A reminder for my brothers in Trinidad and Tobago (hafidhahumullah)

From your brother, in need of your pardon, Abu Abdur-Rahmaan Abdullah ibn Hakim Muhammad, at-Trinidaadee

Verily, all praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, and seek His aid, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls, and from our evil deeds. He who Allah guides is truly guided, and he who Allah misguides, no one can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity who deserves to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

To proceed: Allaah azzawajal has said in His Noble Quran: “And remind, for verily, the reminding profits the believers.” (Ayah 51:55). And then thereafter, He azzawajal says:

“And I (Allâh) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)” (Ayah 51:56).

This is a reminder firstly for myself, and then for my beautiful and noble brothers of Trinidad and Tobago (hafidhahumullah), who are striving to be upon the Deen of Allaah and His Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam), with the understanding of those three beautiful and noble generations that followed him in righteousness. This is not a description of the conditions, pillars and performance of the Salaah, for it is more fitting for those over me to write on that, as is the case of “The Prophet's Prayer Described” by our noble Shaykh al-Alabani, raheemullah (see here: http://aa.trinimuslims.com/ilm/?book=the_prophets_prayer).

Rather this a collection of ahadith (in English, but with references to the texts) that pertain to matters of purification and salaah that are sometimes forgotten or perhaps not known, and I pray that collecting them would help me and anyone who reads this to strive to put these Sunnan into practice, and encourage others to practice the Sunnah, however small the practice. The Messenger of Allaah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Whoever invites to goodness will have a reward like all those who follow him in that, without their rewards decreasing in the least..." (Sahih Muslim). I pray that Allaah accepts this from me, and all those that helped and will help inshaAllaah, and it become a means of tipping our scales on a Day when only one's deeds, through the Mercy of Allaah, will avail him. Ameen.

I. Regarding Intentions (Five from An-Nawawi's 40 Hadeeth)NOTE: An-Nawawi's 40 Hadeth, with Arabic text, recitations and explanations can be found here:http://aa.trinimuslims.com/ilm/?book=nawawi40hadith

(1) Deeds are but by intentions

On the authority of the leader of the believers, ‘Abee Hafs `Umar ibn al-Khattaab - radiyallaahu`anhu - who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah – sallallaahu`alayhi wasallam - say: ‘Actions are but by intentions and every man shall have only that which he intended. ‘Thus he whose migration was for Allaah and His Messenger, his migration was for Allaah and His Messenger, ‘And he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, ‘His migration was for that for which he migrated.’”

(Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim; An-Nawawi #1)

(2) Rejection of innovations

On the authority of the Mother of the Faithful, Umm `Abdillaah `Aa'ishah - radhiyallaahu `anhaa who said: "The Messenger of Allaah - sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam - said: 'He who innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e. Islaam] that is not of it will have it rejected [by Allaah].' " Reported by al-Bukhaaree and Muslim.

And in one version of Muslim it reads: "He who does an act which we have not commanded, will have it rejected [by Allaah]."

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim; An-Nawawi #5)

(3) That which enters one into Jannah

On the authority of Mu`aadh ibn Jabal - radiyallaahuanhu - who said: I said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah, tell me of an act which will take me into paradise and will keep me away from the Hell Fire’.“He said: ‘You have asked about a great matter, yet it is easy for him whom Allaah makes it easy: ‘Worship Allaah, without associating any partners with him; establish the prayer: pay the zakaah; fast in Ramadhaan; and make the Pilgrimage to the House.”

Then he said: ‘Shall I not guide you towards the means of goodness? Fasting is a shield; Charity wipes

away sin as water extinguishes fire; and the praying of a man in the depths of the night. “Then he recited: {Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend (in charity in Allaah’s Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them. No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do.}’ [As-Sajdah 32:16-17]

Then he said: ‘Shall I not inform you of the head of the matter, its pillar and its peak?’ “I said: ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allaah.’ He said: ‘The head of the matter is Islaam, its pillar is the prayer, and its peak is Jihaad. “Then he said: ‘Shall I not tell you of the foundation of all of that?’ "I said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allaah.' So he took hold of his tongue and said: 'Restrain this.'. “I said: ‘O Prophet of Allaah, will we be taken to account for what we say with it?’ “He said: ‘May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu`aadh! Is there anything that throws people into the Hell Fire upon their faces-or: on their noses – except the harvest of their tongues?’”

(at-Tirmidhi, who said it was a good and sound Hadeeth; An-Nawawi #29)

(4) The one who Allaah Loves

On the authority of ‘Abee Hurayrah - radiyallaahu anhu - who said: “The Messenger of Allaah - sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam - said: ‘Verily, Allaah the Most High has said: "Whoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, then I have declared war against him. And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory deeds until I love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, and his sight with which he sees, And his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask of Me, I would surely give it to him; and were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari; An-Nawawi #38)

(5) The Forgiveness of Allaah

On the authority of Anas - radiyallaahu anhu – who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah - sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam – say: ‘Allaah the Most High has said: “O son of Aadam, as long as you invoke Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Aadam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and you then asked forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you. O son of Aadam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it.

