With a rich tradition of love and care, Fronditha Care has been advocating care for the elderly since 1977 and providing aged care services for elders and their families in Australia since 1983. Our Bounty of Care ethos drives us to go beyond physical and health needs to embrace a culturally rich environment that inspires celebration, fosters belonging and enhances wellbeing.

Our Values

With exceptional residential facilities and community services, we provide choices and tailored care plans to empower elders to live the way they want, and enjoy what they love.

Our mantra is instilled in everything we do:

• Love and care for our elders.• Respect and value we have for our colleagues.• Joy and connection we celebrate with our communities.• Recognising the values of cultural, spiritual and emotional needs.• Empowering elders to live the way they want, enjoying what they love.• A ripple effect that starts with us, and flows through our elders, their

families into the community and industry. • Leading by example to inspire a better world.

President’s Report

In 2017, Fronditha Care celebrated 40 years since a visionary group of founders and volunteers started a humble charity with the lofty aim of looking after elderly Greek-speaking people. Thanks to those trailblazers, Fronditha Care is now an industry leader that looks after approximately 450 people in its five nursing homes and more than 2,000 people in the community.

On 27 May this year, Fronditha Care celebrated 40 years of service to the community in the presence of the Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health, The Hon. Ken Wyatt AM, MP, and other distinguished guests, at a Gala Dinner at the magnificent Glasshouse at the old Olympic swimming pool complex. The event highlighted and celebrated the success of Fronditha Care, the challenges faced by our volunteers and the contributions that Fronditha Care has made to the community. Thank you to everybody who attended, in particular to our sponsors who supported us on this important occasion.

Fronditha Care’s signature achievement in this 40th Anniversary year has been the official opening of Clayton’s Steyi facility. A large gathering of members and donors gathered on 26 February 2017 for the official opening in the presence of Julia Banks MP, Member for Chisholm in the Federal Parliament. We now look forward to the completion in October 2017 of Stage 2 (Pronia) of the Clayton redevelopment. Plans have also been submitted to the City of Kingston to rebuild Galini (Stage 3) as a state of the art Memory Support Unit which we hope will be available to serve the elderly by the end of 2018.

At Templestowe (Storgi), the Board has approved a significant refurbishment to ensure that it remains a high-quality facility. We have also purchased a new bus for resident excursions thanks to the Templestowe Auxiliary and their outstanding fundraising efforts.

At St Albans (Thalpori), the Board has approved a major redevelopment of the facility. This was recently given a significant boost with the Federal Government allocating a further 30 beds. This will allow us to build a brand new, modern 92-bed aged care residential facility. We plan to commence this $16 million project as soon as the plans are approved by the City of Brimbank.

In Newcastle, we completed our capital works program installing a new lift to better allow residents to move around, installing a new generator to meet the challenges of the weather on the NSW Central Coast, and building a covered walkway to allow residents better access the Hippocrates activities centre. I extend my thanks to the Hippocrates Association for their ongoing support of Fronditha Care. It was a great pleasure to be in Newcastle in May and join in the celebrations of the 25th Anniversary Hippocrates Aged Care Persons Association Gala Dinner.

At Thornbury (Anesi), in October this year we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of serving the elderly in the northern Melbourne metropolitan region. As Anesi has been running at full capacity, an extension of our kitchen was approved by the Board this year.

The greatest asset of Fronditha Care is its people: the staff and volunteers who work passionately and beyond the call of duty to ensure that our elderly receive quality services in an environment that respects their dignity and honours their heritage. I want to thank all our volunteers for their great work this year, and to welcome the 22 new volunteers that have joined us.

As I mentioned, this year has been one of celebration for Fronditha Care, commemorating our 40th Anniversary. I was therefore privileged at the Gala Dinner to announce the establishment of the Anna Matthews OAM Scholarship in memory of our late tireless volunteer. The Scholarship will provide financial support to postgraduate students by assisting research projects that contribute to the wellbeing and care of our ageing community.

The Board expresses its gratitude to the volunteers of the Templestowe, Thornbury, and St Albans Auxiliaries and the Hippocrates Association for their ongoing support. The various fundraising events they organised have raised much needed funds to support our mission.

I am grateful to our CEO, Mr. George Lekakis AO, his executive team and his dedicated staff for their contribution to Fronditha Care and for ensuring that all our accreditation standards and strategic objectives are met. Their commitment, professionalism, and willingness to embrace opportunities resulted in another excellent year, achieving many important program and budget outcomes.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the work and commitment of the Board of Directors and thank them for their dedication and professionalism. I would like to acknowledge, in particular, the contribution of Dr Olga Kanitsaki AM who retired this past year.

As a charity, any surpluses are reinvested in the organisation to improve the lives of all in our care. This year the Board signed off on an ambitious Strategic Plan that we trust will grow our organisation so that we can continue to meet the growing demands of our community. It promises to be a very exciting period ahead for our organisation. I know you will be with us going forward.

The 2016-2017 financial year has been a year of success. Fronditha Care opened its new 5 star residential aged care facility at Clayton South, STEYI, and embarked on a well planned strategy for increasing the provision of community services to the community. In the year that passed the management of Fronditha Care, in cooperation with the Board of Directors, also set forward the new Strategic Plan for the period 2017-2020, which will see the realisation of many new initiatives, acquisitions and new innovative projects.

The year that passed was also dedicated towards recognising Fronditha Care’s 40 years of service which, in my view, made an outstanding contribution to the lives of our elderly. The combined efforts of our volunteers and staff over four decades have developed an organisation for which we can all be proud.

In the year that passed, our five residential care facilities enjoyed full-occupancy as demand for residential care substantially increased in the community. At the beginning of the financial year, we commissioned the new STEYI (Clayton) aged care residential facility, with ample five star hotel offerings and services. We subsequently embarked on Stage II of the redevelopment of PRONIA (Clayton) at the estimated building cost of $5.6 million. In the period under review, the Board of Directors also decided to undertake a reconstruction of GALINI which will commence in January 2018. This substantial investment will allow for the provision of residential services to the community for the next four decades.

An exciting initiative to redevelop the THALPORI (St Albans) facility was also initiated in the reporting period. It was pleasing to receive an additional 30 bed boost by the Federal Government allowing us to build a new 92 bed facility at the Furlong Rd, St Albans site. The estimated cost for this new initiative will be budgeted for $16 million.

At Newcastle, we completed the second lift and walkway extension to the HIPPOCRATES facility and installed a generator, ensuring an effective response to power failures and climatic events. With respect to all our other facilities, management also embarked upon a major refurbishment program to prepare for future accreditation which will commence in earnest next year.

We also implemented an exciting iCare Health software system within all of our residential facilities. The internet cloud based system provides carers and nurses with a complete and detailed picture of the residents’ current state of health. The medication management system has reduced the risk of medication errors and shortened medication rounds, enabling staff to spend more quality time with the residents.

After Telstra Health’s successful iCare roll out in Fronditha Care’s residential care facilities, the system was made available to the Community Services Department for use in our provision of home care packages and community services.

