From the Desk of 1st Vice District Governor Judy Barr

Hello Lions of District 4-L4. I’m writing this article during one of our rainy days that we’ve seem to have more of this year. Although I’ve had to replace my umbrella twice and the wet roads are tougher to navigate, the one thing that has lifted my spirit is how well District 4-L4 has been this year! Our membership has increased and new clubs are on the horizon. But most importantly was hearing from everyone around the state at the MD4 Convention how prominent L4 is in the state. For example, L4 was up for seven different awards that I counted. I wanted to congratulate Wendy Ann Stuard for being a nominee for Lion of the Year—it was great to see your face in Redding, Wendy! Buena Park Noon was a nominee for Medium Club Project of the Year. Pomona Host was a finalist for Large Club Project of the Year and Seal Beach was a finalist for Club of the Year. Winners from 4-L4 include Leo of the Year Madison Berry, Stanton Lions Club Small Club Project of the Year and Lions Scott and Diane Quinlan the MD-4 Kay and Denise Fukushima Couple of the Year! Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard last year. I am so very proud of all of you! Keep up that Lion Spirit for another great year, Lions of 4-L4. You are ALL the BEST! ~With much pride, Lion Judy Barr, 1

CABINET SECRETARY REPORT

Hello District 4-L4. Happy SPRING to everyone. Our Region Meetings are coming up this month. Saddleback is Monday March 13

th, Orange is Monday March 20

th and Foothill is

Monday March 27th

. Hope to see you come out and support our student speakers. Clubs please be sure to RSVP on time and make sure your RSVP includes your student speaker and their families.

April 5th

is the deadline for the nomination letters for Lion of the Year, Leo of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and Couple of the Year. Please be sure to have these in on time. We have a lot of fantastic Lions so I hope to see one nomination from each club. Presidents, for your secretary to qualify for Secretary of the Year we need a letter from you by April 5

th as well so please get that

letter to me.

Secretaries even if you have no changes to your membership you need to go in to the MMR and submit with no changes. If you don’t do this then LCI will show no report for the month. We are getting about 58% of the clubs reporting monthly activity. For those clubs not reporting, these reports are important as the number of hours reported impacts grants LCI receives so every hour reported helps. These grants can be used in many different ways and in 4-L4 we have benefited from these recently with the purchase of the Spot Cameras. With all the rain I am sure many of the clubs in our MD4 will be asking for disaster grants to help. So please make sure to fill out your reports of all the wonderful things your club does. If you have any questions or need help please feel free to contact me.

CABINET TREASURER REPORT

Club Treasurers LCI & MD4 have sent out the Invoice / Dues Statements for the Jan-June 2017 time frame for the amount of members you have listed. When you receive your invoice please pay it as soon as possible. Why pay on time? The main reason is because you do not want your club to be delinquent. Second you want your club to be eligible to vote at convention. Third you do not want to receive a call from me. Please make sure LCI and MD4 have your correct email address. If you have not received your Club Invoices by now contact International / MD4 or myself for any questions. All invoices are sent to email addresses that they have on file. As our year ends all Clubs should be thinking about who will be next year’s officers. If you are considering volunteering to be the Club Treasurer realize you are the person who must keep all the club books in order. You have a responsibility to your club and the members to keep accurate reports for both Administration and Charity Accounts. It is not a difficult job if you make sure you stay on top of it. A knowledge and understanding of Quick Books (or the operating system your club may choose to use) is very helpful for creating reports and invoicing your members for the proper amount of dues.

GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND

Hello District 4-L4 Lions. As we approach our last District Meeting of the year, I need to sell more Guide Dog tickets. We are about ¼ of the way to our goal of $1,000 so we can have a District tile on the wall of the new puppy facility. This facility will be completed in 2018 and I would love to be one of the first Lions Districts with a plaque on the wall. My tickets are $10 and the prize is a one week stay at the beautiful Welk Resort near San Diego. The facility will sleep up to 8 individuals and would make a great vacation spot. It is close to all kinds of fun and adventure. Please pick up a ticket soon. We will be holding the drawing at the District Convention in May so do not hesitate to grab this great bargain. Also, I am still selling BBQ sauce and rubs and I will have them at the District Student Speaker Contest at the District Meeting. Please continue to support Guide Dogs for the Blind!

