Resident of the Month

Taylor was born to Taylor and Char-lie Cawood in Cleveland, Ten-nessee on May 8, 1932. He was the youngest of seven children. He was

born in a house 500 feet from where he grew up. His father passed away three month and eleven days before he was born. He shares his wonder and marvel at the ability of his moth-er because she raised all seven chil-dren on her own.

As a child and young man, he was an active member of the 4H Club. Throughout his years with the club, he was a repeated recipient of awards for showing his cattle. He also worked the land on the Hardwick Farm. In high school he played center on the basketball team.

The day after graduation he began working for the local hardware and feed store that was also a furniture store. He worked there for 15 years. He got married to his high school sweetheart, Doris Jean Rogers, who

was two years his junior and she was still in high school when they married. Taylor proudly shares that they were married for sixty-three and half years. They have two children, Sherry Jo and Randy, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Among some of his lineage are a doctor, a family member that works at the Pentagon, and a superintendent of a school.

He eventually changed career fields and became a licensed real estate agent and worked for Carroll and Greene Real Estate for forty years.

An interesting fact, other than grow-ing up 500 feet from where he was born, is the land that Bradley Square Mall is situated on was once part of his farmland.

It is wonderful to hear Taylor share where the dairy farms used to be all throughout town and to hear a bit of history of Cleveland as we travel around the city. He makes many smile with his quick-witted responses, cre-ative conversation, and chivalrous behavior. What a delight he is to all who call him friend and associate.

Because of space and the advent of electronic books, I am no longer surrounded by volumes of great reads. Sometimes I miss it. But there

are certain books I have saved be-cause they spoke to me at one point in my life. One of those titles is an interesting little work by Robert Ful-ghum called All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. The premise of this book is that all that is necessary to live a meaningful life are things we learned in kindergarten.

Fulghum writes, “Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school moun-tain, but there in the sandpile at kin-dergarten and Sunday School. These are the things I learned:

• Share everything.• Play fair.• Don’t hit people.• Put things back where you found

them.• Clean up your own mess.• Don’t take things that aren’t yours.• Say you’re sorry when you hurt

somebody.

• Wash your hands before you eat.• Flush.• Warm cookies and cold milk are

good for you.• Live a balanced life-learn some and

think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

• Take a nap every afternoon.• Be aware of wonder. Remember

the little seed in the Styrofoam cup.• And then remember the Dick and

Jane books and the first word you learned. The biggest word of all LOOK.”

I have kept this little book to remind myself that when life gets complicat-ed and hard to navigate, I learned as a child the most important lessons that I know today.

This advice did not originate with Rob-ert Fulghum. Jesus said in Matthew 18:3, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” So, clean up your own mess and go have some cookies and cold milk. And af-terwards, take a nap. You will feel much better. Always remember you are loved!
