Well, right here at your friendly Knights Of Columbus, that’s where! What is the problem? Poor attendance is the problem. All members have to eat so why not bring the family and eat at the Knights? One recent buffet menu included smothered chicken, boneless prime rib and salmon cakes. The sides were corn medley, mashed potatoes, combo of squash/onions/zucchini and snow peas with baby carrots. Where can you go for snack and/or dinner? Well, right here at your friendly Knights Of Columbus, that’s where! What is the problem? Poor attendance is the problem. All members have to eat so why not bring the family and eat at the Knights?

The council hosts a family buffet the first Sunday of most months. A wonderful spread is prepared and waiting for you at the K of C from 2:30-5:30 in the main hall. The food is very good and tasty and the price is right. For $9.00 an adult gets an all-you-can-eat dinner with dessert and coffee/punch included. Children from ages 3 to 10 are charged $4.50. One recent buffet menu included smothered chicken, boneless prime rib and salmon cakes. The sides were corn medley, mashed potatoes, combo of squash/onions/zucchini and snow peas with baby carrots. The salad bar included a variety of salad fixings and dressings rolls and butter. For your sweet tooth delicious cakes and pies were presented for your choosing.

The third Sunday of each month features a full breakfast that is served by friendly folks from 9:00 AM to Noon. Eggs, chipped beef, bacon, scrapple, ham, sausage, grits, fried potatoes and a variety of other special breakfast items, fruit salad and coffee are enough to keep you going until your next meal. The cost for the breakfast is minimal; adults $6.75 and $4.00 for children ages 3-10.

The Council home features more than just beer, wine, sodas and a nice atmosphere. The manager, John E. O’Neill Jr., is there to see that you are given good service and good food. Grand KniGhT’s MessaGeAnother fraternal year has concluded and a new year starts with the installation of of-

ficers on July 4th, 2008. Vince Long, PGK, told me that this year will swiftly pass and that I should enjoy my time as Grand Knight. First I want to thank him for the wonderful job he and all of the officers did this past year. Second I trust that this year’s newly elected officers will continue the tradition of always striving improve E.D.W.

I was recently reminded that as Grand Knight, I am responsible for everything that occurs at E.D.W. Then I was chastised for not knowing everything that has occurred here for the past fifty years. I realize that I do not have a fifty year memory of E.D.W. as a number of members do, so I will definitely ask for help and assistance. I am very grateful to those individuals who have already offered their help and thankful to those people who I know will step up make this a very successful year at E.D.W.

Shortly we will resume our recognition of our members with their fifty and twenty five year membership pins. We will try to arrange this quarterly until we are able to pres-ent these pins to all our deserving members. (Yes, I do understand that there has been a ‘slight’ delay for this recognition.) Your help in identifying our deserving members would be greatly appreciated.

There are many, many different opportunities for us to get involved with at E.D.W. Fraternal activities that we can participate in, social activities we can attend with our friends, and charitable activities where we can assist others. One of the first opportunities to combine fraternal and social activities is on July 4th, with the 11 AM mass with the installation of the new officers followed by holiday picnic. I hope to see many of you at E.D.W. on that day.

who is a very active waiter on one of our ‘Red Coats’ teams. Dan frequently volunteers whenever an additional waiter is needed. Additionally, he also serves as the Assistant Treasurer for the Columbus Club. Thank you Dan on all you have done and all you will continue to do for E.D.W. Please join me in congratulating Dan Metzler for being the July Knight of the Month.

FaMily oF The MonThDennis and Diane Pittman are our July Family of the Month. Dennis started work-

ing at E.D.W. many years ago as a member of the kitchen staff. Dennis and Diane were an integral part of the success of our ‘LUAU BY THE POOL’ on Friday, May 23, 2008. Through their hard work, they prepared an excellent pig roast with delicious sauces, that were greatly enjoyed those of us present that evening. Dennis and Diane brought both the pig and the cooker with them and then skillfully prepared the succulent main course.