~Thanks again, Lion Scott Quinlan Guide Dogs for the Blind Fundraising Chairperson [email protected] 714/200-3964

To All District 4-L4 Lions Clubs,

I want to thank all of the clubs in our District that have supported the Foundation during this past year. Your support is necessary for the success of the Foundation. To each club that has utilized the Sight & Hearing Van and vision scanners, I would like to say thank you as well. You have provided a valuable service to your community.

As a Foundation, we will continue to serve. In order to do that, our by-laws require us to elect Directors as needed each year. The election will occur at the District 4-L4 Annual Convention at the Pala Mesa Resort on Saturday, May 20, 2017, in conjunction with the District election.

With three openings to fill to complete the nine-member Board, the elected Directors shall serve a 3-year term. This is the official call for nominations. If there is an interested or deserving Lion in your club, this is a rewarding opportunity to serve. At least 6 District Governors have served on the Foundation’s Board. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2017. Nominations should be submitted to Foundation President Joan Parks, [email protected].

Yours in Lionism, Lion Joan Parks President, Sight and Hearing Foundation

58TH ANNUAL ENSENADA VISITATION! – Lion Carol Linehan-Ensenada Visitation Chair

A total of 24 Lions and friends set sail on March 3rd on the Carnival Inspiration. The contingency was made up of Lions from the following Clubs in the District: Cucamonga District Host, Harbor Mesa, Huntington Beach Host, Ontario-Upland, Seal Beach Host and Upland Host. IPDG Ken and Denise Myers stood in for DG Bob who was there in spirit at all the activities and dinners and PDG Norm MacKenzie and wife Jo were there to join the fun. Upon arrival, we met on the Lido Deck for lunch followed by an informative muster exercise. Then we set sail out of Long Beach Harbor. All through the dinner hour each night and on Saturday we played games which were brain teasers and your luck with the dice. There was the pass me game (where you have to know interesting facts about the different cruisers) and a custom made Lions Bingo Game. We spent Saturday at sea. Sunday in Ensenada we were met by President Rolando Villarino Galvan and members of the Ensenada Lions Club. Lion President Rolando arranged for transportation to take us to the Club de Leones clubhouse. It turned out to be a special meeting which was attended by their Region and Zone Chair. They inducted three new members at the meeting (all women!). We were happy to hear that they had begun to include female members in the club about eight months ago. The main purpose for taking the cruise was to attend and continue the 58

th International Visitation (which really started some seventy-nine years

ago) with our fellow Ensenada Lions. The District, clubs and individuals presented over $1000 in donations along with school supplies to Lion President Rolando. Cucamonga District Host Lion Steve Lacey presented him with one of their club pins. We enjoyed a traditional Mexican lunch and were presented with home-made jellies which they plan to sell along with other souvenirs at their newest project. The city of Ensenada has donated a beautiful building to the Ensenada Lions for their use. The money that is raised will go toward feeding the poor and provide glasses and hearing aids to less fortunate people in Ensenada. We stopped on our way back to the ship to see the new building on the way back to the ship (and enjoy a glass of vino!). The cruisers returned to the ship to enjoy more fun and events. Some lucky Lions enjoyed the Casino. Shopping and the entertainment was non-stop. The weather was great as we leisurely sailed back to Long Beach. Looking forward to the 59th Annual Visitation!

California Lions Foundation an IRC 501(c)(3) Corporation #81-2850129

Fellow 4-L4 Lions,

The California Lions Foundation (CLF) has gotten off to a great start with a number of individual Lions and clubs indicating interest in contributing to CLF as Founding Members and Founding Clubs. To date CLF has raised approximately $45,000 with a goal of $250,000 by the end of 2017 at which time we will have a sufficient corpus from which to start making grants. At the recent MD4 Convention, we presented ten Kay K. Fukushima Fellows, including a special Fellow presentation by PID Larry Dicus to Denise Fukushima, Kay’s widow. The Lions of California also presented convention guest, PIP Joe Preston, with a Fukushima Fellow.