(Related by at-Tirmidhi and he called it a Hasan Saheeh Hadeeth; An-Nawawi #42)

II. Regarding Purification

(6) Answering the call of nature in public places

Abu Hurairah radhiAllahu anhu, narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, said: “Save yourself from two acts which are cause of being cursed.” The companions asked, “What are those acts?” The Prophet said, “Answering the call of nature on public roads and under trees which people use as shade.”

(Sahih Muslim; Purification, Chapter: Prohibition of defecating to relieve oneself on roads or in shades, Hadith 269)

(7) Touching the private parts with the right hand

Abu Qatadah radhiAllahuu anhu narrated: Allaah’s Messenger salAllahu alahi wa sallam said:“Whenever anyone of you drinks water, he should not breathe in the drinking utensil, and whenever any one of you goes to the lavatory, he should neither touch his private part nor clean his private parts wit his right hand.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Wudu, Chapter: It is forbidden to clean the private parts with the right hand. Hadith 153)

(8) Urinating into a hole

Abdullah bin Surgis radhiAllahuu anhu narrated: “The Prophet salAllahu alahi wa sallam has forbidden for anyone to urinate into a hole.”

(Abu Dawood, Purification, Chapter: prohibition from urinating into a hole, Hadith 29)

(9) Urinating in the bath area

Abdullah bin Mughaffal narrated, “Allah’s Messenger sallallaahu`alayhi wasallam said:“Do not any of you urinate in his bathing area.”

(Abu Dawood, Purification, Chapter: About urinating in a bath area, Hadith 27)

8

Page 9: 40 Hadith - Trini Muslimsdownloads.trinimuslims.com/Docs/hadith/FINAL_40...40 Hadith pertaining to the Salaah (that are perhaps sometimes forgotten) A reminder for my brothers in Trinidad

(10) Severe pressure of the call of nature invalidates the Salaah

(A) The Prophet sallallaahu`alayhi wasallam said: “He who has to answer the call of nature, he should first do so, and then perform the salah”

(Abu Dawood, Purification, Chapter: What should one do if one has to answer the call of nature, Hadith 89)

(B) Allaah’s Messenger sallallaahu`alayhi wasallam said: “When one has his meal before him, or one is under severe pressure to relieve himself, one’s prayer is not valid.”

(Sahih Muslim, Mosques, Abhorring the prayer in the presence of meal, Hadith 560)

(11) Ghusl on a Friday

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri narrated that Allaah’s Messenger sallallaahu`alayhi wasallam said: “Bathing on Friday is compulsory for every Muslim who has attained the age of puberty and (also) the cleaning of his teeth with Siwak (miswak), and the use of perfume, if available.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-Jumu’ah, Chapter: to perfume (oneself) before going for Friday prayer, Hadith 880)

(12) Rinsing the mouth after drinking milk (before Salaah)

Ibn Abbas narrated: The Messenger of Allaah Sallallaahu`alayhi wasallam drank milk, rinsed his mouth and said: “it has fat.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Wudhu, Chapter: Whether to rinse the mouth after drinking milk, Hadith 211)

9

III. The dress for SalaahAllaah azzawajal mentions in the Quran: “O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes) while praying.” [Al-A'raaf 7:31]

(13) Marks or pictures on clothes

(A) Aishah radhiAllahu`anha narrated, “the Prophet (salAllahu`alayhi wa sallam) performed Salah in a khamisah (a square garment) with marks on it. During the Salaah he looked at its marks. So when he finished the Salah, he said, “Take this khamisah of mine to Abu Jahm and get me his Anbijaniyah (a woolen garment without marks) as it (the khamisah) has diverted my attention from the Salaah”.

(Sahih al-Bukhari; Prayer, Chapter: If a person performed Salah in a dress with marks Hadith 373)

(B) Anas (radhiAllahu`anhu) narrated that Aishah, radhiAllahu`anha, had a Qiram (a thin marked woolen curtain) with which she had screened one side of her home. The Prophet salAllahu`alayhi wa sallam said: “Take away this Qiram of yours, as its pictures are still displayed in front of me during my salaah (ie, they divert my attention from the Salaah)”

(Sahih al-Bukhari; As-Salaah, Hadith 5959)

NOTE: Pictures and drawings on children's clothing (ruling)

Question: What is the ruling regarding pictures and drawings on children's clothing, since these (children's) clothes are not free from pictures?

Response: It is not permissible to buy clothing upon which pictures and drawings of that which has a soul from amongst the humans, animals or birds. This is because making pictures and using them is haraam, for the many authentic ahaadeeth which forbid this and threaten severe punishment over it. The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) cursed those who made pictures [Saheeh al-Bukhari, volume 7 hadeeth 67] and informed that they will be the most severely punished on the Day of Jugdement [Saheeh al-Bukhari, volume 7 hadeeth 64 and 65].

So it is not permissible to wear clothing upon which is a picture and nor is it permissible to dress a young child with it. That which is obligatory is to purchase clothing without pictures and these are many.