One of the most exciting developments in the reporting period was Fronditha Care’s preparation and roll-out for the implementation of the new Home Care Packages arrangements. We commenced with a coordinated advertising campaign and appointed two Care Consultants to liaise with and directly support the elderly. In this year of transition to the new arrangements, the community services staff demonstrated resilience and adapted to the changes and the transition arrangements.

Fronditha Care is now able to provide culturally specific Home Care services to many more elderly in the community as a result. I would like to commend all the Community Services staff for their efforts and in making this program exciting and successful.

Our Public Affairs department embarked upon a well planned celebration of our 40th Anniversary which included an impressive Gala dinner at The Glasshouse with many members and supporters in attendance. We also welcomed the Hon. Ken Wyatt AM MP, Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health to the event and his expression of support for Fronditha Care’s work was an endorsement of our combined efforts.

Regular weekly updates to the community about Fronditha Care’s work in the Greek papers, social media and a successful radio program on 3XY Greek media every Monday morning has ensured that we inform and educate our community and stakeholders. We also embarked in a rebranding of Fronditha Care to modernise our image and reposition the organisation as a leading culturally specific aged care provider.

Through the development of our Strategic Plan we also embarked on a planned program of future acquisitions in both Victoria and interstate and details of these will be made known to the community in the next financial year. Our Volunteer Program and Community Visitation Scheme has also continued to receive financial support from the Federal Government. I would also like to welcome our 31 new volunteers who have joined Fronditha Care this year. Their contributions are highly valued and much appreciated by every one in our organisation.

This year our management team also ensured that we continued to lead as an employer of first choice for 600 full and part-time staff. The findings of this year’s staff survey provided further evidence that Fronditha Care staff continue to enjoy high satisfaction and engagement and feel supported to undertake their work. Our Labour Agreement with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has also enabled us to increase the number of Greek speaking care staff across all of our programs. We nominated 29 new Greek speaking personal care workers in the reporting period.

Staff development and training also remained a key priority with extensive training courses being undertaken. We continued with our induction program and provided further leadership training to a new group of emerging leaders at Fronditha Care. In relation to our financial affairs, our budgeted targets were met during the reporting period. We also achieved an ahead of budget surplus before depreciation and finance of $339, 924 and met all our prudential obligations in the financial year. Our net asset value also exceeded $63 million.

I wish to thank all of our staff at Fronditha Care. They are wonderful people who contribute to the wellbeing of the people in our care and contribute greatly to the continued success of our organisation. I also wish to thank the Board of Directors and members of Fronditha Care for their dedication and services to the organisation and the support they have provided to the office of the CEO.The 2016-2017 year was another successful year for Fronditha Care and I am very proud of my staff and their efforts which allowed for the continued success of our wonderful organisation.

Fronditha Care launchedTelstra Health - iCare

Highlights

Since the establishment of Fronditha Care 40 years ago, the key objective of the organisation remains the provision of high quality aged care services to the elderly in our community. Fronditha Care has embraced technological innovation in the field of aged care to facilitate the effective operation of its residential and community services.

Telstra Health, more commonly known as iCare, is the next step that Fronditha Care has adopted towards this end. During the reporting period, the organisation has invested over $500,000 to implement the Telstra Health software system within all of its residential care facilities. The internet cloud based system provides carers and nurses with a complete and detailed picture of residents’ current state of health. The medication management system has reduced the risk of medication errors and shortened medication rounds, enabling staff to spend more quality time with residents. Furthermore, the system has accorded a level of flexibility to meet and manage the residents care needs, which translates to what is ultimately our main objective, the provision of better care.

After Telstra Health’s successful roll out in Fronditha Care’s residential care facilities, the system is to be made available to the Community Services department for use in our provision of home care packages and community services.

Telstra Health was officially launched on 19 May 2017 with representatives of the Board of Directors and Telstra Health.

“To purchase this system, we spent over $500,000. However, this system focuses on the health of the elderly, so there was no hesitation on our end”, Treasurer Jacob Fronistas stated during the official launch of Telstra Health - iCare.

Fronditha Care officially opens STEYIWith a great sense of accomplishment and celebration, Fronditha Care’s reconstructed STEYI residential facility (58 beds) was officially opened by the Hon. Julia Banks (Member for Chisholm, representing the Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health), and in attendance were the Hon. Hong Lim (Member for Clarinda, Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs) and Ms. Christina Simantiraki (Consul General of Greece in Melbourne).

In addition to the plaque marking the official opening of STEYI, another two honorary plaques were unveiled in honour of our esteemed donors Nick and Anna Vournazos, who have donated $2,000,000 to Fronditha Care, and Dimitrios and Spiridoula Floratos, who have donated $100,000 towards the STEYI redevelopment. The event was also attended by Councillors Tamsin Bearsley (City of Kingston), Pang Choi and Theo Zographos (City of Monash).

Mr. Nick Thodos, President of Fronditha Care, acknowledged the contributions of the organisation’s pioneers, members, volunteers, staff and donors, whose efforts and contributions have culminated in the building of the new STEYI. This new building symbolises the way forward for the organisation with its ultra modern amenities, high standard of care and level of luxury.

In 1989, Fronditha Care built STEYI (30 beds), which was the first nursing home in Victoria to cater to the health care, cultural and spiritual needs of the Greek speaking elderly migrants in the community. Over the years, the needs of the community dramatically increased and the need for high quality care persisted. As a result of this, the Fronditha Care Board of Directors and management decided to demolish the original facility and rebuild a new contemporary facility in July 2016, marking a milestone in the organisation’s history, and also in the standard of provision of culturally specific residential aged care in the aged care industry.

The Hon. Julia Banks, MP, in an emotional speech, stated: “Fronditha Care has a special place in the heart of Australia and Greek Australian elderly people. The beauty of Fronditha Care is that it is a home away from home. Particularly in their older age, it is very important to make people feel comfortable and warm and in a secure and loving environment , and that is an intrinsic part of Greek culture and that is why Fronditha Care is an intrinsic part of Australia and our aged population.”

The Hon. Hong Lim, MP, was noticeably impressed by the new palatial five star residential facility stating: “As the local Member for Clarinda, I am very proud of your achievement.“ He further humorously added, “The Chinese community is 6 to 7 times larger than the Greek community but they have nothing that compares to this. Now that I have come and I have seen, we want to copy you.”

Redevelopment ProgramFronditha Care is an organisation that strives to meet the demand of aged care services in the community and has therefore embarked upon an ambitious redevelopment program. The current phase of this program is the reconstruction of our three residential care facilities in Clayton. Stage I began in 2014 with the demolition of the original STEYI facility which was completed in July 2016. This modern contemporary facility has set a new luxury standard of accommodation provision by Fronditha Care, which will be replicated in all new residential care facilities that the organisation will construct into the future. The total costs of the building of 150 beds is estimated at approximately $30 million and as at 30 June 2017 approximately $19,172,000 has been spent.

Stage II saw the demolition and reconstruction of our first residential facility PRONIA which opened in 1983. Building works for the redevelopment of PRONIA were ongoing throughout the reporting period, commencing in July 2016 with completion expected in October 2017. The new facility will not only provide the same luxury standard of accommodation and high quality of care as STEYI, but will also host our Planned Activity Program (PAG) in the modern Zissis Dardalis Centre, a centre designated for activities to promote active ageing for the elderly in our community.