Additionally, outside of E.D.W., they sponsor an annual golf tournament to raise funds for charity. Thank you Dennis and Diane on all you have done and all you will continue to do for E.D.W. and others. Please join me in congratulating Dennis and Diane Pittman for being the July Family of the Month.

by Jerry Garren, Fs, PGKCongratulations To the slate of officers elected to serve the

EDW membership during the fraternal year running July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. I am looking forward to working with you over the next year!

EDW, We Have a Budget Attached to this month’s Knight Life you will find a proposed budget that the other officers and I put together for the upcoming fraternal year. Though it contains the “standard stuff,” please take a moment to review it, as the budget will be brought to a vote during the second meeting of July.

Dues Notices The Third Quarter dues notices will be mailed in mid-July. While, ideally, they should go out in the first week of July, I will be on family vacation that week (It’s KaCee’s birthday, too- so make sure to say Happy Birthday if you see her) and won’t return until the second week. If you don’t receive your notice by the end of the month, please telephone me and leave a message so that we can keep you current.

New Members/Recruitment Over the past several months EDW has seen an unprecedented increase in membership- largely due to the efforts of our membership chair, A.J. Valinote (outstanding job, my friend!). This bodes very well for our Council and helps ensure a bright and viable future. However, we recently have had a few new members indicate that they simply attend Catholic Mass and have not formally joined a parish. EDW is a unique Council and does not merely serve a single parish. In fact, we have members living throughout the world! Because of the wide-spread attraction of our facilities, it is becoming increasingly difficult to confirm candidates’ membership in the Roman Catholic Church.

As the Financial Secretary, I am ultimately responsible to en-sure eligibility in the Knights of Columbus and am charged with instituting proper screening procedures for new members. There-fore, effective immediately, all new members will be required to demonstrate that they are Catholic in some manner. This will not be a burdensome requirement and can be easily accomplished in one of several ways: 1) by bringing their family’s weekly parish contribution envelope; 2) by bringing a Baptismal/Holy Commu-nion/Confirmation Certificate; 3) by way of a letter from a Catholic Priest; 4) by sponsorship, where the sponsor is physically present at the First Degree and can attest to the candidate’s association with the Catholic Church; or 5) by legacy (a family member sponsor). Please make sure that your new recruits are able to comply with one of the above.

Social Security recipients and Supplemental Security Income enrollees sometimes do not have a bank account, or use a costly check-cashing outlet, or have trouble getting to the bank to deposit the monthly check.

There is a new service coming from the U. S. Treasury through Comerica Bank. You sign up for a DEBIT CARD and the govern-ment automatically deposits your check each month to fund the card. looking for the next Membership ChairmanIt’s been another good Fraternal year with an unofficial count

approaching 100 new EDW members taking their First Degree or transferring in. Congratulations to those men, many of whom are already attending meetings, Red Coating, and getting involved in other meaningful ways. These healthy numbers are a great improvement over a period of “sluggish” growth.

While this is undeniably good news, work remains in keeping our new members engaged. Too many of our new Knights drift away after joining. One reason suggested by many is that the sheer length and disorganization of the First Degree night was turning off candidates. First impressions are important. Many thanks to our Council Officers, the Degree Team, and our Fraternal Benefits Advisers for helping resolve this by being open to suggestions and implementing some changes. To our existing members; please attend one or more Degrees this year. An empty chamber leaves candidates with the impression that attendance is unimportant or that the Council is apathetic.

Another consequence of our great gains is that at times it has overwhelmed our ability to meet and process prospective mem-bers. This does not benefit the Council or candidates. To address this we are tentatively adopting some changes to normal EDW’s practices.