And all Praise is for Allaah. al-Muntaqaa min Fataawa Fadheelatush-Shaykh Saalih Ibn Fowzaan

IV. The Adhaan vs. the Iqaamah (and related matters)

(14) The Adhan vs. the Iqaamah: Adhan twice, Iqaamah once

Anas (radhiAllahu`anhu) narrated, “Bilal was ordered to repeat the wording of the Adhan for Salah twice (in doubles) and to pronounce the wording of the Iqamah once (in singles), except “qad qama-tis-salah.”

(B) Issa bin Talha narrated that he heard Mu’awiyyah (radhiAllahu`anhu) repeating the words of the Adhan up to ‘wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasul-Ullah.’

(Sahih al-Bukhari; Adhan, Chapter: What to say on hearing the Adhan, Hadith 612)

(C) Yahya narrated: Some of my companions told me that Hisham said, ‘When the Mu’adhin said, ‘hayya alas-salah (come for the prayer), Mu’awiyyah said: “Laa hawla wa laa quw-wata illa billah” (There is no might or power except with Allaah), and added, “We heard your Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) saying the same.’”

(Sahih al-Bukhari; Adhan, Chapter: What to say on hearing the Adhan, Hadith 613)

(16) Adhan when it is raining

Ibn Abbaas (radhiAllahu`anhu) narrated that he addressed the people on a (rainy and) muddy day and when the Mu’adhin said, ‘haiya alas-Salaah’ (come for the salaah), Ibn Abbaas (radhiAllahu’anhu) ordered him to say ‘As-Salaah fir-rihaal’ (perform salaah in your homes). The people began to look at each other in surprise as if they did not like it. Ibn Abbaas (radhiAllahu anhu) said, ‘it seems that you thought ill of it (ie, of the addition to the adhan) but no doubt it was done by one who was better than I (ie, the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam). It (the salaah) is a strict order and I disliked bringing you out (with your legs covered with mud).”

(Sahih al-Bukhari; Adhan, Chapter: Can the Imaam perform salaah with only those who are present, Hadith 668)

(17) Turning the neck while pronouncing the Adhan

Abu Juhaifah (radhiAllahu`anhu) narrated: “I saw Bilaal (radhiAllahu’anhu) calling for the Salah and I would follow (looking at) his mouth (as he moved it) to the (right) side and the (left) side with his fingers in his ears.”

(Tirmidhi, As-Salaat; Chapter: Entering the fingers in ears while pronouncing Adhan, Hadith: 197)

(18) Charging (money) for pronouncing the Adhan

Uthman bin Abi Al-Aas (radhiAllahu`anhu) stated that the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) appointed him chief of his community and ordered him: “Appoint a man as a Mu’adhin who does not charge (money) for pronouncing the Adhan.”

(Abu Dawood, As-Salaat, Chapter: Charging for Adhan, Hadith 531)

12

(19) Salaah between Adhan and Iqaamah

Abdullah bin Mughffal al-Muzani (radhiAllahu`anhu) narrated that the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said thrice: “There is a salaah between the two adhaans” (ie, adhan and iqaamah); “There is a salaah between the two adhaans” ...and then while saying it the third time he (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) added, “for the one who wants to (pray that salaah).”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Adhan, Chapter: Between every two calls there is a Salaah, Hadith 627)

(20) When the people should stand up

Abu Qatadah (radhiAllahu`anhu) narrated that the Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “If the Iqaamah is pronounced then do not stand for Salaah till you see me (in front of you)”.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Adhan, Chapter: When should the people get up for the Salaah if they see the Imaam during the Iqaamah, Hadith 637)

V. The Sutrah and the Salaah

(21) The Sutra: its importance and obligation

(A) Abu Dharr (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “When one of you stands for Salaah, there should be an object before him, like a saddle...[to the end of the hadith]”

(Sahih Muslim, As-Salaah, Chapter: The limit of the Sutrah for the one who is praying, Hadith 510)

(B) Narrated Nafi: Ibn Umar (radhiAllahu anhumah) said: “The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to make his she-camel sit across and he would offer Salaah facing it (as a Sutra).” I asked, “whould would the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) do if the she-camel was provoked and moved?” He said, “he (salallahu alayhiwasallam) would take its camel-saddle and put it in front of him and offer Salah facing its back part (as a Sutra)” And Ibn Umar (radhiAllahu anhumah) used to do the same.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of as-Salaah, Chapter: To offer as-Salaah facing a Rahila (mount) a camel, a tree, or a camel-saddle (etc, as a Sutra), Hadith 507)

NOTES:The height of the Sutra should be at least equal to the rear part of a camel’s saddle. Its approximate measure is about one foot. If nothing is available, a mace (rod or staff) can serve the purpose of sutra; and if even that is not available, some scholars say that a line can be drawn on the ground as given in the (daif) narration of Abu Da’ud.