Stage III of our Clayton reconstruction program will see the redevelopment of our GALINI facility, dedicated to the care of the elderly with severe dementia. Plans have been approved by the City of Kingston and works are expected to commence in early 2018. With the completion of GALINI, Fronditha Care will provide residential care to 150 elders in Melbourne’s south eastern region.

After the announcement by the Federal Government in May 2017 of the allocation of an additional 30 dementia specific beds in Melbourne’s western metropolitan region to Fronditha Care, we have decided to construct a new 92 bed facility in St Albans to also incorporate our existing 60 beds. After consultation with consultants from Alzheimer’s Australia, we are currently in the process of finalising the design of the new facility with our assigned architects the De Nova Group. Fronditha Care will be aiming to submit the final plans for approval to the City of Brimbank by October 2017.

Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA) & Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Awards

Industry and State recognition for Fronditha Care’s volunteers

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Management of Fronditha Care, we would like to express our congratulations to two long term volunteers of Fronditha Care, Mr. Tassos Bardakos and Mr. Dinos Diamantopoulos.

On 26 September 2016, Tassos was awarded the distinguished ACSA 2016 Volunteer of the Year Award and on 4 December 2016, he received one of the Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champions Awards.

Tassos has been a volunteer at Thornbury since 1999. He was introduced to Fronditha Care and its work as a daily visitor of his mother-in-law, who was a resident of our ANESI facility in Thornbury. After her passing, Tassos felt it to be a natural progression from visiting as a family member, to becoming a committed volunteer.

Tassos visits ANESI every day, without fail, including weekends. What is noted is that he knows all residents by name and he greets them individually. He also knows their personal stories and conditions, and enquires after their wellbeing.

During both Awards ceremonies, Tassos stated that as a volunteer he not only gives, but also receives a lot of love from the elderly.

Another Fronditha Care volunteer, Dinos Diamantopoulos, also received the ACSA 2016 Volunteer Finalist Certificate, as recognition for his wonderful contribution to STORGI, Templestowe. Dinos, amongst other initiatives, drives the bus of STORGI and uses his community network to organise the attendance and participation of our residents at various Greek social clubs.

Congratulations Tassos and Dinos and we wish all the very best to you and your families in the future.

The event celebrated and commemorated the history and the pioneers of the organisation, and showcased its accomplishments and the Bounty of Care it provides.

The event was attended by prominent public figures and stakeholders from the aged care industry and the community. The Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health, Ken Wyatt AM, and the State Minister for Families and Children and Youth Affairs, Jenny Mikakos, publicly articulated their support and admiration for the organisation’s achievements and endeavours, while they both endorsed its future plans and aspirations. Other special guests included Senator Jane Hume, Mr Steve Dimopoulos MP, the CEO of ACSA, Pat Sparrow, and the CEO of LASA, Veronica Jamison. Two significant announcements enriched the festive atmosphere of the night. The announcement of an extra 30 bed licences for the St Albans facility that will contribute to the reconstruction of the THALPORI facility, and the Anna Matthews OAM Research Scholarship Programme. The Scholarship aims to provide financial support to post-graduate research students for research projects that contribute to the wellbeing or care of the ageing Greek speaking community and other Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities, where appropriate.

The projection of several photos of the organisation’s history, along with the video “Bounty of Care”, intensified the emotional atmosphere that prevailed throughout the night. Moreover, the individual “thank you” cards from residents and community service clients that were gifted to guests, made for a unique and touching souvenir.

40 Year History of Fronditha Care 40 Years have passed since a small group of Greek professionals met in the hope of fulfilling a very ambitious vision: to support and care for the Greek speaking elderly in Australia. Many were the hurdles that had to be surpassed but with zeal and determination the fulfillment of the dream quickly became a reality.

On 26 April 1977, at the inaugural meeting of the interim committee of the Australian Greek Society for Care of the Elderly (AGSCE), the foundations were laid for the beginning and development of Fronditha Care. Its pioneers were already aware of the many problems our Greek speaking elderly were facing, and understood that those needs would increase exponentially when the migrants from the 1950’s and 1960’s would become elderly themselves.

The services of mainstream aged care providers at the time were inadequate and limited to the provision of medical care, while ignoring the psychological, linguistic, religious and cultural needs of the elderly.

Many in the Greek community were also sceptical about the establishment of the AGSCE as they struggled to understand its mission and, at the same time, the value of its contribution.

Their stance changed in 1983 when PRONIA, the first residential aged care (40 bed Low Care) hostel for Greek elderly in Victoria, first opened its doors. There was genuine recognition from the public that the AGSCE was an organisation that was capable of realising its objectives and lived up to its promises, and was committed to assisting the elderly. The organisation’s pioneers soon came to the realisation that the completion of PRONIA was only the first step in a long journey, a journey that would see the establishment of residential and community services throughout the Melbourne metropolitan regions of Victoria and into New South Wales.

The next chapter of the Fronditha Care story saw the construction and opening of its first nursing home, STEYI in 1989 (30 bed High Care). For the first time, STEYI provided our elderly with a model of care that not only provided end-to-end support but was also tailored to each individual’s personal, cultural and spiritual needs.

Emboldened by the completion of STEYI and motivated by the realisation that dementia was becoming increasingly widespread amongst the elderly, the organisation pushed on vigorously with its efforts to act immediately and effectively to provide the appropriate care for those afflicted with this condition required.

Page 21: 40 Years of a tradition of love and care...τις ευχαριστίες μου στο Σύλλογο Ιπποκράτης για την συνεχιζόμενη υποστήριξη

19

The result of this was the construction of GALINI, a residential aged care facility catering exclusively for people living with dementia, which opened its doors in 1993 (32 beds). GALINI’s model of care saw the implementation of innovative programs, which aimed to both provide the necessary support services in a secure environment, within a culturally-specific setting.

The ongoing progress and development of the AGSCE and the continuous improvement and expansion of service provision remained central to the organisation’s strategy, changing its name to Fronditha Care on 9 July 1996, to facilitate this growth. Stagnation was not a word that featured in Fronditha Care’s vocabulary.

The expansion of Fronditha Care to the four major metropolitan regions of Melbourne was now inevitable. When Fronditha Care extended its arms of care to St Albans in 1996 with the establishment of the THALPORI facility, to Thornbury in 1997 with the setting up of ANESI, and to Templestowe in 2005 with the construction of STORGI, its objective was to accommodate the increasing number of elderly, who were looking for residential aged care that was close to their loved ones, and that provided the culturally-specific model of care Fronditha Care was building its reputation.

In 2011, Fronditha Care in association with the Hippocrates Australian Greek Aged Persons Association, expanded its operations beyond Victoria, officially opening a residential aged care facility in Newcastle, New South Wales, named HIPPOCRATES, that catered to the needs of the elderly from various cultural backgrounds.

