From Our Side Of The Fence

When do you think youll get in the eld?

    A) How many acres do you have and how do you plan to use those acres? B) How will last years crop year affect this years cropping plans for

your dairy? C) How have the crops youve planted in your career changed and why

did you make those changes? D) When do you think youll get in the eld? Explain. E) How do you think this years growing season will go? F) Whats the earliest and latest youve ever got in the eld? G) Tell us about your farm and plans for your dairy this year.

Art HoffmanTheilman, Minn. Wabasha County 125 cowsA) We farm 200 tillable acres, which includes 90 acres of corn, 46 acres of oats seeded with alfalfa and 64 acres of estab-lished hay. B) I dont think last year will affect this

years crop. Im just worried about running out of hay. C) All of our machinery wore out and didnt get re-placed, so now about 90 percent of our eld work is custom hired. We used to make all wet corn, but with the number of cows and the limited acres we have, we now use it for corn silage or earlage. We also now make balage out of oats instead of dry bales. The al-falfa is now mostly haylage, and not as much dry hay as it used to be. This will also be the second year we plant winter rye. We hope to chop it to use for the youngstock. We will plant corn after the winter rye has been taken off the elds. There isnt a lot of land in the area to rent or buy so we have to get the most out of the few acres we have. D) Hopefully by the week of April 28 we will be in the eld. We have clay ground and a lot of hillsides. We cant get on those areas too fast. E) I hope it warms up and stays warm. I hope weve gotten through the drought cycle. Theres plenty of moisture out there. We can hope for a good year.F) The earliest was in 2012 when we started planting in late March. It went from one extreme to the next because last year, 2013, was the latest. We didnt start planting corn until June 8.G) My wife, Karen, and I have a daughter, Amanda, and a son, Tyler. We have one part-time milker, Becky Gilsdorf. This year we plan to build a heifer shed and bring all our heifers home. For the past 20 years, our heifers have been custom raised.

Tim PieperLonsdale, Minn. Rice County 420 cowsA) We have 966 acres and plan to have 591 acres of corn, 133 acres of oats and alfalfa, 129 acres of established al-falfa and 113 acres of soybeans. B) It hasnt really af-

fected it that much. All the acres of alfalfa we have were seeded last year. About 50 acres we will take off a rst crop and then plant corn (those 50 acres were counted as corn acres in the questions above). Half of our alfalfa last year was affected by winter kill. Right now, were feeding more corn silage and soy hulls. We had a lot of carryover feed from 2012 so thats what saved us. C) Since I rst started farming, corn has changed. There were no BT traits, roundup ready gene or root-worm traits. Now corn has all three of these traits. This new corn yields a little higher and the standabil-ity is a little better. I also dont have to use as much insecticide. We are also planting soybeans this year, which we didnt do last year. We might look into roasting our own versus buying.D) Hopefully, by about April 21 we will be in the elds at least to plant oats and then go right into corn. Its just about dry enough now. A few of our neighbors have planted their oats. E) Hopefully it will go better than last year. It all de-pends on what Mother Nature decides to give us. The alfalfa is starting to look nice. F) The earliest weve been in the eld was in the early 2000s when we were planting oats by March 26 and we injected manure by the end of February. The elds were dry by then. Last year was de nitely the latest. We had 240 acres of corn planted by May 17, but we didnt nish until July 3. G) I farm together in partnership with my parents, Ray and Bridget, along with ve of my siblings Chrissy Duhme, Brian, Nick, Dan and Tracy. I have two sisters, Beth and Maize, who dont work on the family farm and two other sisters, Maria and Em-ily, who are still in school. We raise all our heifers and bulls are sold at two weeks. This winter, we just got done building a calf barn for animals from two months old to about seven months old. This summer, we are going to build a bunker for earlage. Next year, we are going to look into the possibility of a different parlor.

Aaron NelsonRichland Center, Wis.Richland County215 cowsA) This year, we willhave about 1,050 acres of crops. We will haveabout 500 acres of corn,200 acres of soybeans,35 acres of winter wheat and 315 acres of alfalfaor an alfalfa/grass mix.

    B) Last year, we had a lot winterkill in our alfalfa elds, resulting in a lot more seeding done. This year, our alfalfa looks pretty good so far, so we will prob-ably seed less alfalfa this year. Last years hay makingwas tough. The weather didnt cooperate very well to get a good-quality forage. Hopefully, we can get abetter crop made this year.C) We started planting soybeans about 12 years ago.By planting soybeans it allows us do more rotating on our corn-on-corn acres. We started planting winter wheat about ve years ago. The winter wheat givesus some straw to bed calves, some grain to sell, and aplace to spread some manure in midsummer. We have seeded Roundup Ready alfalfa for the last two sea-sons. We really like this because we have been able to get three good-quality cuttings in the seeding year. All of our corn is now Roundup Ready some triple stackor Smart Stax. It allows for an easy herbicide cleanuppass if it is needed later. D) We did some chisel plowing last week, and then the rain came. I hope we can seed our alfalfa the week of April 21. We will probably wait until sometimearound May 1 to plant corn.E) Well, right now we are off to a slow start, with the cold daytime temps and low ground temperature. Wejust received a wet, rainy weekend of about 4.5 inches of rain. Before that, the soil was pretty dry. Subsoilmoisture seems to be low. The alfalfa elds are juststarting to green up, so the hay crop will probably bea little later than usual. F) Two years ago we were seeding alfalfa the last week of March, had the manure pit all pumped out,and were just waiting to start planting corn. I cantremember when we havent at least started seeding alfalfa by April 20. Doesnt look like well be able have the manure hauled out until after April 25, so itkind of looks like this will be the latest.G) I farm in partnership with my brother and parents, and my wife, Holly. We have 185 cows being milkedtwice a day in a double- ve, auto ow parlor. Themilk cows are kept in sand-bedded freestalls. Our drycows are also in sand-bedded freestalls, with a bed-ded pack area for calving. We just recently installed the CowScout program in the herd. We really like the program for helping us catch cows in heat that were previously missed. We are also looking into doingsome updating with milking equipment in the parlor this year.