We also held a board meeting and a planning session for the next six months at the MD4 Convention during which we identified specific deliverables from each committee. CLF largely works through its seven committees composed of board members. These committees include: Fundraising and Recognition; Grants; Publicity; Budget, Finance and Investment Management; District Level; Policy, Strategic Planning, Bylaws and Legal; Executive. If you have interest in the District level, please let me know.

CLF now has a website at californialionsfoundation.org. Please take the time to look through it.

If you would like a presentation about CLF to your club or board of directors, please give me a call. In any event, please keep CLF in mind as you develop your charities budget for this upcoming fiscal year. It is an honor to be a Founding Member or Founding Club.

Yours in Lionism, Gil Smith PDG 4-L4 President, California Lions Foundation

FOOTHILL REGION CHAIR ANDY MEGAW

FOOTHILL ZONE A CHAIR TAMARA MARTIN

Happy March and St. Patrick’s Day from the Foothill Zone A Clubs. Our awesome Region Chair, Andy Megaw, continues to get stronger by the day and is cancer free now! Yay! I had surgery on my left ankle at the end of January and now I’m on my third cast. I had to rent a scooter because I was putting too much pressure on my foot. Because of said scooter, however, I was able to make the cruise to Ensenada and that was awesome fun. Meanwhile, here is what the clubs in Foothill Region Zone A have going on.

As mentioned in the last issue, you do NOT want to miss the Cucamonga District Host Lions Club Fashion Show/Vendor Extravaganza on May 6

th. Tickets are only $40 for a fabulous luncheon at the Ontario Doubletree Hotel. Please mark your calendars NOW for May 6

th.

You do NOT want to miss this delicious luncheon, while enjoying lots of fashions-women AND men this year-along with super vendors, all there to raise funds for worthy Lions Clubs projects. We will also be having a fundraising event at Applebee’s later this year, which you will not want to miss. And right now, this very minute, we are selling Jack-in-the-Box coupon booklets for $5 each, containing many free and two-for-one coupons. How many booklets may I save for YOU?!

Finally, Cucamonga District Host Lions sent ten members on the cruise to Ensenada to give the Ensenada Lions money and school supplies. The Ensenada Lions Club inducted three new members and served us a fantastic lunch as well. Way to turn out the number of members, Cucamonga District Host…..WOO HOO!!

Ontario-Upland Lions had a successful Charter Night in February for their new Leo Club. And they had a wonderful visitation with Upland Host Lions in February.

The Upland Host Lions Club had a visitation with the Ontario-Upland Lions in February and they had a wonderful speaker from the Repertory Opera Company in Pomona at their membership meeting. They learned of the history of the group and enjoyed a video of previous performances and a live aria by Puccini. Beginning in April, they will no longer meet at Maniac Mike’s Café at Cable Airport. Their Board Meetings will be the first Monday of the month at the Landecena Community Center on San Bernardino Road in Upland at 6:30 p.m. and their membership meetings will be the third Monday of the month at El Perico Mexican Restaurant on Foothill and Grove in Upland at 6:30p.m. The Club’s new phone number is currently 909.490.1559.

FOOTHILL ZONE B CHAIR MICHAEL SHAW

Four score and eighty years ago, our Lion fathers brought forth to this continent, a new contest. Dedicated to the proposition that all students are created equal and they have a fundamental right to be heard. Now we are engaged in a great student speaker contest, testing whether; “is the right to privacy a threat to our national security?” We met on a great battle-field of competition to provide an opportunity to stimulate a student’s self-expression and independent thinking as well as enable students to hone their public speaking skill while addressing issues important to their community. I have come here today to dedicate my article to thank those who have given so much of their lives that our contest might live. It is all together fitting and proper that I should do this. The world will little note, nor long remember what is said here, but it can never forget what the students did here. That this contest of the students, by the students, for the students shall not perish from the earth…Thank you, Scott Quinlan, Carol Linehan, Shari Megaw, PJ Smith and Dewey Linehan for spearheading this great contest.

