learn that while these fun-damental experiences are needed to ground our disciple-ship, we have to return to the valley. The valley is the place were most of lives are lived. We cannot remain on the mountain. For us the transfiguration also reveals Jesus iden-tity, but it also tells us that this revelation is more than knowledge; it is something ultimately given to us by God.

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

"And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.” (Matthew 17:2)

TRANSFIGURATION AWARENESS

Today’s Gospel, in the midst of Ordinary time, invites us to join Peter, James and John as they behold a very unordinary event, the transfiguration of Christ. The transfiguration of Christ was not a mere metamorphosis. Christ was not changed from a terrestrial being to a celestial divine being. Rather, his transfiguration was a moment in time when the divine glory he had always possessed broke through his humanity and shone with a brilliance that was blinding. Noth-ing could have prepared the apostles for this experience, and there was no way to describe it except with cosmic image-ry. The brightest light flashed forth from his countenance, like the birth of a new star. Who would believe such an ex-plosion of power and might would have taken place? We sing of this glory time and again in the psalms. We proclaim that nothing can stand before the splendor of the Lord; even mountains melt like wax. Yet when it really appears we can hardly believe it ourselves. But the splendor of God is manifested in each generation of believers. We are the ones who today possess the prophetic message; we are the present-day eyewitnesses of Christ’s majesty. We too have moments when we might behold his glory and hear the voice proclaiming his identity, but we need eyes of faith and ears that are open. We really never know when God will choose to reveal a glimpse of divine glory. The disciples probably thought Jesus was merely taking them up a mountain to pray, as he had done on other occasions. Like them, all we can do is follow Jesus and open ourselves to whatever God has in store for us.

You can obtain tickets and return ticket stubs and money to the Fiesta table outside of Sunday masses, the Recto-ry office, or the School Offices.

FIESTA Scrip Tickets

Last year, we transitioned from cash to tickets (scrip) for the Fiesta. The use of tickets removes the need to make change at each food, beverage and game booth, and it essentially speeds up the lines and cre-ate a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Pre-sale tickets are being sold at the schools, rectory and at a table outside of church after all the Masses.

Donations Needed Donations of paper plates, dispenser napkins, plastic forks/knives/spoons, paper towel rolls, paper/foam 8 oz. cups, and heavy-duty menudo bowls are especial-ly needed. They can be purchased by the case at Smart & Final, Costco, or Sam’s Club and dropped off at the Rectory Office. We also need heavy duty exten-sion cords, power strips, and bungee cords, new or used in good condition.

Refrigerators and White Elephant Fiesta needs refrigerators in clean, good working con-dition. Our supply is low. If you have an extra fridge, please donate it to the Fiesta. Your donation will help us for many years, and you’ll receive a tax donation. Please call Xavier Vargas at 626-818-2357 if you can help. For the White Elephant Booth, we need your knic-knacks, appliances, tools, books, household items, electronics, gift items, collectables, and other small goods. No clothes or shoes or junk please! You may leave your donations at the Rectory Office.

Volunteer Today We need your help for Fiesta. Help is needed for set up week, for grounds maintenance on the weekend, after closing with the Midnighters, and with the Sun-day Night Team. Stop by the Fiesta Booth after Mass, come to the Parish or School Offices, or call Vanessa Galindo, Volunteer Chair, at 626-940-4980, or send a detailed email to her at [email protected].
