It’s the largest Evel Knievel collection ever assembled—a collection more complete than the daredevil himself amassed in one place and it’s never been shown in its entirety until now!

Get a first hand look at the most comprehensive and authentic collection of Evel Knievel memora-bilia in the world, on display at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads during the Sturgis 75th, from July 31 to August 9. This isn’t a bunch of plastic toys and lunch boxes, folks; these are museum qual-ity, genuine articles that belonged to an American idol who inspired people across the globe to take risks. Evel Knievel’s bigger than life persona still resonates strongly in the public memory, dredging up nostalgia for a time when rule breakers were an anomaly.

The exhibit includes many sets of Knievel’s per-formance leathers including the exact set he wore on the cover of Sports Illustrated before the Snake River Canyon Jump. There are Evel’s actual X-rays showing his broken bones, color-coded to a full-scale human skeleton. You’ll see his personal and performance helmets, many painted by longtime Evel Knievel artist George Sedlak.

And, of course, the exhibit includes several of Knievel’s jump bikes: the American Eagle, Triumph and two XR750s with their original George Sedlack painted sheetmetal, restored to

period condition. One of these motorcycles, Evel’s XR750, will be used by Doug Danger on Thurs-day, August 6, here at the Sturgis Rally in a record-attempt jump over 22 cars, a feat Evel tried but failed. It happens in the Buffalo Chip amphithe-ater beginning at 4:30 PM, two days from now. It’s a must see event.

“Evel was generous—he gave things away all the time! That’s why it was such a challenge to find his belongings,” said Lathan McKay, owner of the collection. “It’s gratifying that after years of Evel’s possessions being lost in obscurity and so many things sold, stolen or missing, the collection is back together.” He terms the hunt and discov-ery process, “Evel Archaeology,” and spent years of effort, plenty of money and eclectic resources to

obtain many of the items.

McKay scoured the globe to track Knievel’s personal effects. Evel Knievel is indeed an emblem of Americana recognized worldwide. So said Mike Patterson, owner of Historic Harley-Davidson in Topeka, KS, at the Big Red press conference. Patterson also announced plans to create a permanent home for the EK Collection adjacent to his dealership. “We are honored and humbled that the Knievel fam-ily has put their trust in us to tell Evel Knievel’s story,” he said.

So come to the Crossroads to see this collection of memorabilia that was once owned and used by the ultimate daredevil, a man whose fearlessness is still imprinted on the imagination of an entire gen-eration. And see Big Red on its inaugural and likely

only trip to the Sturgis Rally, ever. Once the artifacts are installed in the museum, a collection of this size and magnitude will likely never travel again. Take this chance to see the Snake River SkyCycle, Evel’s jewel-encrusted canes, and other authentic artifacts that belonged to Evel Knievel, the world’s preem-inent risk-taker and the most notorious daredevil of the 20th Century. Everyone has an Evel Knievel story! What’s yours?

Tickets are $10 and can be obtained onsite, at ral-lytickets.com or www.buffalochip.com/EVENTS.

The Rally can be overwhelming, so it’s nice to enjoy a gathering with close friends. That’s why the Biker Belles is the event I absolutely would not miss. Every year is a family reunion of riders who come together to celebrate women and their contribution to motorcycling, at the Lodge at Deadwood. Through sharing our stories, we also inspire one another.

Comedian and performance artist Chris Trew brings his Air Sex show to the Buffalo Chip! We talked with him to learn how this zany competi-tion came to be and how you can join the rau-cous fun.

SRD: I read that Air Sex began as a parody of air guitar. What do you have against air guitar?

Chris Trew: I don’t have anything directly against air guitar but it can be repetitive. We just thought it would be funny to do a sex version of it. It was meant to be a one off thing – and that was 8 years ago! It went a lot better than we thought it would, so we kept doing it.

SRD: Why does it connect with people?CT: For one thing, sex is more interesting than

most things to most people. But the show hits on all points. It’s a comedy show, it a big spectacle, it has a huge WTF factor, and there’s a sports ele-ment to it.