(Notes to Hadith 181, The Book of Prayer, Bulugh al-Maram (ibn Hajr), Darussalam publication)

VI. The Imaam and the followers (in Salaah)

(22) Facing the followers while straightening the rows

Narated Anas bin Malik (radhiAllahu anhu): Once the Iqama was pronounced, and Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wassallam) faced us and said, “Straighten your rows and stand closer together, for I see you from behind my back.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Chapter: Facing of the Imaam towards his followers while straightening the rows, Hadith 719)

(23) Standing shoulder-to-shoulder and foot-to-foot in the row

An Nu-man bin Bashir said, “I saw that every one of us used to put his heel with the heel of his companion.”

Narrated Anas bin Malik (radhiAllahu anhu): the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “Straighten your rows for I see you from behind my back.” Anas added, “Everyone of us used to put his shoulder with the shoulder of his companion and his foot with the foot of his companion.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Chapter: To stand shoulder to shoulder and foot to foot in the row, Chapter Introduction and Hadith 725)

(24) Saying Ameen aloud by the Imam

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radhiAllahu anhu): The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) said,“Say Ameen when the Imaam says it, and if the Ameen of any one of you coincides with that of the angels, then all his past sins will be forgiven.” Ibn Shihab said, “Allaah’s Messenger (Salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to say “Ameen”.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Chapter: Saying of Ameen aloud by the Imaam, Hadith 780)

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radhiAllahu anhu): Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Say Ameen when the Imaam says ‘ghairil maghdubi alaihim waladaal-leen’; all the past the past sins of the person whose saying (of Ameen) coincides with that of the angels, will be forgiven.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Chapter: Saying of Ameen aloud by the follwers, Hadith 782)

Ata said: “Ameen is dua (an invocation)”.

Ibn Az-Zubair and the persons behind him said Amin loudly till the mosque echoed. Abu Hurairah used to say to the Imaam “Do not say Amin before me (ie before I join the row for the prayer). Nafi said: “Ibn Umar never missed ‘Ameen’, and urged the people to say it. I heard something good about it from him.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Introduction to Chapter 111: Saying of Ameen aloud by the Imaam)

(26) Start to prostrate only AFTER the Imam prostrates

(A) Narrated al-Bara (and he was not a liar): “When Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said “Sami Allahu liman hamidah”, none of us bent our backs (for prostration) until the Prophet (Salallahu alayhi wa sallam) prostrated and then we would prostrate after him.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Chapter: When should those who are behind the Imaam prostrate?, Hadith 690)

(B) Al Baraa, radhiAllahu anhu, narrated: “They (the Companions) used to pray with the Messenger of Allaah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, and they bowed when he bowed, and when he raised his head after bowing, he called ‘Sami-Allahu liman hamidah’, and we kept standing until we saw him place his face on the ground, and then we followed him.”

(Sahih Muslim, The Book of Salaah, Chapter: Following the Imaam, and acting after him, Hadith 317 (Abridged Sahih Muslim))

NOTE: See also: #38.

(27) Carrying a child

Abu Qatada al-Ansari (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: “Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) was offering Salaah and he was carrying Umama the daughter of Zainab, the daughter of Allah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) and she was the daughter of As bin Rabi bin Abd-Shams. When he prostrated, he put her down and when he stood, he carried her (on his neck)."

(Sahih Al Bukhari, Book of As-Salaah, Chapter: If a small girl is carried on one’s neck during Salah, Hadith 516)

(28) The Imaam faces the followers after the Salaah

Narrated Samura bin Jundab (radhiAllahu anhu): “The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to face us on completion of the Salaah.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Chapter: The Imaam should face the followers after finishing the prayer with Taslim, Hadith 845)

VII. Actions in the Salaah

(29a) Raising the hands before and after Ruku (“raful-yadain”)

(A) Narrated Salim bin Abdullah: My father said, “Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the Salaah; and on saying the Takbir for bowing (ruku); And on raising up his head from bowing he used to do the same and then say ‘Sami Allahu liman hamida, Rabbana wa lakal hamd.’ And he did not do that (ie, raising the hands) in prostrations.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith #735)

SEE ALSO: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Chapter: To raise both hands while saying Takbir (on opening the Salah), and while bowing and on raising up the head (after bowing), Hadith #736 and #737.

(B) Wa’il bin Hujr (radhiallah anhu) narrated that he saw the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) raising his hands at the time of beginning the Salat and reciting Takbir (and according to Hammaam the narrator: the hands were lifted opposite the ears). He wrapped his hands in his cloth and placed his right hand over his left hand. And when he was about to bow down, he brought out his hands from the cloth, and then raised them, and then recited Takbir and bowed down; and when he said: ‘Sami Allahumliman hamida’, he raised his hands, and when he prostrated himself he prostrated between his two palms.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 401, which is Hadith 277 in Summarized Sahih Muslim)

(C) Ali (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to raise his hands in the beginning of Salaah, before bowing for Ruku’, and after raising his head from Ruku’, and when he stood up after performing two Rak’ahs.

(Abu Dawood, As-Salaat, Chapter: About raising the hands when one stands after 2 rakaahs, Hadith #744); See also Hadith 739, Sahih al-Bukhari.