ORANGE REGION CHAIR LARRY ROTTWEILER

There are two ways of looking at this image. The negative image shows two dogs fighting over a stick. Both look equal in size and ability, but one must dominate over the other. In the end the dominant one gets stuck with a stick. The positive image shows two dogs working together chasing the same stick and having a great time together with a common goal. In the end a great friendship has developed. Governor Bob has taught us all year that we need to be more like the positive image. Lions working together can get more done. Lions are not a competition, but a way to grow friends, help our communities, and in the end develop better relationships. Let’s see how you and your club can help other clubs with their projects, ideas, and to grow their clubs.

ORANGE ZONE A CHAIR WALT ROUNTREE

Special thanks to the Brea Lions for contributing so much to the needy children at the Crittenton Services for Children and Families. Check out their website (http://crittentonsocal.org/). Brea Lion and PDG P.J. Smith has spearheaded this drive locally where our Brea Lions and the Philharmonic Society of Orange County purchased and donated 157 pairs of pajamas for these needy children. Lion P.J. presented the PJ’s (fittingly named after him) to Bev Berryman, Volunteer Coordinator. “Thank you Brea Lions for all the joy and happiness you give to so many.” The Brea Lions were not able to participate in the Centennial parade because it was rained out. Three students competed at Brea's Student Speaker Contest.

In February, the Fullerton Host Lions Club celebrated Lions Flag Day, delivering American flags to all first graders in Fullerton. Nine members helped deliver the flags to a total of 1,527 students who each had their own flag to take home before President's Day. Two members attended a luncheon to honor the founder of the Orangethorpe Learning Center that we support. Three students participated in our Student Speaker contest this year, with the winner competing in the Zone contest March 6

th. 288 pairs of glasses were collected.

Fullerton Host Lions are now planning their Charity Putting Tournament at Golfer’s Paradise on April 23rd.

The Pomona Host Lions continued cooking and serving meals to the hungry at the Winter Homeless Shelter during February. Recently, they served 154 meals on each of two nights. The club’s literacy projects are in full swing. For “Lions Roar for Reading,” members are inventorying, labeling and sorting over 800 books, and soon the Lions will be going to the first grade classrooms of the nine schools, whose families have a poverty rate of 95% and above. Each first grader gets to select a book of his/her own choice from the many laid out on the tables. The club’s Little Free Libraries project is in full swing with stewards keeping the LFLs well stocked. One more library is ready to be installed. The Pomona Host Lions also hosted a Student Speaker Contest, picked up trash at a park during the city’s quarterly Beautification Day, helped with registration and gave out bags at the International Modern Pentathlon, where several hundred athletes from around the world competed. Most of the Pentathlon events were held at the Fairplex in Pomona. The club also went on a visitation to the Newport Beach Hawaiian Lions, inducted one member and signed up another. Four Pomona Host Lions travelled up to Redding for the MD4 Convention. President WendyAnn Stuard was one of the fifteen district-nominated Lions for MD4 Lion of the Year, and the club’s Little Free Library was named as a top three finalist in the MD4 Project of the Year for large clubs. Also at the convention, PDG Gil Smith was awarded with a California Lions Foundation Founding Member Kay K. Fukushima Fellowship.