There’s also room for variety. With air sex, you have the beginning of the sex, the middle, the end, the who, what, where, how, why. There are so many ways to make an air sex routine inter-esting.

SRD: Have you done Air Sex shows at other biker events?

CT: No. This is very different for us. I know that I haven’t seen anything like Sturgis before but I’m more excited than nervous.

SRD: Who’s better at air sex, men or women?CT: I think it’s actually more even than people

think. In my experience, as the only one who’s seen every single air sex show, women have a little bit of an advantage because it takes women lon-ger to get up on stage. So when they do, they usu-ally get a nice reaction from the crowd. But men are more willing to make themselves look silly or weird for the sake of competition. Women try to win by being sexy but that’s not the most impor-tant thing. The important thing is to put on a believable, fun routine, and that requires more than acting sexy.

(Competitor Alert! If you plan to participate, Chris just told you how to win!)

SRD: What should people expect at the Air Sex World Championships?

CT: People are going to be surprised. It’s not a weird sex show, it’s a polished comedy show with professional comedians, producing a well-run,

weird event. I’m proud of the way we produce and run the show.

SRD: I hear you’re a wrestling promoter as well as a stand up comic. How is air sex like wrestling?

CT: Those worlds are definitely merged together in Air Sex. Like wrestling, you have the pomp and circumstance, and no competitor comes on stage with any less than rock star sta-tus. It’s packaged so the winner feels like it’s a huge deal.

SRD: You were quoted as saying you got screwed on America’s Got Talent. Are you still fighting with Howard Stern?

CT: Not any more. I wish I was, though!

SRD: How can people sign up to be in the show?CT: The show doesn’t exist without the people

from the crowd. We need people to say, “I want to be in the show,” so we can book them.

If you want to be the Air Sex Champ of the Sturgis 75th email Chris right now at [email protected] or turn up at Bikini Beach and the Crossroads’ Jagermeister stage for performances. You know you want to!

Bike shows come and go over the years; some are fancy and some are funky. But the Rat’s Hole Show is with-out peer in motorcycling, and that’s a fact. Once Big Daddy Rat, a.k.a.

Karl Smith, started holding bike shows in Day-tona in 1972, his events quickly became the most attended and sought after, expanding to include Sturgis and holding court across the pond as well. All the coolest bikes turned up at the Rat’s Hole show back in the day, and they still do. That means you can expect to see the best bikes of the Sturgis Rally on Thursday, August 6, when the 27th annual Rat’s Hole Show commences at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. For decades the Rat’s Hole has brought together an impressive crew of international judges with the industry’s most innovative builders—one group looking to identify bikes with personality, function and a solid custom vibe, and the other vying for the cov-eted Rat Trophy, a sure sign that your bike is top notch.

Last year in Sturgis Rat’s Hole introduced a new attraction, the Black Hills Bagger Show-down, a separate show-within-a-show for badass baggers only. Again this year, custom baggers are rolled into the CrossRoads horseshoe in front of the Jägermeister stage for special viewing in the

second annual installment of this added spectacle. Spectators get two shows in one, doubling the dis-tractions. Speaking of distractions, there’s plenty of those at the CrossRoads, from the Bikini Bike Wash, to the Seattle Cossacks Drill Team, Roller Derby Races, and a super variety of good eats and cold drinks. Don’t miss the Chip’s signature drink of the 75th Rally, the Big Woody!

Competition is always tough at a Rat’s Hole show but if you think your bike is a winner go online and register now because bikes must be in place by 10:00 AM Thursday morning, the day of the show. You can ride it in that morning but reg-istration will cost you $45 instead of $35 and you better turn up early. There are 16 classes including the Bagger Showdown and as a 75th Rally bonus, everyone who enters the Rat’s Hole show at Stur-gis this year gets a chance to win Alice Cooper’s Nightmare Bike. If you’re not sure how to classify your bike, see the handy guide at www.ratshole-custombikeshows.com. Judging lasts until 5:00

PM and awards are at 5:45 at the Crossroads

You might think it can’t get any better than winning Best of Show at the world famous Rat’s Hole Bike Show at the Sturgis 75th but for one lucky bike owner the experience doesn’t end there. The winner is presented with the industry-recognized Rat tro-phy on the Wolfman Jack stage inside the Buf-falo Chip amphitheater, right before the headliner band plays at 10:30 PM Thursday night.

