Aquarius problems voidHart Juno nomination"Internal misunderstanding" is being blamedfor what should have been a shoo-in Junonomination for Male Vocalist Corey Hart thisyear. The Aquarius recording artist scoredimpressive radio play with his releases thisyear, with his Bang! album one of the Canconleaders on the RPM 100. The album entered thenational chart at No. 28 (April 7, 1990) andenjoyed several weeks of charting. A singlefrom the album, A Little Love, garnered muchCHR action and also made impressive movesup the national chart. Consequently the albumsold more than 70,000 units which would havequalified Hart for a Juno nomination in at leastone category.
"I was discouraged and I felt bad forCorey when I realized we had missed out on asure nomination," explains Aquarius presidentKeith Brown, who concludes with, "It was amistake and it's no reflection on how we feelabout Corey or the Juno Awards."

with Elvira CapreeseI don't understand it ... !I think that after along time in the industry, your instincts begin tosharpen. This Wednesday past, while havinglunch, I felt that I would get this kind of a notetoday and guess what! (EC: You did . . . !) andit was one of those Stop The Presses kind ofnotes. Here it is in its entirety: "Due to personalconsiderations, I have decided against movingto Discus in Montreal and have asked Mr.Kroum Pindoff to allow me to rescind my priorresignation and remain at Pindoff Record Salesand Music World. Mr. Pindoff has graciouslyaccepted. (signed) Jerry Wipf." Enough said?(EC: Enough said . . . !)
Bruce Allen takes on CARAS . ! It hasbeen reported that west coaster Bruce Allen istaking issue with CARAS and its choice oftalent that will appear on the Vancouver ver-sion of the Junos. Allen is asking questionsabout who the performers are and indicating

that if the Junos and CBC don't believe inCanadian performers, "why should the Cana-dian people?" He favours "giving those whohave been nominated and who deserve to behonoured a fair chance to show Canada, inperformance, how good they are and hov, farthey've come. Isn't that what the Junos are allabout?" The Junos are bringing in foreign rapartist M.C. Hammer at a reported cost of$40,000 and Allen makes a very appropriateremark: "If our industry feels the show needs aheavy hitter to bring in the ratings, they shouldlook to themselves first and ask why? If theydon't think Paul Janz is important enough towarrant a performance, why should the Cana-dian people? Nobody is going to believe thesepeople are important unless CARAS, the musicindustry and the CBC deem them to be impor-tant." This very nationalistic feeling came tolight when Allen spoke at RPM's 25th Anniver-sary Banquet. In the past, Allen has been anardent supporter of the Junos and received theWalt Grealis Achievement Award fromCARAS (EC: On Camera . . . !) in 1987 andserved on the CARAS board for a number ofyears. (EC: Well respected in the industry andpossibly one of the Top Ten managers inCanada . . . !)
For The Record ... ! No matter what you hearelsewhere, the Junos were televised for the firsttime in March of 1975 at the Queen ElizabethTheatre at Toronto's Exhibition Place with PaulAnka as host. (EC: RPM is not just anotherpretty face!) That was a year we lost two of theJuno presentation replicas. One vanished andwas last seen on a private jet and the otherended up in pieces when it was dropped by aclumsy CBC person. The retail value of thosetwo pieces of history would be in the thous-ands .. . today!Cancon artists at sea . . . ! All the artistscoming back from their stint on the RegentI Ioliday 's Pegasus are very complimentary ofthe food and service. A recent article in one ofthe dailies said that this ship scored very low inthe U.S. sanitary inspection. To the artistsgoing aboard, I can tell you that the QEII, theNorway and many of the big ships don't alwayspass this very rigid inspection. But recently, thePegasus got a score of 86 which is a pass ... andI can assure you that Captain Yiannis Papado-poulos, who I know from the Atlas, will takethis ship right to the top of the list. (EC: May Irecommend the week when Liona Boyd will beaboard . . !)
Terry Trojek retires ... ? I couldn't believeit. After twenty years in the business, more thanseven with Taylor Record Sales, almost three atWEA and the last ten with Saturn, Terry hasdecided to pack it in. He has gained a veryrespectable reputation over the years, and hewas one of the true "hit pickers" in this country(EC: And that's how he will beremembered . . . !) We'll miss him. Terry ismoving to Arnprior and isn't it just like him toleave without any fanfare.
