A Michael Murphy goal in the first minute gave Glenswilly a dream start, but Ballinderry came back and were in control by half-time. Caolan Kelly goaled for the deter- mined Glenswilly men at the start of the second half, but the experienced Derry champions kept their cool to win by four points. “We left it on the field and those in the green, white and gold jerseys gave it everything there for the Glen,” said the devastated Glenswilly manager, Gary McDaid. “Ballinderry are just a class act. We competed well there - right up to the 50th minute. But that last 10 min- utes just showed their experience and their ability,” he added. McDaid took his time to ponder his next move, before agreeing to stay on as Glenswilly manager. Buncrana minors put in an excel- lent performance but just came up short against Watty Grahams in the St Paul’s Tournament in Belfast. St Eunan’s GAA club expressed their disappointment after Setanta were crowned under 21 hurling champions on a walkover, after St Eunan’s could not field in the decider due to a number of their players sit- ting exams. Three new faces were elected to the Donegal GAA executive, with De- nis Ellis (Naomh Columba) appoint- ed vice-chairman, Cieran Kelly (St Naul’s) elected treasurer, while Ed Byrne fought off Oisin Cannon to win the vote to be the new PRO. Former Donegal star Kevin Cas- sidy was named the new player-man- ager of Gaoth Dobhair. In a surpris- ing move, he brought in ex Derry footballer Paddy Bradley to join his backroom team. Michael Murphy was named Done- gal Footballer of the year at the Donegal GAA banquet in the Abbey Hotel. Danny Cullen was given Hurler of the year, while Karen Guthrie was selected as Lady Foot- baller of the year. Jason Quigley picked up the out- standing Achievement award at the IABA’s annual awards. The Finn Val- ley ABC star was linked with a switch to professional boxing, and his father, Conor urged the IABA to act quickly or risk losing their prized asset. However, the IABA’s High Perfor- mance coach, Billy Walsh encour- aged Jason to keep pursuing his Olympic dreams. “Anyone who never goes to an Olympic games will regret it. After that these guys have plenty of youth on their side to carry on,” Walsh said at the RTE Sports Awards. Conor Quigley became one of only four Irish boxing coaches to attain three-star coaching status with the International Boxing Association, alongside Billy Walsh, Zaur Antia and Pete Taylor. A phenomenal year for Donegal boxing concluded in December, with a number of local boxers tasting suc- cess at the Ulster 9 Counties champi- onship finals in Burnfoot. St Johnston powerhouse Brett McGinty blasted his way to a 3-0 win over Conor Gint for his eighth provincial title. Convoy’s Bryan McNamee added the Boys 4 60kgs medal to his grow- ing CV after an impressive stoppage of Ricky Moore. Callum Toland, Stephen Bonner, Kevin McMonagle and Joseph Reddan also shone at the finals. In soccer, Seamus Coleman scored twice in December as Everton con- tinued their rise under Roberto Mar- tinez. The Killybegs man netted against Stoke City, before scoring a piledriver as the toffees got the bet- ter of Swansea City. Shay Given joined Middlesbor- ough on a one-month deal and marked his 600th club appearance with a clean sheet against Bolton Wanderers. The Lifford goalkeeper tweeted af- ter the match: “Great to be back in action today (and) make my 600th club (appearance). A clean sheet but more importantly the three points made a perfect day.” New Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan signed up a number of last season’s squad including Kevin McHugh and Ciaran Coll for 2014, while he also brought in former Harps skipper Packie Mailey for his second spell with the club. Cockhill Celtic pulled off a fantas- tic result to beat Crumlin United in the Intermediate Cup. However, there was no joy for Let- terkenny Rovers and Swilly Rovers who were both dumped out of the competition. Rathmullan Celtic finished they year on top of the Donegal League af- ter they picked up two derby wins over Kilmacrennan Celtic and Mil- ford United. It was a poor month for Tom Coll’s Glenea United who only collected two points from a possible six and they dropped into second po- sition as a result. Chloe Magee’s bid to win her first Irish Open came to an end when she was beaten by American Beiwen Zhang in the semi-final in Baldoyle. She also bowed out of the Italian Open a week later after being pipped by Spaniard Carolina Marin in the quarter-final of the women’s singles. Ruairi Finnegan was part of the Irish men’s junior team who finished ninth at the European Cross-Country Championships in Belgrade, however he was annoyed with his individual performance. Lifford AC athlete Ann Marie McGlynn got to wear her first Irish senior international singlet at the age of 33. She was part of the Irish ladies team who finished sixth. Glenswilly’s wonderful run in theUlster Club Championship came toan end when they lost to a superiorBallinderry team in the Ulster final.
