The Brown County Fair Queen Contest is open to girls between the ages of 16 and 20. The queen will be chosen at the fair Sunday, July 29 at 8 p.m. in the Pavilion on the fairgrounds. For more information about the com-petition, contact Debbie Larsh at or (812) 720-1151 or [email protected]. Forms can be picked up and dropped off at the Brown County Purdue Extension Office at the fairgrounds. Each contestant must be at least 16 and cannot have had her 21st birthday as of Aug. 19, the first day of the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant. Contestants must be residents of Brown County. Each contestant must be an active member of at least one organization in her community, such as church group, 4-H, Scouts, etc. It is the responsibility of each contestant to obtain her own sponsor. Sponsor fees are $50 and will be used to defray the expenses of the pageant. The 2012 Brown County Fair queen, first and second runners-up and other contestants are expected to be present and assist throughout the fair. No professional model is eligible. (A professional model is one who earns her livelihood by modeling.) A contestant who has had training or schooling in the modeling field, has been paid on occasion for modeling, or works for a fashion board is not considered a professional model. Any contestant who has competed in a state fair queen pageant cannot compete again.
The winner of the 2012 Brown County Fair Queen Pageant will represent Brown County in the state fair queen pageant, if she meets the state fair queen pageant eligibility requirements. (Contestants for the state fair queen contest must be unmarried and must never have been married, they may not have children or knowingly be pregnant at the time of the state fair pageant). If the winner does not meet eligibility requirements, then the first runner-up will represent Brown County at the state fair pageant. If the first runner-up does not meet state fair pageant eligibility requirements, than the second runner-up will represent Brown County at the state fair pageant. If the second runner-up does not meet state fair pageant eligibility requirements, then Brown County will not have a representative at the state fair pageant. Under no circumstances will it be allowed for the contestant to consume or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs at any queen activity or during the fair. In addition, the use of tobacco products, regardless of age, is not permitted at any queen activity or during the fair. Contestants will conduct themselves in a courteous, respectful manner, exhibit good sportsmanship, and demonstrate reasonable conflict management skills. If any of the rules and responsibilities listed above are not followed by the contestant, the fair queen chairperson and the Fair Board Executive Committee have the right to disqualify the contestant from the pageant.
Judging: Contestants will be judged on the basis of poise, personality and the ability to converse. The judging is divided into three divisions:Interview: Attire is a dress or suit. Each contestant will have three minutes alone before the judges. She will answer impromptu questions asked by the judges.Evening gown: Attire is a long evening gown. At least one portion of the evening gown’s hemline needs to be floor length. A gown with the skirt split above the knee, a low-cut bodice and/or cut design is inappropriate for the pageant and may be discounted by the judges. Professional wear: Attire is a suit or dress. Pant suits or pant separates will not be allowed. The suit does not have to be the same fabric; separates are allowed.
Points and score sheets are for the judges’ assessment only. Final selection is the judges’ decision.
