Sponsors Keynote session

Kicking off with a bang! European Utility Week 2013 kicked off with a thought provoking keynote session encouraging delegates to collaborate in order to create synergies within the industry and secure energy supplies for future generations.

As the industry is entering one of the most interesting periods in it’s history, the evolution of the smart energy ecosystem requiring a profound mind shift, a growing emphasis is now being placed on collaboration, interoperability, shared targets and joint ambitions. These buzzwords formed the overall theme for this year’s conference and key-note session. The essence of the theme was consolidated into the line: ‘’pulling in one direction”.

Amongst the speaking highlights was a presentation from Peter Economides, marketing guru who has been involved in many successful brand developments including Apple. Peter’s main message was based upon the importance of giving the customer value in a way that connects with them.

The big energy companies should realize that their customers have a different mind set. “People don’t think of energy until they don’t have it”, Economides stated. The compelling presentation found strong appeal and prompted many questions from audience members.

Focus on Smart T&D Infrastructures

Smart Transmission and Distribution Infrastructures, so long a staple of our show, continues to boast a top quality speaker line up presenting best practice from acrossEurope’s T&D sector.

Formatted by the European Utility Week steering committee, the programme this year covereda multitude of themes ranging from balancing markets, microgrids, commercial and industrial demand response and future-proof grid design to name but a few.

Also covered within this stream was the extremely well attended smart grid security programme,a theme which has been assuming increasing importance since the early evolution of smart grid technologies. Here key utilities from across Europe showcased their experiences in combating this looming threat. Together the two programmes attracted high praise from delegates.

Focus on Renewable Integration & Storage

Renewable Energy Integration and Storage event gets thumbs up!

The Renewable Energy Integration and Storage track of European Utility Week 2013 surpassed even the highest expectations! The overall consensus among the participants was that the three day conference and exhibition had provided them with a vital insight into the latest renewable integration policies and activities, innovative project case studies and breakthroughenergy storage technologies and applications.

The two track conference programme provided valuable resources and networking opportunities to identify challenges, share experiences and evaluate possible solutions. The immediate feedback is that it had been a valuable eye-opener in gaining knowledge about new projects and international developments.

Interactive discussion sessions on industry challenges and business models during the World Café Session attracted a highly motivated and participative audience.

On the exhibition floor

Apart from 6 Renewable Integration and Storage sessions in the Innovation & Technology Programme on the exhibition floor, European Utility Week drilled down on the innovations currently taking place in the E-mobility space showcased at E-mobility Park. Host Utility Alliander and partners gave an insight in the status of EV landscape in Holland and the possibilities for the future.

Congratulations on setting up last week’s conferences. I am impressed at how Synergy has “put itself on the map” in just one shot in the -small- RES integration and storage communities after last week’s conference.Michael Salomon, CEO and Founder, Clean Horizon Consulting, France

Focus on Smart Metering ICT & Data Management

The ICT and Data Management and Smart Metering tracks this year attracted recordinterest from attendees and sponsors - reflecting the sustained importance of thesesectors in cementing the transformation to a smart grid.

With effective management of ‘Big Data’ still proving elusive to many, much of the debate naturally focused on this theme. Meanwhile, Smart Metering continued to demonstrate its coreappeal with barely a vacant seat throughout the two day conference.

Hosted in part by ESMIG, we were able to draw on top level speakers from across the EuropeanCommission, leading utilities currently undertaking roll-outs and representation from the top meter providers. We heard feedback from a number of key countries - Germany included - on their future plans for smart meter roll outs and how Japan is adapting to new modes and constraints within generation and distribution post Fukushima.

Speaker representation across the two tracks as always was high, with participation from company CEOs, European Commission representatives, not to mention some of the leading intellectual minds pioneering developments in this space.

On the exhibition floor

Parallel to the conference programme offering knowledge on a more strategic level, the 3-day Innovation & Technology Programme on the exhibition floor was set-up to further stimulate the exchange of knowledge at a more technical level and give insight into new commercial opportunities.

Nearly 2000 people participated in one of 60 free-to-attend technical sessions and round table discussions. Divided over 3 Innovation and Technology platforms, these were the central meeting, learning and networking points on the exhibition floor.

I enjoyed very much the discussions and praise the success of the eventManuel Sánchez Jiménez, Team Leader Smart Grids, European Commission

Focus on Smart Homes & End-User Engagement

A significant development reflecting progress in the market, was the interest levels in the smart homes and end user engagement tracks were higher this year than ever before.

Although engagement of the end-user by utilities has been much derided over the years, there is clearly strong interest in making improvements here.

On both Smart Home and End-User Engagement tracks utility speaker representation was very strong, with some exciting new developments being announced regarding new pricing features on both tracks. Elsewhere we heard some very interesting presentations from telcos as these companies become integrated into, and drivers of, bundled consumer packages featuring home energy management. At the conclusion of these two sessions, there seemed a tangible sense that the customer – and their attendant interests and desires – now features much more highly into the product development phase, certainly of the utilities.

On the exhibition floor

The technical programme on the show floor offered 10 free-to-attend sessions on Smart Homes & End-User Engagement.

One of the high-lights of the programme was the well-attended Round Table discussion led by Opower. The inter-active session on how to build the next generation customer experience touched upon hot to increase business value through stronger customer relations.

Other topics in the onsite Technical Programme:• Understanding and entering the Smart Home market• Integrating Smart Home into existing services• Practical insights into opportunities for new and improved customer loyalty