FOOTHILL ZONE C CHAIR DAVE STILWELL

The Chino Valley Lions and the Ontario Upland Lions have come together to co-sponsor a new Chino High School Leo Club. The Chino Leo Club was chartered on February 15th with 24 members. The reason for the co-sponsorship is simple. Annette Hatch is a teacher at the Chino High School and is the Leo advisor for the Leo Club. Annette is also the president of the Ontario-Upland Lions Club. So both clubs decided to co-sponsor the new Chino High School Leo Club. The Diamond Bar Breakfast Lions are very happy to welcome new members Lions Zina and Kim Stagg, thus making three new members this year with Iyun Yi-all sponsored by Lion Cindee Quan. Thank you Lion Cindee for your hard work. Yea! We will be chartering our new Diamond Bar Community Leo Club soon with 23 members. This will be our fourth Leo Club. Yea again! On a very sad note we lost Lion Cecilia after many years battling cancer. Also, our condolences to Lions Brian and Cindee for the loss of their five month old granddaughter. This year our "Drumming for Kids" concert recognized Lions Jack and Wanda Tanaka for their years of service with the Lions and the youth. They are Leo Advisors for the Chaparral Middle Leos for the past eighteen years and seventeen years with the Diamond Bar High School Leos. Congratulations! Our performers for "Drumming for Kids" were; Diamond Bar High School Drum Line, Korean Performing Arts Academy, drum soloist Tom Rossi (African, Cuban), Youth and Family Club of Pomona Valley (Aztec) and Claremont Taiko (Japanese). They did a wonderful job. We raised approximately $5,000. We held our Student Speaker Contest on Feb 20, at the South Coast Air Quality Management District Offices, in Diamond Bar. The winner was Thomas Au from Diamond Bar High School. We did two visitations this month, one to Brea Lions Club and the other to La Habra Lions. Our Chaparral Middle School Leos continue to collect "Pennies for Patients", Diamond Bar High School Leos continue to recycle for the special needs students at Diamond Bar High School, volunteer at the library and worked the "Drumming for Kids" concert. Diamond Bar High School Leos, Lorbeer Middle School Leos and Diamond Bar Community Leos continue to work on their Centennial projects. Walnut Lions held their annual Student Speaker Contest on Thursday, Feb 16 at Walnut City Hall, Council Chambers. Students from Walnut High School participated and the ultimate winner was Junior Natalie Jiang who also won the Zone C Contest

La Habra Host Lions held a Valentine’s Day Social on Valentine’s Day at the regular club meeting. Membership Chair Kathy Felix set up a social hour and all members were encouraged to bring a guest. The event was well attended by some prospective new members. Kathy created games and everyone had a good time. Lion Jeanette Jones collaborated with a local Girl Scout leader to collect 300 pair of glasses. She also collected 200 pair making 500 total pairs of eyeglasses collected. Orange County Korean American Lions had five students participate in their Student Speaker Contest, one of whom drove two hours from Camarillo to Buena Park to participate. . All were excellent, but only one winner can advance.

ORANGE ZONE B CHAIR MIKE SMITH

We held our club level Student Speakers Contest at three clubs: the Buena Park Host Lions, Anaheim Lions, and the new OC Hana Lions. The three winners met at the Zone contest on Monday evening and presented their best speeches to a large group. Speaker number one was the lucky winner who will move onto the Region contest on March 20

th. The

Buena Park Lions dispursed a large amount of their charity funds to many local programs in their area. Much of these funds come from their signature event “Silverado Days”. They also participated and raised funds in the Relay for life for the American Cancer Society. Great job Lions!

The Orange Lions had three members, including Governor Bob Susaeta, educate 3rd

and 4th

graders at St. Paul’s Lutheran School on what the American Flag stands for. They used Lions Flag Day as the format to thrill 94 students with knowledge and a real flag for them to cherish. The club’s wood worker, Don Wolf, even made small stands for the flags so the youngsters could display their flags. They also received a generous collection of 398 used eye glasses donated by Patriots and Paws. Patriots and Paws support our veterans and is a regular program that the Orange Lions Club supports. I would like to praise the newest club in the District, the Orange County Hana Lions, for successfully carrying out a Student Speaker Contest in the first year as a club. President Brian Kim and their contest chairman, Jimmy Jo, had five students make speeches at their contest. Great job Lions.

ORANGE ZONE C CHAIR MARCELLA MCSORLEY

The Garden Grove Host Lions Club held its Student Speaker Contest at its Clubhouse. Five students from four different high schools in the Garden Grove Unified School District spoke on the topic, "Is the Right to Privacy a Threat to our National Security?" The contest winner is Kira Bustillos of Los Amigos High School, shown receiving her winner's certificate from Club President Lollie Beauchamp. Kira will advance to the Zone C contest on March 9. All five participants shown in the attached photo are (l to r) Brian Hinajosa, Susan Hernandez, Kira Bustillos, MaryAnn Lee, and Giselle Rios.

