What a year we are having! 2017 was a great year when we reflected on it in January. At that time, I don’t think anyone would have realized how successful we were going to be this year. I’m so proud of our organization and what we have collectively accomplished. There is no way we would be able to achieve the levels of performance we have unless each employee, dealership and region was contributing. It seems like every month we are breaking and making new records with our performance across all aspects of our business. Incredible isn’t a strong enough adjective.

In this year’s first edition of the Premier Pulse, I spoke about the service department’s initiative to reduce the number of lost hours (the difference between hours worked and hours sold). We had an objective to reduce our lost hours by 10% for this year or almost 10,000 hours. Through July, the team is ahead of their goal. Annualized lost hours will be reduced by 11,641, which equates to a $1.3 million dollar improvement year over year. This is fantastic, considering the increased volume of service work the teams are facing this year.

The performance in the parts department is equally strong. Our part sales, year over year, are up by 14% to just under $170 million, and our operating profit has improved by 25%, or $4.7 million year over year. This is a testament to the entire team including the phone rooms, counter personnel, delivery drivers, warehouse

The used truck market continues to be strong. Truck demand exceeds supply with tight capacity from high freight volume, and depreciation has finally normalized so we’ve been able to keep our inventory fresh with desirable late model equipment the market currently covets. Our performance in remarketing is a bright spot for our organization. I recall that less than two years ago, we had an operating loss of $10 million dollars when the used truck values declined 35%. Carlos Romo Named Finalist in National Tech Competition

South Dallas Service Technician, Carlos Romo, was named a regional finalist in the 2018 Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) Technician Skills Competition. Romo was 1 of 525 technicians who completed the initial written test to enter the competition on June 11. He was selected as one of only 30 technicians nationwide to move on to the DTNA regional competition from August 7-9, 2018, in Cleveland, North Carolina. From the 30 technicians, there were 5 chassis finalists and 5 engine finalists from each of DTNA’s regions (east, central, and west). Romo competed in the engine category and placed first in the central region. The competition is held to recognize and reward top-performing service technicians across all Detroit Engine and Freightliner Cascadia vehicle distributors and dealers. It was started by DTNA because the company realizes that vehicle uptime is critical to its customers and technician skill is the most important factor during service. Recognizing the country’s top diesel technicians is an important way to encourage and recognize their hard work and achievement within the industry, the company states.

To celebrate Romo’s accomplishment and commitment to outstanding customer service, Service Manager Justin Griffin, Dealer Trainer Brent DeLeon, President Rich Shearing, General Manager Drew Burk, and Assistant Service Manager Jeff Weaks took him out for a hearty lunch!

At the end of August, the Belleville store relocated to a new facility effectively doubling the parts square footage and bay count. Record sales for all departments in both locations are proving to be an incentive to keep providing the best of parts and service to our customers. All locations in the West Region have participated in extensive customer service training with an emphasis on telephone etiquette and overall phone skills. We continue to improve on our customer service skills and are extremely proud of the employees who are taking advantage of the different levels of training opportunities as they are presented. Stanley Strickland, from the Chattanooga location, retired after 20 years of service. Stanley was an icon at the store, and will be greatly missed. Stanley was celebrated with a low country boil, and since he is a quite the pipe aficionado, he received a pipe along with several pipe accessories. He was also presented with a Georgia Bulldog rocking chair signed by all employees. We wish Stanley and his wife Cathy a very happy retirement.

Speaking of retirement, you may have heard that Bruce Hager, General Manager of our Knoxville location, has announced his retirement. We will miss Bruce too – not as much as we miss Stanley, but we will miss him. More on that story later this year.

Similar to our weather, the East’s operational results have been hot this summer. As we begin the final laps of the third quarter, the East dealerships are performing well. Midland/Odessa employees and their families enjoyed an evening of baseball, hamburgers, hot dogs, dippin’ dots and door prizes, too! a number of reasons behind these results. First, a strong economy. The economy is strong, employment levels are high and consumers have money to spend at retail, on housing, and travel. Manufacturers acquire new materials to support their production and to get finished goods to their customers. Tax receipts at government entities are high as well. This broad-based economic strength translates into high demand for over the road tractors, local and regional delivery trucks, dump trucks and concrete mixers, and hauling fuel from the depot to the stations. Trucks used to support highway maintenance at the state and municipal levels have also played a role. Second, a great sales team. While the market is strong, we have to execute to take advantage of the opportunity. Not all truck dealers are participating equally in the benefits of this great market. Our sales professionals have done a great job of working with our existing customers, as well as new customers, to ensure they have the correct trucks to meet their unique operational needs. They’ve done a great job of communicating the urgency to their customers of getting their orders in early to take advantage of available truck production. By growing our customer base during a time in which others may feel content, our team has prepared PTG to perform better during the next slowdown while setting sales records