At the same time, Fronditha Care expanded its service provision beyond residential care to Community Services, providing home care assistance to the elderly. This division now services all of Greater Melbourne with qualified multi-lingual staff. The organisation also initiated the provision of Independent Living Units for elderly on low-income, and created Planned Activity Groups and respite care programs for the elderly and their carers, to counter the growing problem of isolation. Furthermore, Fronditha Care focused on the provision of information to our elderly to enable them to access and obtain appropriate aged care services, despite the cultural and linguistic barriers that they faced.

Page 22: 40 Years of a tradition of love and care...τις ευχαριστίες μου στο Σύλλογο Ιπποκράτης για την συνεχιζόμενη υποστήριξη

20

The Greek community has always been by Fronditha Care’s side and without its assistance the organisation’s journey would have been a very different one. The community not only came to trust in Fronditha Care, but has played a large role in strengthening the organisation through donations, sponsorships, partnerships and advocacy.

An integral part of Fronditha Care’s journey has been the organisation’s tireless and committed body of volunteers. Volunteers comprised the interim committee which both created the vision and set in motion the realisation of Fronditha Care. For the last 40 years, the Board of Directors and the work of its Subcommittees are managed by volunteers, who are continuing the original vision of the organisation’s founders.

The Auxiliary Committees are another form of volunteerism that has grown alongside Fronditha Care’s establishment. Throughout Fronditha Care’s 40 years of service to the community, the Auxiliary Committees have organised festivals and fetes, walkathons, radiothons, fundraising luncheons, dinners and other events that have brought together thousands of supporters, in an exemplary example of collaboration and commitment to the organisation’s cause. Our body of volunteers collectively generously give their heart and soul to fundraising efforts towards the establishment of residential care facilities and the improvement of service provision. Currently, there are three Auxiliary groups in operation aligned to our facilities in St Albans, Templestowe and Thornbury, whilst a very active Clayton committee operated for over 30 years.

Tributes Fronditha Care has a tradition of honouring individuals that have made a significant contribution to the organisation and its cause during their lifetime. The Board of Directors, management and staff would like to express the respect that they have for the work of the late Mr. Alfredo Kouris OAM, Mr. Vasilis Hatzisimeonidis, Mr. Peter Gogorosis and Mrs. Therese Fronistas and their sincere condolences to the families and friends of these exceptional individuals.

The late Vasilis Hatzisimeonidis was a Life Governor and an active member and supporter of Fronditha Care through his Meraklis Catering business. Vasilis, affectionately referred to as “Meraklis”, assisted with many fundraising campaigns and made considerable donations to many events and resident celebrations.

The late Alfredo Kouris OAM was a Life Governor and an active member and supporter of Fronditha Care. He was an advocate for Fronditha Care causes to provide essential services to the elderly. Through his Neos Pyrsos newspaper, he promoted Fronditha Care’s work to the Greek community, free of charge. He continued to advocate for Fronditha Care through various media outlets over many decades.

The late Therese Fronistas was a Life Member of Fronditha Care. For a period of three decades she worked tirelessly in fundraising, supporting and attending many fundraising activities, preparing translations and was a regular donor to the organisation.

23

Tribute to the late Peter Gogorosis The President, Directors, volunteers and staff of Fronditha Care were deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Peter Spiridon Gogorosis.

Peter came to Fronditha Care at a time that was critical for the organisation and for the Greek speaking elderly in the community.

During Peter’s 15 year tenure as the Chief Executive Officer we witnessed Fronditha Care expand significantly to provide residential and community care services to the Greek elderly across all of the Melbourne metropolitan regions.

Fronditha Care grew from two aged care facilities to five. Community services programs expanded, including a social housing program. Peter was an insightful leader. He was tough and unrelenting in his pursuit to ensure that access to care for the CALD community was made easier. He worked hard with other CALD groups to lobby government agencies to respond to the needs of the communities.

Peter was strong in his belief that maintaining language, cultural and religious beliefs within the care setting was essential in providing holistic care, particularly for residents suffering with dementia. Peter will be remembered as a leader that guided Fronditha Care through one of its growth phases, building the foundation to what we can be proud of today. He was also appointed a Life Governor of Fronditha Care.

We are eternally grateful for his outstanding contributions.

Fronditha Care’s Auxiliary Fundraising Committees form a dedicated group of volunteers who have contributed enormously to the organisation’s development over the last 40 years, from the inception of Fronditha Care to the present day.

Fundraising for Fronditha Care is their core activity and the 2016-2017 period saw a number of events organised and successfully executed by our Templestowe, Thornbury and St Albans Auxiliary Committees, while they also continued to build strong relationship and partnerships with the community.

Auxiliary Success

In November 2016, the Templestowe Auxiliary hosted what is now an annual tradition, a Christmas Luncheon at the Saint Haralambos Church Hall in Templestowe. The event was a huge success with over 250 attendees and an abundance of raffle and door prizes.

In July 2016, the auxiliary’s Cinema night at the Balwyn Cinema was sold out - a fantastic achievement. Guests were treated to supper before the movie, with an array of delicious homemade delicacies prepared by the Auxiliary members.

The Templestowe Auxiliary also reached yet another milestone this financial year, purchasing a brand new bus for the STORGI, Lower Templestowe residential aged care facility. The brand new, state-of-the-art and luxurious Mercedes Benz bus will comfortably transport Fronditha Care residents on their regular recreational outings.

Total amount raised by the Templestowe

Auxiliary in the 2016-17 period was:

$47,012

29

In cooperation with the Templestowe and Thornbury Auxiliaries, the St Albans Auxiliary hosted a Family Fun Day fundraising event in October 2016 at the THALPORI St Albans residential care facility.

The event celebrated the official opening of the facility’s new resident garden. Supporters of Fronditha Care enjoyed home cooked traditional food and traditional Greek BBQ, made with love by the Auxiliary members and our volunteers, while being entertained by live dancing and music.

The Thornbury Auxiliary organised a successful tavern dinner dance fundraiser at ‘Nikos Tavern’, Ringwood in March 2017. Guests enjoyed an evening of dancing to live Greek music and relished in delicious traditional Greek cuisine whilst showing their generosity and support to Fronditha Care. A special public announcement at the event was made by Sofia Mercoulias, President of AHEPA, who pledged to fundraise for a new bus for Fronditha Care Clayton.

Fronditha Care acknowledges the tireless and selfless efforts of the Fronditha Care auxiliary members. We extend our sincere thanks to the dedicated individuals who form a special and vital part of the Fronditha Care family.

Residential CareServices34 years of a tradition of love and care in residential aged care provision

Fronditha Care’s five residential aged care facilities located in Victoria and NSW have continued to achieve the highest industry standards of nursing care, while simultaneously providing enriching resident lifestyle programs to ensure that our elders are celebrated and active.

During the reporting period, our dedication to meeting the residential care needs of the community has resulted in new building projects being planned and realised, and additional beds being allocated to Fronditha Care by the Federal Government.

ClaytonSTEYI - PRONIA - GALINI Our residential care provision in Clayton, has been the recipient of praise and admiration from the community and industry stakeholders. The completion of the new STEYI facility has elevated the standard of accommodation and amenities offered. Furthermore, the dedication and training of staff has ensured a high standard of care while other initiatives undertaken have enriched the quality of life of our residents.