A Celebration of Life was held for Seal Beach Lion Marcia Haley. God called a special angel home. On February 11th family, friends, Lions and Leos paid their respects to Lion Marcia Haley. Over 200 people attended the memorial service and celebration of life. Lion Marcia was an active Lion. She was a Leo Advisor, Board member for many meetings on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of years, and great supporter of our sight screenings. Alongside husband Lion Mike, she attended and worked every major Lion’s event. For her service she was a two diamond Melvin Jones recipient. Lion Marcia’s deep, abiding passion for youth inspired the formation of the Marcia Dee Haley Youth Scholarship Fund. Over $8000 has already been raised which will memorialize her work for years to come. But nothing was as important to Marcia as being a wife and mother. She did both jobs magnificently. We all stand with husband Lion Mike and son Lion Taylor to keep them strong through this difficult time.

It was a bit cold and damp and the fields weren’t quite ready due to the rains that had moved through the area earlier in the week but the Seal Beach Pony Baseball Opening Day went on with only a slight delay from 9AM to 10:30AM causing some of the early games to be cancelled. Team pictures were taken followed by the teams and families paying tribute to the USA by saying the pledge of allegiance followed by a recording of the Star Spangled Banner. SB Pony Baseball President Craig then announced the teams and the managers one by one. The little ones (players) seemed pretty excited as their team names were read and they ran down the make shift aisle giving “High Fives” as they ran past the previously announced teams. Who wouldn’t have been excited…. making your first appearance of the year in your clean uniform and a big smile? The Lions and Leo’s set up and were ready to go by 10:00a.m. The league provided all hotdogs, hamburgers, buns, soda, ice, chips and condiments. The Leos helped set up and then sliced the tomatoes and grilled some onions. The event ran from 10:30 until 2:00p.m. At the end of the day bellies were full, smiles were in abundance and the games that had been scheduled to be played earlier in the day were under way. Craig and his staff were very appreciative of all that the Seal Beach Lions and Leos had done for the event and look forward to us being there next year. We had 9 Lions and 15 Leos who served 215 complete meals and about 20 that were hot dog or hamburger only. It is estimated that the SB Pony League with apparel sales, food and beverages, raised between $1,300.00 and $1,800.00.

SADDLEBACK REGION CHAIR CHRIS BARR

Hello from Super Saddleback Region! MD4 held their statewide convention in February. It was an excellent opportunity for all Lions to enjoy visiting each other while exploring the many facets of Lionism. Great meetings, food, exhibits and awards. We all should be very proud of Tustin Host Lions President Diane Quinlan and husband, Huntington Beach Host Lions President Scott Quinlan as they were awarded MD4 Couple of the Year. Congratulations Scott and Diane! A well-deserved award! Our Region keeps growing, having fun with our club members and serving our communities! We are Lions—We Serve!

ZONE A CHAIR MARK PIVA

Shh…Zone A Clubs were planning this past month for upcoming events. Which is great! So not a lot of activity to report. The Saddleback Zone A Student Speaker Contest was March 1

st. Two winners from club-level contests

competed and the winner from Harbor Mesa will move on to compete at the Region Contest. Now onto the clubs… The Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions are planning (see I said they were planning) their Annual Fish Fry. The Fish Fry will be held at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa on Friday June 2, Saturday June 3 and Sunday June 4th.

The Fish Fry will kick off Friday evening about 5 pm with fish dinners, other food, a beer and wine garden, a car show, comedy with Lion Bob Ooten and others, a carnival and a great selection of bands. Saturday and Sunday continue with more of the same and much, much more. More information will be posted on the website as the event is planned. The three-day event raises about $25,000 annually, money to support local charities, Lions club charities, school booster groups and other nonprofits. Lions clubs can purchase a booth for $400.00. The Laguna Beach Riviera Club is looking for Lions interested in representing Lions in the annual Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade in March. For more information, contact Lion Justin Myers, [email protected]. Costa Mesa Orange Coast Lions President Walden notes a special free event being held on March 11th at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital where a presentation of the radio version of “It’s a Wonderful Life” will celebrate 70 years. Please see flyer in this month’s Forum. Harbor Mesa Lions concentrated on service and fun this month. The club began the month with its Student Speaker Contest. Next, they delivered cookies to the Costa Mesa Police Station on Valentine’s Day with a note that we appreciate having them in our community. On the 25th they attended a play, "The Importance of Ernest," at the Lyceum Theatre at Vanguard University and had dinner afterwards. They always have a lot of fun at these events. Huntington Beach Host Lions have been busy getting ready for their annual Crabfest-2017 on March 26

