3 rd Sunday: Piston Ring Meeting
REDAKSIONEEL
EDITORIAL
Thanks for everybody who helped me compiling the newsletter and keeping it
interesting. I will however continue as an active POMC member, trying to recruit
new members with every opportunity where car talk is involved.
You do not know how much time and effort the current committee is putting in, for
free, to keep POMC as one of the best car clubs in South Africa, looking at the 50
year existence book, Cars in The Park, Mampoer and Magnum rallies, to name but a
few outstanding achievements.

UIT DIE BESTUURSSITPLEK……………….FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT
College se opedag ondersteun sedert ons vorige Nuusbrief.
Kitty Hawk Aircraft and Classic Car Day
Even the Executive Mayor of Pretoria, the honourable Mr. Solly
Msimanga, attended with four of his own vehicles and as a member of his motor club!
The annual Magnum Rally also turned out to be a very successful event with 53 participants, albeit only 9
from the POMC. Thank you Leo and your team (mainly POMC members) for all the arrangements, behind
the desk and at the road side. The routes were very interesting and proved challenging, whilst the social
events, meals and accommodation was superb!
Berto and Claude represented the POMC at the SAVVA annual general meeting in Durban. This proved to
be a valuable event to interact with other clubs, raise some concerns and take note of developments in the
veteran and vintage car environment.
lede insette kon lewer.
Please ensure that you’re SMS and e-mail addresses are in order. If you have any uncertainty and do not
receive the newsletter or notifications from the club, please contact Taco Kamstra to have this corrected.
Also check with our fellow members if they experience difficulties in this regard so that we can reach every
member that has been lost in cyberspace!.

LAZARUS GROUP CELEBRATES 60 YEARS AT CARS IN THE PARK
By Roger Houghton
The Lazarus Motor Group, the largest and arguably one of the best dealers in Tshwane, used its
sponsorship of the very popular Cars in the Park festival as part of the programme to celebrate the
company’s 60-year history, with fourth generation family members now in the business, which is highly
unusual in a successful company like Lazarus.
Reggie Lazarus founded the company in Bronkhorstspruit, with his son Gerry, in December 1957 and it was
aptly named R. Lazarus and Son. Initially it was
granted a Mercedes-Benz franchise but this
agency was relinquished in 1961 in favour of the
Ford franchise. Colin Lazarus, the current CEO of
the Lazarus Motor Group, joined his father in the
business in 1979 and moved it to Centurion in
1991. Now his sons Ross and Dean work alongside
their father as the fourth generation of the family.
Lazarus Motor Group, situated in Centurion
alongside the N1 highway, is nowadays a huge,
multi-franchise operation, but Ford was the brand
under the spotlight at Zwartkops Raceway on
August 6. The Ford brand is ideal for such an
event as it offers an excellent walk through the
various eras of global automotive development.
On this occasion, it started at the beginning with a replica of the Quadricycle on display. This was the first
car built by Henry Ford in 1893. The model on show was built by apprentices at the Ford factory in Port
Elizabeth in 1974.
The impressive, Lazarus-inspired Ford display at Zwartkops went through T, N, and B models to several of
the latest Mustangs. As usual there were scores of other Ford models on display around the track, from an
immaculate Prefect to Cortina’s, Anglia’s, Escorts, and lots of American Fords.
As usual the Pretoria Old Motor Club’s annual Cars in the Park brought together an amazing collection of
more than 2 000 cars from 100 clubs which were displayed around the track. This was the 38th CITP
organised by the POMC and again attracted many thousands of enthusiasts and showed that South Africa’s
love affair with the motor vehicle is alive and very well.
What was strange was the attraction of the various rat rods that use decrepit bits of junk welded or
chained onto rusty cars or bakkies. These creations drew crowds of onlookers while alongside them were

beautifully restored or customised cars with high
tech engines painted and chromed so they
gleamed in the sun but often attracted few
passers-by. Different strokes for different folks!
Once again there seemed to be a drop off in the
number of true classics like Lotus Cortina’s, Capri
Perana’s the like as well as pre-WW2 models and
with the fear that many of these models are
being shipped overseas where there is big money
and a strong demand waiting.
A special tribute must be paid to chief organiser
Frik Kraamwinkel and his team from the Pretoria
Old Motor Club who put on such a great event year after year. It is a mammoth task and runs smoothly.

Imagine racing this Austin/Nash Metropolitan! No wonder it is named Noddy and has the nickname “Flying
Fridge”. It was built by Austin in England and sold by them and by Nash in the US. It had an Austin A40
powertrain and was built between 1954 and 1962.

There was an excellent turn-out of Minis, as usual.
Many Land Rovers were on display. This forward-control model – probably ex-SA Defence Force – makes an

SAVVA Technical Tip 124 – Priming carburettors
Priming carbs after a car has been standing for some time has always been a problem. A solution often used is to fit an electric fuel pump to prime the system. However, on very early cars this can be difficult especially if they have a six volt system or an early carb with a needle and seat of dubious quality. A solution has been forwarded by Ian Otridge – it’s so simple. To quote Ian: “I got around the problem of priming the carb on my 1929 Chev by fitting a rubber bulb, the same as fitted to outboard motors. I fitted it between the tank and fuel pump. I now just squeeze it until it gets firm and the car starts at the first turn. It was cheap, simple to install and easy to hide, and works like a dream.”
Many thanks Ian.
For those of you who haven’t owned outboard motors - You have a petrol tank which stands somewhere in the boat and is connected to the engine with
a length of flexible rubber hose. To prime the system there is a “squeezy” rubber bulb in the line. One simply squeezes the bulb which sucks petrol from the tank and in turn pushes it into the carb. When the carb is full the bulb becomes firm. Basically, it is a rubber bulb with a non-return valve much the same as fitted to a mechanical fuel pump. It does the same job but without having to crank the engine.

Wiping away Moisture
For wiping away moisture that has condensed on your windshield or
side windows and made visibility difficult, a handy squeegee can be
improvised from an old windshield-wiper blade. To facilitate using
the blade, a jumbo-type, spring paper clip may be attached to its
back. D. B. J.
