An A–Z list of the forty profiled individuals.

The detailed profiles 6–56

Mini-biographies, key achievements and market views for all profiled individuals, displayed in alphabetical order.

I am delighted to introduce ’40 under 40’, our pick of some of the best, young professionals working in tax today. The competition for inclusion in this guide was intense – we received many more submissions than expected, and there wasn’t a single weak entry among them.

Everyone will have an opinion on who should be listed here, so to help us make the best selection a team of independent researchers evaluated all submissions, taking up client and employer references from major FTSE 100 companies to high net worth individuals. We were, in general, looking for technical excellence, commercial nous and good client skills. Thank you to everyone who took part and to all those who kindly supplied detailed references.

All the individuals profiled here come highly rated and if they are anything to go by, the future of the tax profession is in good hands.

Methodology & rules

‘40 under 40’ is a guide to forty leading tax professionals based in the uK, under the age of forty as at 1 november 2011, who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their careers to date, as verified by our independent researchers and by Tax Journal.

In compiling this list, Tax Journal received submissions for individuals from a wide range of organisations – including accountancy and law firms, HMRC, Tax Chambers, from industry and tax-related support services. All submissions were made in accordance with the entry rules and procedures set out below.

To assess the submissions, a team of experienced freelance professional services journalists and researchers – all of whom were independent of any of the organisations and individuals who made submissions – took up references from 600+ client and employer referees spanning major FTSE 100 companies to high-net worth individuals. The shortlist was reviewed by the Tax Journal team, who finalised the 40 individuals selected. For the avoidance of doubt, firms and individuals cannot pay to be included in this guide.

With acknowledgements to Ben Rigby, Alex Aldridge, Katie Paxton-Doggett and Mary-Carmel Barbour.

Entry rules and procedures

• Nominations had to be submitted using a standard submission form. It was made clear that additional materials were not considered.

• The contact details of at least two (and no more than five) referees had to be supplied for each individual nominated. Where appropriate, client referees were likely to carry more weight.

• Shortlisted entrants were in some cases asked to provide further information.

• Employees and office holders of Tax Journal and its publishing company, LexisNexis, were not eligible to enter.

• No more than 20 individuals per organisation could be nominated. • A research team evaluated submissions but the final decisions were

made at the discretion of Tax Journal. • The content of any entry could be used for publicity purposes unless

the entrant withheld their consent to this in writing. • Entrants were deemed to have accepted these rules and

procedures and to have agreed to be bound by them when entering this competition.

• We regret that feedback cannot be provided on individual entries. • Submitting the nomination form was taken as agreement that

referees could be contacted by Tax Journal’s research team. • To help us manage and maintain the reputation of the ‘40 under 40’

guide those making submissions were required to inform us about any negative media stories, malpractice or disciplinary issue or other event of which we should be aware that occurred during the preceding 12 months. Such an event did not necessarily mean that the submission was disallowed, however if it was not disclosed the submission could be invalidated.

Key achievements

• Since 2003 Daniel has made a huge contribution to the growth of Grant Thornton’s private client team in Birmingham, which has grown over eight years from four people to 15 people, winning the LexisNexis Taxation Best High Net Worth Team award in 2007, as a single office team on the way, despite stiff competition.

• He has developed a reputation as a trusted adviser to a range of wealthy clients and private companies with complex, often multijurisdictional and multi-tax issues, providing clear, creative and commercial advice to help them meet their personal and business objectives.

Having previously worked as an audit supervisor, post ACCA-qualification, in 1999, daniel moved into tax, first joining Bentley Jennison and obtaining his CTA qualification. Following a 2001 move to Grant Thornton’s Birmingham office, he gradually ascended from Tax Senior to Tax Partner, covering corporate and private client tax, including a stint in the firm’s national Tax Office, providing training, technical support on complex issues, and working with counsel on bespoke tax solutions. returning to Birmingham in 2005, he made Partner aged 33 in 2008, heading up the entrepreneurial and Private Client team, delivering commercial and practical tax solutions to clients across a number of jurisdictions.

Dan’s work is valued at the absolute highest level. He places quality at the absolute fore of everything he does and this approach has resonated strongly within his team. His ability to unravel the most complex of tax issues and present a workable and value adding solution is second to none.

Dan has broad technical expertise and is one of the most creative tax practitioners I know. Many tax people are technically excellent but the added ability to think outside the box is an invaluable skill when seeking to solve complex client problems.

