interred in 1859. One who witnessed the demeanour of the villagers at the funeral of their old pastor said it was inde:ed a

home-bringing . .. It will be seen that he P'lSSCO his life in the quiet lahnnrs of

a village clergyman. Both at Hormeao and at Cuxton the church was daily opened for matins, and he continued this duty without help until a month before his death. It is worth recording that he never preached an old sermon . and that he began on Monday his preparation for the following Sunday. He never failed to visit the school twice a day ulltil the last year of his life, when he contented himself with one visit. No one of his little flock was ever neglected or treated roughly. No wonder that wherever he was he was loved and trusted.

"He was so perfectly simple and humble in all his wal'S that probabl y his rustic parishioners were hardly aware: that their clergyman was a man of great intellectual distinction. Blit so it was; not only was he distinguished in early days bnt his mental activity and love of knowledge never ceased. lie was eager to read all new books of importance, and ill the clerical gatherings of his neighbourhood no one oid more 10 promole animated discussion or contributed more origin<ll lhougllt; and, it may be added, no one was so toit:rant of the opinions of olhers, however different from his own. His temper was always unruffled. It is impossible to characterise: him by any of the usual pa rtisan epithets. At the bottom he was ?.IWil)'S an Evangelical in the true sense of the word; but the teachers whom he most valued in his later days was Canon Licldoll and Canon Gore, especially the latter. His chit'f recreation was 'chess, in which he was a fonllidable opponent. St)ci'tlly he had great charm from his quid humour and perfect simplicity, and many will d eeply regret the cessation of the l\lond,IY gatherings at Cuxton rectory, in the garden or tbe drawingroom, according to the season. Charles Colson was in truth an admirable specimen of a type peculiarly English ; a man

.whose ability might have adorned a higher sphere, devoting

.himself with single·hemted devotion to unoblrusive labours

and the pleasant cares of a family, and finding tile fulkst

sati.faction in those labours. While inferior men thought

themselves injured in that they were not promoted to great

honour he \\as content to labour unremittingly in the. field

where·qocI.lad placed him, caring only to p!ease his Master,"

The Hon Secretaries wish to inform past and present members of the College that they propose this year to limit the number of circulars to 500. The expense of distributing a larger number can only be met by increasing the price of the tickets, and this course they consider undesirable.

Circulars will be sent to all who have been present at any previous dinner and to all other Johnians who intimate a desire to receive them.

At the same time, this must not be taken to imply that the Dinner is restricted to those who receive circulars. It is open to all who are, or have at any

time, been members of the College.

tHE JOHNIAN DINNER, 11)0'2.

!n our May Term number (Eagls xxiii, 317) we mentioned the institution of a dinner to members of the College on the Boards.

The first of these dinners was held on Thursday, June 19th. Invitations were sent out to three groups of J ohnians: (i) a group consisting of those who took the RA. degree in 185 I and earlier; (ii) a group consisting of those who took the B.A. degree in the years 1869 to 1872 inclusive; (iii) a group consisting of those who took the B.A. degree in the years 1883 to 1887 inclusive. The gathering was a very pleasant one. Many who were unable to attend On this occasion expressed a hope that they might have another opportunity of being present.

The Senior Bursar requests us to remind Members of the College of the importance of notifying to him any change of address. All possible care is taken to make the College Address Book an accurate record, but with something like one thousand names on the boards the task is not an easy one. On this occasion several invitations were returned by the Post Office.

The following is a list of those present at the dinner, with the date of the B.A. degree. The names with an asterisk are those resident in the University.

OUR CHRONICLE.

Mt'chael1llas Term 190Z.

In September last the Rev Canon Henry Lowther Clarke (B.A. 1874), Vicar of Huddersfield, was elected Bishop of Melbourne as successor to Dr F. F. Goe. The Times of September 15 in announcing the appointment has the following note:

"The Rev Henry Lowther Clarke is a son of the late Rev \V. Clarke, of Firbank, Westmorland, and was educated at Sedbergh. School. Like many of its ablest pupils he passed to St John'S College, Cambridge, of which he was Scholar, and he graduated' as Seventh vVrangler in 1874. He was ordained Deacon an'd Priest by the Arch bishop of York (Dr Thomson) and was licensed, to the curacy of St John's, I-lull. In !876 the Archbishop. nominated him to the vicarage of Hedon, and in 1883 he became for a short time Assistant Master at St Peter's School, York, In 1884 the Dean and Chapter appointed him to the vicarage of SI Martin, Coney Street, York. He made a considerable mark as Vicar of Dewsbury-a post which Bishop Walsham Ho\", conferred on him in I 890 , and only a few months ago became Vicar of Huddersfield. He has been an Honorary Canon of Wakefield Cathedral since 1893, and is Proctor in Convocationfor the clergy of the Huddersfield Archdeaconry.

,. There is no doubt that the electors have made a good' choice. Canon Lowther Clarke is a Moderate Churchman. The late Bishop Perry, if he had been alive to take his wonted part in the selection of the Melbourne Bishop, would perhaps have worked for a more decidedly Evangelical nomination, and the new Bishop is nearer in Cburchmanship to Bishop MoorhOllse than to Bishop Goe. But he takes a keen interest in education, having been for some years a member of the examining board of training colleges, and this will stand him in good stead as an Australian Bishop.