The implementation of a gardening program has empowered residents and given them a strong sense of belonging. The introduction of the reminiscing programme has worked wonders for both the elderly and staff, where with a simple click on Google maps, our residents are able to visit their native home towns and villages via satellite and see what changes have occurred over the years. Our residents’ lives are celebrated every day and we love listening to their life stories and experiences.

Our residents’ choir (ECHO) performed exceptionally well this year, with the highlight being their performance at the official opening of STEYI. Determined to create a happy and vibrant environment, our staff has created their own belly dancing group, performing regularly at Clayton and Fronditha Care’s other residential facilities. Tavern nights, musical performances and regular bus trips have also enriched our lifestyle program.

Building works for the redevelopment of our PRONIA facility were ongoing throughout the year, commencing in July 2016 with completion expected in October 2017. The new facility will not only provide the same luxury standards of accommodation and high quality of care that STEYI has brought to Fronditha Care, but will also host our Planned Activity Program (PAG) in the modern Zissis Dardalis Centre, a centre designated for activities to promote active ageing for the elderly in our community.

Management is fortunate to work alongside such an inspiring group of colleagues, volunteers and families, and would like to express our warmest thanks to all in making Fronditha Care an endearing, joyful place, that everyone calls home.

Thornbury ANESI - DAREBIN - MERRI - GRANDVIEW It has been yet another wonderful year for Thornbury with many achievements over the reporting period. Most importantly, this year saw us continue to meet industry accreditation standards, after successful unannounced visits from AACQA.

Ongoing up-skilling and learning opportunities have kept our staff retention rate high, while new staff members have also been welcomed. Our Labour Agreement continues with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP), allowing us to employ appropriately skilled, Greek speaking staff to meet the needs of our elders.

We have continued to foster relationships with our volunteers and in recognition of National Volunteers Week in May 2017, held a morning tea to thank them for their contribution. We have introduced many new activities via our lifestyle program and our daily bus outings keep our residents involved and engaged. Our Lifetime Wish list program has seen many residents’ wishes granted, such as a visit to Red Hill Church ‘Panagia Kamariani’ and a trip to Crown Casino. The highlight of the year was our participation in the 25 March Greek Independence Day commemorative march at the Shrine of Remembrance, with Fronditha Care residents (assisted by volunteers and staff) being the first from an aged care facility to take part. This was a true celebration of culture and heritage, keeping our residents connected and actively present in their community.

At the operational level, we have successfully managed projects including the commissioning of a generator, kitchen renovation and garden enhancements. This year also saw us successfully roll out the new computer based documentation system, iCare. As well as improving business processes and providing quality care to residents, documentation is streamlined allowing for better utilisation of staff time, greater flexibility and more contact with residents.

2017 also sees ANESI reach the milestone of 20 years of residential care provision to the Greek elderly and we look forward to celebrating this milestone later in the year.

To our staff and volunteers, we are grateful for your dedication and assistance.

Lower Templestowe STORGIThe reporting period has seen Fronditha Care’s residential care facility in Lower Templestowe, STORGI excelling in the provision of care, lifestyle activities and staff performance. In addition, the impressive contributions of our tireless volunteers and the fundraising of the Templestowe Auxiliary, has made 2016-2017 another remarkable period for us.

In October 2016, the iCare software system was launched, digitalising Fronditha Care’s clinical care documentation system. STORGI was the pilot site for the rollout of the cloud based system, with our staff managing the transition with relative ease. They continue to grow and champion the system through ongoing learning and advising staff at other facilities on how the new digital documentation method works.

This year we give special appreciation and congratulations to Androniki Zougoulos (Activities Officer) in achieving the Outstanding Contribution Award at the 2017 Fronditha Care Staff Awards. We are very proud of her and all the activities team for their impressive contributions. Our colourful lifestyle program saw the celebration and commemoration traditions such as OHI day, Greek Independence Day, a festive Christmas banquet, Australia Day and ANZAC Day. Thank you to the staff and volunteers at STORGI for bringing joy to our residents daily.

Each year it is humbling to see the volunteers and the community groups that freely give their time to making the lives of the residents we care for happier. We are very proud of the ongoing selfless contributions of our volunteer Konstantinos (Dinos) Diamantopoulos for being a finalist in the 2016 ACSA Volunteer of the Year Award. We also extend our gratitude to the Templestowe Auxiliary Committee whose zealous fundraising efforts over two years have culminated in the purchase of the gem of our facility, our new Mercedes Benz bus, for our resident excursions and outings.

St Albans THALPORI

During the reporting period, our THALPORI residential care facility in St. Albans has sought to strengthen its relationship with the families of our residents and to enrich its lifestyle program.

To facilitate closer and more effective communication between staff and families, THALPORI underwent a review and restructure of its nursing staff. The result has been the establishment of three additional full-time nursing positions. Now, two Unit Coordinators oversee the day-to-day running of the memory support unit and the nursing home, both coordinators acting as one point of contact for any concerns or issues that residents’ families would like to convey. Furthermore, these roles are also supported with the introduction of a full-time Clinical Care Coordinator, who works closely with the nursing staff to ensure all the clinical needs of our residents are fully met. The rollout of the iCare system in March 2017 has further streamlined and supported our clinical care and documentation management.

As a culturally inclusive organisation our THALPORI residential care facility has also enhanced its lifestyle program with an emphasis on hosting special cultural events each month, to celebrate cultural diversity and bring the residents together in a festive learning environment. Though Greek heritage and celebrations form the primary focus of our activities, in 2017 our Ethiopian staff prepared a delicious feast from the Horn of Africa for our residents, who particularly enjoyed the after dinner coffee ceremony. Our staff from the Philippines and Pacific Islands have also shared their food and culture, providing our residents with the opportunity to both learn and enjoy new experiences.

During the reporting period, considerable discussion occurred in relation to the future accommodation requirements of the THALPORI residents. It was with great anticipation that the management of Fronditha Care announced that plans for a new upgraded 92 bed facility have been completed, and construction will commence once Council approval is received.

NewcastleHIPPOCRATES

In the reporting period, the HIPPOCRATES facility in Newcastle continued to flourish and gain praise among the community. The high standard of service provision was verified once again by AACQA in October 2016, when, after a stringent audit, the facility achieved excellent results and received a further 3 year accreditation.

The special events that our staff organised brought staff, volunteers and residents together, enriching the lives of the elderly and improving their wellbeing. Two highlights were the Spring Spectacular in September, where the staff dressed up as famous singers, actors and artists, and the Christmas pantomime in December, which transformed the dining room into a cruise ship experience.

Capital works completed included the installation of an additional elevator and a covered walkway, allowing all residents to participate in activities in the neighbouring Hippocrates function centre, creating more opportunities for connection and celebration.

We also welcomed a new Manager of Residential Care, Judith Cornish, whose extensive experience in the aged care sector has facilitated streamlined procedures and community engagement.

The Hippocrates Association, Fronditha Care’s partner in Newcastle, also celebrated 25 years of operation on 20 May 2017, with a highly successful gala ball.