(29b) Three hadith incorrectly used for not raising the hands

(I) Jabir bin Samurah (radhiAllahu anhu) has stated that the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “How is it that I see you raising your hands as if these are tails of headstrong horses? Be tranquil in Salaah.” (Muslim, As-Salat, Hadith 430)

This Hadith does not mention when in the Salaah the Companions (radhiAllahu anhum) were raising their hands and were thereby forbidden. Further, in Sahih Muslim, there are two ahadith from Jabir (radhiAllahu anhu) that makes this point perfectly clear:

Jabir bin Samurah (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: “When we performed Salaah with the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam), we said: (in Taslim): ‘As-Salamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah’ and motioned with our hands on both sides (ie, raised the hands after each Taslim like one raises his hand when he is greeting another). Upon this, the Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Why do you motion with your hands as if they are the tails of headstrong horses? It is enough for you to place your hand on your thigh and then make Taslim (turning the head while saying Salam when concluding the Salah) to your brother on the right side and then on the left.” (Muslim, as-Salaat, Hadith 431 [311 in summerized Sahih Muslim])

Imaam an-Nawawi has stated in his book (al-Majmu): “To infer from this Hadith of Jabir bin Samurah (radhiAllahu anhu) that raising the hands in Salaah is not necessary while bending for Ruku and after rising from Ruku is a strange argument and a sign of vile ignorance of the Sunnah, because this hadith does not pertain to raising the hands in Salah while going to Ruku and raising from it. It is related to the prohibition of making signs with both the hands at the time of Taslim in Tashahud. The People of Hadith (Muhadithin) and those like them have no difference of opinion on this issue.”

(II) Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radhiAllahu anhu) said: “Should I not tell you about the Prophet’s salaah? He performed salaah and did not raise his hands, except for the first time.” (Abu Dawood, as-Salaah, Hadith 748)

After this hadith, Imaam Abu Dawood has stated: “This hadith is not correct in this wording.” Imaam Tirmidhi has quoted the saying of Abdullah bin Mubarak in connection to this that: “Abdullah bin Mas’ud’s hadith about abandoning the raising of the hands in Salaah is not proven correct” Imaam ibn Hibban has said that this narration has many defects which make it invalid.

19

Page 20: 40 Hadith - Trini Muslimsdownloads.trinimuslims.com/Docs/hadith/FINAL_40...40 Hadith pertaining to the Salaah (that are perhaps sometimes forgotten) A reminder for my brothers in Trinidad

(III) Bara bin Azib (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: “The Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to raise his hands up to the ears at the beginning of the salah. He did not raise them again.” (Abu Dawood, as-Salaah, Hadith 749):

Imaam an-Nawawi says Sufian bin Oyaina graded this hadith Daeef (unauthentic). Imam Shafi, Imam Humaidi (Imam Bukhari’s teacher), Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal also regard it as Daeef because Yazeed bin Abi Ziyad did not say “He did not raise them again” at first... he added these words on the instruction of the people of Kufa.

(30) Placing the hands on the floor before the knees (for Sujuud)

Abu Hurairah (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “When one of you performs sajdah, he should not kneel like a camel, but should place his hands before his knees.”

(Abu Dawood, as-Salaat, Chapter: How one should place one’s knees before the hands, Hadith 840)

Also, Imaam Bukhari mentions in his Sahih, in the Chapter (128) “One should say takbir while going in prostration”: Nafi said: “Ibn Umar used to place both his hands (on the ground) before his knees.”

See The Prophet’s Prayer Described, Chapter: Going Down Into The Sajdah On The Hands, and discussion in its footnotes (Shaykh al-Albanee)

(31) Keeping the arms widely separated (in Sujuud)

(A) Abdullah bin Malik bin Huhaina (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: “Whenever the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) performed Salah, (in prostration) he used to keep his arms widely separated (from his body) so much so that the whiteness of his armpits was visible.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Adhan, Chapter: During the prostrations one should keep one’s arms away from one’s sides, Hadith 807)

(B) Maimunah (rahdhiAllahu anha), the wife of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wa sallam narrated: “When the Messenger of Allaah salAllahu alayhi wa sallam prostrated himself, if a lamb wanted to pass between his arms, it could pass.”

(Sahih Muslim, as-Salaat, Chapter: Comprehensive description of the Salaah, Hadith 496)

20

Page 21: 40 Hadith - Trini Muslimsdownloads.trinimuslims.com/Docs/hadith/FINAL_40...40 Hadith pertaining to the Salaah (that are perhaps sometimes forgotten) A reminder for my brothers in Trinidad

(32) Pointing the toes to the Qiblah (in Sujuud)

Abu Humaid as-Sai’di (rathiAllahu anhu) said, I remember the Salaah of Allah’s Messenger salallahu alayhi wa sallam better than any of you: “... In prostration, he placed both his hands on the ground with the forearms away from his body, and his toes were facing the Qiblah. …”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 828)