It’s been a record-breaking quarter!by Ron Long, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing

As I write this I’m reflecting on the great year we’re having. While I don’t yet have the final results for August, I can tell you it will go down in history as part of a string of record setting months for the Premier Truck Group sales team. We set a sales record for combined new and used truck sales in May. This record was not held for long as we set a new record in July, selling 1,002 new and used trucks. This was our first time over 1,000 units in a single month with 802 new trucks representing the Freightliner, Western Star and Isuzu brands along with 200 used trucks from our remarketing group. My unofficial count of August sales tells me that the July record will be a one month record and August will be our high water mark!

These sales records and the associated profitability are truly remarkable, and are reflected in positive sales results in all departments - new, used, finance and insurance - and from all locations. There are

RemarketingNew & Remarketing Truck Managers Get their Minds WiredOn September 5th and 6th, all the new and remarketing managers attended training at the MindWire Group in Scottsdale, Arizona where they got to analyze their Predictive Index to further develop their leadership and management skills. The two-day training consisted of various exercises with the aim to improve sales results within their teams by learning to better manage each employee by focusing on their unique strengths and style of selling.

in the current market. Third, a supportive company. The efforts our sales team brings to bear are supported by the best F & I team in the commercial truck business, helping with countless marketing initiatives to drive customers to our dealerships and general managers who understand the needs of their dealership’s customers…and who ensured they had the stock inventory available to be able to meet their customer’s needs.

We have a lot to be proud of at PTG, and within our sales and marketing group. However, we can never allow ourselves to become complacent. We must continue to strive for bringing the industry’s best customer service and focus to our marketplaces. To ensure we continue to achieve and improve, we are investing in training and tools for our team. Over the coming months our sales managers will participate in leadership training and will sponsor vocational sales training for the Premier team. We will also be rolling out a new customer relationship management (CRM) system and implementing a tool to assist our sales team by allowing them to have information at their fingertips, electronically, and to have access to 100% of the available inventory throughout the enterprise. Each of these initiatives will prepare the PTG sales team to succeed at even higher levels in the coming years.

purchase of the flagship Pacific Circle facility and have substantial renovation plans ready to commence once details are finalized. Mississauga based Sales Co-ordinator Tracy Rose was recognized for 30 years of service. Tracy is invaluable in keeping the sales department operating smoothly. Kathleen Bamlett and Andy Hill reached the 20 year

anniversary and were recognized and were recognized for their valuable contributions to the business.

The newly acquired Hamilton store is now integrated into the region and performing well. The recent certification with Thomas Built Bus was key to getting the 215 busses PDI’d and delivered in the month of August, another record breaking feat for the TBB team.

The consolidation plans for the St Catharine’s and Niagara Falls facilities continue to progress.

We are awaiting Western Star certification in Niagara Falls to better service this important gateway from Western New York to the Ontario market.

The North Region Team continues to perform at an extremely high level despite the pressures of a strong market and short vacation season. We are being rewarded with new and returning customers as a result of the professionalism brought to work each day. Once again thank you to all.

Greetings to all of our outstanding Premier Truck Group employees, and a sincere thank you to each of you for your outstanding contributions to our most successful year yet!! We all recognize that all businesses go through performance cycles over the course of many years, so let’s be grateful for the great 2018 we’ve had and look forward to the coming year(s) with a sense of humility and appreciation for how we have performed. Your senior management team recognizes that our vision and strategy is nothing without the outstanding performances of all of you, at our respective dealerships throughout North America. As you are reading this, we are fast approaching the end of 2018, so allow me to share with you some of our successes in 2018:

Training

ATD/NADA: In early December, our final week of the six week ATD program, including the graduation event, will be held. We are proud to have successfully implemented our second class of graduates; thirteen graduates for 2018 which included a revised program of integrating the variable weeks and adding one week of fixed operations. We are also pleased to deliver week 5 at our Knoxville location on October 15-19. The ATD program has become a staple of our management development efforts and we congratulate this year’s outstanding class.

