Abstract
Nipah palm is a very common plant that can be found along the riverbank in Sarawak. Nipah sugar sap also known as “gula apong” has been collected by the locals that stay at the surrounding area. However little is known about the mechanical properties of this palm. It is the aims of this research to test the impact properties of the composites. Fibers from nipah fronds were extracted by soaking the fronds in water for 3 months to loosen up the substance that binds the fibers. Nipah fiber composites were fabricated using hand lay up process and 24 hours room temperature curing. Izod impact test were conducted on these composites sample as a function of its volume percent. Highest impact value for notched sample is observed for 25 vol. % loading and 15vol.% loading for unnotched sample.

The first colloquium was hosted by Curtin University Sarawak on the 23rd of April 2014, in Miri. It was the first joint activity between Curtin University Sarawak and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, in December 2013. On 14th April 2015, the 2nd joint colloquium was hosted by UNIMAS in Kuching, Sarawak. It has now become an annual event between the institutions. Again in 2016, 3rd research colloquium - North Borneo Research Colloquium (NBRC) was wholly organised by Curtin University Malaysia and held on 18th and 19th April 2016 in Curtin Miri. It was an expanded form of the previous events, which is focused on the theme “Research Advancements towards a Brighter Tomorrow”. The paper and poster presentation encompass a full range of engineering and business disciplines. The aims of the colloquia were to provide an avenue for the higher degree by research (HDR) students to present their research work, improve their presentation skills, facilitate cross-fertilization of research ideas, to engender a corporate research culture and to provide an avenue for networking as well as fostering friendship and collaboration. The events also included interesting keynotes delivered by

experts in the field of agriculture engineering, bioinformatics and economics. The colloquium had also prepared recreation activities such as dinner event on 18th and a trip to famous Niah Cave on 20th April.
This year, Curtin University Sarawak had widened participation by inviting more institutions in the North Borneo region. There were nearly 100 registered participants from UNIMAS, University Teknologi Brunei and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Around 40 of postgraduate students and 7 lecturers from Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Economics and Business, UNIMAS joined this colloquium.
In NBRC, Ms. Tracy anak Dickie from Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering won the award of best oral presentation and Ms. Nurul Huda Nadziri from Department of Civil Engineering won the award of best poster presentation.
46Postgraduate Proposal Defense 2016
The proposal defense is a compulsory session taken by the Master and Doctorate students. The purpose of the proposal defense is to assure that the student’s plan of research and their proposed research question is complete and holds academic merit. Apart from that, the event is carried out to review the progress and content of the postgraduate students on their research.
The 5th Postgraduate Proposal Defense was held successfully at Faculty of Engineering on 11th and 12th May 2016. The event comprised of all four Engineering Departments; Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, and Department of Chemical Engineering and Energy Sustainability.
There were twenty-two students registered for the proposal defense which was then divided into three sessions per day for the two days event. Most of them were the students who registered on 2015/2016.
During proposal defense, students presented their proposal in front of the Chairman, Selected panel members, their Supervisors, and/or Co-supervisors of the student. At the end of presentation, selected panel members asked questions and gave some advice to the students.

Materials Characterization Workshop Series 3Material Characterization Series 3 was conducted
by Prof. Dr Amir Azam Khan and Prof. Dr Sinin Hamdan from Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, and also Prof. Dr Ng Chee Khoon from Department of Civil Engineering, on 10th to 11th May 2016 in UNIMAS. This workshop leads the student to have in-depth understanding on the mechanical properties and hands on mechanical testing for materials and concrete.
In this workshop, Prof. Dr Sinin Hamdan reviewed certain fundamental aspects of mechanics of materials such as stress and strain to provide an overview of mechanical properties of materials. Furthermore, he introduced Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) which is a very versatile method as it allows researcher to produce a wide range of samples from sensitive probes of molecular structure to model studies. Other than that, he also shared his views on the method to measure mechanical properties through acoustic techniques on wooden soundboard. He further explained how the types of wood will affect the vibrational behaviour of soundboard and how to determine the mechanical properties of wood through the frequency of vibrations.
Secondly, Prof. Dr Amir Azam Khan presented a seminar on fracture behaviour of materials. Creep and fatigue are the phenomena that lead to deformation and eventually failure of materials. This workshop introduced Larson Miller parameter and S-N curve to analyse creep and fatigue behaviour of the material respectively.
Next, Prof. Dr Ng Chee Khoon presented on mechanical properties and testing of concrete. Among all the mechanical properties, compressive strength and flexural strength of the concrete are the most important aspect. According to Malaysia Standard (MS EN 12390:2012), compressive strength can be tested with a cube or cylinder, however, prism is used to determine concrete’s flexural strength.
Both days of workshop ended with a hands-on session whereby participants were given chance to see the demonstration on tensile test and compression test.

Dr Md. Faruk Hossen is attached with Professor Sinin Hamdan for his Post Doc entitled “Sound quality assessment of wood”. He completed his PhD in 2016 also under the supervision of Prof. Sinin Hamdan from UNIMAS. His research is mostly focused on the relationship between the sound quality based on the timbre attribute of impacted wooden bars and the physical parameters characterizing wood species. For this, a methodology is proposed that associates an analysis-synthesis process and a perceptual classification test. Sounds generated by impacting wooden bars of different species but with the same geometry are recorded and classified. The sounds will be further digitally processed and adjusted to the same pitch before being once again classified. The processing is based on a physical model ensuring the main characteristics of the wood as preserved during the sound transformation. Statistical analysis of both classifications is done to investigate the influence of the pitch and the importance of two timbre descriptors: the frequency-dependent damping and the spectral bandwidth. These descriptors are linked with
physical and anatomical characteristics of wood species, providing new clues in the choice of attractive wood species from a musical point of view. Dr Md. Faruk Hossen has published 8 research publications in scopus indexed journals.