Hospitality ServicesAt Fronditha Care, the provision of high quality residential aged care goes beyond nursing care and extends into a range of hospitality services that encompass catering, housekeeping and laundry, maintenance and ongoing training. The appointment of Mr Peter Thiveos into the newly created Hospitality Services Manager role in 2016 has made a significant impact to the quality and delivery of these services.

From April to June 2017, updates and revisions were made to Fronditha Care’s Residential and Community Services Food Safety Program which met with approval by Australian Food Hygiene Services. Moreover, rational combi ovens have been installed in all of our facilities to ensure consistency of quality and flavour of all meals.

In order to ensure our resident satisfaction of the quality and food options provided, a resident survey was completed in 2017. The feedback was considered along with chef recommendations that have led to the implementation of an organisation-wide menu, adopted across all residential care facilities. This menu has received high praise from Leading Nutrition dieticians.

From February to June 2017, new cleaning systems have also been implemented that utilise microfibre materials to reduce risks of cross infection, while reducing ergonomic hazards for staff.

The installation of generators in each of our residential care facilities, from November 2016 to April 2017 guarantees that all of our facilities have an energy source back up in the event of any power outages.

In addition, from January to June 2017, a new uniform filing management system has been introduced which has led to greater efficiency and consistency throughout all of our facilities. Furthermore, the up-skilling and training of our staff has been a priority where in addition to training, junior staff received mentoring from senior staff.

We sincerely thank all our kitchen, laundry, cleaning and maintenance staff for their excellent work in the reporting period.

Lifestyle &Activities Fronditha Care believes that the happiness and wellbeing of residents goes beyond a nursing and medical care plan. Lifestyle and activities are central in importance to our culturally specific model of aged care, which aims to empower our elders to live the way they want, and enjoy what they love, by celebrating their culture and addressing their spiritual and emotional needs.

On a daily basis, our Lifestyle and Activities staff, with the assistance of our devoted volunteers, organise a multitude of social and recreational activities, exercise and leisure programs, outings and entertainment. In this way, we provide connection, participation, leisure and pure enjoyment for all of our care recipients. Many musicians from Greece have performed for our residents this year such as Panayiotis Holopoulos and Yoyo Tsampa, while various music choirs and dance groups from the community voluntarily bring joy to our residents.

This year Fronditha Care commemorated the heritage of its residents by celebrating OHI Day (28th October National Day), Greek Independence Day, Clean Monday, Tsiknopempti, Easter with the decoration of an Epitaph at each residential care facility, the Ascension of Mary, Christmas and New Year with vasilopita, Name days and Carnival (Apokries). Other events included Grandparents Day, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Valentine’s Day, Saint Patrick’s Day, Daffodil Day, Harmony Day, and the birthday of each care recipient.

A major highlight of our program is our daily bus outings that keep our residents active and connected to the community.

We thank our lifestyle staff for their energy and the joy they give to all our residents. Our volunteers also play an important role in activites and they are greatly appreciated by the elderly and Fronditha Care.

Community Services

Fronditha Care’s Community Services department has seen an expansion in service provision to the elderly in the community and their carers during the reporting period.

The staff training and new systems that were put into place in preparation for the deregulation of Home Care provision in February 2017, has seen Fronditha Care increase the number of elders that it receive services.

Our respite and activity programs have continued to grow with an emphasis being placed on the ethos of active ageing.

Moreover, our volunteer program has expanded and our committed volunteers have received high level recognition and industry awards.

Home Care Packages A monumental year in Home Care Packages has tested our commitment to the Greek community and the community’s faith in Fronditha Care. With the deregulation of Home Care Packages from February 2017, Fronditha Care revised its service delivery model to ensure that every individual is afforded the dignity and right to choose the extent to which they take control of their Home Care Package. We invested in the training and development of our existing staff and focused on strategies to attract and recruit new, highly competent staff. Finance systems were refined to allow capacity for our clients to autonomously log in to their own portal and monitor their package expenditure, making access to information instantaneous and unequivocally transparent.

These strategies, along with a strong advertising campaign, have yielded excellent results for existing and new clients choosing Fronditha Care to host their Home Care Package. Our two Care Consultants, Mahi Xepapadakou and Sylvia Tzimas, are available to the community for a free consultation to facilitate and support people’s entry to a very confusing and complicated aged care system. Most importantly however, is the focus of our service delivery on client outcomes. With increased choice and control, clients are moving away from standard domestic cleaning supports and choosing instead to reconnect with old friends and hobbies that were previously sacrificed due to increased frailty. Our aim is to support our elders to increase value and meaning in their lives and, based on the number of people increasingly choosing Fronditha Care as their package provider, we are achieving this goal.

Access and SupportThe Access and Support program provides short term, episodic support to people entering the aged care system for the first time. Our experienced and bilingual social workers, Mahi Xepapadakou and Sylvia Tzimas support people over 65 years of age who live in the southern region of Melbourne to learn about and access support services, to enable them to remain living as independently as possible.

The program aims to understand the current social, physical and emotional situation of elderly individuals so that referrals to appropriate services and supports can be put into place. Some examples include: connecting elders with an interest group, help with meal preparation or delivered meals, domestic assistance, community health services or personal care. Our Access and Support program has been inundated with calls since the deregulation of Home Care in February 2017 highlighting the very real need for expert advocacy on behalf of vulnerable elders with limited or no English language or computer literacy skills.

“Our staff deserves commendation for the true commitment that they have shown to their work and the resilience that they have demonstrated during a year full of change and transition.”

Heleni Bagiartakis, Executive Manager Community Services & Planning

Planned Activity Groups

Perhaps the most exciting initiative this year has been the ‘Walking Football’ program. George Halkias, a physiotherapist from the Melbourne City Soccer Club, in collaboration with Fronditha Care and VicHealth trialled the program. The benefits of the program to our clients have been multifaceted - physical, emotional and social. Our elderly participants forget their limitations to an extent and extend themselves physically, which provides invaluable bodily movement, flexibility and strengthening. Socially, the ‘competitive’ principle of soccer brings out the younger version of all who participate. These two things combined, create many emotional benefits. Our committed staff is able to engage participants in this activity and loves seeing clients “have fun while exercising”.

The feedback from our clients is that the program provides them “with exercises that help with movement and make life easier while having a good time.” Other feedback from our participants includes: “All I can say is that this program is getting better and better. It gives me strength to continue living. Brings so many memories back from when I was playing soccer”.

Of course, the careful coordination of our Planned Activities Groups by Sofia Keretzidis, and the youthful attitude and passionate commitment of our staff make our activities groups a place our elders look forward to going to every week.

Volunteer ProgramFronditha Care’s volunteer programs have gone from strength-to-strength over the last 12 months with 22 new active volunteers recruited. The growing number of people choosing Fronditha Care to volunteer their time is a testament to the growing trust and respect which the organisation has earned from the community. Our Bounty of Care for our most vulnerable elders is more than just a slogan – we live and breathe this ethos and our volunteers are instrumental in helping our elders live a life of value.

Our volunteer programs delivered a total of 741 volunteer hours to isolated elders living at home, and a total of 3,400 volunteer hours to Greek elders residing in either Fronditha Care or external residential care homes. The compassionate contributions and selflessness of our volunteers shows in the appreciation expressed by elders and in their anticipation of the arrival of our volunteers everyday.

