Rescue Team Qualifications & Training
Rope Rescue &Confined Space Rescue
NFPA 1670 2009 details standards on operations and training for technical search and rescue incidents
NFPA 1006 2008 lists standards for rescue technician professional qualifications
NFPA 1983 2006 is the standard on equipment for rescue and emergency services
29 CFR 1910.146 paragraphs K and L
Qualification of standards is to a specific area only with a specific level for each area
Rescuers will be identified by their specialty area and level of qualification
Specialty areas include:
Rope Rescue High Angle
Confined Space Rescue Trench Rescue
There are two levels of basic rescue training and two levels of Technician qualifications:Basic Rescue Qualifications◦ Awareness – Code Red Safety does not use this
qualification for it’s rescue workers.
◦ Operational Technician Rescue Qualifications◦ Tech Level I ◦ Tech Level II
Personnel will make the decision as to what type of system will be set up to retrieve victim(s).
Will be responsible for determining the perimeter of the rescue work zone
Verifies the communications system that will be used to contact outside emergency responders
Monitor the atmosphere for oxygen levels, flammable limits and toxic atmospheres
Packaging a victim in a device for retrieval.
Personnel at the Operations level will have successfully completed courses in:
Advanced training in the selection and utilization of confined space entry equipment
Rope rescue training at the NFPA Operations Level
Advanced First Aid / CPR Hazardous Materials Operations training
Supervisory levelThrough additional training and experience these personnel are
capable of developing and implementing complex retrieval systems for situations encountered at facilities.
Personnel at this level shall be capable of: Developing hazard isolation and control requirements. Develop rescue preplans for the site and implement the plan as
prescribed. Constructing advanced rope lowering and raising systems for high
angle rescue. Selecting and using of proper PPE at a site.
Personnel at this level will have successfully completed courses in:
Rope rescue training at the Technician Level Medical training at the First Responder Level Hazardous Materials Technician training
Highest field supervisory level. This level is achieved by personnel that have thorough education, training and experience and have gained additional knowledge in multiple rescue disciplines.
Personnel at this level shall be capable of: All capability listings in the previous categories. Specialty topics related to job operations where a
certificate or diploma was earned upon successful completion of training.
Completed advanced training or work experience in the rescue disciplines related to rope rescue; confined spaces; construction; structural collapse; trench and excavation; machinery, production and processing operations.
Code Red Safety trains it’s rescue personnel to the above standards, it’s Rescue leads are rated as Tech Level I or higher, seconds are rated as Operational level or above.
All Rescue leads have at least 1 year experience in rescue, and performed at least 2 - 40 hour rescue classes at least one of those courses must be with an affiliated Code Red Safety rescue trainer.
