A very personal yacht, she conveys serenity and privacy, along with

a youthful, sociable spirit. There’s no doubt that historic German shipyard Lürssen– known for building colossal warships – is used to dealing with gigantic dimensionsfor military vessels and private yachts alike.Indeed, judging by the jaw-dropping size of the yard’s recent and current builds, gigantic is the only way to describe them. Last year, Lürssen delivered Martha Ann (70 m), completing the trilogy of threesisterships, each measuring 230 feet, and each commissioned by the same Owner. The trilogy began in 2006 with the launch of Apoise,; she was followed by theSaint Nicolas in 2007, presented in a lengthy article last year in issue number 8 ofYacht Première; and the trilogy was concluded in 2008 when Martha Anna tookto the water. The latter was presented earlier this year in issue number 10 of Yacht Première.In the past year, Lürssen Yachts has delivered some four other superyachts inaddition to Martha Ann.Namely, the 155-metre Al Said,; the 110-metre Dilbar,; Vive la Vie (60 m,), andlastly, Madsummer, a 78-metre yacht, featured in this issue of Yacht Première. Withher contract drawn up back in 2005 and delivery made in late 2008, Madsummer

immediately left for her first cruise in the Caribbean, and has spent the summerseason in the Med, where her routes coincided with Kismet (68 m / 223 ft); Kismetwas delivered by the same yard at the beginning of 2007.Kismet was featured two years ago in issue number 5 of Yacht Première. Both yachtshave spent the summer on private charter cruises managed by Moran Yacht&Ship,a yacht brokerage company based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.Moran Yacht&Ship also specialises in construction consulting and yachtmanagement and in fact Robert Moran himself supervised the Madsummer project, which was also developed together with Captain Chris Beirne, representing theOwner. Both these professionals brought their immense experience and expertise to theproject, working closely with Lürssen Yachts.

The main dimensional and technical dataAssigned hull no. 13650, Madsummer was completed at Lürssen Yachts’ facilitiesin Rendsburg on the Kiel Canal. She was built using steel for the hull and aluminiumfor the superstructure. The new naval unit respects the Lloyd’s Register of Shippingclassification, Maltese Cross 100A1 SSC Yacht mono G6, LMC UMS and MCAstandards. Madsummer’s length overall is nearly 78.5 metres, or 257 ft, with a lengthat waterline of nearly 67 metres, or 219 ft.Her maximum beam is 13.5 metres (just over 44 feet); her hull’s draught when fullyloaded is just under 4 metres, nearly 12 and a half feet, while she displaces 1978tons. Madsummer’s engine room is installed with twin V 16 Caterpillar engines, fromthe CAT 3516C DiTA SCAC series. Each of these has 78 litres of displacement(around 4765 cc), with a maximum output of 2682 bhp (2000 bkW), supplied at

1600 rpm. The two engines are combined with Reintjes reduction gearboxes andconnected via transmission shafts to twin fixed-pitch propulsion propellers byPiening. This powerplant allows Madsummer to maintain an economy cruising speedof 12 knots and reach a top speed of 17 knots. At 12 knots, her range is nearly 6 thousand nautical miles, using fuel tanks with acapacity of 126 thousand litres, equivalent to nearly 33,400 US gallons.Madsummer’s freshwater tanks can hold 40 thousand litres (around 10,600 USgallons) and are supplied by a Hem system with two watermakers, each producing25 thousand litres of water daily (around 6,600 US gallons). The yacht’s wastewatersystem also includes a tank for collecting treated water, which can hold 5 thousandlitres (more than 1,300 US gallons); this keeps the treated water on board to avoidreleasing it into protected natural environments.

On the Owner’s deck, the lounge hasa veranda overlooking the aft deck,

shaded by the helipad platformabove. With teak wood flooring,

it has sliding glass doors to allowdiners the choice between an indoor

or outdoor dining experience.

Madsummer’s hull has Rolls Royce steering gear with two high-lift rudders, a240-kW bowthruster and a 200-kW sternthruster, both by Brunvoll, as well as aQuantum zero-speed stabilizer system set up with two pairs of fins, which worksboth during cruising and when moored. Madsummer has four generator units onboard, all based upon six-cylinder inline diesel generators by Caterpillar. The three main generators are from the CAT C18 series: one CAT C18 producing450 ekW / 563 kVA at 1500 rpm and another two CAT C18s producing 275 ekW /344 kVA at 1500 rpm. Then there is the Cat C9 series emergency generator, whichproduces 142 ekW / 178 kVA when running at 1500 rpm.Madsummer’s equipment includes three tenders and four waverunners. A coveredcradle on the fore deck provides storage for the 22-ft (6.5m) Zodiac rescue andservice tender, while the garage on the lower aft deck contains the two main tenders:

one open sport measuring 25 ft (7.5 m), and a 30-ft (9 metres) covered limo. Thegarage also contains four SeaDoo waverunners (RXT 215 model).

The yacht concept and the special featuresLike all of Lürssen Yachts’ vessels, Madsummer is an ocean-going yacht withexcellent performance and seaworthy qualities. She’s suitable for sailing all over theworld and even circumnavigating the globe. Her low-consumption engines and largefuel tanks mean she can achieve such considerable ranges.Above all, though, Madsummer is a high-tech superyacht with a wealth of interestingfeatures. First of all, she offers excellent handling both in port, in narrow spots, andon the open water where, for example, she can change direction with a turningdiameter of less than two lengths of the ship.

