Thank you for purchasing your SecurityGuardII intruder alarm system. SecurityGuardII is arevolutionary new radio based alarm system which has been built to the highest quality standards possible

and complies with the Australian Standard for Intruder Alarm systems AS2201, United Kingdom Standard

BS4737 & BS6799 and Canada C22.2 CSAN0 205-M-1983

SecurityGuardII has been designed specifically to keep your family, yourself and your valuables under constantguard and give you peace of mind for their safety. SecurityGuardII works tirelessly 24 Hours a day whether youare at home or away protecting the things that you value the most.

SecurityGuard is the result of many years of experience and research in the personal and home securityindustry. The system is operated very easily using the pocket size Radio Key and the friendly seven segmentdisplay but SecurityGuard’s apparent simplicity belies the powerful, sophisticated electronic system whichprovides features not found on many systems. Testament to the sophistication and innovative design ofSecurityGuardII was the awarding of the coveted Australian Design Award to SecurityGuard in 1992 and againin 1996.

SecurityGuardII is unobtrusive and stylish yet is very robust being made of an extremely tough polycarbonate. When positioned correctly SecurityGuard’s inbuilt infra-red movement detector will detect movement in anarea of up to 12 metres x 12 metres. Research has shown that most intruders are frightened off once they realisethey have been detected. For this reason, SecurityGuard has been designed with a very loud siren to scareintruders and alert your neighbours.

Used and maintained correctly SecurityGuardII will provide you with years of trouble free operation. We areconfident in predicting that you will be so impressed by your SecurityGuardII alarm system that you will wantto recommend one to your friends and family.

The microcomputer based SecurityGuard forms the heart ofyour security system. Your Radio Key is a pocket sized devicewhich transmits an encoded radio signal to tell theSecurityGuard to go into one of three operating modes; Arm,Disarm or Home. Additionally the Radio Key can tell theSecurityGuard to create an Emergency Alarm at any time.

Additional detection devices called Passive Infra-RedDetectors (or P.I.R.s for short) can detect the movement of anintruder by sensing their body heat. P.I.R.s are used to covervarious critical areas of your premises where an intruder mightenter or trespass and will transmit an encoded radio signal totell SecurityGuard that there is movement present.

Reed Switches are detection devices which attach to doorsand windows and are used to detect if a door or window hasopened. A Reed Switch is made up of two parts; A Magnetwhich normally attaches to the moving portion of the door orwindow and a Reed which detects the presence or absence ofthe magnet. The Reed Switch transmits an encoded radiosignal to tell SecurityGuard that a door or window has beenopened.

Your SecurityGuard is said to be Armed or on when it allowsall P.I.R. and Reed Switches to cause a full Alarm. YourSecurityGuard is said to be in Home mode when it allows onlyselected P.I.R. or Reed Switches to cause an Alarm. This isnormally the case when you are home and wish to have partof your alarm active and part of it inactive to allow freedom ofmovement in that area. At all other times your SecurityGuard issaid to be Disarmed or off when it does not allow any P.I.R. andReed Switches to cause a full alarm.

When leaving your premises Arm your SecurityGuard usingyour Radio Key to enable it to detect intruders and generate analarm. SecurityGuard will ignore detection devices for the ExitTime to enable you to depart your premises without triggeringan alarm.

When you enter the premises the SecurityGuard will delay analarm for a short Entry Time. Failure to Disarm SecurityGuardbefore this time will cause an alarm. Alternatively you canDisarm from outside the premises in which case no Entry Timeis required.

An Alarm will cause the SecurityGuard Siren and ExternalSiren to sound. The Sirens will sound for up to 5 minutes unlessa Disarm signal is received from a Radio Key in which case theSiren will stop immediately. An optional Strobe Light will flashon the External Siren cover as a visible warning of an Alarmand continue flashing for one hour.

The External Siren has an inbuilt Tamper Switch which willcause an Alarm if an unauthorised attempt is made todisconnect the Siren.

G L O S S A R Y O F T E R M I N O L O G Y

An Emergency Alarm or Panic can be created by pressing theside lever on any Radio Key for 2 seconds, an EmergencyAlarm will sound the sirens in the same manner that a normalAlarm does. An Emergency Alarm can be used to scareintruders or alert friends or neighbours.

The SecurityGuard is fitted with a Rechargeable Battery whichwill normally run SecurityGuard for around 3 to 4 monthsbefore requiring recharging. A Battery Charger is providedwhich plugs into the SecurityGuard and plugs into a standardpower point to recharge your battery as required.

The SecurityGuard displays all information by way of its StatusDisplay. The Status Display is a very bright, red, dual 7segment display which it can be seen from anywhere in thesame room as the SecurityGuard and will display conditionssuch as status (Armed, Disarmed etc.) and warnings such asLow Battery etc.

At other times your SecurityGuard may have beenprogrammed for one or more Reed Switches or P.I.R.Detectors sound a Chime warning. A Chime warning has alower priority than an Alarm and therefore the SecurityGuardwill only sound a series of beeps from it’s siren. Chime can beused for things such as front door alarms, pool gates, studiesetc.

LOW BATTERY The Red Alarm Light will change from a steady light to aflashing light when the battery is low. SecurityGuard will warnyou when the battery is low and needs replacing. You shouldreplace the battery as soon as possible after the warning.

The PIR uses a special 9 Volt Lithium battery which shouldprovide a battery life of between 2 and 3 years. We recommendyou only use a Lithium battery as a replacement. The life ofother types of batteries such as Alkaline is several times lessthan a Lithium.