On September 29, 2016, Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA), the leading peak body supporting over 700 charitable and community-based not-for-profit organisations held its annual awards ceremony. Two Fronditha Care volunteers, Tasos Bardakos and Dinos Diamantopoulos were amongst the finalists. Tasos Bardakos was awarded the Volunteer of the Year accolade. Furthermore, at the 2017 Australia Day Ceremony at Government House, Tasos Bardakos also received the 2016 Premier’s Volunteer Champions Award.

Commonwealth Home SupportHost Home – This unique respite program is in its thirteenth year and continues to provide invaluable respite for carers of elders with early stages of dementia or cognitive changes. The group is run out of an ordinary home in the southern suburbs of Melbourne and aims to provide a familiar environment away from home. Anastasia Hatzisalata has hosted the program very successfully for many years and her compassionate nature compels her to give back to the community and those most vulnerable.

Our partnership with Alfred Health remains strong as the Host Home program continues. Every week on a Thursday, Anastasia opens her home to a group of 5 to 6 elderly people suffering from dementia and with the support of personal support workers, provides a structured respite program. Activities include exercise programs, cooking, walks, outings, singing and dancing, craft making and discussion.

Domestic AssistanceTowards the end of this financial year, Fronditha Care was successful in obtaining Commonwealth Home Support Funds to deliver Domestic Assistance to people over the age of 65 from a non-English speaking background, living in the Northern and Western Metropolitan Regions of Melbourne. This marks an exciting expansion for Fronditha Care’s Community Services division into an area of service delivery that was previously exclusively provided by local councils. In 2017 Fronditha Care will be setting up and running the program to reach and support even more members of our community.

BrokerageOur Brokerage Services Program has experienced huge success. With the deregulation of Home Care Packages, all providers have sought to hold onto their existing clients, including those that are Greek speaking. As such, Fronditha Care has more than doubled the number of external agencies it brokers Greek speaking workers to. Managing this influx of requests was no small feat and our Brokerage Services Coordinator, Vicki Derbas is to be commended for her fortitude and perseverance.

Employee SurveyIn March 2017 an Employee Survey was distributed amongst all of the Fronditha Care staff. Distribution included all residential facilities in Victoria and New South Wales, the Corporate Office and Community Services. Completion of the survey was not compulsory but was an opportunity for staff to anonymously express their opinions about the organisation.

The survey was conducted in an easy, unobtrusive method which allowed staff to provide feedback on what is important to them, where the organisation should be focusing their attention and how the staff feel about their daily life at Fronditha Care. The survey was aimed at analysing a range of behaviours to understand staff levels of satisfaction and wellbeing.

The total number of employees who responded and submitted the survey was 175. Fronditha Care at the time of the survey employed 608 people and therefore the response received represents 29% of total employees.

The survey reviewed a range of factors which included Management & Communication with 79% of employees rating this as highly positive. 87% of respondents felt the organisation’s Work Environment & Methods were very good and in regard to Training and Performance Management, 80% and 71% respectively responded optimistically to these factors. Values & Behaviours received an 84% positive response and 78% of respondents felt they were part of a team under the area of Teamwork. In regards to overall satisfaction with the organisation, 73% of respondents indicated they were happy working at Fronditha Care.

Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S)Fronditha Care commits to providing our people with the highest safety standards and observes our obligations and general duty under the Occupational Health & Safety Act 2004 in Victoria and in NSW by the Occupational Health & Safety Act 2000. Fronditha Care also observes and complies with the new WorkCover law (WIRC Act 2013) as it has been re-casted by the Victorian Government and came into effect on 1 July 2014.

Each facility at Fronditha has its own Health and Safety Committee. Amongst other training, the OHS Committee members receive an additional annual training for Health and Safety Representatives to ensure every member is kept up to date with current legislation and various procedures. During the reporting year 2016-2017, nine additional employees either volunteered or were elected to receive training in order to become qualified Health & Safety Representatives which highlights the importance of the role and the appreciation of the staff members for a safe and healthy working environment.

A key focus for Fronditha Care this year has been establishing a consistent OH&S reporting structure across the organisation to capture data relating to staff incidents and/or injuries. This data is gathered on a monthly basis and from this the ‘OHS Dashboard’ is derived which provides a summary of injury hotspots, types of accidents occurring, near misses and days lost. This report is submitted to the board Risk Management & Finance Committee for their information and review.

This data will support Fronditha Care in identifying future training requirements for our people, appropriate preventative actions to minimise number of incidents and early intervention strategies to eliminate time lost as a result of an injury.

47

Recruitment of Greek Speaking Staff During 2014, Fronditha Care was successful in its application for a Labour Agreement with the Department of Immigration & Border Protection (DIBP).

The current Labour Agreement was the first of its kind in the aged care industry and has greatly assisted the organisation in sourcing skilled overseas Greek speaking personal care workers whilst responding to the cultural and language needs of its care recipients.

To date, Fronditha Care has nominated, sponsored and employed 30 people under the Labour Agreement. Although this constitutes only 4.42% of our workforce, a tremendous difference has been made to the services we provide, particularly with the care recipients who can only speak Greek or have regressed to their original language of Greek due to a dementia condition.

More recently, on 31 March 2017, Fronditha Care received an unannounced visit from representatives of the Sponsor Monitoring Unit, DIBP, to conduct a monitoring session of the Labour Agreement program. A letter was received from that office confirming that Fronditha Care has been assessed as being successfully compliant with the sponsorship requirements and Migration Regulations 1994 (the Regulations) for the Temporary Work (Skilled) (Subclass 457) visa program.

This agreement concluded on the 31 July 2017 and a further application has been made so a new, overarching Labour Agreement can be established. It is hoped that the new application will be approved which will not only allow the organisation to keep nominating and sponsoring skilled Greek speaking Personal Care Workers but also to transition the existing cohort of employees onto a permanent residency visa.

Induction ProgramFronditha Care welcomes new employees to the organisation through a formal Induction Program. It provides them with an overview of the organisation, the different areas of the business as well as an introduction to key members of staff, such as the Executive Team. These programs usually take up to a day to conduct and occur two or more times a year, depending upon the intake of new staff. Presentations are made by managers from all the Fronditha Care departments.

The first Induction Program for 2017 was held on Tuesday, 14 February at the Fronditha Care Clayton Residential Aged Care Facility, in its multipurpose room. Overall, the Program was found to be very informative and useful. The main aspect that the new staff liked most was meeting staff from other sites and in particular the managers and the CEO.

Training and Personal Development

The department of Human Resources at Fronditha Care is continuously working to ensure all staff members receive adequate training throughout the year. Training logs are kept up to date by Residential Care Managers, Community Services Supervisors and Human Resources, who report on them on a monthly basis.

Staff Academic Scholarship Programme

In order for Fronditha Care to further develop and enhance the skills and qualifications of its individuals, a new Academic Scholarship Policy was introduced whereby three (3) scholarships are made available to individuals who either apply or are nominated by their immediate managers based on their work merit, performance, team spirit and ethos. The purpose of this initiative is to establish a core element of employees who have achieved an academic qualification in their nominated field to ensure that Fronditha Care will have skilled and qualified people to support the services provided to our elderly now and into the future.