How come Roch Voisine never gets a Junonod? Roch has to be the most successful record-ing artist in this country. I mentioned last yearhow visible he was at MIDEM and Attic's AlMair confirms that Roch "was visible all over
Cannes" in the form of giant four colour post-ers. In fact, he has sold over 2,000,000 albumsin France, which makes him a big artist, wouldn't you say? He has sold a lot of recordsin this country as well. I've seen the guy per-form and if the Juno people are looking for adynamic performer, who happens to be Cana-dian, they should take a look at this NewBrunswicker. He's a class act in both Englishand French. (EC: You said that last year . . . !)
Hey! Hey! HMV . . .! Talk about retail PR,I IMV's Paul Alofs is on a roll. Fresh from hisindustry ear & eye turning Don't Give Up YourDay Job awards, he is now opening his headoffice to promote a couple of new releases. Paulis laying on a couple of tables loaded with foodand drink "and lots of surprises," he says for thelaunch of Glass Tiger's Simple Mission andRoxette's Joyride. The date is Feb. 26 at 5 pm.(EC: Is that an open invitation . . . ?)
Tribute to Catherine . . . ! If the CARASpeople wanted to pay tribute to Leonard Cohenon a Canadian teevee show, they should haveincluded Catherine McKinnon who does oneCohen composition like no one else ever has!(EC: Look into it . . !)
Promotion is so basic and so easy. Thispast week, CHUM -FM's Roger Ashby in-cluded me once again on his "who's celebrat-ing a birthday today." I'm not really surprisedby the number of industry people who listen toRoger, because after all these years, the lettersand faxes of congratulations and the nice giftsI receive is testament to his popularity. COVER STORY by Alison Mercer
Voisine's Double solidifies success in Europe, QuebecAlthough English Canadians may feel asthough Roch Voisine came from nowhere andimmediately made a dent in the internationalmarket with his smash hit, Helene, the voyagefor this Star Records recording artist was notquite so cut and dried.
"I feel very lucky," says Voisine of hissuccess. "But it was a lot of work, a lot of hardwork."
After almost a year and a half of solidtouring and writing, Voisine headed back intothe studio last summer to record Double, adouble bilingual album which is available innon-francophone countries as a single Englishalbum, which in under five months has alreadysold in excess of 300,000 units in France alone, and has shipped 20,000 units in Canada.Worldwide, Double has sold close to 500,000.
The first single, A Fishing Day, is als:,enjoying success on national charts, and fig-ures on all four of RPM's charts, establishing itas a potent crossover success.
Voisine grew up in New Brunswick, where although his primary passion washockey, he always kept his music close at handsince getting his first guitar at the age of 14.
"I was a shy kind of kid, I wouldn't talkabout things like other people would, so I wrotethem down as songs," he explains.
An injury ruled out a hockey career, andsoon afterwards Voisine's manager Paul Vin-cent, invited him to come to Montreal to try hishand at performing.
Vincent secured various successful tele-vision spots for Voisine and shortly thereafter
Capitol targets all formatsfor McLauchlan releaseCapitol Records has pulled all stops in thepromotion of Murray McLauchlan's latest al-bum, The Modern Age. This is McLauchlan's17th album and it sees him re -united with co-producer Ken Friesen (Hard Rock Town, OnThe Boulevard).
Capitol's Ralph Alfonso stresses thatMcLauchlan's release "is not a country al-bum." The label is working all three radioformats (AOR, CHR, A/C). Country program-mers however, have moved quickly on the firstsingle, a cassette single of the title track. Im-pressive chart and playlist action has moved thetrack up the RPM Country 100 where this weekit jumps to No. 84 with a bullet.
Alfonso also points out that McLauchlanplays all the guitars on The Modern Age,"something he's never done before," says Al-fonso, "revealing himself as a great underratedplayer in the process."
A video of,The Modern Age, directed byaward -winner John Lloyd (Holly Cole, MaryMargaret O'Hara) "is a visual stunner," saysAlfonso, "and by placing Murray in a live bandsetting, puts him in the proper context for themusic."