James provides dispassionate advice on the strengths and weaknesses of a case along with likely timescales.

One of the very best ‘all-rounders’ out of a variety of junior tax barristers, he is technically strong but allies this with practical, commercial suggestions.

Young, personable and very approachable; he is extremely talented with an excellent track record.

Rarely can you find a practitioner with the commercial and client skills, in addition to the technical knowledge. James has them all.

Key achievements

• In 2011, Carl headed up the corporation tax and PAYE aspects of a major deal which resulted in the completion of a sale in excess of £50m.

• Carl’s skills include developing compliance solutions to enhance the internal review of PAYE expenses systems, owing to the increased intensity of HMRC checks, thus advising clients to resolve any potential tax exposure that could arise by mirroring HMRC’s own best practice, of which HMRC Inspectors have been extremely complimentary, and which highlights his foresight into future rule changes with the stricter penalty regime now in place.

Previously a graduate trainee, Carl ’s progress within his firm saw him fast tracked through the firm’s graduate programme to become a Tax Manager and then Associate Partner at 24 years old; he took over the running of an expanding tax department during the midst of an economic recession, and subsequently became a full Partner at 25 thanks to producing ‘pro-active tax planning that was easily understood’, for clients, whether tradesmen, consultants or major international sport stars, advised by Carl and his private client team.

Houghton Stone

A very approachable young man, very knowledgeable on the changing tax arena.

Carl is exceptional; his ability to understand problems from both a technical and practical viewpoint allow him to produce well documented and reasoned arguments that both the client and HMRC find acceptable.

His main ability is to get information across in simple terms so that my staff and I understand exactly what is going on.

Key achievements

• David forced HMRC to refund nearly £1m of tax paid by a high-profile FTSE100 Plc director in respect of an employment termination settlement payment, where HMRC had previously insisted the tax was payable, which he achieved this result without recourse to litigation.

• He advised a major US charitable foundation on the UK tax treatment of an innovative UK-based international carbon investment fund with charitable status. The work involves sophisticated corporate tax analysis, with a specialist charity tax overlay.

One of the growing number of employed Barristers working within law firms as a precursor to legal services liberalisation, david joined Farrer & Co following pupillage at 3 Stone Buildings and work with Allen & Overy’s corporate tax team, joining as a tax ‘all-rounder’, advising in all areas outside the firm’s traditional private wealth offering.

David’s expertise ranges over a wide range of practice areas, but particularly in contentious tax, where he has developed a practice which, his firm says, enables ‘apparently miraculous outright victories against HMRC in circumstances where other advisers have recommended giving in and paying up’.

Farrer & Co

The best tax lawyer I have ever come across at translating arcane concepts into digestible information.

Extremely engaging during conferences; he was able to resolve our concerns over tax issues of donors and trustees in a compliant manner.

In these most difficult economic times, his natural regard for managing cost is especially valuable to both personal and corporate clients.

His commercial nous was most evident in his ability to consider the taxman’s likely responses, along with the ultimate position they would have to consider.

A very competent and professional accountant. We have always been extremely happy and impressed with her work both for technical quality, and her detailed explanation of the processes involved. We service the global market with clients all over the world; Rebecca has given us guidance on the relevant VAT implications of various countries.

She has worked with a variety of different clients and is very practical in solving problems, demonstrating her experience in direct and indirect tax.

Approachable and knowledgeable, which is helped by her having an understanding of our business, having visited us to gain a greater understanding of the hospitality business.

• Chris was the HMRC policy lead in developing the 2007 Money Laundering Regulations, working with HM Treasury and external stakeholders to successfully expand HMRC’s supervisory role.

• Chris also led the successful consultation on a new offshore penalty for incorrect returns, supporting ministers through the Finance Bill process on associated regulations needed to implement the measure. The outcome can be seen in FA 2010 Sch 10 and s 35, which creates a higher penalty to be charged where funds are kept in a jurisdiction where HMRC is less likely to obtain information.

Chris joined HMrC in 2005, as a fast stream entrant and has worked on policy development in excise and Stamp Taxes on money laundering, followed by a period working in the office of the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, as an Assistant Private Secretary. Since 2009 he has acted as a Grade 7 policy advisor on the review of Powers, deterrents and Safeguards. McGrigors

Bright and savvy and fun to work with, he is well within his comfort zone on heavyweight cases and seemingly unflappable.

