No person may sell, offer for sale, barter, or give away as a pet or novelty any rabbit or any baby chick, duckling or other fowl which has been dyed, colored, or otherwise treated to impart an artificial color thereto.

A person convicted of violating this Section would be guilty of a Class B misdemeanor. A second or subsequent violation would be a Class 4 felony, with every day that a violation continues constituting a separate offense. PIJAC Position PIJAC believes that responsible pet ownership begins with informed decisions on the appropriate animal for a customer's needs. An animal's coloring should not be altered in any way that affects its health and well-being. For example, it should be noted that the painting of a shell in no way impacts the hermit crab that dwells within it. The JJW Memorial Conservation Fund has chosen two very exciting programs to support this year:

• Freshwater recipient: American Museum of Natural History - “The Congo Project”

http://research.amnh.org/vz/ichthyology/congo/index_02.html

An updated assessment of aquarium fisheries in the Congo, and identification of opportunities for environmental and socioeconomic benefits. A Principal Collaborator to Dr. Melanie Stiassny, Dr. Victor Mamonekene will oversee student make an updated assessment on aquarium fisheries of the Congo, which will describe conservation opportunities. The report on the outcomes will be used by the newly formed IUCN Home Aquarium Fish Sub-group (HAFSG) of the Freshwater Fish Specialist Group. The HAFSG will build on these findings and seek to promote a robust aquarium trade in the region, maximizing environmental and socioeconomic benefits to the Congo, and keeping a study stream of exciting fishes into the aquarium hobby. The

NEC Conservation funds will be used to provide student stipends and field expenses incurred in order to acquire and summarize up to data finding on the aquarium trade, and related opportunities.

• Marine recipient: “The Nature Conservancy – Coral Triangle”

http://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/asiaandthepacific/coraltriangle/

Early life stage capture of reef fishes for the aquarium trade. In recent years, public aquariums have made very exciting developments in our ability to capture eggs and larvae from some of our giant reef exhibits. The Nature Conservancy Indonesia (TNCI) chapter works closely with reef side resident communities in the South Pacific. TNCI will introduce the egg & larvae capture techniques to some of these fishing communities to make the first determinations if these techniques that have been developed in aquariums, can be transferred to natural coral reefs. If this stage is successful, it will represent a significant step towards shifting wild capture of aquarium fish from adults, to early life stage capture. This will lead us to an entirely new type of fishery which will be not only sustainable, but result in livelihoods for local residents, that will be the guardians of their reef resources. You may donate directly to the JJW fund on the NEC Convention website at http://northeastcouncil.org/NewNEC/index.php/convention as well as participate in the silent auction at our annual NEC Convention. If you would like to donate fish, plants or dry goods for the silent auction, please email David Giza at mailto:[email protected]. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you, David Giza & Scott Dowd

Hello Friends!!! Please note that the Nassau County Aquarium Society now has a Facebook page!! (See link below). What is the difference between this page and our Facebook group you may ask? Well, let me tell you; NCAS's Facebook page is available to anyone (worldwide) on Facebook. Our Facebook group (editor’s note: renamed NCAS Group page) can only be seen by those who have been granted access to the page. By having a Facebook page we can reach more people and hopefully attract some new membership.

Please "like" the new NCAS Facebook page in order to increase our visibility. Also, beginning January 2016 events will only be posted to our Facebook page; so, in order to stay on top of things you must like this page. ACLC October Meeting

Saturday, October 17 at 1:00pm Bird-in-Hand Fire Company in

Bird In Hand, Pennsylvania "Water and the Aquarium" by Joe Gargas

Joe Gargas, a native of the South Suburbs of Chicago, began his interest in Tropical Fish in the mid 60’s when an aunt gave him his first fish tank with guppies. His interested in tropical fish stayed and grew through the teen years which grew into walls of aquariums. In the late 70’s he became a Law Enforcement Officer in the South Suburbs of Chicago. During that time he worked extensively breeding Discus as well as other hard to breed species of fish making extra money in the process. Joe began writing for a number of Aquarium Fish Publications and had a column in one of them that ran for 7 years. He also began teaching a class that he put together at the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago it was “Advanced Freshwater Fish Keeping” This was a 6 week 6 part course that he gave twice a year. In the early 90’s he was approached by the Wardley Corporation in Secaucus, New Jersey (An Aquarium Fish Food Company) and was offered the job as a consultant. At this time he began doing the PIJAC “Freshwater Fish” certification seminar throughout the USA and Canada and the UK speaking on all aspects of the aquarium hobby. In the mid 90’s the Wardley Corporation was bought out by the Hartz Mountain Corporation and Joe was offered the job of the Director of Research for Wardley and he and his family were relocated to the Tampa Bay area where he lives today. Joe lectured World Wide on behalf of the Wardley Corporation on all aspects of Tropical Fish Keeping and developed many products. He currently has a hatchery were he is breeding Discus, Rams and Angelfish selling to breeders and high end stores across the country and is currently an active member of the TBAS Tampa Bay Aquarium Society. Through his research and expertise he has helped aquarists/hobbyists keep their fish alive and remain in the hobby. Joe was granted by the US Government 13 patents on new technologies and applications for Potable Water, Swimming Pools, Fountains and the Aquarium Fish Industry.

Where: The New England Aquarium's Harborside Learning Lab, Boston, MA

When: October 19, 2015 @ 8 PM Speaker: David Banks - Breeding Fish and Getting Started

This is a look at the first steps in starting to breed fish with a look at why and how to breed in general followed by a look at three specific species. General information for the beginner, but also includes some insight that will be useful to more advanced breeders. David is the current president of the Tropical Fish Club of Burlington and co-founded the club in 1989 with his wife Janine. David is past president of the Northeast Council of Aquarium Societies and still holds several positions within that organization. He has been an active breeder of tropical fish for over 25 years, at one time concentrating mainly on African cichlids in his 40-tank fish room. David and Janine have been active in the NEC Breeder Participation Program and are one of only 5 to have ever achieved the plateau of “Master Breeder”. David is also involved in conservation and has always kept space in his tanks for several endangered species, ranging from Lake Victorian cichlids to livebearers and killifish.