Take advantage of this opportunity to partici-

pate in the largest, longest-running, most world renowned bike show in motorcycling. It’s the only way to take home one of the 75th anniversary commemorative award trophies.

Every winner becomes part of the Rat’s Hole legacy. That’s why they call it “the granddaddy of them all.”

The Buffalo Chip’s ubiquitous Rod “Woody” Woodruff loves to meet campers. He roams far and wide at the Chip, so keep your eyes peeled for his smiling face and say hello. And if you want to win classic Chip merch, also look for Woody in the pages of the Sturgis Rider Daily. Each day there’s a different Woody caricature hidden in a photo of an event or location he especially recommends. The first three campers or visitors who report their find to the Chamber of Commerce/Rally Info Cen-ter at the Chip Crossroads win a prize. When motorcycle riders hear the word “Sturgis” we naturally think of the annual Rally. But motor-cycle activity in the Black Hills of South Dakota doesn’t end there. From custom bike shops, to fab-rication companies, to venues that welcome tour-ists and special events, such businesses thrive in South Dakota, partly by riding on the coattails of the Rally but certainly on their own initiative, too. Let’s take a look at what’s here.

Dakota V-Twin is owned and operated by father and son team Randy and Nick Cramer. It’s a full service V-twin performance shop offering paint, restoration, cylinder head work and basic main-tenance, too, for both carbureted and EFI bikes. They have a professionally trained dyno tuner and offer Big Dog service. A full-service, year-round shop, it’s located in Spearfish. Contact: 605-717-0009, www.dakotavtwin.com.

Like the Cramers, Keith Terry has been a stal-wart partner in the Buffalo Chip Challenge stu-dent build program. His company, Terry Compo-nents in Spearfish, makes fuel and starting systems for V-Twins plus super flexible battery cables and accessories. As a long-term team player in the industry, Keith Terry’s gearhead roots and insti-tutional knowledge run deep. Contact: 605-642-5300, 866-388-3779, www.terrycomp.com

Looking for a paint job with skulls, angels or military camo? Dimension Custom Paint & Body in Spearfish can give your bike a totally new look. Operating since 2011, Painters Cody Jensen and Ian Strachan don’t stop with two wheels, either. Think helmets, hot rods, even kitchen appliances. Check out their gallery of work at www. dimen-sioncustom.com, 605-559-3005.

Chris Malo’s company, Baggster, started when he upgraded his father’s Sportster to maintain the handling characteristics of the bike while adding carrying capacity. Now he offers components, kits and complete conversions of Sportsters and Dynas. Formerly with Lehman Trikes, Chris is an

alumni of Dakota Rising, an entrepreneur men-toring program. He shares his business and tech-nical expertise in various community initiatives, including the Buffalo Chip’s Challenge program. Contact: 605-639-0154, www. http://baggster.net.

Jason Mook moved to Spearfish from Charles-ton, SC, last November to take on management and expand the services of Black Hills Chop-pers, now Black Hills Cycles. The Spearfish cus-tom motorcycle shop, owned by Dave Withrow who also owns and operates Maverick Publishing on the shop’s second level, is a full-service shop, offering everything from oil changes to frame-up custom builds and dyno tuning—combined with Mook’s fabrication skills. The shop is in Spearfish; 605-717-5009, www.blackhillscycles.com

Maverick Publishing is the home of American Bagger magazine, which covers bagger touring, performance and customization. Baggers are still leading the aftermarket so there’s plenty to keep pace with, including event coverage, tech stories and feature bikes. The company also produces the official Sturgis Rally magazine.

