Ames Chamber businesses and organizations visited the State Capitol on March 14 for the annual Ames Day at the Capitol. This luncheon event is an opportunity to show our legisla-tors all the great things the Ames community has to offer.
In addition to showcasing Ames businesses and organizations, the Chamber and their sponsors pro-vided lunch catered by Hickory Park for all the policymakers and their staff members. It was a way to say “thank you,” not only for the attention and funding that has come to Ames and its entities over the years, but also for the service our elected offi cials provide their constituents.
With just a few weeks remain-ing in the legislative session, the Ames Chamber also used this event to encourage legislators to do what they can to promote a climate that allows businesses to thrive in the state of Iowa.
The Chamber thanks the fol-lowing organizations who spon-sored this important event:

A re you interested in serving in leader-ship positions in the community now or in the future? Then Leadership Ames is for you.
The Leadership Ames program was created by the Ames Chamber of Com-merce to develop informed, involved and concerned community leaders in the Ames area. This is a program that gives both experienced and developing leaders a broader view of civic leadership respon-sibilities and opportunities through direct contact with a wide spectrum of institu-tions and people who shape the community where we work and live.
Leadership Ames – Class XXVII begins in September 2013, and continues with regular sessions through May 2014. The
11 full-day sessions are conducted at vari-ous locations in Ames and central Iowa with one session approximately every three weeks. During the year, participants listen to presentations, debate issues, participate in class activities, lead discussions, visit with area leaders and organizations, tour
the community and get to know individu-als representing a broad cross-section of the community.
More than 330 individuals have com-pleted the curriculum and many are extensively involved with community and Ames Chamber of Commerce lead-
ership opportunities. The program is limited to approximately 16 to 20 par-ticipants who are members of the Ames Chamber of Commerce, have an interest in leadership roles and community ser-vice and who reside in the greater Ames area.
Participant selection is made by the Leadership Ames selection committee and co-chairs on the basis of written appli-cation and/or interview. Participants are selected from a cross-section of business, professional, non-profi t and local residents. Tuition costs, scholarship information and other details will be available in the appli-cation materials online (www.ameschamber.com) and at the Chamber offi ces beginning June 1.

Many businesses shy away from start-ing an internship program because they don’t know how to go about developing a program tailored to their spe-cifi c needs. In an effort to encourage orga-nizations in the Ames/Story County area to cultivate internship programs, the Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC) has created an Employer Internship Guide.
Employers can consult the guide to begin building a framework for their particular organization. Once they have an intern pro-gram in mind, the guide provides a host of information that will help area employers
connect with students. Contact informa-tion is provided for both Iowa State Univer-sity’s Career Management Service and Des Moines Area Community College. In addi-tion, information about the AEDC’s job board website, workinames.com is included.
The AEDC stands ready to assist area companies as they craft the perfect intern-ship program for their organizations. Once an intern program is in place, both business-es and students reap the rewards of working together. Contact Angela Davidson at (515) 232-2310 or [email protected] to request the Employer Internship Guide.

On April 2, the Ames Chamber marked the start of their 2013 Total Resource Campaign (TRC) with Volunteer Training. Celebrating with the theme “and the award goes to … Ames!,” volunteers listened to Hy-Vee store manager and Chamber Board member Randy Kruse’s tips on the customer experience, and heard words of encouragement from 2013 TRC Co-Chairs Jolene Randall (Knapp-Tedesco Insurance Agen-cy) and Gary Botine (Sauer-Danfoss).
Chamber member volunteers are marketing sponsor-ships and attracting new members for the Chamber over the next several weeks. Volunteers will assist companies with selecting sponsorship options best suited to meet their organization’s marketing needs. The TRC offers Ames Chamber members an opportunity to market their businesses through the Chamber’s programming and products.
Special thanks go to Randy Kruse and Hy-Vee for generously sponsoring our Volunteer Training Sessions.
Please contact Crystal Davis at (515) 232-2310 to learn more about the Chamber's Total Resource Cam-paign.
Join us at Alpha Copies, 3615 Lin-coln Way, to give a two-minute “shameless plug” about your organization while handing out busi-ness cards, brochures and/or any other promotional materials that describe your business or organiza-tion. If you’ve never attended before, make this month your fi rst.
We purposely keep this event small to ensure great one-on-one interaction with fellow Chamber members, so your RSVP is very important. Please register by calling the Chamber offi ce at (515) 232-
2310 no later than noon on Tues-day, April 23. The event and con-tinental breakfast are free, but you must RSVP to participate. See you at Breakfast.

