117PUYALLUP TRIBAL FISHERIES: 2003-2004 ANNUAL SALMON, STEELHEAD AND CHAR REPORT .
DESCRIPTION
Voights creek is a left bank tributary to theCarbon river entering at Carbon RM 4.0. It is
currently only surveyed for steelhead due to thepresence of a state hatchery facility at RM 0.5.
The hatchery has
both a chinook
and a cohoprogram, making
n a t u r a le s c a p e m e n t
s u r v e y s
unnecessary.There is a falls
(right) blocking
u p s t r e a m
migration at RM 3.4. Much of the steelhead spawning takesplace from this point down to approximately RM 1.0. This
reach contains excellent if somewhat sporadic gravel within
a moderate gradient stream channel. The riparian zone isa mix of 2nd growth conifer forest and hardwoods but there
is a distinct lack of large woody debris inputs; what little
is present is generally quite old. Below the hatchery waterintake at RM 1.0 the gradient lessens, the substrate size is more consistent although
smaller and somewhat compacted.

DESCRIPTION
The upper reaches ofthe White river are not
surveyed with any
consistency as accurateescapement numbers
are generated from the
Buckley trap counts. The main stem and West
fork White are
characterized bygenerally unconfined,
often braided and
complex channels with
abundant spawninggravels present in pool
tail-outs, margins and
low velocity areas.Woody debris is
abundant although
undersized; much of theriparian zone is either
second growth conifer or
hardwoods except forthe zone through Mt.
Rainier National Park with consist of mostly old
growth. There is approximately 5 miles between MudMountain dam and the Buckley trap at RM 24.3 where
very little spawning takes place due to lack of fish
access between the two facilities. Below this however, and downstream to approximately RM 11 there is
frequent and concentrated use by both chinook and
steelhead. This
reach hasabundant and
excellent spawning gravel. There are two
significant side channels in this reach thatsupport spawning and rearing. One,
approximately a mile long, is located on the rightbank directly below the Shaker church access.
This channel supports both chinook and coho as
well as the highest recent documentation of
chum salmon spawning. Another, not surveyeddue to multiple debris jams blocking access, is

located several miles downstream on the left bank. Aerial surveys have documented
both chinook and steelhead spawning in this reach. From approximately RM 11 downstream the channel is constrained by levees. The
channel from this point loses complexity and there is a marked decrease in both
spawning gravel and spawning activity of all species.
In August of 2003, the cit y of Tacoma
removed its 99 year old concrete pipelinecrossing located at RM 23. The concreteand rebar structure has long been suspectedof injuring migrating salmon. The removalof the old concrete structure involvedplacing two temporary co ffer dams,
constructed from nylon supersacks holdingapproximately 2 tons of gravel each, aboveand below the work area. The White riverwas then diverted around the site v ia atemporary 900 channel. Puyallup tribalfisheries staff contributed to the fish
salvaging efforts during the dewateringportion o f the main channel, as well asthe bypass channel when flow wasreverted back into the main channel ofthe White river. Hundreds of juvenileand adult salmon were recovered and
moved above the work site. Since theremoval of the pipeline, significantlyfewer injuries have been observed on fishcaptured 1.3 mile above at the USACEfish trap in Buckley.

DESCRIPTION
Wilkeson creek is a pool-riffle stream with agravel/cobble substrate. With a few exceptions,
there is abundant spawning gravel throughout
the survey reach. The riparian area consists ofhardwoods and conifers with an understory of
various native shrubs and vegetation. In-stream
woody debris is plentiful providing both channelcomplexity and cover. Between RM 4.6 and 4.0
the stream runs through the town of Wilkeson
and the banks are generally rip-rapped. Verylittle gravel is retained in this reach. The lower 3
miles are very natural, with a heavily
wooded riparian zone, debris jams andmany braided reaches. This stream is a
very productive tributary to SouthPrairie creek but chinook use is oftenlimited due to the extreme low flows
common during late summer. No
chinook were observed in 2002 or 2003due to low flows.

DESCRIPTION
Wrong creek is a small stream enteringPinochle creek approximately 0.5 miles above itsconfluence with the West Fork White river
(bottom). There are small patches of suitable
spawning gravel present, primarily in the
lower portion of this reach. The riparian
zone consists of mature second growthhardwoods and conifers with an
understory of blueberry and salmonberry.
Wrong creek hosts several sizable log jamscontaining numerous key components.
Low fall flow conditions appear to restrictchinook access. This stream was surveyed
for coho and chinook, the chinookobserved are likely returns from the
acclimation pond located on Cripple creek,
another tributary of Pinochle creek.