Contact: Phone:(605) 722-0112, www.Ameri-canbagger.com

Legend Suspension has been in the Black Hills since 1998. They manufacture air and coil sus-pension systems for a variety of Harley-Davidson models, as well as side by sides and UTVs. Owner Jesse Jurrens says pride and quality are the hall-marks of Legend. A leader in suspension tech-nology, Legend’s U.S.-made products are innova-tive yet practical. They’re located on Whitewood Service Road in Sturgis, www.legendsuspensions.com.

Samson Exhaust is a manufacturer of exhaust systems, mufflers and accessories for Harley-Davidson and metric motorcycles. Founder Kenny Price, started the company in 1969 in California and relocated to the Black Hills a few years ago. They make hundreds of styles, from classic Fish-

tails to true dual performance systems with inter-changeable baffles. On Industry Road in Sturgis, 888-5-SAMSON. www.samsonusa.com.

Lonnie and Marianne Isam started Competi-tion Distributing in 1969. The company manu-factures and distributes replacement parts for pre-1929 Harley-Davidsons and other early American antique motorcycles. They’re located in Sturgis. 605-720-1903, www.competitiondist.com

Of course, there are franchised dealerships around, too. Black Hills Powersports and Black Hills Harley-Davidson are both in Rapid City; Indian Motorcycle is in Sturgis.

And if you happen to be in the Hills on Thurs-days through the summer, visit the new local bike nights, instigated by Malo and Cramer and hosted by some of these independent shops and compa-nies on a rotating basis. “Some of us had never vis-ited each other,” said Malo. “The whole purpose was to bring the local industry together.”

Oh, and regular riders are welcome, too, but there’s no bike night during rally week—there’s enough other stuff going on.

It’s a bike show, it’s a rally, it’s today!As you’ve likely read several times by now, the

first Sturgis Rally was a small gathering of riders brought together by the local Indian dealer for some good old-fashioned racing fun. With that in mind, American Iron Magazine and Motorcy-cle Rides & Culture magazine, invite you to show your old iron at the first Indian & Classic Amer-ican Iron Black Hills Rally today at the Buffalo Chip Crossroads.

Yes, it’s a bike show, but it’s more than that. It’s also a celebration of the Sturgis 75th Rally and an appreciation of the historic bikes that have plied the highways of the Black Hills over the decades

since the Rally’s inception. The focus is on Indian motorcycles both old

and new, but all pre-1984 American motorcycles are welcome. Bikes and riders begin gathering at 9:00 AM and if you arrive hungry you’d be wise to stop in at the Sons of Light Ministry to enjoy a free pancake breakfast till 11:00 AM. Field events, including the slow race, plank ride, balloon toss

and more, start around noon. Awards for the bike show, which is sponsored by Dennis Kirk, are at 4:00 PM on the Jägermeister Stage.

Help showcase the staying power of classic iron and tip your cap to Pappy Hoel and the riders and racers who started it all in 1938! Bring your Indian or pre-‘84 machine to the Crossroads on Tuesday, August 4.

ROAD CONDITIONSAs motorcycle riders, we must be vigilant

of all kinds of road conditions, including loosely tied loads, errant dogs, tire treads and other debris or hazards. Sometimes failure to maintain the road surface in a safe condition is the cause of an accident. These are difficult cases because you can’t expect thousands of miles of roads to be in pristine condition all the time. The key factors in determining if there is

a viable claim are whether the condition is indeed hazardous and whether the responsible party had, or should have had, sufficient notice of the condition and a sufficient opportunity to fix the problem or warn the public, but failed to do so. Also, there is always a question as to whether the so-called hazardous condition caused the accident as opposed to rider error. Get detailed photographs as soon as

possible to document the conditions resulting in an accident, before repairs are made and the evidence is gone.

When TORC, The Off-Road Championship Series, debuted at the Buffalo Chip’s new Pow-ersports Complex (PSC) in 2014, no one knew quite what to expect. But this year we do! The power, spectacle and adrenaline rush of these pur-pose-built racing monoliths has to be seen to be believed.

These rowdy race trucks are right at home on the challenging hillside track that’s angled toward spectators for optimal viewing perspective. And what better way to cap off rounds 11 and 12 of the season than at the historic 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Rally!

