4-H Club Leaders Meeting A meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 29, 2019, 6:30 pm at University of Maryland Extension Garrett County office. Organizational leaders from each club are encouraged to attend the meeting. The purpose of the meeting will be to share State 4-H updates, plan for the new 4-H 2.0 Online enrollment system, review the steps to close out the 2019 year, and plan the 2020 year. All clubs are asked to send a representative. Please call the office to register your attendance.

National 4-H Conference At National 4-H Conference, teen delegates take the lead by serving on consulting groups to make recommendations for future directions for 4-H. Teens serve on one of the operations committees to help conduct the events and functions of the Conference. Activities include a visit to Capitol Hill and a meeting with your Senator or Representative. This trip takes place April 6-11, 2019 at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase. Application is available at: http://extension.umd.edu/4-h/youth-families/awards-recognition. Upload the application to the Out of State Trips Portal by October 15, 2019.

4-H International Exchange Program Opportunity States’ 4-H Summer Outbound programs provide American 4-H youth with the opportunity to travel to foreign countries for a cultural immersion experience. Delegates live with volunteer host families and engage in experiential learning about a new way of life. Delegates experience aspects of daily life that allow them to more deeply understand both their host culture and their own culture. Our network of like-minded international partners recruit host families and plan enrichment activities for the delegation. Country opportunities for 2020 are Japan, Costa Rica, Finland and South Korea. 4-H youth ages 12-18 are eligible for this program. For additional information, contact Brenda Rodriguez at [email protected] or to apply visit the Maryland 4-H website at http://extension.umd.edu/4-h.

Helping with set up at the fairgrounds for the spring show (May, 2020)

Beef Fall Weigh-In Members planning to sell a steer at the 2020 Garrett County Fair must bring their steer to the fall weigh-in event. Reminder: We will only be having one weigh-in day.

Date: Saturday, November 2nd from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm.

Location: Garrett County Fairgrounds

In case of bad weather, cancellation announcements will be made on radio stations, WFRB and WKHJ. If the weigh-in needs to be rescheduled, the make-up date will be Saturday, November 9th.

At the weigh in: your animal will be weighed and tagged.

The Livestock Association will provide triangle nine immunizations, if needed. The Garrett County Livestock Association representatives who will be conducting the weigh-in understand that you have not had a lot of time to work with your animal. To have the weighing and tagging go as smoothly as possible please abide by the following guidelines:

There will be Livestock Association helpers at the scales who will help assist with your animal but your animal should be wearing a halter (this does not mean it is expected to be halter broken, the halter will be used for restraining purposes). Please try to work with your animal enough that it is comfortable with you and controllable. Fall Weigh-In is a mandatory event for all youth with the market steer project. Please share this information with anyone who may be planning to have a steer for the first time in 2020.

Livestock Registration Forms will be mailed out to all members that had a 2019 steer. Additional forms can be obtained from the 4-H Office.

Any questions can be directed to the Livestock Association (301) 746-7141 or the UME Garrett Office (301) 334-6960.

County Bred Animals

The county bred card must be completed including the signature of the breeder. Please have the card completed when you arrive for weigh-in and tagging. Market Animals that are bred by a full-time County resident and born in Garrett County are eligible for competition in the County Bred program.

Animals purchased at the stockyard may be eligible for the county bred program if they were bred and born in Garrett County. The stockyard staff can provide you with the name and contact information to help you determine eligibility. Animals purchased from a producer outside of the county by a Garrett County resident and resold to a Garrett County 4-H or FFA member are not eligible for county bred program because they were not born in Garrett County.

Animals not declared as county bred at the time of tagging will not be eligible for the county bred program at the 2020 Garrett County Fair.

**** RFID Tag Requirement for 2020 Market Steers**** All swine and cattle including steers must have a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag. Steers should be tagged by the producer. If the steer that you purchased does not have an RFID tag, you may obtain one through a veterinarian. All steers will need an RFID tag prior to the November 2nd weigh-in. RFID tags will not be supplied at weigh-in.

Producers needing RFID tags will need their premise identification number and can call (410-841-5810) and purchase through a USDA approved manufacturer. Detailed information can be found at https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/SA_Traceability

Record Setting Year at Livestock Sale Forty-two new buyers this year helped out our 193 exhibitors that garnered $417,174.55 at the livestock sale. A total of 297 animals were sold which included 41 sheep, 111 swine, 82 steers, 59 goats, two pens of three rabbits and two pens of two chickens. We thank all of the buyers and their continued support to our 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale.

Check out our 4-H display at the George K.Littiman Building in downtown Oakland. We have displayed many of the award winning entries in our 4-H building from the GC Agriculture Fair.
