This artistic period is framed between the XVII century and the first half of XVIII century. Artists showed a realistic and raw point of view.Baroque music is often dated between 1600, year of birth of the opera, and 1750 (death of Johann Sebastian Bach).

Composers sought to provoke emotions and make a show of the musical act. For this purpose, they used contrasting elements (changes in intensity, tempo and rhythm) and very ornate melodies accompanied by a basso continuo played by low instruments like the cello and the double-bass, and polyphonic instruments like the organ or the harpsichord.

4.5. Spanish Baroque

Baroque music in Spain started with the death of king Philip II in 1598 and a period of economic and political crisis of the spanish Empire even though there still was the Spanish golden age in Arts.

Composers stood out in opera and zarzuela, based on texts by playwriterslike Calderón de la Barca.

Instrumental music for organ and keyboard were still important, with Antonio Soler or the italian composer Domenico Scarlatti who included andalusian elements in his music (like the fandango) during his residencein Spain. Likewise there were a lot of music written for guitar by Gaspar Sanz and Santiago de Murcia.