PIR detectors are able to sense movement by detecting smallchanges of Infra-red energy in the area that they are lookingat. PIR detectors use special filters which are tuned to theInfra-red energy produced by human beings, they useadvanced lenses to gather the Infra-red energy in a room andfocus it back to a sensor inside the unit.

S L E E P M O D EYour PIR detectors are always active by scanning their area formovement. To conserve battery life and to limit unwanted radiotransmissions the PIR waits until all movement in the room hasceased for at least 4 minutes before it transmits an alarmmessage to the SecurityGuard. Thus constant movement in aroom will not cause constant alarm messages to be sent andbattery power is conserved.

Note - Although an alarm message is sent by the PIR, theSecurityGuard determines if it should sound a siren or notdepending on whether it is Armed or Disarmed.

W A R N I N GInfra-red energy will not pass through solid objects. Do not place furniture etc. in front of the PIR.

Do not place heaters or similar devices close to your PIR sensors, as the heat generates Infra-red energy and maycause false alarms when you have ARMED your SecurityGuard.

Reed switches are able to detect the opening of doors andwindows by detecting the presence or absence of a magnet. The Reed Switch is made up of two pieces; A magnet whichnormally is placed on the moving part of a door or window andthe Reed which is housed inside the main unit.

Your Reed Switch is always active checking to see if the dooror window that it is installed on has opened. When the ReedSwitch senses an opening it transmits a coded Alarm messageback to Securityguard and Securityguard then determineswhat it should do with the message i.e. It may choose to soundan Alarm or sound a Chime depending on whether it is Armed,Disarmed or in Home mode.

The Reed switch will transmit an Alarm message to tellSecurityguard when a door or window is opened and againwhen it is closed.

N O T EThe Battery life of your Reed Switch is directly related to the number of times that it is opened and closed.

For the Shock Reed the Battery will last about 3 years if the Reed Switch is opened and closed approx 25000 timesor about 24 times a day and about 2 years if the Reed Switch is opened and closed about 35 times a day.

The Mini Reed battery will last about three years if it is activated twice a day. Unnecessary opening and closinga window or door on which the Reed Switch is installed will diminish the battery life.

Your SecurityGuard has a special inbuilt feature which alwaysensures that your optional detection devices (PIRs and ReedSwitches) are operating correctly and sending alarmmessages as they are triggered.

Your SecurityGuard is constantly monitoring the alarmmessages sent by your PIR and Reed Switch detectors andexpects to receive messages on a regular basis, caused byyour normal day to day activities. Of course SecurityGuarddecides if it will create an alarm from those “alarm” messagesdepending on whether it is Armed or not.

However if SecurityGuard does not receive an alarm messagefrom each one of the your additional detectors on a regularbasis, SecurityGuard will warn you when you Disarm bysounding a series of double beeps for 3 seconds and flash thenumber of the suspect detector along with on it’sdisplay for 5 minutes.( As with all SecurityGuard displays you can cancel the displaybefore 5 minutes by pressing OFF on any Radio Key).

ExampleIf your PIR number 2 has not regularly alarmed thenSecurityGuard will flash and beep a series of doublebeeps for 3 seconds when you Disarm.

What you Should doIf you receive this warning from adetector that you know should havetriggered recently, then before you doanything else you should test thedetector, if it is still not working youshould replace the battery and test thedetector as described in the PIR or

Reed Switch Low Battery sections of this manual.

If you still have a problem you should contact the servicenumber you were provided with at the time of installation.

If thisoccurs you should check your phone line connection to makesure the dialler has not been unplugged otherwise you shouldcontact your nearest Service Centre immediately.

Your SecurityGuard allows for each of it’s detectors D1 to D8to operate in various modes to suit your particular needs. Yourinstaller has programmed these for you at installation. Themore commonly used of those have been described earlier inthis manual e.g. Alarm when Armed, Alarm when Home etc.

The way the detector has been setup is summarised on theback page of this manual under the column headed “Mode”.

Two of the least used setups or “Modes” of operation notdescribed earlier in the manual are described below, they areChime and Fire.

Chime mode allows a Detector tosound a single pleasant two tonewarning beep similar to adoorbell if the detector is triggeredwhen your alarm is Disarmed. This may be useful if you want awarning if someone has entered orleft a room without causing a fullalarm while you are home e.g. Youwant to know if the children havegone into the study, or you want toknow if the children have gone into

the backyard (particularly if you have a pool).A Chime Mode detector if triggered will flash the display with it’snumber as well as an to show which detector caused thealarm.

We strongly suggest that you should carry out a full test of your alarm system at a minimum 6 monthly interval.

You should Arm your SecurityGuard and test that each of yourPIR and Reed Switch detectors triggers an alarm asprogrammed. A test procedure is described for each detectorin the replacing batteries section of this manual.

You could also check that your sirens are fully functional bytriggering an Emergency alarm from your Radio Key.

C L E A N I N G

Do not clean SecurityGuard with solvents like benzine orthinners and do not use commercial spray pack cleaners as thechemicals may attack the polycarbonate housing ofSecurityGuard.

A light dusting and if necessary warmsoapy water should only be used forcleaning.

The same applies for your Radio Key,PIR and Reed Switch housings.

I N S E C T S

Take particular care that insects like spiders and moths arenot forming webs or similar around any of the PIR detectors

including SecurityGuards inbuiltdetector. Insects can cause falsealarms. Brush away any spider websand if insects appear to be a problemspray around the detector with asurface insect spray.

Do Not Spray Directly Onto TheDetector or Lens Area !