TORC racing brings a thrilling level of excite-ment to the PSC with 900-horsepower, off-road trucks that hit speeds in excess of 100 mph and soar 200 feet into the air as they pass, bump and sometimes roll.

The racing gets underway today at the newly groomed course and wraps up tomorrow, Wednes-day, August 5. Classes include PRO 2WD and PRO 4W Trophy Trucks plus the Pro Light Class. Vendors are on hand and the pits are chock full of the latest components and technology. Gates open at noon and Racing ends by 6:00 PM.

Tickets are less when purchased online in advance at www.buffalochip.com. They’re avail-able at the gate on race day, too.

Continuing the Buffalo Chip’s recognition of the U.S. military, a new element has been added at the Chip this year to extend a little R&R to veterans, active military personnel, and patriotic campers. Come over to the Hoyt Axton stage to celebrate the spirit of America at the Patriots Pavilion. Sponsored by Twisted Tea, the Patriots Pavilion is a comfortable hang out spot decked out in red, white, and blue. And in keeping with the famed folk singer the stage is named for, you can expect down-home country tunes and laid back blues to soothe the soul.

Tucked in near the South 40 RV Park and Old Barn Steak House the pavilion is also near Veteran’s Row where military groups often camp and congregate. Twisted Tea has developed a spe-cial eagle logo just for the Patriots Pavilion; the area will be decorated in stars and stripes with iconic symbols and imagery that honors the ser-vice of American heroes. As the location grows Twisted Tea will be working with the Chip to host speakers, events, and other activities, add-ing interest for veterans and non-vets alike for several years to come.

“When we were presented with the opportu-nity to be a part of honoring America and our military heroes at the Legendary Buffalo Chip it

was a no brainer” said Bill Grotto Special Events Manager for Twisted Tea and a Navy veteran. “The concept is simple; designate a space spe-cifically designed for all people; veterans, active duty and civilians alike, to come and celebrate America, trade stories, share laughs and honor the fallen. We envision this space to be one of revelry and cheer as well as reverence.”

So kick back in your comfort zone at the Patriots Pavilion to enjoy American roots music, a Twisted Tea, and a celebration of all things U.S.A. with like-minded individuals. Added Grotto, “Honor the home of the brave with the brave men and women who serve.” It’s like the 4th of July every day.

It’s a simple but com-pelling tradition that har-kens back to the first world war: VFW Buddy Poppies

represent the blood shed by American service people and stand in testament to insure their sacrifices are not forgotten.

The poppies are also a symbol of veterans helping veterans because the paper flowers are handmade by disabled veterans in VA hospitals and state veterans homes. Donations received for the poppies directly benefit those same veterans, adding small treats or luxuries to their daily lives.

Myron Eliason, 83-years-old, a Korean-War-era veteran and a member of the VFW post in Belle Fourche, SD, stresses that the poppies are not sold; but if you want to make a donation in exchange for one, you can. He knows because he’s volunteered since 2000, canvassing biker venues on behalf of the VFW during the Sturgis Rally. “I figure it’s a good cause,” he said, “But it’s hard to get people to help.”

Eliason is the last remaining member of a VFW volunteer corps that once covered the rally in greater numbers. Due to some health concerns, he worries this might be the last year to volunteer.

“I like coming here and visiting with the bikers,” he said. “The owner of this place, Rod Woodruff, has been good about letting us come. Some places, like in town, they said we had to pay a vendor fee even as a non-profit, so we had to quit there.”

But a spirit like this doesn’t surrender easily. A rancher, farmer and one-time motorcycle rider, Eliason says he has seen the gener-osity of bikers first hand. He tells of people handing him crushed up bills or stuffing something in his vest pocket only to later find twenties and, even once, a $50 bill. Clearly some still grasp the intrinsic value of this tiny paper flower barely worth a penny.

Watch for Eliason at the CrossRoads and inside the Chip on Thursday, Freedom Celebration Day. He’s the guy wearing the VFW vest and carrying a handful of bright red poppies. He knows it’s worth remembering. Show him that you do, too.