th at Old World Festival Hall in Huntington Beach from 4-7 pm. The 19

th Annual Crabfest fundraiser is the club’s major event of the

year. Reports are that tickets have been selling like crab cakes. Tickets are $65 per person and can be purchased online at https://crabfest2017.eventbrite.com. The club held its Student Speaker Contest and is inducting three new members at the first meeting in March.

ZONE B

The Chinese American Lions celebrated Chinese New Year together with the Asian American Senior Citizen Service Center on Friday, February 10

th. It was so nice to have seven members from Pomona Host Lions and three from Fullerton Host Lions join us. That was a

wonderful night with so much Chinese traditional dancing and singing. Our March monthly meeting was held on March 21st

in Lotus Chinese Eatery in Huntington Beach. In addition to enjoying good food, members shared their experience and also welcomed a new member Xiaogugan who is a new immigrant from China. The interesting thing is he visited Harbor Mesa Lions and Tustin Host Lions before by himself and finally found Chinese American Lions to be a good fit.

Seal Beach Lions serve lunches and dinners once a month at the Ronald McDonald House at both Children's Hospital of Orange County and Children's Hospital of Long Beach. Lion Chef Linda Palutske served up a feast of pulled pork and chicken sandwiches with baked beans, mac-n-cheese, cole slaw and some heart shaped brownies to a delighted group of people at the OC Ronald McDonald House. Helping her were Judy Danki, Nickki’s mom Karthy , Mary, Dino, Lindsay, Dora, Mark and Nikki.

ZONE C CHAIR JOHN ULRICH

The Laguna Niguel Lions finished up the month of February with great expectations for 2017. Membership continues to be a focus for the club this as we reach out to perspective new members. We have added four new members in February. We continue to always keep in mind 1

st Vice District Governor Judy Barr’s motto, “Just Ask”. The simple reach out always opens the door for the new member.

It works

Once again, Micky Scholte, the club senior member, continues to perform his exceptional efforts collecting used eye glasses throughout the Laguna Niguel community. During January, Micky has collected 344 used eyeglasses in spite of some health issues during the month. Always fully motivated to the collection efforts, Micky has collected 4,817 and 2,051 used cases with a revised upward target of 8,000 for the year. Micky continues to maintain his high level of effort almost single handedly within our area by maintaining relationships, encouraging club members to find used glasses and his lifelong Lion dedication.

The club continues our book collection effort partnering with the Laguna Niguel Libraries, Laguna Niguel Senior Center, individual donors and Pomona Host Lions to donate children’s books to the Little Free Libraries. We enjoy assisting and partnering with Pomona Host in the effort to promote children literacy. The club has developed a partnership with the Laguna Niguel Botanical Preserve to assist where possible during the year with community events and maintenance efforts.

Several club members have joined the non-profit Niguel Botanical Preserve and will assist them in the efforts during the year. The Botanical Preserve held their initial fund raiser on January 29

th at the Laguna Niguel Senior Center. Through the Lions club, city network

and active involvement to bring in sponsors and participants, the event exceeded expectations. The club donated a Poppy Sponsorship to the event thanks to donations from the club and club members. Final results were close to $9,000 that will fund improvements within the Preserve. Also, the club is actively assisting during the city’s Earth day on April 22nd. Over 200 city volunteers are expected to be involved in planting and maintenance during the event with the Lions playing a major role.