She also performs well when it comes to stopping space, managing to slow fromtwelve to zero knots in around a minute, or within 250 metres.Madsummer’s technology is state-of-the-art: her bridge has an integrated bridge andsecurity system with sensors and cameras; furthermore, as in the control room ofthe engine room, for example, she has a full range of instruments that use sensorsand special software to constantly analyze the functioning of the engines and otherequipment. All of the systems and units on board Madsummer were custom-made to satisfy therequests of the client; these include the lighting systems and automation apparatus, the alarm and monitoring systems and those for power production and management. For example, each of the three main generators (contained in soundproof cabinets)is able to single-handedly supply the required amount of energy to keep the yacht

running. Madsummer’s accessories also include a tender bay tank for collectingcontaminated water from tender maintenance work; and a separate high-pressurewashing system for the decks, containing a special 15-thousand-litre tank. Advancedshock absorption systems to reduce noise and vibration guarantee Madsummer’spassengers a calm cruise on board a yacht that is incredibly silent while under power;while a zero speed stabilizer system ensures that passengers are comfortable whenat anchor, considerably reducing the impact of wave motion.Madsummer’s Owner and guests are able to travel to and from the yacht quicklythanks to the helipad on the aft bridge deck, known as the helideck. In addition tothe helipad, the helideck has a full set of equipment including a refuelling station andspecial storage spaces set up to safely pack away the dismantled propeller blades ofthe helicopter when not in use and during cruising.

A select variety of fine hardwoodshas been used to intriguing

effect in Madsummer’s interiors. They are combined together with

other materials such as textiles, marble and metal, creating

harmonious toning accords aswell as bright colour contrasts.

The exterior design and the interior designBuilt by Lürssen Yachts, with exterior design by Espen Øeino, Madsummer is visuallyappealing thanks to her harmonious form and her eye-catching baby blue hull. Aswe said earlier, this colour is traditionally used for much smaller sports vessels, butin this case it sets Madsummer apart from her peers. Even on board, Madsummer’slayout expresses her calling as an absolutely private, intimate yacht.Although her size would have allowed it, Madsummer does not have the grandiosefoyers or imposing staircases typically found on yachts that are designed forostentation and display.. (This sentence does not fit in here – better when the text isabout the technical things) Instead, Madsummer was created for an Owner whovalues his privacy and peace and quiet. Although a very private yacht, she still hasan element of fun sociability, and these qualities are evident in the various differentareas on board. Her reserved character is underlined by the fact that the Owner hasan entire deck to himself, with his own terrace complete with swimming pool andsolarium. But her sociable side comes through on the other decks, designed toaccommodate a considerable number of guests in various areas for entertainmentand relaxation.

The areas set aside for recreation and sport are particularly important on board thisyacht. Guests have a spa area at their disposal, overlooking a fold-down sea terrace. The spa includes a gym, sauna, massage room and hammam; it also has a changingroom leading directly onto the bathing platform for swimming and diving.Madsummer has two pools, both surrounded by sunbeds and sunpads: one has a hottub and the other a jetstream for swimming against the current. A special systemstores the pool water in a conditioning tank so that the pools are always ready for useeven at short notice. Before it is let into the pool, the water is run through a sanitizingsystem; this uses active carbon filters to purify the water, silver ions to disinfect it andUV rays to sterilize it. Madsummer’s interior design is by Alberto Pinto, and she isworlds apart from other, overly formal yachts, with bright, pure colours featuringthroughout her interior. The Owner specifically requested that Madsummer have a

visibly young, sporty look. All of her interior areas are light and airy, elegant andperfectly finished, making them particularly restful to look at. As they move throughthe various spaces, guests will be amazed by the changes in the interior design and inthe freely arranged objects: there’s no risk of becoming bored by monotonous repetitionof the same details over and over again.Elements of surprise lie in store throughout, especially positioned to draw to the gazetowards new, interesting details. A carefully selected variety of hardwoods has beenused, combined to intriguing effect with one another and with other materials such astextiles, marble and metal; the result is a harmonious look that still manages to includecontrasts of bright colours. In the main salon, both the living and dining areas havewood-panelled walls in polka dotted maple, with exotic wood inserts; the sofas areupholstered in white fabric, while some of the furniture is blue.

The bright, panoramic Owner’ssuite is appointed in sucupira and

plane wood. The two His andHer bathrooms have sycamore

flooring; while Her bathroomhas plane wood wall panelling,

and His bathroom has sycamoreand sucupira wall panelling.

In the Owner’s saloon, the living room has Zebrano wood panelling on the walls, whilethe sofas are light blue and some of the furniture is tinted orange. The dining area, bothindoor and outdoor, has teak wood flooring. Sucupira and plane wood have been usedfor the Owner’s suite, while the his and hers bathrooms have sycamore wood flooring.“Her” bathroom has plane wood wall panelling, while “His” bathroom has sycamoreand sucupira panelling. Meanwhile, the lobby, the passageway, and the stairwell havewall-panelling in maple and plane wood, while the details and handrail are in stainlesssteel and leather. Plane wood is also used in the guest suites which, though they are allbasically in the same style, are not identical, as they have been customised withdifferent colours and décor objects. Each cabin, along with its en-suite bathroom, hasits own colour: blue, pink, red, white, yellow. The basic colour is also echoed in theceiling cornices and in the furnishing details, particularly in the fabrics used for theheadboards and bed covers, pillows and cushions. Last but not least, the wheelhouseis in plane and blue leather wood with sycamore inserts; the instrument console, pilot’schair and guest sofas are all upholstered in blue leather.