“Walk-ins” are discouraged whether or not they have a com-pleted Form 100. Many Councils have Admission Commit-tees that meet and interview candidates prior to joining. In the absence of that, we at least need to know of a candidate prior to the Degree. We will never discourage a walk-in from joining EDW, but we reserve the right to ask him to return for the next opportunity. Please do not hand out applications to friends and family and drop them in the office or at the bar. They often get lost or, I get to them too late. The preferred method is to have an interested person contact the Membership Chairman. Give them an EDW “Join Us” card found on the mantel in the Council Home bar and at the office. My contact information is also on the Website and in the Knight Life.

Lastly, I am looking for an interested person to gradually take over as Membership Chairman. What does this job include? Pri-marily, it involves assisting prospective members, answering their questions, and getting them through to their First Degree. It also includes helping to process the candidates at the First Degree and preparing the EDW New Member Folder. It’s a sure way to meet a lot of people and a great way to help the Council. If you are interested in transitioning into this position please contact me or another Council Officer.

K oF C GolF CluB TriP To PinehursT, norTh Carolina

By Paul J. KempOne of the largest contingents of K of C golfers and friends

we’ve had in recent years (32) signed up for the May 18 to 21, 2008 trip to Pinehurst, North Carolina. Some of the more fanatic folk arrived on Saturday, the 17th in order to be completely rested and ready to play come Sunday. On Sunday the weather was absolutely perfect, and it remained that way for the entire trip, except for a little rain at the end of the second day. The first day we played the Little River Course, which turned out to be a challenge, at least for some of us. On Monday we played the Pit, which in some ways puts me in mind of Poe’s story, the Pit and the Pendulum. The course is scary, which may explain why our Captain’s Choice team came in dead last. For those who may have missed it, Dick Ryan had a hole in one on Tobacco Road later that day. Rumor has it that Dick would want to make sure that those who thirst for such knowledge are satisfied. By the third day we had loosened up a bit with the llamas on Talemore, a beautiful golf course requiring accurate drives if you are to avoid the badlands. The fourth day was at Anderson Creek. Having played it at least twice now, I found it a lot of fun, albeit tough.

The scores at Little River were as follows:A Flight - Gross - Bob Haithcock 82Net - Ray Lenco 77B Flight - Gross - John Kozar 88Net - Dick Higdon 76 C Flight - Gross - Tony Gallucio 98Net - Robert Howe 74D Flight - Fred Mears 103Net - Fred Carmichael 76 The results of Captain’s Choice at the Pit were as follows:1st Place, one over par, was divided among three teams: Sinclair,

Ishmael, Gallucio and HARVEY; Haithcock, Bob Howe, Kogut and Mears; Charlie Sangaline, Higdon, Stockman and Lauren Sangaline.

The scores for the Talemore were as follows:A Flight - Gross - Bob Haithcock 78Net - Dick Ryan 74B Flight - Gross 89Net - John Kozar 75C Flight - Gross - Joe Kogut 97Net - two way tie, Kemp, Gallucio 78D Flight - Gross - Fred Mears 110Net - Gene Mattingly 82 Closest to the pin on the Little River Course: Paul Kemp; on the

Talemore: Jack Sinclair and Bob Haithcock; on Anderson Creek: Bob Haithcock and Charlie Sangaline. Blind bogey winnings on Sunday were shared by Kemp and Gilbertson; on Tuesday by Kaufman and Avis.

Happy Summer to all of you. As I begin my tenure as President of Ladies U-Knighted, I would like to thank all of you for your support of our organization. It’s now been more than five years since our group got together to start an auxiliary to help the Knights of Columbus EDW Council members accomplish their many goals and priorities. Our top priority and goal is to help with the renovation of the Council Home. We are proud to be contributors to the Campaign and our goal is to up our pledge to the next level in the near future.

Many thanks to Nanette O’Neil for her leadership as the past President and thanks in advance to our new Board: V. President: Jo Wood; Secretary: Nanette O’Neill; Treasurer: Nancy Rougeux; Publicity: Meredith Dittmar. I’m looking forward to a successful year!