"Yesterday morning, after the ordinary service at St Peter's Church, Huddersfield, Canon Lowther Clarke announced that he had been offered the Bishopric and had consulted with trusted friencls. He sent on Saturday his final answer that he \V.ould go, and be asked the congregation to believe that only

In 1887 and 1888, !VIr Marriott acted as Couhsel for the ex-Khedive Ismail Pasha, and other members of his family, in settling their claims against the Egyptian Government. It has been stated that he received the sum of £30,000 in fees for his services on this occasion. He was less successful in prosecuting the claims of Zobehr Pasha, the Soudanese slave-trader. In 1888 Mr Maniott received the honour of Knighthood.

In 1895 he retired from Parliament. He then tried to recover some of his practice in compensation cases and appeared at the Parliamentary Bar. But it was too late, and in an evil hOllr he was tempted east of Temple Bar to make money. His speculations were unfortunate, and his last appearance in an English Court is said to have been on 3 May 1899 as a claimant of £ 3Cl,OOO against the estate of Mr Hooley; a judgment for £ 5000 and costs was entered in his favour. Finally he transferred his attention to South Africa, where he acted as political' acIviser to the Dale Lace party in opposition to Lord Milner's policy. I,alterly he resided at J ohannesberg. In many waysit was a sad close to a strenuous and successful career.

Sir William Marriott had very considerable literary and critical powers. In his younger days he was a frequent contributor to the daily and weekly press, and for a long time' articles by him appeared in the monthly magazines. With all his cynicism he was a kind-hearted man. He was perpetually guilty of the very common error of making himself out to be worse than he was. His changes of profession and political faith gave many opportunities to the detractor, and his scornful retorts were more effective at the moment than judicious in his own interest.

Sir WilJiam Marriolt married in 1872 Charlotte Louisa, daughter of the Idle Captain Tennant R.N., of Needwood House, Hants.

THE JOHNIAN DINNER, 1903.

one of the town or county, and made all the pos/-mor/em examinations.

Dr Humphry, then Professor of Anatomy, availed himself of

Dr Carver's services as Demonstrator of Anatomy, thus bringing him in touch with University students. Moreover, he became a member of St John's College, and graduated in 1858, proceeding later to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Medicine. In 1866 he was induced to move to Huntingdon by the offer of a partnership, and there became Surgeon to the County Hospital. His health, however, broke down four years later, and, after a voyage round the world, he returned to Cambridge. A few years after his second start there he married Miss Emily Grace Day, who survives him, and was elected to a vacancy at Addenbrooke's.

On the honorary staff of Addenbroolce's Hospital, with Humphry as his brilliant colleague, Dr Carver held for many years a position requiring great industry, skill, and tact. He was a most cautious and painstaking operator, and was devoted heart and soul to his patients' welfare. Rich and poor alike had Dr Carver's ungrudging care. His connexion with tbe hospital at Cambridge lasted during nearly half a century, and he became wc1l known and trusted in the town, county, and University, where he had many friends and filled many offices. He Wi\S

surgeon to the University Rifle Volunteer Corps, a FellolV of the Philosophical SOl.:iety, and a member of the Antiquarian Society.

He was an original member of the Cambridge Medical Society at .its foundation in 1880, and was President seven years later. It was not until 1898 that Dr Carver finally gave up practice. and he then still felt sufficiently young, at the age of 76. to offer his services for home duty when the war broke out Cl

year later. After his retirement he moved to Kent, but soon returned to Cambridgeshire, and made a home at Chestertoll. This summer, however, he determined to move to Torquay, ,vhere his son practises, and there his busy and useful life ended. For so sl:ccessful a man he was of a singularly retiring disposition, and wrote but little. A few papers in the Jourllal o.f Anatomy and PhYS1'ology and in the medical

' journals are all that

remain to represent the great amount of experience which he so seldom expressed in literary work. Quietly and usefully he toiled, feeling that ,. to travel hopefully is better than to anive, and the greatest success is to labour."

114 01Jtlu,7?'Y, Corinthian Yacht Club as well as of the Cruising Club at Cam_ bridge ; and he had his own racing yacht upon. the Orwell. On Monday, August 7, a gusty day with squalls from the S.S.W., he went for a cruise down the river, accompanied by three of his friends. All went well with the boat until it was opposite the Cat House Buoy, about 5 miles from I pswich , in a reach of the river where accidents have occurred before, owing to the sudden squalls which come down in windy weather from the wooded banks at Wolverstone. The yacht was beating down the river agaimt a strong flood-tide, when, without warning, a gust came down the opening between the trees, and threw her over on to her beam ends, when she filled with water alld sallk like a stone . Two of the occllpallts of the boat managed to keep afloat ulItil they were picked up, but White, though an excellent swimmtr, lost his life in tryi ng to save one of the boys .

He was laid to rest in Chelmondiston Churchyard, not far from the scene of the accident, and within sight and sound of the river on which he had spent so many happy hours. His memory will be cherished among us as that of one who served his country in his day and generation, and yieldecl up a life which the war had spared, in answer to the call which bade him think not of himself but of another.

A poem revealing his love for the river, which was so fatal to him, was found among his papers after his death, and is printed on another page.

suffered to corrupt the world. The Diocesan Mission has invented no catchwords or watchwords for esoteric use. As far as possible, the aim kept steadily in view is the rousing of dormant religious life, the awakening to spiritual responsibilities and blessings of the aimless, the careless, the ungodly, the general uplifting of the level of Church life.

To this work Canon Atherton gave himself with conspicuous success. In it he lived and moved. His next highest ambition was to be a good colleague. He gave the pledge of his love to his brethren when he came, they took it, and he redeemed it. He has been the teacher of multitudes, the friend and helper of other missioners of more conspicuous names than his, but none on the whole more competent, few experienced, as tactful, or as wise.