(33) Sitting of rest (after Sujuud), and supporting when getting up

Ayyub narrated: Abu Qilabah said, Malik bin Huwairith (radhiAllahu anhu) came to us and led us in Salah in this masjid of ours and said: I lead you in Salah just to show you how Allaah’s Messenger salallahu alayhi wa sallam performed his Salaah.”. I asked Abu Qilabah, “How was the salah of Malik bin Huwairith?” He replied, “Like the salaah of this Shaykh of ours (ie, Amr bin Salamah).” That Shaykh used to pronounce the Takbir perfectly and when he raised his head from the second prostration he would sit for a while, and then support himself on the ground and get up.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Adhan, Chapter: How to support oneself on the ground while standing up after finishing the Rakah, Hadith 824)

NOTE (from, Shaykh al-Albani's book): This sitting is known as jalsah al-istiraahah (the sitting of rest) by the scholars of fiqh. ash-Shaafi'ee supported it, as did Ahmad in Tahqeeq (111/1). Ibn Haanee said in his Masaa`il of Imaam Ahmad (p. 42), "I saw Abu `Abdullaah (i.e. Imaam Ahmad) sometimes leaning on his hands when standing up for the next rak`ah, and sometimes sitting straight and then getting up." It was also the preference of Imaam Ishaaq bin Raahawayh, who said in Marwazee's Masaa`il (1/147/2), "The example was set by the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) of supporting himself with his hands when getting up, whether he was old or young." See also Irwaa' (2/82-3).

(34) Recitation of the Quran is forbidden in Ruku and Sujud

Ibn Abbas (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: Allaah’s Messenger salallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “I have been forbidden to recite the Quran while bowing or prostrating; so while in the bowing (position) glorify the Rabb (Lord), and while in the prostrating position, be earnest in supplication, for it is fitting that your supplications may be answered.”

(Sahih Muslim, as-Salaat, Chapter: Prohibition of reciting Quran in bowing and prostrations, Hadith 479)

(35) Wearing shoes in the Salaah

“When one of you prays, he should wear his shoes or take them off and put them between his feet, and not harm others with them.”

(Abu Daawood and Bazzaar; al-Haakim declared it saheeh and adh-Dhahabee agreed; See The Prophet’s Prayer Described)

(36) Lengthening the standing after the Ruku (Qauma)

Thabit (radhiAllahu anhu) narrated: “Anas (radhiAllahu anhu) used to demonstrate to us the Salaah of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam and while demonstrating, he used to raise his head from bowing and stand so long that we would say that he had forgotten (the prostration).”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Adhan, Chapter: To stand straight with calmness on raising the head from bowing, Hadith 800)

22

(37) The obligation to seek refuge from 4 things before supplicating after the last tashahud

(A) From Shaykh Al-Albani's book:

He (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) used to say “When one of you has finished the [last] tashahhud, he should seek refuge with Allaah from four things; [saying:

«O Allaah! I truly seek refuge with You] from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of living and dying, and from the evil [trials] of the False Christ. [Then he should supplicate for himself with what occurs to him.]”

(Sahih Muslim, Abu `Awaanah, an-Nasaa.ee and Ibn al-Jaarood in al-Muntaqaa (27). It is given in Irwaa' (350).)

(B) "He (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) would supplicate with it in his own tashahhud." (Abu Daawood and Ahmad with a saheeh sanad.) (C) Also, "he used to teach the Companions (radhi-yAllaahu 'anhum) this the way he taught them Soorahs of the Qur.aan." (Muslim and Abu `Awaanah.)

(38) Following the Imaam (and not preceding him)

(A) Al Baraa, radhiAllahu anhu, narrated: “They (the Companions) used to pray with the Messenger of Allaah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, and they bowed when he bowed, and when he raised his head after bowing, he called ‘Sami-Allahu liman hamidah’, and we kept standing until we saw him place his face on the ground, and then we followed him.”

(Sahih Muslim, The Book of Salaah, Chapter: Following the Imaam, and acting after him, Hadith 317 (Abridged Sahih Muslim))

(B) Abu Hurairah, radhiAllahu anhu, narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Does not the man who lifts his head before the Imaam fear that Allah may turn his shape like that of a donkey?”

(Sahih Muslim, The Book of Salaah, Chapter: It is forbidden to lift head ahead of the Imaam, Hadith 291 (Abridged Sahih Muslim))

NOTE: See also #26.

(39) Prohibition of looking up in Salaah

Abu Hurairah, radhiAllahu anhu, narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam said: “People should avoid lifting their eyes towards the sky while supplicating in Salaah, lest their eyesight be snatched away.”

(Sahih Muslim, The Book of Salaah, Chapter: Prohibition of looking up in Salaah, Hadith 336 (Abridged Sahih Muslim))

(40) Suppressing yawning in Salaah

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, radhiAllahu anhu, narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam said: “When one of you yawns in Salaah, let him suppress as much as he can. Verily, the devil enters inside.” In another narration: “one should keep his hand on the mouth, because the devil enters inside.”

(Sahih Muslim, The Book of Salaah, Chapter: Suppressing yawning in Salaah, Hadith 345 (Abridged Sahih Muslim))

Appendix A: Sayings of the Four Imaams (regarding following the Sunnah)

Extracted from The Prophet's Prayer Described by Sh. Al-Albanee (raheemahullah), which can be found here: http://aa.trinimuslims.com/ilm/?book=the_prophets_prayer.

