Shroud - The ideal solution for rainwater harvesting. An “easy-fix” for horizontal installations of submersible pumps. Surface Filtration Pleated filters are widely used for effective surface filtration due to excellent flow rates and high efficiency. Can be used to remove bacteria, cryptosporidium, viruses, cysts, fine particulates and silt.

Depth Filtration Depth filters are available as spun-bonded, resin-bonded or wound cartridges. Can be used to remove a broad particle range, dirt, grit, organic solids, rust particles and sand.

55W UV Unit

UV does not create toxic substances or alter the taste or chemical properties of the water. It is a safe and reliable method of sterilisation. However, once water has passed through the UV system it should not be stored. Carter Pumps stock a range of replacement parts including UV lamps, quartz tubes and o-rings.

If your household water is from a ‘private’ water supply you need to be confident of its safety with regard to bacteriological contamination. UV light is effective against bacteria, viruses, mould spores, algae and other micro organisms. A typical UV system will comprise • Stainless steel chamber • UV lamp • Quartz sleeve to separate water from the UV lamp. • Electrical box When selecting an ultraviolet system care must be taken to choose a model that is powerful enough to treat the flow required. If the flow is faster than specified the water passes through the chamber too fast for the UV light to effectively kill all the bacteria. Where levels of sediment are high or water is cloudy a pre-filter should be fitted as shadowing from the particles could stop the UV light reaching the organisms.

Carter Pumps supply and install sodium hypochlorite dosing sets. Sodium hypochlorite dosing is a very effective method of disinfecting a private water supply against bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi. By adding sodium hypochlorite to water, hypochlorous acid is formed. Hypochlorous acid is part hydrochloric acid and part oxygen. The oxygen atom is a strong oxidator. Sodium hypochlorite is effective against bacteria, viruses and fungi, it disinfects the same way as chlorine.

The volume of sodium hypochlorite solution injected is measured very accurately by the digital dosing pump which doses based on a signal received from a pulse flow meter. Thus the correct chemical dose is administered even as flow varies.

Carter Pumps can provide a maintenance contract to ensure safe and effective operation of your dosing set. During the scheduled visit, amongst other key checks, we monitor the free chlorine levels to ensure disinfection is taking place.

Water Treatment


Private water supplies, be they borehole, well, spring, surface water or river sourced will often require treatment in order to ensure potable water standards.

Nitrate Reduction Systems Removal of nitrate dissolved in water by either a backwash regeneration system or by use of a disposable cartridge. The size of the system will be determined by the level of nitrate present and the peak flow rate. Regenerative systems are available simplex or duplex. A simplex system will regenerate during a period of no demand on a timed basis (ideal for fixed flow applications) or on a metered basis (ideal for variable flow applications). A duplex system is used for applications that require continuous high flows as it will always have one tank in service whilst the other regenerates.

Iron and Manganese Removal Systems Iron and manganese can be removed or at least reduced to acceptable levels. There will be a number of stages in the process and each system is designed specifically to suit the water chemistry.

Point of Use Systems A point of use system that delivers water to a single tap via a reverse osmosis cartridge may be a viable alternative in some instances

The 3-stage cleaning process

With good planning and the right components a rainwater system can be nearly maintenance free and the rainwater quality is ideal for many uses, in both the home and the workplace. A professional system will have three stages of cleaning for the rainwater. Roof areas

Only rainwater from roof areas should go into the storage tank. Smooth surfaced materials are the best (slate, tiles, glazed, cement roofing slab). The rain yield from green roofs is 30-50% and whilst it can sometimes be a bit discoloured it is still suitable for toilet flushing and garden watering. Cleaning step A – Filter

The first cleaning step in the rainwater system is the filter. The Rainwater flows from the roof to the filter. Here, dirt particles and debris are separated from the water. The cleaned water flows to the tank. The dirt is washed to waste or soak away with a small amount of rainwater. All rainwater filters have colters, which are easy to remove and easy to clean.

Cleaning step B - Calmed inlet

Here the second cleaning step takes place. In the water column, any residual particles settle to the bottom of the tank. The rainwater calmed inlet ensures that oxygenated water is introduced to the lower layers of the stored water in the tank. This oxygen rich water prevents anaerobic reducing conditions forming in the storage tank and ensures that the water stays fresh. It also allows water to enter the tank without disturbing the water that is already there. Cleaning step C - Overflow siphon

Any particles that are lighter than water (e.g. flower pollen) float slowly to the water surface. The overflow siphon, with a skimmer effect, removes this floating layer. The overflow from the storage tank is important to get the optimum water quality. It prevents souring of the water. The floating layer could otherwise build up over time, and so reduce oxygen diffusion at the water surface, which in turn could lead to anaerobic reducing conditions in the tank.

Garden Filter 70

A filter collector for a 450m2 roof ideal for tanks between 5500 and 20,000 litres. This filter is suitable for garden, yard and indoor non-potable uses such as W.C. flushing and washing machines. The filter is virtually maintenance free as debris is piped straight back to the drains.

A twin filter for an 800m2 roof ideal for tanks between 9500 and 20,000 litres . This filter is suitable for garden, yard and indoor non-potable uses such as W.C. flushing and washing machines. The filter is virtually maintenance free as debris is piped straight back to the drains.