The Partnership of Kids for Vision, Illumination and Laguna Lions will have a full agenda of vision clinics throughout the community at several elementary schools and homeless shelters during the 2017 year. Laguna Niguel Lions will assist during the coming year as the events are scheduled with our partners. Also, an event was scheduled at the Lighthouse Church located in Costa Mesa to dispense prescription glasses that are a result of our most recent event. Unfortunately well over 800 glasses were lost in shipment. We spent one Saturday at the Lighthouse Church making up for the loss. So many grateful deserving folks always make the day a rewarding one for the partnership. More events to come

Aliso Niguel High School Leos continue to serve the community. We are planning a combined picnic with the Leos during April to promote fun and partnership with both Lions and Leos It is looking like a nice 2017 coming up as we hope to develop our partnership with the Leos during the upcoming year.

The club continues to collect items of all types for the resale store of Laura’s house. Laura’s House accepts gently worn items, books, shoes and much more. The organization’s mission is focused on supporting victims of domestic violence. We will continue to support Laura’s house for months to come by donating items that can be used for resale.

The club level Student Speaker contest was a success at the El Niguel Golf Club. We are looking forward to the next level Zone event on March 8

th at the Laguna Niguel Community Room at 6:30. We always enjoy the event as several students participate from local high

schools. The students research the topic and present so well that routinely make the final selection difficult for the judges.

We had a successful combined social time and fund raiser at the local Tony Pepperoni restaurant. It is always fun to get Lions, family and friends together. We have plans to continue events like this throughout the year.

Aloha from the Newport Beach Hawaiian Lions Club! On March 25-26th our club will be participating in the 17th Annual Beach Cruise in Huntington Beach on Main Street. We will be using the District 4-L4 Lions Sight & Hearing Van for a complimentary vision screening as well as selling first aid kits to the crowds of car enthusiast. We welcome everyone to come out, stop by our booth and show your support to our club and enjoy the car show!

Our Ohana Luau fundraiser scheduled for April 8th has been postponed to October. This will be in partnership with the Newport Aquatic Center in Newport Beach to benefit the blind paddlers in our community and the Orange County Makapo Aquatics Project which is “Helping Blind and Visually Impaired Athletes See Their Potential.” Makapo Aquatics is dedicated to providing the blind community a unique and unmatched opportunity to improve their quality of life through paddling sports. The Newport Beach Hawaiian Lions Club is excited to join hands with the Newport Aquatics Center and will continue to support the efforts of helping those that are visually impaired in our community.

Claire Norman’s Dutch Adventure in the YEP!

My name is Claire Norman and I was lucky enough to participate in the Lions Club Youth Exchange Program during the summer of 2016. With the help of my local Lions Club, I was able to embark on the adventure of a lifetime and spend one month in the Netherlands. As an avid bookworm and history buff, I am so grateful that I was able to explore a country with such a rich history and culture. From the cobblestone streets of Amsterdam, to the modern skyline of Rotterdam, as well as the many hidden treasures of the Netherlands, like Gouda and Volendam, I was fortunate enough to experience a country I have always dreamed of going to. As a result, I made some incredible memories along the way.

While in the Netherlands, I stayed with two host families, as well as participated in a camp with other exchange students. Both of my host families were incredibly generous and made sure that I got to experience Dutch culture in countless ways. Whether out sailing or sightseeing in great, historic cities, I enjoyed the Dutch way of life in all of its many forms. I cannot thank them enough for taking care of me when I was in the Netherlands; it made my trip more memorable to be cared for by such lovely people. Additionally, I was fortunate to participate in a youth camp with over twenty other exchange students. I loved learning about Dutch culture with individuals from India, Poland, Turkey, and countless other nations, as well as learning about their own respective cultures. I would have stayed at the camp all summer if I had the chance, and am already looking forward to reuniting with my friends in the future.

Through the relationships I forged with my friends at camp, which I know I will have for the rest of my life, I gained a new global perspective. Further, by journeying so far out of my comfort zone, I gained an incredible newfound sense of self. Navigating in a foreign country, without the known comforts of home and family, by myself transformed me into an even more independent and resourceful individual. In turn, it made me cherish each moment of my trip even more. I am so happy and grateful because I know the skills I learned while on my trip will help me for the rest of my life.

I am so grateful that I was able to participate in such an amazing program because I not only made life-long memories and relationships, but I became a new and better global citizen as a result. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