APEX: Similar to our ATD program, 2018 will include our second annual APEX graduating class with 25 honorees. We are grateful to the commitment of these 25 students who traveled to Dallas and participated in four separate trainings which typically were 2-3 days each. We will continue to look to enhance this program each year as we prepare to select

30 students for 2019. Our hope is that all of our PTG employees who desire to attain and grow in their management careers will have an opportunity to be selected for APEX.

Customer Service: During 2018 we have rolled out two rounds of our customer experience trainings. These classes are designed to help us be recognized as the best provider of outstanding guest experiences in the commercial truck industry. We believe that being an employer of choice and providing the best in customer service will continue to separate us from others, and be recognized as the best. By this time, all of you who are customer-facing and interacting should have had the opportunity to attend at least one of these trainings.

Future: Of course we will continue to offer our REvUP orientation programs every month in all of our markets and, in the coming year, we anticipate adding to our training curriculum with the development of a job skills related course focusing on an operational aspect of the business (i.e. CDK) as well as an advanced leadership program. In the not-too-distant future, our trainings will be offered through a Computer-Based Forum (CBL) and a Learning Management System (LMS). Stay tuned on that.

Health Care

We will be delivering our onsite benefits open enrollment meetings at each location starting early November. We continue to do these onsite meetings to create a more personal and intimate means to assist you in understanding our offerings and to have all of your questions answered. Your health is of primary concern to us and we continue to look for opportunities to create health awareness and meaningful coverages for all of our employees. Did you know that the corporation spends over $75 million annually on health care for our employees? This is a significant expense for which we bear most of the financial burden. Help us in that regard, and ultimately for the benefit of you and your families, by being proactive in your health care and looking for a healthier life style for

yourself and your family. This fall we are introducing two new programs:

Weight Loss: In the month of September, we developed a competition among all of our dealerships in determining which location will have the greatest percentage of weight lost. 342 individuals across all dealerships entered the competition. Winners will be announced in November and awards will be given to participants at the winning dealership. We know that a healthy diet, well balanced weight, and daily exercise regiments can go a long way in improving and maintaining the health of all of our employees.

Breast Cancer Awareness: On October 19th, we will provide each of you with a pink bandana to bring awareness to this cause and for all cancers in general. Sadly, many of our employees have personally been impacted by this terrible disease, or know a family member or friend who has been impacted. Regular screenings and healthy lifestyle choices can help in this regard as we try to play our part in putting an end to this disease.

Top Tech: The 3rd annual Top Tech Challenge will be held at the UTI Irving campus on November 4th. Because of a tie this year, 11 competitors, representing all of our regions, will spend a weekend in Dallas for a fun and healthy competition. We are especially pleased that 75% of our technicians signed up to take the test.

In closing, I thank all of you once again for our success this past year. We have so much to look forward to in the coming year as your human resources department is always focused on listening and developing the best work environment for each of you. We always value your ideas and look forward to your input via our open door environment or through our regular meetings and employee engagement surveys (scheduled for March 2019). Please call me or email at any time if you have any questions or concerns.

Wanted to share with you a recent fantastic example of turning a negative situation around. This particular customer left a negative review regarding his experience in Dallas. Justin Griffin and Jeff Weaks, the Service Managers in Dallas, were diligent in getting involved, understanding the situation, then contacting the customer with facts, and what could be done.

The customer was so impressed with the follow up, not only did he change his review to 5 STARS, he has gone as far as stating he will “…be sure to come back and use this dealer in the future!”

This is an example of WORLD CLASS SERVICE.

Most certainly, we cannot make every customer happy, every time, but this is indeed an excellent example of a location engaged and turning a negative into a positive.

Chattanooga’s Vintage DudeChattanooga employees gathered to celebrate their fearless leader, General Manager, Darel “Bowtie” Dyer’s 50th birthday on July 18th. Mr. “Bowtie” was a good sport in receiving the array of gifts collected by employees to assist him through the next 50 years.

Shared Services Center Kicks off Football SeasonThe SSC opened the season in a fashionable way by sporting their favorite team wear to work on Friday, August 31. Cotton Patch was provided during halftime, with a scrumptious burger bar that fueled employees for the second half of the work day. Good luck to everyone’s team this season and Go Cowboys!!