McLauchlan will be mounting a cross-country tour of Canada for April and May.
Voisine was offered a weekly series called TopJeunesse, filmed in Montreal and described byVoisine as "a French version of AmericanBandstand." The show remained on the air fora year and a half during which time Voisinesigned with Star Records run by Andre DiCe-sare, who also helped with the production of theVoisine albums. Star Records is distributed byanother Quebec -based company, Select Distri-bution.
After the record deal was in place, Voisinecameout with the album Helene in June of 1989and watched the single soar to the top of inter-national charts. With the album's success it wasapparent that Voisine was going to have toleave Top Jeunesse, there just weren't enoughhours in the day for a full-time recording careerand weekly television show.
Voisine spent the next year and a half inEurope, touring and writing. Currently that firstalbum is still selling, and is closing in on the 1.5million mark for worldwide units sold. Voisinekept on working the album until his return tothe studio in the summer of 1990 when herecorded Double.
As to whether Voisine feels that theDouble material is different from that of He-lene, Voisine says that he hopes it is: "Thingshave changed. I have grown older and I seethings differently. I think this album has moreof a classical feel to it, there is a lot of strings inmany of the songs and hopefully it will appealto a wider audience."
Hoskins' debut sportsinnovative CD coverTrue North Records has tapped the creativefield for "new ways to bring the fun back toalbum graphics," says the label's JehanneLanguedoc. She goes on to point out that "In themain however, there continues a mundanesameness, given the small surface of the CDbooklet."
True North harnessed the creative talentof well known album designer Bart Schoalesand together they have come up with whatLanguedoc tags "a unique" new CD packagefor Gregory Hoskins and the Stickpeople'sdebut release Moon Come Up.
Languedoc explains that the cover fea-tures Hoskins and the band standing in front ofa full moon. The photo was done at DigitalMagic House incorporating a front projectionspecial effects system.
The photo was then placed on the front ofthe booklet with the moon, which is about thesize of a loonie, die -cut out of the booklet andthen printed on the CD disc itself. "When thebooklet and the CD are placed back into thejewel box," says Languedoc, "the effect is thatof a 3-D moon. You can then, by turning the CDdisc, create your own version of the cover bysimply moving the moon. Presto!" she con-cludes, "You can now have a quarter, half orfull moon."
Moon Come Up, Hoskins' first album wasreleased Feb. 25.
The Double tour will be kicking off at theBercy in Paris on March 26, Voisine's birthday. It is a coincidence that has the singer a littlenervous.
"We didn't plan it that way, but it was theonly date we could get. I don't know whatthey've got planned," he laughs.
The tour will include 11 musicians and inParis there will be a thirty piece string sectionas well. After the entourage finishes touring thefrancophone European territories it returnshome for Canadian dates in the fall of 1991. Alldates will be to between 6,000 and 17,000 spec-tators.
Voisine is enthusiastic about the upcom-ing tour, stating that he wants to give people"more than a show."
Roch Voisine is settling in to his relativelynew whirlwind schedule these days. He ac-knowledges that at first things "were a littlerough," but that now he is "Getting into thepace of things, and really enjoying it."