One of the many community ser-vice programs that the Young Pro-fessionals of Ames participate in each year is the Ames Main Street Farm-ers’ Market’s KidsZone. The KidsZone, located in Tom Evans Park just off Main Street and adjacent to the farmers’ market booths, provides kids visiting the mar-ket with their parents an opportunity to engage in free, healthy and fun activities.
KidsZone is coordinated in partnership with the Main Street Cultural District, the entity that organizes the farmers’ market, since it was established more than two years ago. YPA members serve as volun-teers and work to fi nd local partner orga-nizations to help host the KidsZone.
In 2011, the fi rst year of the Farmers’ Market and KidsZone, YPA partnered with organizations each of the 14 weeks of the market, providing volunteers to staff the tent each week. In that fi rst year, the KidsZone averaged 75 children per weekend who enjoyed activities includ-ing grass heads, tic tac toe toss, ballon animals, bookmarks and shadow puppets. In 2012, the KidsZone averaged about 60 kids each week with activities includ-ing Mother’s Day fl owers, paper plate guitars, balloon splash, potato and apple stamping, book mobile and an insect zoo, among other activities.
KidsZone would not be possible with-out the wonderful support of the partner organizations that have provided activi-ties and volunteers. Some of the organi-zations who have participated include: Ames Public Library, ChildServe, Coun-try Landscapes, LSI, Youth & Shelter Services, ISU Extension, McFarland Clinic, 4-H Camp, Prairie Flower Chil-dren’s Center, Big Brothers and Big Sis-ters, Sylvan Learning, Pyfferoen Pediat-ric Dentistry, ISU Insect Zoo, ZAO525, Ames Parks and Recreation Small Won-ders, Perfect Games, Caleb Jamin Studios and Bickford Assisted Living.
In 2013, YPA will host KidsZone the opening weekend of the farmers’ market and every third Saturday of the summer.
Volunteer Spotlights: BRIANNE ANDERSONWhy do you participate in KidsZone?
I am one of the lucky ones that have been able to be involved with the Kids-Zone from the start. Things have changed every year and it has been fun to be part of a project and see how it evolves. I am defi nitely a person who loves kids, so I often look for volunteer opportunities where I get to have fun with children. This seemed like a perfect fi t.
What is your favorite or most rewarding part of volunteer-ing for the KidsZone?
I love seeing kids who come back week to week. I often volunteer in the booth for YPA weekends and Ames Public Library weekends, and it is fun to see kids and families numerous times. I also like meeting so many new community members. Whether they are other volunteers with YPA or people visiting the booth, it is awesome to get to chat with and meet new people.
Why should Young Profes-sionals of Ames continue participating with this vol-unteer opportunity?
Each year has been adjusted to make the KidsZone something that benefi ts the
farmers’ market and is a success for YPA. Not only does the booth give great expo-sure for YPA, it has also built a wonder-ful reputation as being something fun for kids to do at the market.
MICHELLE PRICEHow and why did you get involved with the Ames Farmers’ Market KidsZone?
I originally got involved with the Ames Farmers’ Market KidsZone when I joined YPA's Community Outreach and Partnerships committee. I thought it would be a great way to give back to the community, while participating in a no-stress, fun environment with kids.
What is your favorite or most rewarding part of vol-unteering for the KidsZone?
I look forward to meeting the kids and completing the fun activities with them. Last year, we had a water balloon dunk tank and the kids and had so much fun.
Why should Young Profes-sionals of Ames continue participating with this vol-unteer opportunity?
This volunteer activity is such a fun time for kids and adults. You are helping make the Ames Farmers’ Market a suc-cessful community event.
