BACKGROUND The vision of establishing the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) as envisaged by it’s founding father, Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dato Ahmad Bin Ibrahim is to focus on the harmonisation of Civil Law and Shari‘ah. AIKOL’s vision is unique to the International Islamic University Malaysia that stresses special focus on Integration, Islamization, Internalization and comprehensive excellence (IIICE) in all its activities especially in the teaching and research programs. AIKOL is entrusted with the mission of producing a pool of specialists competent in both Civil Law and Shari‘ah who are able to provide authoritative consultation to individuals, organisations, corporations, government departments, professional bodies, NGOs and any other interested parties, in order for it to become a leading model in Civil Law with a substantial integration of Shari‘ah principles. Towards achieving this, AIKOL has established the Harmonisation of Civil Law and Shari‘ah Unit, a research group comprising of academics specialising in various legal disciplines to conduct research in the area of harmonisation. AIKOL ensures all incorporation of aspects of harmonisation into the curriculum, research and publications. Organisation of the Conference on Harmonisation of Civil Law and Shari’ah is considered as an important avenue that enables academics, practitioners and researchers in the field of harmonisation to gather, explore, exchange ideas and produce practical solutions in areas where harmonisation is targeted. AIKOL has successfully organised three biennial international conferences on Harmonization of Civil Law and Shari’ah. The Inaugral Conference was in 2003, the Second Conference in 2005 and the Third Conference in 2007. All conferences were jointly organised with the Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia. In line with the tradition, this year AIKOL has planned for the Fourth Conference on Harmonisation of Civil Law and Shari’ah 2009. The Fourth Conference is jointly organized by AIKOL and Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia in collaboration with three other prominent institutions, the Department of Syariah Judiciary of Malaysia (Jabatan Kehakiman Syariah Malaysia), Harun M. Hashim Law Centre and the University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan.

This conference is expected to garner the interest of practitioners and academics and researchers where research findings can be presented, experiences shared, learn from reputed scholars and most of all networking between people specializing in the area of Harmonisation.

OBJECTIVES OF THE 4th Conference on Harmonisation of Civil Law and Shari’ah

To identify and explore areas of harmonisation between the civil law and Shari'ah. to examine the possibility and extent of harmonisation. To share experiences of some Muslims countries in implementing the Civil Law vis-a-vis Shari'ah. To expose the participants on areas of harmonisation between two legal systems. To suggest an acceptable module of harmonisation.