SPecial PaSSengerSflyover honors all veterans today

Welcome home & welcome herePatriotS PaVilion

Veterans from four wars will take flight in a B-1 Lancer bomber and swoop over Sturgis Main Street today in a flyover meant to honor all American military personnel.

The flight, part of the 15th annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony and held on Military Appreciation Day in Sturgis, will take place over Main Street at 3 p.m. today.

Many on the ground may not realize it, but the jet that is the workhorse of Ellsworth Air Force Base in Box Elder will be carrying four

passengers who will be honored for their service in four military campaigns.

They are: Army Pfc. Paul Priest, who served at the famed Battle of Remagen in World War II; Lt. Col. Jerry Teachout, a pilot who served in four wars over a 28-year career; Sgt. Maj. Michael Birnbaum, a combat veteran of the Vietnam War and a commander with the South Dakota National Guard; and Lt. COl. George Swan, a former B-1 weapons officer who served 21 years including during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The flyover is intended to put the final touch on a minute of silence on Main Street.

“During this minute, traffic stops, motorcycle engines are shut down, people hug or pat the backs of those who have served, and the crowds are silent,” Brenda Vasknetz, rally director for the city of Sturgis, said. “Main Street is ‘frozen’ as we reflect on the freedoms that our military and its veterans have protected throughout our nation’s history.”

There’s no explaining it, but the legends Ride—The Ride That Rocks™—just gets better every year. Key to 2015’s knockout success yester-day was the auction of not one but two cus-tom motorcycles at the Silverado Franklin in

Deadwood as the riders gathered. The presence of guest host John Paul DeJoria, builders John Shope and Paul Yaffe, and special attendees the like of Kristy Swanson and Josh Owens raised the bar for sure, and when the dust settled two epic motorcycles went home with two ecstatic owners.

When the auctioneer’s hammer fell, the John Shope-cus-tomized Indian sold for $61,000 and the Trask turbo’d Paul Yaffe-detailed Harley-Davidson went for $60,000! That’s astounding!

“The Legends Ride is one of the most popular annual Buffalo Chip events and not only gives riders a chance to meet some of the biggest celebrities at the rally, but more importantly supports some incredibly worthy local chari-ties,” said Rod Woodruff, Sturgis Buffalo Chip CEO. “We are most excited about the opportunity this year to encour-age students to pursue a career in the motorcycle industry. Everyone who has taken part and paid the rider fee helped to fulfill the dreams of students and special athletes.”

And that’s one reason why the Legends Ride is so darn cool. Another reason? Because only the most connected rid-ers at the Sturgis Rally participate. So keep it on your radar and get in next year before it sells out.

OutlaW PullerS: day 3

The second and final day of Thunder at the Chip Truck & Tractor Pulls was just as loud and just as earth shaking as the first. You simply have to be there to witness this example of raw, unfettered torque to get it.

Now that drivers and pit crews are done racing they’re ready to kick it up at the Sturgis 75th, and who can blame them? Here are the final results from the meet:

Josh Owens is one the Dis-covery Channel’s Moonshiners and he’s garnered quite a fol-lowing in the biker world. Bik-ers and moonshine? Yeah, you could say there’s a connection.

But Josh says his dog, Cutie Pie, is the real star of the show—and the real brains of the opera-tion. But Cutie Pie wasn’t with Josh when we caught up with him at the Industry Party Sun-day night at the Chip’s Russ Brown Event Center. She’s just not comfortable around this many people and it’s been so hot, her owner said.

So without the distraction of the star, we had time to quiz Josh about the other impor-tant thing in his life: moon-shine. Want to know the secret of enjoying ‘shine? Follow Josh’s advice.

SRD: What’s so good about moonshine?Josh Owens: Well, it’s our heritage for one

thing. But really, what’s bad about moonshine? You know what’s bad about moonshine? BAD moonshine!

SRD: How do you tell good moonshine from bad moonshine?

JO: All you gotta do is taste it.