(1) Imaam Abu Haneefah (raheemahullah)

1. "When a hadeeth is found to be saheeh, then that is my madhhab."

Ibn 'Aabideen in al-Haashiyah (1/63), and in his essay Rasm al-Muftee (1/4 from the Compilation of the Essays of Ibn 'Aabideen), Shaykh Saalih al-Fulaanee in Eeqaaz al-Himam (p. 62) and others. Ibn 'Aabideen quoted from Sharh al-Hidaayah by Ibn al-Shahnah al-Kabeer, the teacher of Ibn al-Humaam, as follows: "When a hadeeth contrary to the Madhhab is found to be saheeh, one should act on the hadeeth, and make that his madhhab. Acting on the hadeeth will not invalidate the follower's being a Hanafee, for it is authentically reported that Abu Haneefah said: 'When a hadeeth is found to be saheeh, then that is my madhhab', and this has been related by Imaam Ibn 'Abdul Barr from Abu Haneefah and from other imaams."

2. "It is not permitted (halaal) for anyone to accept our views if they do not know from where we got them." In one narration, "It is prohibited (haraam) for someone who does not know my evidence to give verdicts (fatwaa) on the basis of my words."

Ibn 'Abdul Barr in Al-Intiqaa' fee Fadaa.il ath-Thalaathah al-A'immah al-Fuqahaa' (p. 145), Ibn al-Qayyim in I'laam al-Muwaqqi'een (2/309), Ibn 'Aabideen in his Footnotes on Al-Bahr ar-Raa.iq (6/293) and in Rasm al-Muftee (pp. 29,32) and Sha'raanee in Al-Meezaan (1/55) with the second narration. The last narration was collected by 'Abbaas ad-Dawri in At- Taareekh by Ibn Ma'een (6/77/1) with a saheeh sanad on the authority of Zafar, the student of Imaam Abu Haneefah. Similar narrations exist on the authority of Abu Haneefah's companions Zafar, Abu Yoosuf and 'Aafiyah ibn Yazeed; cf. Eeqaaz (p. 52). Ibn al-Qayyim firmly certified its authenticity on the authority of Abu Yoosuf in I'laam al-Muwaqqi'een (2/344). The addition to the second narration is referenced by the editor of Eeqaaz (p. 65) to Ibn 'Abdul Barr, Ibn al-Qayyim and others.

3. "When I say something contradicting the Book of Allaah the Exalted or what is narrated from the Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), then ignore my saying."

Al-Fulaanee in Eeqaaz al-Himam (p. 50), tracing it to Imaam Muhammad and then saying, "This does not apply to the mujtahid, for he is not bound to their views anyway, but it applies to the muqallid."

Sha'raanee expanded on that in Al-Meezaan (1/26): If it is said: 'What should I do with the

25

Page 26: 40 Hadith - Trini Muslimsdownloads.trinimuslims.com/Docs/hadith/FINAL_40...40 Hadith pertaining to the Salaah (that are perhaps sometimes forgotten) A reminder for my brothers in Trinidad

ahaadeeth which my Imaam did not use, and which were found to be authentic after his death?' The answer which is fitting for you is: 'That you act on them, for had your Imaam come across them and found them to be authentic, he would have instructed you to act on them, because all the Imaams were captives in the hand of the Sharee'ah.' He who does so will have gathered all the good with both his hands, but he who says, 'I will not act according to a hadeeth unless my Imaam did so', he will miss a great amount of benefit, as is the case with many followers of the Imaams of the Madhhabs. It would be better for them to act on every hadeeth found to be authentic after the Imaam's time, hence implementing the will of the Imaams; for it is our firm belief about the Imaams that had they lived longer and come to know of those ahaadeeth which were found authentic after their time, they would have definitely accepted and acted according to them, ignoring any analogies they may have previously made, and any views they may have previously held."

(2) Imaam Maalik ibn Anas (raheemahullah)

1. "Truly I am only a mortal: I make mistakes (sometimes) and I am correct (sometimes). Therefore, look into my opinions: all that agrees with the Book and the Sunnah, accept it; and all that does not agree with the Book and the Sunnah, ignore it."

Ibn 'Abdul Barr in Jaami' Bayaan al-'Ilm (2/32), Ibn Hazm, quoting from the former in Usool al-Ahkaam (6/149), and similarly Al-Fulaanee (p. 72).

2. "Everyone after the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) will have his sayings accepted and rejected - not so the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)."Ibn 'Abdul Haadee declared it saheeh in Irshaad as-Saalik (227/1); Ibn 'Abdul Barr in Jaami' Bayaan al-'Ilm (2/91) and Ibn Hazm in Usool al-Ahkaam (6/145, 179) had narrated it as a saying of Al-Hakam ibn 'Utaibah and Mujaahid; Taqee ad- Deen as-Subkee gave it, delighted with its beauty, in al-Fataawaa (1/148) as a saying of Ibn 'Abbaas, and then said: "These words were originally those of Ibn 'Abbaas and Mujaahid, from whom Maalik (radhi-yAllaahu 'anhu) took them, and he became famous for them." It seems that Imaam Ahmad then took this saying from them, as Abu Daawood has said in Masaa.il of Imaam Ahmad (p. 276): "I heard Ahmad say, 'Everyone is accepted and rejected in his opinions, with the exception of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)'."