I have never been anything other than very impressed with his technical ability and superb in-depth knowledge of the litigation process.

He is a safe pair of hands, very practical and commercial, and creative in finding the best possible solution to what can seem difficult issues.

Stuart has got it all: the knowledge, the commercial ability and, equally importantly, the people skills. Doubtless he has a very good career ahead of him.

Key achievements

• Jordan’s successful progression (at the then age of 32) to a position where he heads up DLA Piper’s equity incentives practice in the Midlands and is a key UK contact for equity incentives both nationally and internationally is a testament to his ability and his importance to DLA Piper.

• Jordan has well-established skills in relation to international equity incentives, and is currently acting (as sole UK advisor) for a US-based (and NYSE-listed) multinational oil company in relation to the equity incentive structures for its UK group employees, including adapting its US-based plans in order to accommodate the UK incentives.

Jordan has a wide practice dealing with all areas of uK corporate and business tax and has significant experience of both corporate and real estate based deals. However, his primary specialism has been in relation to equity incentives and tax-efficient remuneration structures.

Jordan is one of DLA Piper’s key UK contacts in relation to equity incentives and remuneration and, in conjunction with the DLA global equity incentives team, regularly advises on highly complex equity incentive structures.

DLA Piper

Very detailed, complete and precise advice given, always worded in a way a non-specialist will understand.

He takes the lead; I do not have to worry when he is advising us; he handled a very delicate issue which almost threatened the whole deal, which was excellent; making sure tax risks were managed without jeopardising the deal.

Employee share plans is a relatively niche area of tax law; Jordan’s knowledge in this area is very high.

Key achievements

• Chairing the firm’s property group; driving an increase in property contacts from 2,500 to 5,000+ in his 12 months of chairmanship. Success can be measured over this period by revenues holding up despite market downturn.

• Recently engaged by a client on Monday, selling his business the following Tuesday. Over this narrow timeframe Mark delivered and oversaw corporate tax planning advice including issuing share options, advice re entrepreneurs’ relief and inheritance tax planning. Even with little time Mark’s team ensured that the company owner and management were not dual-taxed on proceeds by share option planning.

Mark Webb was called to the Bar in October 1998 and qualified as a CTA in 2001. His clients range across the property, financial service and media sectors. Mark provides commercially focused advice on set up, structuring and ongoing compliance matters.

Mark has also been the key adviser on a range of complex transactions including acquisitions, disposals and MBOs, advising companies, their owners and private equity houses on tax issues around financing, structuring, goodwill write-off and entrepreneurs’ relief. He chairs the firm’s property group and is a member of the media sector group.

His understanding of our property investment objectives is paramount in the professional and personable service we receive.

Mark is an excellent all-round tax practitioner. He has very definite industry and legislation strengths but his all-round knowledge and logical approach to taxation issues, is where his value resides, in my view.

A highly competent tax practitioner with a remarkable ability to take challenges in his stride.

Key achievements

• Baxi Group Ltd: Richard was part of the team that assisted Baxi all the way from the Tribunal to the House of Lords on the VAT treatment of its loyalty scheme.

• Charities and cost-sharing: within PKF, he advises a large number of charities with their VAT affairs, helping them significantly reduce their VAT costs and aiding them through the myriad of VAT. The firm’s work on the VAT cost-sharing exemption demonstrates a commitment to this sector.

richard went straight from school into accountancy, qualifying first as an AAT then an ACA, both at the first attempt, while working in small accountancy firms. He then joined rSM robson rhodes and specialised initially in corporate tax, before moving on to VAT and becoming CTA-qualified, again at the first attempt. After six years with robson rhodes, he moved to HMrC as an anti-avoidance Adviser and then joined PwC’s Indirect Tax Litigation Team five years later, before joining PKF nearly three years ago, currently as one of the firm’s VAT directors.

Richard was in charge of a vast and eclectic array of VAT disputes and what impressed me, quite apart from his VAT knowledge, was his instinctive abilities as a VAT litigator and tactician in disputes with HMRC.

Richard has a keen eye on the bigger picture.

Many not-for-profit clients have given extremely positive feedback about Richard’s performance and use him as a first port of call on any VAT advice they require.

Richard conducts himself in an extremely professional, yet friendly and approachable, manner.