... less stress... more comfort... better milk-out.

High quality milk production is a priority at the Keizer familys dairy farm near Delavan, Wisconsin, where Dave and Carol Keizers daughters Abby and Katie are the fourth generation. Abby does much of the herd management responsibilities, and she reports that they milk 100 cows with an 80-lb herd average and SCC of 60,000.

Udder Comfort removes swelling so our heifers do better. It softens udders better than anything. More comfort means much better milk-out, she says.

We dont have to keep putting the milking machine back on because they milk out so smoothly. Softening the udder relieves stress after calving so the transition into milking doesnt drag them down.

They just do so much better with Udder Comfort in the fresh cow routine.

We make sure to put it on all udders after each milking for the fi rst few days after calving. I know it is the best product out there because when I am putting it on the udders, I can literally feel the difference.

For external application to the udder only after milking, as an essential component of udder management. Always wash and dry teats thoroughly before milking.

DeLaval Clover LinerThe shape of things to comeI was using a mouthpiece vented liner which caused problems with squawking and teat end health. After switching to the DeLaval Clover liner and Della Barrier teat dip, I started receiving premiums from my local creamery. The teat end health of our cows is better than its ever been. You can actually hear the radio or have a conversation in the parlor because there isnt any squawking with the DeLaval Clover liners. Not only have these liners made me money, but my wife is happier knowing that the herd is milking comfortably. I would sell the cows before going back to a mouthpiece vented liner!

Across Minnesota in recent weeks, our county Ameri-can Dairy Associations have been crowning their local dairy princesses. In Iowa, dairy promotion groups are hold-ing banquets and doing the same. And in South Dakota, we

just selected another state dairy prin-cess. Regardless of how and where its done, a dairy princess coronation is a fun time for local dairy enthu-siasts and an exciting event for the young women and their families. But its really after the celebra-tion that counts for the dairy industry as a whole, because the crown and banner is simply a tool with which we can reach out to the people who buy what we produce. A dairy prin-cess title comes with both great op-portunity and great responsibility. Becoming a dairy princess, usually

fresh out of high school or in the rst year or two of col-lege, is not without its challenges. Dairy farmers like my husband and me contribute signi cant money to the dairy checkoff with the expectation that those funds will help grow dairy sales and reinforce consumer con dence. As part of that, we hold up our dairy princesses as ex-amples of all thats good and wholesome about dairy farm-ing and the people who choose to do it. And in the case of state dairy princesses, we place them in the media spotlight and depend on them to perform in a way that reinforces dairys credibility. It requires a time commitment, commu-nication skills and personal responsibility. Thats why Midwest Dairy invites dairy princesses to attend our Minnesota promotion workshop in May, and our Iowa dairy princess workshop in June. The title comes with tools. The workshops Midwest Dairy will host include ses-sions on how to be a dairy champion in media interviews and public presentations. Participants receive background on what consumers would like to hear about dairy farm-ing and dairy products. They learn how to use social media to tell their dairy story, and what resources Midwest Dairy offers to help them with their appearances throughout the year. In Minnesota, a weekend format also allows for im-proving classroom presentation skills, and of course choos-ing the next 12 Princess Kay nalists. The North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa state dairy princesses will also participate. This year, the participants in our May week-end will enjoy a kickoff presentation from Greg Peterson of the farm boy group thats made itself a YouTube sensation, the Peterson Brothers. Were excited, and I think the dairy princesses will be, too. Its hard for busy young women to commit to a week-end or even a full day in their busy lives, let alone a full year of carrying out a dairy princess role. We wish every single young woman eligible to participate in the dairy princess program would do so, and every single local dairy princess would attend the workshops weve planned. What theyll discover is an opportunity to boost their own per-sonal skills for everyday life. Perhaps even more, theyll realize the unique opportunity theyve been given because of their connection to dairy. Seena Glessing is a consultant for Midwest Dairy As-sociation who implements the dairy princess programs in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. She is also an agriculture education teacher at Howard Lake-Waver-ly-Winsted High School. Seena was a nalist for Princess Kay of the Milky Way in 1999. She and her husband, Dan, and their four children along with Dans parents are dairy farmers from Waverly, Minn.