Mississauga’s BBQ FeastAs a way to say thank you to their employees, PTG Mississauga provided a delectable BBQ feast on August 26 for weekend shift employees, and August 30 for day shift employees. A feast isn’t complete without dessert! A local ice cream truck provided employees with sundaes, banana splits, shakes, slushies, you name it! It was a great way to end the summer.

This June, PTG North Dallas formed a kickball team named the Boulevard Bullies. They were one of many teams to join the Lonestar Sports & Social Club Adult Kickball league in Dallas. Their season consisted of 8 games that were played on Wednesday nights. Anyone who wanted to showcase their kickball skills was welcomed to play. Their season ended on a high note on September 5th with a 7-2 win over the Kicktators. Thank you to everyone that came out to play this summer!

As we head into the fall I look forward to hosting our 3rd annual Top Tech competition. This is an event I personally look forward to every year because it gives me an opportunity to give back and recognize the technicians who give so much to us on a daily basis throughout the year. This year we had a record level of technicians enter the written competition at 75% of all technicians. Unfortunately, only the top 10 will be selected for the finals with only 2 ultimately claiming the championship.

Thousands of Americans die every year from slips, trips and falls at work. Learn the different types of falls that can happen while you’re on the job, and what you can do to prevent them before you get hurt!

SAME-LEVEL FALLS & PREVENTION:• Good housekeeping: A clean workplace is a safer workplace• Spills: Rope them off, clean them up, and alert your co-workers

and supervisor• Cords: Always use cable covers or tape to prevent co-workers

from tripping over cords

In the Central Region, through the first six months, we have seen year-over-year improvement in all areas of the business.

• New truck sales are up 28% • Used truck sales are up 30% • Parts and Service are up 16% • Collision Center is up by 25%

CENTRAL REGION CENTRAL REGION (continued from page 2)

We continue to see strong results and expect the trend to continue throughout the balance of the year.

We have begun our second round of customer service training. This round is focused on improving our phone skills. We interact with hundreds of customers each day on the phone. In many cases, the customer has not yet decided to do business with us when they call. The training will continue to enhance our ability to serve our customers. Improved phone calls will lead

to additional business.

In sticking with our mission to provide great facilities, we are investing in our Tulsa dealership. We are in the process of installing a new overhead crane, resurfacing the shop floor, as well as painting and installing LED lights. We expect this project to be complete in September. This will enhance the working conditions and safety for our team members.

Thank you for all you do each day. Keep up the good work as it is exciting to see what is happening in the Central Region.

No matter who wins, though, they know they are representing the larger group and their chosen profession. Good luck everyone!

As we look ahead to 2019 we are anticipating that the business climate will remain positive. As I pen this message we have already booked 64% of this year’s new truck sales for 2019. The numbers we are forecasting for truck sales in 2019 are staggering in comparison to the last few years and we are working diligently with Freightliner and Western Star to insure that they provide us with enough

trucks to satisfy all our customers demand. Freightliner overall is up 14% year over year in truck sales and YTD PTG is up 40% year over year, validating that we have the best sales organization in the business.

I could go on and on but will leave it there for now and wish everyone a great fall and a safe return to school for all of our children. Take care,

Slips, Trips and Falls

• Behavior: Don’t rush, be aware of your surroundings, cut down on distractions, don’t carry too much at once, and use handrails

• Don’t work in dimly lit areas – instead, change light bulbs, use a flashlight or alert a supervisor

• Make sure your shoes are in good condition and tightly tied every shift

ELEVATED FALLS:• Be careful when working at heights• Falls from ladders are very common, so use them carefully• Choose the right ladder and climb it correctly – keep rungs

at the arch of your foot as you climb, and grasp the side rails with your hands, not the rungs

• When using a ladder, don’t reach too far to the right or left – it could upset your balance and make you fall

• Wear the proper fall protection if working more than a few feet or more above the ground, like fall arrest protection, safety nets and guardrails

• Guardrails must be 42 inches higher than the working surface

• S afety nets and fall arrest protection should keep you from

REMEMBER:• Falls, from any level, can lead to sprains, strains, broken

bones, busted backs and even death• You can prevent falls at work by: Adjusting your behavior,

keeping the workplace clean, wearing fall protection and using equipment – like ladders – safely

freefalling more than six feet