SRD: Is there a right way to drink moonshine?JO: The thing about drinking liquor that most

people don’t get is that good whiskey is not about doin’ shots. It’s not about getting filled up on it. It’s about just wettin’ your pallet. I don’t care if it’s 120 or 130 proof, the stronger it is, the more I like it. When it just comes off the worm (the

condenser) it’s got a lot of flavor in it.

SRD: So you shouldn’t drink a big swig of moon-shine?

JO: When it’s really hot in your mouth it’s cause you’re takin’ a big drink. If you were just wettin your pallet and letting it warm up in your mouth, you’d start realizing there’s all these flavors in it you never tasted before.

You can hang with people who are drinkin’ beer all day long if you just wet your pallet. That’s how you maintain. Just nip it, nip it, nip it. If you take a big ol’ snort it’s gonna knock you right down on the ground.

There you have it folks; more of the news you need to know to enjoy the Best Party Anywhere™ at the Buffalo Chip, compliments of the Sturgis Rider Daily!

Take a break from the mayhem of the Stur-gis 75th and recharge at the annual Biker Belles event. Beginning at 10:00 AM today at the Lodge at Deadwood, this year’s gather-ing includes speakers, vendors, a comfort zone and special guests. The featured speaker is Motor Maid and female riding pioneer Gloria Tramontin Struck who recently celebrated her 90th birthday. Expect a surprise or two related to that!

Biker Belles is open to both men and women, riders and non-riders, and participants are asked to make a $45 contribution to join the festivi-ties. Since its inception Biker Belles has raised money for the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame and Helping with Horsepower. One hundred percent of the registration money goes directly to charity.

Come to the Chip Crossroads tomorrow morn-ing to join a Guinness World Record attempt to gather the most people in their underwear in one place. No, we’re not kidding!

The party starts at 9 AM Wednesday and dress is casual – very casual. Get out of your pajamas and into your skivvies then join hundreds of (un)equally attired friends for live music, drink specials, and the official photograph to document the feat.

There is no cost to join in. The last record was set at the Utah Undie Run in 2011—a mere 2270 people. That’s nothing! This is the Sturgis 75th

and we can do better than that! So shed your inhi-bitions—but keep your undies on. Need some dutch courage? Guzzle a Big Woody: you know, the Chip’s signature 75th Rally cocktail developed by Jagermeister.

Still feeling timid? Maybe this will snap your elastic: 100% of voluntary donations tossed into collection buckets at the event go to the Pros-tate Cancer Foundation. So flash those polka dots, share some lace, and rock those boxers for a record-breaking shebang. It’s 9:00 AM at the Crossroads, Wednesday, August 5.

The Twisted Sister frontman is leading a charmed life and that’s entirely due to his relentless energy, unapologetic lifestyle and PMA. Keep your eyes peeled as you ride the Black Hills:

Snider is doing the same thing after playing at the Buffalo Chip on Monday. What’s PMA? Read on.

SRD: You’ve been riding and coming to Sturgis for years, right??

Dee Snider: I was there in the heyday, the hal-cyon days of $75,000 motorcycles. I’ve certainly had my share of custom choppers but I think it’s great that it’s turned back to a more realistic place. Now it’s all about doing it yourself, tearing it down and not being afraid to try. That’s the real spirit of riding and the motorcycle community. And look how PC we are: even metric bikes are accepted now. People just want to get in the game and it’s great.

SRD: So do you work on your own bikes?DS: I’m terrible with a wrench but as a devout

Horse reader I find myself sorely tempted to take an old bike and go for it. I try to wrench but all my wrench buddies get so impatient watching me struggling, they just say, ‘Gimmie the damn wrench.’

SRD: You just turned 60. How did that feel?DS: It didn’t bother me at all! I always felt that

when you come to these milestones you should look around and ask: do I feel good about where I am? And if you do, you take it in stride. There’s no stopping the clock but you can do your best to go down swinging. I’m in pretty good shape for a 60-year-old dude. Actually, I’m in pretty good shape for a 20-year-old dude!