ROGER McGUINN - Folk/RockBack From RioArista ARCD-8648-N
Formerly of The Byrds, McGuinn hasfar from been out of commission musi-cally, participating in and leading differ-ent projects. The lead single, King OfThe Hill, is steady and carefully paced,as are all the tracks. Produced byMcGuinn and David Cole, the album isa mature folk pop which has a well-grounded expertise to it, and the inten-sity of McGuinn's songwriting is wellbalanced by the melodic pace of themusic. Suddenly Blue, The Time HasCome and Someone To Love are allfirm examples of McGuinn undeniableprowess as a songwriter and musician. The album should make hefty appear-ances on multiple formats and will at-tract buyers of all generations. (CDReviewed) - AM
TODD RUNDGREN - Rock2nd WindWarner Bros CD 26478-P
This latest album was recorded live atone of his shows at The Fine ArtsTheatre in San Francisco. The currentsingle, Public Servant, strays from thecustomary Rundgren attitude, flowingover into a more traditional rock genre, the song is good, heavy but happening. The rest of the album has an almostfantasy quality to it, with its new agerock sound. Lyrically Rundgren man-ages to be straight ahead yet enig-matic. Opening track Change Myselfand I Have To Be Alone are particularyenjoyable, while The Smell Of Money'sslight silliness with its Broadway styledvocals shows Rundgren's comfort withhis chosen field. The multitude ofRundgren diehards will quickly add thisto their collection with much satisfac-tion. (CD reviewed) - AM
THE DREAM WARRIORS - RapAnd Now The Legacy BeginsIsland 391 310-2-W
Although new to the commercial aspectof rap, King Lou and Capital Q, the duowho make up the Dream Warriors, areveterans of rap. Their material is nothardcore rap, but hip hop, funk dance orrock with rap on top. Never monoto-
nous, the Warriors' tunes are all fun, inthe melody, the beat and especially inthe thoughtful lyrics. Wash Your FaceIn My Sink and My Definition skyrock-eted to the top of charts in the U.K., andwe more lethargic Canadian are catch-ing on, if at a slightly slower pace. Nextsingle Ludi is sure to do as well. TheDream Warriors are the wave of thefuture, and are heading for some hugesuccess. (CD reviewed) - AM
I NAPOLEON -RockPerfect AbsolutionGeffen GEFD 24314-J
Rough and ready, I Napoleon out ofOttawa boast a very polished brand ofharder rock. The layered sounds of thishard rock band often build to powerfulcrescendos, and the jagged vocal workby Steve Napoleon and back ups by theband compliment the sound very well. The title track and first single is typical ofthe band's new treatment of the genre,as is a successful cover of the Lubatune Every Time I See Your Picture. The band has a lot of merit and shouldgain some good U.S. success as wellas doing very well on the home front.Slotted for AOR.(CD Reviewed) - AM
QUEENInnuendoHollywood Records CDH 61020-P
It's always a curious thing when a bandlike Queen which has produced somany different styled albums comesout with a new one. Their latest, Innu-endo, doesn't smash any boundaries, but it does provide good solid tunes, some of them rocky, some more eclec-tic, all of them in Queen's own uniquetaste. The lead single, Headlong Is one

of the more pumped up tracks on thealbum, and it is sure to make an ap-pearance on AOR stations, and evenon CHR. There are many elements ofthe operatic rock genre that Queendefined in the '70s, particularly on thetitle track, I Can't Live Without You andthe hilarious I'm Going Slightly Mad.Each song is different, there's no dan-ger of getting a single blob of music withInnuendo, and the album brings back alot -of very fond memories. Queen fanswill like this one, and the band is sure topick up those extra admirers as well.(CD reviewed) - AM

KIMBERLEY RICHARDS - CountrySomething SpecialTrilogy - TR-CD-9103
Produced by tunesmith J.K. Gulley, thetitle says it all. He and KimberleyRichards have put together an albumthat is something special and with a fewpleasant surprises. The new singlefrom the album, the title track featuresthe well-known guitar signature of clas-sical guitarist Liona Boyd. There is abeautiful marriage here of this tendervocal styling of Richards with the bril-liance of Boyd's instrumental cushion-ing. And there's more, including JohnAllan Cameron displaying his 12 -stringguitar talent and vocals on CaptainAndy, another key track. Backgroundvocals aren't too shabby either, sup-plied by Kelita, Colina Phillips, Jim Gil -lard and producer J.K. Also containsthe past release of We Can Dream, aduet with J.K. which was the debutsingle for Richards last year. This track
also gained them a Juno nomination inthe Country Duo or Group category forthis year. Also key are Dancin' Eyesand Merry -Go -Round. Watch forcrossover action. (CD reviewed) - WG

Thoughtful pop that is delivered withsubtle harmonies, throaty vocal workand highly melodic tunes, A-ha's newalbum is slightly more mature than thepreceding one which provided us withTake On Me. The steadily rhythmicEarly Morning, East Of The Sun and thesincerity of I Call Your Name are twotracks which stand out. Cryin' In TheRain, written by Carole King and How-ard Greenfield is also very good.