We were also honored to be a partner with the Knights in promot-ing and leading events centered around EDW’s 85th anniversary. As the host for the golf tournament, we are happy to announce that we had a very successful outing. The weather was beautiful and we ended up with more than 60 golfers. Many, many thanks to our corporate sponsors and hole sponsors whose financial sup-port made it possible to play at one of the top golf courses in the area at a very reasonable rate. And even better yet, we were able to return to the Knight’s more than $500.00 to help offset some of the other costs for the 85th celebration.

Stop by our tent during the 4th of July picnic to pick up some sweet treats and see some of the items we have for sale, includ-ing a new water color print of the Council Home by our very own Meredith Dittmar. We’ll be running a 50/50. Congratulations to our Memorial Day 50/50 winner, the Kirchner family!

On a sad note, our prayers go out to Dave Kreer. His wife Bev, who passed away in June, was a founding member of Ladies U-Knighted and served as the first President.

BeneFiTsSince its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000,

long-term care insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care clients in the United States, a K of C Care policy brings added value.

That added value is in the form of a service called “Provider Pathway,” a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discounted rates. The network covers: home health care, personal emergency response systems, adult day care, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities and durable medical equipment.

Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of Columbus Long-Term Care Insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing requirements.

If you haven’t yet spoken with your professional Knights of Columbus agent about long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do so. There are many decisions to make in choos-ing a plan – benefit amounts and duration, a facility only plan or one that covers home health care, and the length of the “waiting period” before benefits kick in are just a few of the items you’ll need to consider.

Having a professionally trained agent — and a Brother Knight you can trust at that — to help you through the process is yet an-other valuable benefit that comes with your Knights of Columbus membership. Take advantage of it.

Group and Individual Swim LessonsAvailable to Pool Members

Group LessonsSession 1 - June 30th thru July 11thSession 2 - July 14th thru July 25th

Session 3 - July 28th thru August 8th Session 4 - August 11th thru August 22nd

Level 1 - 12:00 to 12:45 M-FLevel 2 - 1:00 to 1:45 M-FLevel 3 - 2:00 to 2:45 M-FLevel 4 - 3:00 to 3:45 M-FLevel 5 - 4:00 to 4:45 M-F

The cost will be $80 per two week session per childTo sign up stop by the main office.

Individual lessons are available at $30 per half hour

Parents are asked to bring their child prepared to swim and at the start of the lesson to please leave the immediate lesson area. This is to minimize the distractions to the children and help them focus on swimming. Parents are also asked to refrain from speaking to the instructor and their child during the lesson. The instructor will be available for a few minutes before and after each lesson to discuss any problem or concerns.

It is encouraged that children attend every lesson. As with all new things, learning to swim is often difficult and scary at the beginning. But with persistence, children can quickly become safe and competent swimmers.

To determine your child’s swimming level, please refer to the description below.

Level IA level one swimmer is a non-swimmer. Through the course of lessons, children will gain the ability and comfort to put their faces in

the water, float independently on their stomachs and begin rudimentary freestyle swimming.

Level IIA level two swimmer is comfortable with the water but has limited swimming ability. Through the course of lessons, children will

progress with freestyle swimming skills, jumping into the pool and safely returning to the deck, back float without assistance, and retriev-ing items from the bottom of the pool.

Level III A level three swimmer is confident being in the water, is able to swim freestyle for moderate distance and has begun to be comfort-

able with the backstroke. Through the course of lessons, children will learn to tread water, will learn rotary breathing during freestyle and will work towards swimming one length each of freestyle and backstroke without stopping.

Level VIA level four swimmer is proficient in freestyle and backstroke and is ready to progress with other swimming skills. In level four, but-

terfly and breaststroke techniques will be introduced as well as freestyle racing starts, and underwater swimming.

Level VA level five swimmer is comfortable swimming all four competitive racing strokes. Students in this level will focus on stroke develop-

ment and technique, as well as racing starts, turns and finishes.