SRD: That’s such a positive attitude.DS: At 16 years old I bought into this thing:

PMA, Positive Mental Attitude. And I came to this realization that if you went around thinking posi-tively it would basically be a self-fulfilling proph-ecy. My dad used to make fun of me. Every time things went wrong, and certainly a lot of things did, he’d say, ‘PMA, Dee, PMA!’

That’s why I immortalized him in the We’re Not Gonna Take It video. He used to scream at me ‘What are you gonna do with your life’ all the time. ‘I fought in Korea and you’re playing a guitar?’ But now, he goes, ‘Wow, PMA! PMA! It worked!’

SRD: So you had a solid middle class upbringing.DS: My parents drank very little and didn’t

smoke or do drugs, as far as I know. They were first generation, married a long, long time. The idea of taking responsibility for the life you choose, your

actions, your children, were definitely good exam-ples. A prime example of that was when I was on Celebrity Apprentice and I broke my finger in one of those stupid challenges. Donald Trump said: ‘I can’t believe you didn’t sue me! Everybody sues me!’

But I wasn’t raised that way. You don’t blame others for your failings. I mean, I got on a horse sidesaddle wearing a princess gown and a tiara! Nobody had a gun to my head. I got thrown from the horse and snapped my finger.

SRD: You were upfront about your beliefs when you testified before the U.S. Senate about lyrics cen-sorship.

DS: Yes, that was 30 years ago! I’m talking to Rolling Stone when we’re done here, me being the only rocker left alive who testified. (John Denver and Frank Zappa have both passed away.) I still get a lot of respect from people about that.

I am a big supporter of the amendments – all of them. But I’m also pro choice to the max: you should be able to speak as you wish, you should be able to protect yourself as you wish, wear a helmet if you wish. I stood up, I did the right thing and I’m proud. At the time it was not a wise choice.

Post testifying, my phones were tapped, my mail was checked and it was damaging to my band, Twisted being the poster child for every-

thing wrong with heavy metal – except we weren’t! The irony is, as crazy as we were we didn’t sing about sex and drugs, we sang about standing up and fighting for your beliefs. We were about empowering people with our music.

SRD: What’s it like to play the Buffalo Chip?DS: I’ve been out there 8 times. I started com-

ing out when I was hosting the VH1 Classics show All roads Lead to the Chip. I’m great friends with the Woodruff family and I love the experience. It’s something I tell riders, go to the Chip at least once, there’s nothing like it.

This year I’m coming out to perform with a solo band. It’s gonna be great to play for the Chip audi-ence but I’m also leaving a couple of days to hang out and ride with a buddy of mine.

SRD: I have to ask about your hair. You know the ‘80s are over, right?

DS: First of all, mine is naturally bouffont. Everybody else was using VO5 and Aquanet to keep theirs looking big but I’m the original hair farmer. My wife swears the longer I’m on stage the bigger it gets. When I’m on stage it’s very Samsonian, it’s like my strength comes on when I let my hair down and ROCK! You gotta have something to flail around or you’re not rockin’.

You know, I get credited by some with actu-ally inventing head banging, which I don’t think is true. I was just trying to get the hair out of my face.

SRD: Are you still not gonna take it anymore?DS: First of all it goes back to the review. I think

it was Rolling Stone that gave the single this review when it first came out: ‘What from whom?’ That was it, three words, a three word review! So f**k you, Rolling Stone. It’s one of the greatest songs of rebellion of all time, and it has staying power.

SRD: So: What from whom?DS: It’s like this: When you’re a kid it’s all

black and white but when you get older you real-ize things are not black and white, not if you’re a thinking person and I’m a thinking person. Inspi-rationally, it was about my dad, my teachers, the bosses, the kids in school who rejected me, the girl-friends who’d tell me I was never gonna be any-thing. I wrote it so people could read their own situation into the lyrics.

SRD: You seem so happy for a guy whose persona is being a heavy metal madman.

DS: I feel blessed to have had my moment in the sun – and I’ve been refusing to leave ever since.