3. Ibn Wahb said: "I heard Maalik being asked about cleaning between the toes during ablution. He said: 'The people do not have to do that.' I did not approach him until the crowd had lessened, when I said to him, 'We know of a sunnah about that.' He said: 'What is that ?' I said: 'Layth ibn Sa'd, Ibn Lahee'ah and 'Amr ibn al-Haarith narrated to us from Yazeed ibn 'Amr al-Ma'aafiri from Abu 'Abdur-Rahman al-Hubuli from Mustawrid ibn Shaddaad al-Qurashee who said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) rubbing between his toes with his little finger.' He said: 'This hadeeth is sound; I had not heard of it at all until now.' Afterwards, I heard him being asked about the same thing, on which he ordered cleaning

between the toes."

From the Introduction to Al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel of Ibn Abee Haatim, pp. 31-2.

(3) Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee (raheemahullah)

Ibn Hazm says in Usool al-Ahkaam (6/118): "Indeed, all the fuqahaa' whose opinions are followed were opposed to taqleed, and they forbade their companions from following their opinion blindly. The sternest among them in this regard was ash-Shaafi'ee (rahima-hullaah), for he repeatedly emphasised, more than anyone else, following the authentic narrations and accepting whatever the proof dictated; he also made himself innocent of being followed totally, and announced this to those around him. May this benefit him in front of Allaah, and may his reward be of the highest, for he was the cause of great good."

1. "The sunnahs of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) reach, as well as escape from, every one of us. So whenever I voice my opinion, or formulate a principle, where something contrary to my view exists on the authority of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), then the correct view is what the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) has said, and it is my view."

Related by al-Haakim with a continuous sanad up to Shaafi'ee, as in Taareekh Dimashq of Ibn 'Asaakir (15/1/3), I'laam al-Muwaqqi'een (2/363, 364) and Eeqaaz (p. 100).

2. "The Muslims are unanimously agreed that if a sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) is made clear to someone, it is not permitted (halaal) for him to leave it for the saying of anyone else."

Ibn al-Qayyim (2/361) and Fulaanee (p. 68)

3. "If you find in my writings something different to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), then speak on the basis of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), and leave what I have said." In one narration: "... then follow it (the Sunnah), and do not look sideways at anyone else's saying."

Harawee in Dhamm al-Kalaam (3/47/1), Khateeb in Al-Ihtijaaj bi ash-Shaafi'ee (8/2), Ibn 'Asaakir (15/9/10), an-Nawawee in al-Majmoo' (1/63), Ibn al-Qayyim (2/361) and Fulaanee (p. 100); the second narration is from Hilyah al-Awliyaa' of Abu Nu'aym.

27

Page 28: 40 Hadith - Trini Muslimsdownloads.trinimuslims.com/Docs/hadith/FINAL_40...40 Hadith pertaining to the Salaah (that are perhaps sometimes forgotten) A reminder for my brothers in Trinidad

4. "When a hadeeth is found to be saheeh, then that is my madhhab."

an-Nawawee in Al-Majmoo' (1/63), Sha'raanee (1/57), giving its sources as al-Haakim and al-Bayhaqee, and Fulaanee (p. 107). Sha'raanee said: "Ibn Hazm said: 'That is, ...found to be saheeh by him or by any other Imaam'."

5. Addressing Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal: "You are more knowledgeable about Hadeeth than I, so when a hadeeth is saheeh, inform me of it, whether it is from Kufah, Basrah or Syria, so that I may take the view of the hadeeth, as long as it is saheeh."

Related by Ibn Abee Haatim in Aadaab ash-Shaafi'ee (pp. 94-5), Abu Nu'aym in Hulyah al-Awliyaa' (9/106), al-Khateeb in al-Ihtijaaj bish-Shaafi'ee (8/1), and from him Ibn 'Asaakir (15/9/1), Ibn 'Abdul Barr in al-Intiqaa' (p. 75), Ibn al-Jawzee in Manaaqib al-Imaam Ahmad (p. 499) and Harawee (2/47/2) with three routes from 'Abdullaah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal from his father that ash-Shaafi'ee said to him: ...etc; thus, it is authentic on the authority of Shaafi'ee. This is why Ibn al-Qayyim attributed it definitely to him in I'laam (2/325), as did Fulaanee in Eeqaaz (p. 152) and then said: "Bayhaqee said: 'This is why he - i.e. ash-Shaafi'ee - used hadeeth so much, because he gathered knowledge from the people of Hijaaz, Syria, Yemen and 'Iraq, and so accepted all that he found to be authentic, without leaning towards or looking at what he had considered out of the Madhhab of the people of his land when the truth was clear to him elsewhere. Some of those before him would limit themselves to what they found in the Madhhab of the people of their land, without attempting to ascertain the authenticity of what opposed it. May Allaah forgive all of us'."