Leadership Success – A holistic approach

A 12-month Leadership Development Program was initiated in July 2016 with tools that accurately measured the skills and competencies of all Managers for the purpose of allocating, as best as possible, a training and development plan for them.

The program concluded successfully with the majority of the managers giving excellent feedback and applying gained knowledge into practice. Fronditha Care is now planning ahead for the next year to shift from the ‘Gaining Knowledge’ spectrum into the ‘Shaping Behaviour’ sphere in order for the participants to foster a culture of support, encouragement and positive attitude in their everyday leadership standard practice.

Fronditha Care also identified the need to extend and open up training sessions on Leadership to the next level of the hierarchy of the organisation recognising the importance of leadership traits across all levels. Managers and supervisors nominated high potential individuals based on the characteristics they have demonstrated such as adaptability to change, strategic thinking, integrity, visionary and positive mindset as well as self awareness and team work ethos.

This program is anticipated to commence in the financial year of 2017 - 2018 and it is hoped that the outcome will be invaluable for both the participants and the organisation.

Employee Profile Demographic Data A workforce analysis was undertaken in June 2017 and the results below provide information regarding Fronditha Care’s current workforce including gender and age distribution, languages spoken and employment status.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN

In addition to the 232 Greek speaking employees at Fronditha Care, Table 2 highlights the comparison of those whose first language is English and those with another language as their first language who form the majority of the workforce. In particular, a total of 232 employees or 38 percent can speak Greek, whilst 76 percent of employees have English as their first or second language. There are also a large proportion of employees, 45 percent, whose first language is neither English or Greek, which further exemplifies the emphasis on cultural diversity at Fronditha Care.

GENDER DISTRIBUTION

The table in Table 1 highlights that 80 percent of all staff employed at Fronditha Care are female. This reflects a common difference in gender within the aged-care industry, showing that work-place preferences of females are more aligned with aged-care services, and that they are perhaps more in demand by the ageing and elderly clients of Fronditha Care.

AGE DISTRIBUTION

Table 3 provides a broad snapshot of the age groups of the Fronditha Care workforce. Particularly, it is noted that the majority of employees sit in the 35 to 44 year old cohort, comprising 25 percent of the workforce or 152 employees.

Table 3 - Age Distribution

Age Group Count Percentage

It is encouraging to observe from the table above that younger employees are joining the aged-care sector with 26 percent sitting in the 18-34 year cohort. Furthermore, it is evident that Fronditha Care employs a considerable number of more mature employees, of which 19 percent are between the age of 55-64 and 7 percent, who are over the age of 65. This demonstrates that Fronditha Care values and supports the employment of older workers. The distribution of employees across all age-groups is observed to be relatively even, further demonstrating Fronditha Care’s value for equal opportunity employment.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

As can be seen from Table 4, the largest component of the Fronditha Care workforce is comprised of permanent part time employees with 62 percent sitting in this category. This is followed by casual employees that make up 26 percent of the workforce. Only 12 percent of employees at Fronditha Care are employed on a permanent full time basis. This data is supportive of worldwide trends which, over recent years, have shown a shift away from full time employment to that of a more part time nature. The prevalence of part-time employment at Fronditha Care is reflective of the importance we place on providing flexibility and opportunities for employees to achieve a work-life balance.

Judith Cornish Residential Care Manager Mayfield, Newcastle

Fronditha Care has made such an impact on our new Manager of Residential Care in Newcastle, Judith Cornish, that after six months into her role she is considering changing her retirement plans.

“I think that working in an organisation with good culture allows you to extend your working life,” she says.

“I was ready to retire but now I think that I could continue to work on. It’s really improved my quality of life as well.”

Judith spent 10 years working within the residential aged care environment in NSW before she took the job at the HIPPOCRATES facility, thanks to the encouragement of the outgoing manager.

Compared to other residential care facilities she has worked within, she has found life at Fronditha Care quite different for both the staff and, above all, for the residents. It’s much more resident focused,” she says.

“The culture is really set by the people that lead the organisation. They’re very focused on ensuring residents have a good quality of life within a caring and active environment.”

She has been impressed with the amount of support she has received from management, who check in with her about three times a week, and not “once every three months”.

Thomas NianiakosHead Chef,Clayton

Chef Thomas Nianiakos has only been at Fronditha Care for nine months but already has two favourites on the menu.

“As a savoury dish I like cooking Iman baldi (a vegetarian dish with eggplant onions potatoes tomatoes and lots of herbs),” he says.

“As a sweet dish I like making Kataifi.”

Working out of the Clayton facility’s kitchen, Thomas has been excited to be refining his skills in Greek cuisine but equally enjoying the chance to provide the best “home cooking” experience for the residents.

He has seen how the familiarity of the dishes contributes to the unique environment at Fronditha Care and cherishes the chance to make flavourful but balanced meals.

“I have learned a lot about creating a balanced, nutritious menu that will encourage good health and wellbeing for the residents while still allowing myself and the other chefs flexibility to be creative in the kitchen,” he said.

A new improved menu, jam-packed with traditional meals like stifado, spanakopita, moussaka and more modern specialties will be rolled out very soon.

The menu is regularly reviewed by the residents, clients and dietitians to make sure there’s variety and above all else, tastes delicious.

PublicAffairsFronditha Care has an extensive public engagement program that, during the reporting period, has seen the continued roll out of the organisation’s wider communications strategy.

59

After receiving endorsement by the Board of Directors, since July 2016, the public affairs team has focused a great deal of energy in the roll out of the organisation’s rebranding strategy. This ongoing project has sought to update and modernise the image and profile of Fronditha Care, and to reposition the organisation within the aged care sector, through the Tree of Bounty symbolism and the ethos of the Bounty of Care.

Our media engagement has remained strong with our weekly Monday AM radio show on 3XY keeping the community informed of Fronditha Care’s developments and services, and with SBS radio regularly featuring Fronditha Care stakeholders. Weekly and monthly publications in Melbourne’s Greek newspapers, Neos Kosmos and Ta Nea, have also been a key aspect in our communication with the community. Research and drafting of the oral history of Fronditha Care has been ongoing, with the book expected to be launched at the end of 2017.

Multi-generational public engagement has been facilitated through the launch of Fronditha Care’s social media this year and initiatives such as increased cooperation with NUGAS, have fostered links with a wider demographic. Our increased participation in community festivals such as the White Tower Thessaloniki festival in November 2016 (Federation Square), the Antipodes Festival in February 2017 (Lonsdale Street) and the Piers Festival in April 2017 (Princess Pier) have also increased our public profile.

Our public affairs team has also successfully organised events such as the official opening of our STEYI facility in February 2017 and the 40 Year Anniversary Fronditha Care Gala Ball in May 2017 at the Glasshouse. This event was a very successful fundraising event that celebrated the organisation’s 40 years of service to the community. The event received highly positive commendation from many stakeholders within the aged care industry and the wider community.
